Saigon City has quickly become one of my favorite places for pho. The broth is outstanding--rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care. It has that perfect balance of savory depth without being overly salty, and you can tell it's been simmered for hours. The soft tendon was another highlight. It was incredibly tender and practically melted in my mouth, adding a great texture and flavor to the bowl. Too often tendon can be tough or chewy, but Saigon City gets it exactly right. The portion sizes are also fantastic. The bowls are generous and loaded with noodles, meat, and fresh ingredients, making it a great value for the price. I left completely satisfied and already looking forward to my next visit. We popped in after our gym workout for a nice soothing lunch! We have been here several times but it has been awhile so we were glad to go back because we forgot how good it is! THE DEAL: Sit down service and you can basically pick your table. FOOD & DRINKS: We shared a nice piping hot pot of tea which is perfect for warming the winter soul and started off with some crispy eggrolls. They were hot, crispy, and delish served with lettuce, carrots, and daikon radish and of course, a sweet-and-sour dipping sauce. Hubs got the wonton soup, which was a full-size bowl like a pho, and it was incredibly delicious. The broth had so much depth and flavor and the pork was just tender as can be and the shrimp was perfectly cooked too and it was served with a side pho like accoutrements. I got the Buddha's Delight which is sautéed veggies and tofu and it was served with a side of white rice. The veggies were beautifully cooked al dente, the tofu was superb and the flavor of the sauce was delish! AMBIANCE: The restaurant decor is like going back in time with old laminate table tops and an almost cafeteria like feel but comfortable. We did have an annoying diner right behind us who was by himself and had his phone on speaker and was listening and watching videos as loud as could be and PSA people do that on your own time not on others lol!!! I hate to write a bad review of a pho place, but in my opinion, it wasn't great. We arrived around lunch time with no workers to be seen. After a few minutes of waiting at the door, we decided to sit ourselves down. Few minutes later we were handed menus, not by an employee but a customer..mind you, it wasn't busy at all (about 4 tables) We were greeted by our server shortly after and her energy and vibe was just not it. A bit of an attitude and felt extremely rushed. We ordered a large seafood pho and a small with egg noodles. The large seafood pho looked pretty delicious , but unfortunately looks can be deceiving. The broth wasn't flavorful at all. Just tasted like water with a hint of beef flavoring. The shrimp and fish cakes were rubbery, and the fishballs were still cold. We drove past this little spot on our way to our hotel while in town for a funeral. It was close enough that we walked back for dinner. This is the definition of Mom and Pop. There was a gentleman watching Vietnamese videos on his phone and he told us we could sit anywhere. There were boxes and supplies outside the little hallway to the restroom. But how was the food? We got egg rolls (cha gio), chicken pho and bun bo hue. All were delicious and filling on a cold day. Our two lemonades were also good. Only a few other customers came in while we were there but it looked like some were also pickup up takeout. Staff seemed to disappear at times so I had to track down someone to pay at the counter. Decent quality Pho with great service! Came in for dinner and got the Pho Tai. Had generous slices of meat, lots of spring onions, and tasty noodles. The broth was a bit bland - not as good as my favorite Pho place in Herndon. The fresh basil and Sriracha helped elevate the flavor, however, not as spicy as I would have liked it. Comparing with other Vietnamese restaurants, Saigon City's prices are very reasonable, the dishes have good portions and very tasty.

