When I first entered this restaurant, I thought it looked a bit dark and uninviting but I was willing to give it a try. After all, some of the best food comes out of "hole in the wall" drab-looking places. There aren't enough quality pho options in Gaithersburg so I really wanted to like Pho Nam and actually could have - the soup was pretty tasty (not the best but satisfying enough) and the service was fast and generous. For example, I asked for extra lime and got a huge bowl of lime slices instead of the extra two or three slices other pho spots give me. The reason I haven't gone back? When I made a trip to the bathroom, I turned on the light switch and to my horror, there were dark finger smudges all over it. As I looked around, all I could see was grime. This wasn't a place that was just drab and old looking after.... it really was dirty. It takes a lot to ruin my overly healthy appetite but this bathroom succeeded. It was a sad day... and my pursuit of a good pho in Gaithersburg continues. read more

Walking in, I was surprised to see how big this place is. From the outside it looks tiny, but it's actually quite spacious and can seat a lot of people, including very large groups which is a plus. I will start by saying that the works, combination bowl is quite flavorful in broth. However, I wasn't feeling the meat. I found myself comparing it to our usual spot that has great quality cuts of meat. This, wasn't cutting it. They were very small bits and pieces. Not too much noodle which was good. The garden rolls were MEH. They stuffed it with so much lettuce that I couldn't even taste the uncleaned shrimp. All I tasted was lettuce. The Vietnamese spring rolls were delicious. Definitely my favorite thing here. They were filled with so much mushroom, taro and veggie goodness! I'd come here JUST for these if I was having a spring roll craving day for sure! I also had the pink jelly with coconut milk dessert which I was disappointed with. The coconut milk needed to be stirred more. It was chunky and really gritty which made the entire thing just difficult to digest. I won't be getting this again here - EVER. After eating, I could feel the MSG taking over my body and soul. They definitely use a good amount of it, because right when I got home all I wanted to do was sleep. Prices are fair. It is CASH ONLY, but fortunately I am a BOA patron, and they are literally right next door. Parking is easy. This definitely wouldn't be my first choice place but it is better than some other places out there. read more

Love the chicken pho, hence the four stars. Everything else is so bad, it's laughable. The last few times I have been, they burnt the living daylights out of the fried spring rolls. Each time, they brought them to the table *after* my pho came out (totes defeated ordering them as an appetizer - Hello!?) The servers are militant and don't have time for you to ponder over the dirty, Sriracha-stained menu. They glare at you, pen hovering over pad, with an expression that screams: "WHAT!!" Kudos to the dude at the cash register who always knows what ticket/table you came from. I don't know how he keeps track because that place gets packed. The hall to the bathroom is rapey and probably haunted. Avoid! During the week, try to get there between 11:30 & 11:45. I came here by a suggestion from a friend. I got the number 1 large which was really filling and the meat was really tender. However, the broth was pretty salty and the noodles didn't feel like they were cooked all the way. I'd also like to mention the hoisin sauce bottle was dirty and the top was peeling off. Very basic pho restaurant with the typical pho and rolls only, there were no other vietnamese dishes. The restaurant had a spacious big rectangular layout. The rolls were the typical, nothing usual. However, the broth was fantastic. The only dish I order is the eye round, nice and lean. The beef was thinly sliced and once the hot broth was poured over they cooked medium rare. I would say that their pho is one of the greasier varieties. And if you like that, then this is the place for you. I would stay away from their summer rolls since they fill it with day old lettuce (that's a little brown around the edges). But if you stick w/ their pho, you can't go wrong. Having not had a Pho fix in awhile, we stopped in here for lunch on a Sunday. The restaurant, although large and somewhat busy, is sort of hidden in the corner the strip mall. We grabbed a table (seat yourself) and I decided to try the a mixed bowl of chicken and beef brisket, while everyone else got something similar, as well as two orders of their egg rolls (only two per order). The soup was delivered promptly, except for mine. Odd, but we waited a little bit and I flagged down our waiter to ask. He apologized, somehow completely forgotten my order, and I waited for my Pho while everyone else ate theirs. When it finally arrived, I added my leaves and hot sauce and dove right in. I soon realized it was strictly beef with no chicken, but at that point I didn't even want to say anything and just enjoyed what I got. Everything was pretty good, but it goes without saying the service here is shaky, at best. I'm a viet girl from SoCal, so it's been pretty painful trying to find good Vietnamese food in MD. I've gotta say, this has probably been one of the best pho places I've tried on the east coast. (note: I still only gave it three stars bc it's really not great. just better than the rest) I must admit though, I'm not usually a fan of pho. Blasphemous, I know. But after a long night of drinking, pho is the perfect cure and comfort food. My usual is pho tai nam sach (rare steak, flank and tripe). I've tried the vermicelli, egg rolls, spring rolls, and ca phe sua da (vietnamese coffee with condensed milk) here and they're definitely no-go's. for some reason the water here tastes weird and the sodas are flat. Ask for the little dishes to put your dipping sauces on, so you can dip your meat in them for more flavor. hoisin sauce and sriracha are amazing. bring cash. and wear clothes you don't mind smelling like pho afterwards. read more

