This is a true mom-and-pop Vietnamese restaurant that my family and I have loved for many, many years. Even with the new management, it's great to see that they've kept the same menu and, most importantly, the same amazing food we've always enjoyed. The last time we visited, the restaurant was pretty busy, so it took a little while to place our order, but once we did, the food came out quickly. I ordered the bún chả Hà Nội, and it was absolutely delicious--fresh, flavorful, and just as comforting as I remembered. I really appreciate seeing this place continue to thrive, and I'll definitely keep supporting this great establishment whenever I'm in Springfield. Under new management. Same menu, but it just hit different. We were given a small plate of sprouts and basil to share. Ordered the lunch combo with spring roll and pho (tendon, tripe and fatty brisket). Yes, the bowl was large, but I'm seriously thinking some msg was added because I was so thirsty afterwards. Stopped by on a Monday after my mom's doctor's appointment. From what I remembered this spot used to have really good broth. Ever since they changed ownership i have dined here 3 times and every single time just gets worse. I got the number 4 and the broth was just so watery and bland. As you can see I had to add a lot of condiments and spice to make it edible. It's a decent size pho spot, but completely dead. They do a lot of take out so I guess that's what keeps them alive. This place is excellent. I came here last night for dinner before I got my groceries at the other store in the plaza. I got two pork and shrimp rolls ($5.95), a bowl of pho (menu option number one, $14.95), and a mango smoothie ($5.95). Pho is excellent if you have never had it before. It is a watery beef soup with beef meatballs, tripe, brisket, spring onions, regular onions, and I think some other green vegetables. The servings were very generous. I took the rolls home to eat the next day. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I ate the soup with chop sticks and also a miso soup spoon. The service was very friendly. Formerly in the space occupied by Hai Duong, Pho #1 is a spacious and unassuming family-run restaurant in a strip mall filled with other ethnic cuisines. Generous portions of fragrant pho are offered with a wide variety of meat (beef or chicken) and fish selections. Oddly enough, they only come in two sizes - small and large, and the large is only $1.00 more, so ordering the right size should be a no-brainer! :-D They're also one of the rare Vietnamese restaurants that offers the wide udon-like rice noodles (banh canh) that are hard to find among the usual menu offerings, along with other non-standard options like pork hocks, pig's hearts, and pig tongues. Their standard shaking beef with fried rice was outstanding - as were the shrimp garden rolls and crispy spring rolls. We wanted to try one of their clay pot dishes but decided to save them for our next visit. I wanted to get pho soup because I was a little under the weather. I ordered the large pho with shrimp and the egg rolls. The soup was served hot and soothed my scratchy throat. Also found out that this has been rebranded to Pho Number 1. This used to be Pho Hai Duong. The Food: My go to bowl of Pho is the Pho Tai. The meat is always nicely cooked when it touches the broth and the broth flavor itself is delicious. The portion is nicely sized so you won't be leaving here with wanting more to eat. However, when paired with some crispy spring rolls or Cha Gio, for appetizers, you can't go wrong. The Service: The service is always good here. When walking in, the staff greet you to an available seat almost immediately and they try to get your orders in/out as soon as possible. Place is clean and the food is always good. This is the best place to get pho and Vietnamese dishes in the Springfield/Alexandria area. The different soups they have just have so much depth. Your mileage may vary. I went to this place a long time ago and back then it was not terrible, at the time food was alright, environment was ok, and price was fair. I decided to go back yesterday on a whim since was in the area. The bun ho hue was a little bland and veges with it were kind of old, vermicelli noodles with beef the veges were kind of old, noodles were a little off in that it was a little undercooked to me, and the beef was slightly under cooked as it was still red, and also ordered the Quail which was just so so and the veges that came with it I didn't bother touching. Environment was kind of off putting with some kind of constant old water smelling oder. My thought is they probably need to change whatever rag they are using to wipe down the tables / menu. I didn't bother touching the water cup as it had similar scent. I wanted to like this place since the last time was not bad; but yesterday was just terrible with that constant smell. Service is not consistent enough to me and too many warning signs for me to go back again after yesterday's visit. The constant old water smell, the under cooked meat, the old vegetables, the lack of taste in the soup, it just made me overall distrustful. Based on the two experiences I've had with this place, I think your mileage may vary with this place. Rating for yesterday's experience is actually a two star, but since prior visit was actually ok I felt I should add one star for that. One of Springfield gem, I had a great time dining here with my girlfriend today. This restaurant is underrated for what it is offering. I throughly enjoy the food that I had and I had a chance to try my girlfriend's food also and it is phenomenal. We ordered the quail with fry rice and the bun bo hue and I have to admit that it is one of the most flavorful quail I have had in this area. The bun bo hue came with plenty of meat and the broth is mouth watering. Furthermore, the staff was amazing! I had a chance to speak with one of the staff and the gentleman was very fun to speak with. They were always ready to help and accommodating to the best of their ability. The wait time for the food was also excellent, we barely notice any wait before our food arrived. Upon entering and seating we waited almost 10 mins before anyone came to even speak to my family, with only 1 other family in the restaurant that should have never been the case, and upon ordering the food, the person taking the order got the order wrong, yea I get it mistakes happen but I did try to rectify the mistake by ordering a second time with a different person whom asked me for confirmation of what I'm asking for 2x so thinking it would be fine but NO, the order NEVER came nor did anyone even bother come back to ask us if we needed anything???? While we my kids are sharing water from one another????? It's a restaurant after all, am I asking too much? So if I were you, looking for PHO in the Springfield area, go down the road and get your PHO NGON in Kingstowne, amazing flavor and service. This restaurant is under new management. They kept the same menu as the previous Pho Duong but the dishes are much better now, especially the pho broth and the toppings. One of my favorites there is the Bun Bo Hue, it's very tasty. I like how they kept the place much more cleaner now than before. read more