Since our go to place down the street for Vietnamese food was closed; I decided to take my nephews here for dinner. It was my first time here. First impressions is that it is a no frills hole in the wall restaurant. Service was not particularly friendly but nevertheless; prompt. I ordered the plain pho for my nephews and beef stew with bread for myself. Both were fairly decent although I give them props for how well the beef and tendons were cooked. This is the fourth time in nine months that I've been here, and this place does NOT disappoint! The pork in the banh mi sandwich was plentiful and flavorful, and the pickled veggies brought a delicious balance. The bo kho is my favorite soup, even moreso than the #16 pho, which always hits the spot. The beef is so tender and the vegetables are perfectly cooked. To top it all off, unfortunately I didn't take a picture but their Vietnamese iced coffee is the perfect blend of sweet and strong. We were gonna get boba afterwards but we didn't need to after tasting their coffee. This is what I get for not heeding the advice of the unofficial "Mayor of Springfield," Richard C (https://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=ql4ogqNGYQR1LgIGtfCxbA) who gave Saigon City a very tepid 3 star rating back in 2018. Like others in the area, I've driven past past Saigon City many times on my way to the Springfield Town Center or en route to the nearby Trader Joe's. And I'm always on the lookout for good Vietnamese places which don't require me to drive all the way to Eden Center or other parts of Falls Church, so I decided to finally stop in to see if there was good local Viet cuisine. Walking in at around 5pm for an early dinner, I was encouraged since I observed many Vietnamese patrons, including some large families. And I also had a couple of friends along (one of which happened to be Vietnamese) so as to get a larger sample size of opinions. Well, sad to say but my overall experience at Saigon City was very disappointing. First off, the service was abysmal. There were only three of us, so the other wait staff was running around tending to the larger tables to the point where we didn't receive any menus or water for a good 10-15 minutes (and that's after I flagged someone down to request these items). Secondly, it was another 15 minutes before we saw our server again to take our orders; this resulted in our food not arriving until we had been in the restaurant for almost ONE hour! And once the food arrived, it was a subpar "meh". While most people are familiar with the ubiquitous Pho as the standard bearer for Vietnamese noodle soup, my favorite has always been the Mi Bho Ko. When done properly, it consists of hearty dark broth with carrots, onions, and various pieces of "stewed all day" beef. The version here at Saigon City was not good. The broth was very watery and lacked the rich flavor which characterizes this dish. And the meat was tough and many were fatty. I also asked for yellow egg noodles, but got the white vermicelli instead. My dining companions tasted my dish, and agreed with my mediocre assessment. Other dishes included the Bún Thit Nuong, which is the grilled pork over rice vermicelli, veggies, and accompanied by Vietnamese style egg rolls. I tried some of the pork, and it was overcooked, dry, and flavorless. Typically, the meat should have a nice umami flavor derived from a sweet/salty Fish sauce based marinade, but the all I could taste was salt. And the egg rolls were all wrong. They were borderline burnt with hardly any meat in the filling. The accompanying Nc Mm also tasted of a cheap fish sauce base and lacked the citrus notes I usually associate with this dipping accompaniment. Our other friend got a large bowl of the number 17 pho (Tái, Nam, Gau, Gân, Sách), which honestly was a bit overpriced at $10.50. No pics since everyone has seen a bowl of pho. My tasting notes were, the broth was okay (still too salty), decent portion of meat, but way too many noodles for $10.50 I dunno - maybe we ordered the wrong items since Saigon City has been operating at this location in Springfield for over 13 years, so obviously they must have their fans. OR Could it be that because people don't want to drive an hour to Eden Center for Vietnamese cuisine, this is good enough? Based upon my rating, you can deduce what I think. read more

Talk about giving away your hand too early. I have passed by this restaurant several times going to El Paso Mexican Restaurant and never gave it much thought, until I was recently diagnosed with the Vietnamese food disease that makes me want to eat almost nothing but Vietnamese food. The side effects of this disease are quite pleasant, so I do not know why people call it a disease to begin with. Anybody care to explain that one? Anyway, it leads into the review. You can probably figure out what I got based on previous Vietnamese restaurant reviews. Okay, I will spell this one out. Grilled pork vermicelli rice noodles, summer rolls, and (ready for the twist?) a passion fruit bubble tea. The food itself starts out great, but after 2-3 bites, where is the taste? Quickly, the meal dries up faster than Los Angeles in the summer time. It feels like you are just eating water when it comes to the "vegetables". Speaking of vegetables, the menu says they will be pickled. Um, really? I did not taste the "pickled" part at all, just wet. The portions are big, but it is like eating a lot of nothing. Do not even bother with the sweet tea, as you get closer to the bottom, it gets absurdly sweet and the tapioca balls dry up so quick that they can hurt your teeth when you try to drink the rest of your drink. It is also really expensive to boot. Which leads me into my next point. The prices are deceptively expensive. Sure, you will see the menu and think wow! Lunch for under $10. Before I knew it, what should have been a cheap lunch turned into a $17 bill. That is a lot for 3 items for mediocre food - and service. Yeah that is right, the service is weird. One server doing everything, and another guy just lounging around waiting for the kitchen bell to ring so he can finally have something to do. My original plan was to go to El Paso Mexican Restaurant for lunch, but decided to give this a try because it would be "new". It stands to reason that next time, I will continue to pass by this restaurant. read more