My coworkers suggested Pho Nam because they like it. I looked online and saw a website which listed their food types as including Vegetarian and Vegan options. There is nothing on the menu which is inherently either. The reason they still get 2 stars is because they made me a vermicelli noodle dish without meat or fish sauce that was pretty good. It had vermicelli noodles, lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, scallions, and fried onions. On the side they gave me peanut sauce with some hot sauce in it. My meal was decent although not what I had been lead to believe. The place looks like almost like a cafeteria and the Pho for my coworkers was prepared almost instantaneously - they seemed to enjoy. Yikes! Windows are always nasty in this place. Must wonder if what public can see is gross, what does the kitchen look like? Worse yet, there was NO SOAP DISPENSER in the bathroom. Same bathroom staff uses. Yes, I am not kidding. When we mentioned this to management, the dude kinda yelled something and then turned away. Staff not happy, definitely thrown at you when it arrives. I had been here three times in past before, as my friend pleads with me that the quality of the pho is fine. Upon needing to use the restroom on fourth trip here, is when I noticed the disgusting bathroom. I won't be returning to see if they ever did put soap in the bathroom. Service isn't amazing. But it's to be expected from cafeteria style asian places. It's fast enough though, which makes up for the lack of a smile to me. Smiles aren't going to make or break my day, the actual quality of service does, and they get the orders in and food coming out fast enough. Not quite as fast as 75, but good enough. The food, this part is what matters the most for a restaurant review right?. Decent pho. The broth is a little bit different from the other places around. Some people like it, others don't. You're going to have to try it to see if you like it. The broth is a darker brown. I don't like it as much, probably because I got used to the clearer and lighter ones at other places faster. The upside is that they do give you a lot of meat. The rice dishes are good too. I've only had these twice here so not a large sample size, but I'd be confident that I'm getting decent food ordering it. They don't take credit here. Bring cash. read more

First time here. I thought it was the sister restaurant to Pho Nom Nom on Rockville pike, it was not. I like a spicy pho and was a little disappointed that the didn't have that option. They have one broth that they use for everything. I ordered the fried egg rolls and the #9 under the beef noodles soup. The broth was very good but a little too heavy on a certain spice. The soup comes with noodles, basil, lime and sprouts. The eggs rolls were small but flavorful. I would go back again to see if the broth is consistent. The staff was very nice and super helpful. As soon as you walk in and get seated they're literally bringing you what you were planning on ordering hah. Good prices, quick service, great selection, authentic. I think they may have cooked it ahead of time and just put them in a bunch of bowls for faster service, otherwise I don't know how it would have been glued down like that. This restaurant has the most decent pho I have gotten out here in the MoCo area since coming from southern California and 3 minutes away from Little Saigon. They are always quick to seat you and they have the average Vietnamese place service. They'll try to take your order right away and you pay at the register. After you order, the pho usually comes out pretty quickly. Now onto the food. I have only had the pho here so that's what I'll review. My usual is the large pho chin (well-done beef). Sometimes if I'm super hungry I'll get some extra pho noodles with it. The broth is pretty good and has the umami-packed yumminess that I want. This place also gives a lot of meat compared to other pho places I have been to. If you want a little sauce bowl to dip your meat in you'll have to ask them but they're pretty good about it. My girlfriend has tried their vermicelli noodles with pork (bun thit nuong) but said it wasn't that great. This is my go-to place so far that I've found in Maryland when I crave pho to cure my hangovers (pho is the best for this BTW) and/or it's a cold, overcast day in which I just crave some soupy beefy awesomeness. Pro tip- This place is cash only so hit up the ATM at the BofA next door before hand or come with cash handy. read more

Warning: This is a long review. For my conclusions, skip to the end. Disclaimer: I am not a newcomer to Vietnamese cuisine. I have dined at Vietnamese restaurants across the country, including at many of my Vietnamese friends' homes. This is not to say that I am an expert, but I have been around the block. We found ourselves a seat, when a worker came to us with one menu for us to share and immediately expected to take our order. LITERALLY one second after plopping the menu down on our table. We kindly told him to give us a minute for us to look over the menu, so he went to seat another group who had just walked through the door, plopped down one menu for them, and then somehow appeared right back at our table expecting us to be ready to order. Mind you this was within the span of two minutes. Again, we kindly told him we needed another moment to glance over our menu choices. I saw from the corner of my eye that he came back a third time within another couple minutes without saying anything, probably noticed that we still weren't ready and then disappeared into the kitchen. When we had settled on our entrees a minute later, he was nowhere to be found. Granted, it only took a few more moments for him to come back to our table. His first words to us were snide, "So are you sure you are ready to order now?" with emphasis on the 'sure' and 'now' and a smile of bitter amusement plastered across his face. And trust me, this was not a failed attempt at a joke. Umm. Excuse me? I believe it is perfectly acceptable for patrons of your restaurant to be given a few moments to look over ONE menu and to be treated with respect as human beings. The rudeness of our host was highly uncalled for and unwarranted. I have never been treated like this at any establishment. So other than the staff, the decor is very plain - just tables and chairs, no decorations, no music from what I could tell. Pho Nam does have a larger dining room than Pho75. But if you want a slightly better ambience, I'd head down 355 to Pho75 for some Vietnamese music and photographs on the wall and sacrifice the slightly larger space. Now, finally on to the food. The pho here is nothing special. In fact, the soup was bland and oily. I could taste nutmeg and cinnamon very strongly over any of the other flavors in the soup, yet they poured a ton of MSG into this ish because I keep on downing water the whole day. The portion size seems larger than at Pho75, but cannot compare in taste. I did notice that the bean sprouts here were much fresher than at Pho75 and the gross dangly ends were mostly discarded. So I guess plus one for Pho Nam for that one. I got the grilled lemongrass chicken on rice vermicelli noodles (bun), expecting it to be similar to what I've gotten at BaLe. WOW. This was the saving grace of the meal. A HUGE bowl of food with noodles with some nicely arranged cut up lettuce, carrots, bean sprouts, meat, crushed peanuts, some cilantro and basil, and a side bowl of nuoc mam (fish sauce). I can't take that much fish sauce (sorry I'm not Vietnamese) so I sprinkled some in my bowl, but I also added the Sriracha and hoisin sauce for pho and mixed all the ingredients together like a Korean bibimbap. SO amazing and filling. The meat is extremely flavorful yet tender and much juicier than at BaLe. I also tried the Iced Salty Plum Soda, but it's nothing amazing. I would skip it and try something else. I've also had both their desserts before, and I would definitely recommend at least trying them. They're not bad, but certainly not something I would go out of my way to have. Bottom line: Average to below average service (even for an Asian restaurant), expect some rude/snide remarks, below average pho, great lemongrass meat with noodles, do not get the salty plum drinks, try some dessert. I would frequent this place again only because of their bun, but if another experience with rude service does go down, don't be surprised if you lose some customers. read more

Of the different Pho restaurant I frequent, this establishment is adequate for when you just want to concentrate of Pho noodles. No matter how busy the place gets, you can expect to get a table within 10 minutes. Other than large photos of Vietnam hanging on the walls, there are no other decor to accent the atmosphere. As I said, you can expect to get a table within 10 minutes if the place is packed so the service is quick to order if you're ordering Pho, which arrives about 4-5 minutes after placing your noodle order. Expect to wait about 10-15 minutes if you're ordering other dishes like rice/dry noodle meals. The food is good and you'll get the expected bean sprouts, sliced jalapeno peppers and lime wedge with your Pho order. This place also serves Garden Shrimp Rolls (some Pho establishments don't serve such additions). It's not easy getting refills of water when you run out and you have to make it a point to get their attention when you want more water. You have your standard soft drink that's offered in a 12oz soda can, so the selection is limited but you also have other more exotic drinks like the different coffee blends and coconut drinks.