Excellent place for delicious Vietnamese fare! You know this place is legit because they serve young coconut drink, complete with piercing the husk yourself with a straw. Pho broth was outstanding. Surprisingly, their shrimp pad thai is better than some of the Thai restaurants nearby! They also had tasty sweet boba tea. I really hate giving bad reviews but I can't help it. I was driving through and I saw Saigon city. I had amazing experience of Saigon and the food was scrumptious. It was an empty restaurant and I felt should it be okay to buy from a deserted place? I felt why not, let's get it a try!! I was hungry and I was thinking of the yummy Vietnamese food. So wanted to try their chicken fried rice and ginger chicken. To be honest, I am very disappointed! Vietnamese are popular with their pho but Vietnamese do make amazing fried rice and this was anything but fried rice. There was no flavor, and the chicken was tough and chewy. The meat was dry and old in the vermicelli bowl (and the veggies were basically just shredded cabbage?), the pho came with about 2 meatballs cut in half (paid for extra too!), and the "spicy" house special lemongrass chicken was so dry and inedible not to mention no spice whatsoever. My wife and I decided to try the food at this restaurant in hopes of finding an excellent Vietnamese restaurant. We are still looking. The food here is not bad. It's good, if you prefer sauces that are basic in flavor. We ordered Papaya Salad with Shrimp, Pho (Dac Biet combination) and Grilled Shrimp & Pork Rice Vermicelli Platter. The Papaya salad was decent. Could use some shrimp paste and chiles in the sauce. It costed $10. The pho had a broth that tasted diluted. Could use more beef flavor and a reduction to intensify the other flavors. It was okay, but it could have been better. It costed $11.50. The rice vermicelli platter had plenty of pork and only 2 pieces of shrimp. Might want to rename it as Grilled Pork and 2 Shrimp Rice Vermicelli Platter. The components were good and fresh, but the sauce was just basic. Sauce was a touch too sweet. It costed $13. The dining room and bathroom were clean. Service was good. They don't use disposable chopsticks or spoons. Overall, I think this restaurant serves decent Vietnamese food. Everything we ordered looked fresh and was presented well. read more

We experienced just an average casual Vietnamese meal. Nothing special about it. I ordered the fried squid, which was very rubbery and under seasoned. Worst of all the breading was mushy and chewy, not crispy at all. I think it was previously-fried food that had been reheated in a microwave. I also had a ban mi sandwich. The bread and meat were very good, but there were scant vegetables on it. So it was basically a pork barbecue sandwich. Again, not bad, but nothing special. My wife had a vegetarian noodle dish that was supposed to come with rice noodles but came with egg noodles instead. I see no reason to go back. read more

I ordered pho ga (chicken- dark meat). The broth itself was perfectly fine. I tend to try the broth and the noodles/meat/etc first before determining if I should put Sriracha and how much. The broth and meat became less flavorful over time. The meat in particular dried up but was flavored just fine in the broth. I have been here before and I definitely recall Saigon City tasting better in the past, so this might be a one-time occurrence. This rating is based on this specific visit. If you tend to pay with card, keep in mind you have to spend $15 minimum to use card, otherwise cash only. Ordered pho #16 (variety of beefs) for takeout. The way they did it was a container of broth and a container with all the additives. I have to say, this is my new favorite way to eat pho. I love pho but the ingredients in the soup are too large. That makes it a pain to eat. Buy having everything in a box I could tear everything into small pieces before putting it in the broth so I could eat it easily with a spoon. I didn't have all the items I normally have at home or in the restaurant to flavor it so it wasn't a completely fair comparison but I now know how I want to eat pho from now on. read more

Happen to be staying at the hotel down the street and this place was right down the street from the international supermarket. Always go for Pho when I have Vietnamese and enjoyed it here. So I ordered bun bo hue here by complete accident. I Google Pho Saigon Oi but forgot the "Oi" so I was directed to Saigon City and ordered from them instead. Was told of my mistake when someone called from Saigon City saying they've been waiting for me to come pick up my soup. Obviously this is my fault and all though I really don't want to pay for their food because of their reputation of how mediocre it is, my husband went in to pick up the order. Came in and total was $11, paid him cash since it's they don't take card if it's under $15. The person at the register took the cash, said thank you and left to the back never to be seen again. I heard their customer service was terrible but I figured since we're just picking up food we won't be dealing with customer service much.. Went home and tried the bun bo hue since we did pay $15 for it. Bland and the pork hocks were chewy at best. If you're trying to find a good vietnamese place skip Saigon City and do the 5 minute drive to Pho Saigon Oi. Much better food and customer service. read more

I ordered the Pho chin, which is well done brisket. the meat was not flavorful at all and the noodles were hard. the broth was genuinely missing a lot of flavor even after I added hoisin sauce, lime and sriracha. A friend of mine was in the mood for Vietnamese and suggested meeting at this place for lunch on a Sunday. Located not far from the 395/95 Highway entrances/exits, Saigon City is a moderately sized family run restaurant. Service started off good as we were placing our order but after they were placed the waiter pulled out a magic trick by *poof*.....disappearing. Don't worry though folks, later on he did another magic trick to reappear....with the bill. I started off with the crispy shrimp egg rolls for an appetizer. They actually look like samosas with their triangle shaped fried pastry shell. Once I bit into it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the roll was packed with shrimp...albeit ground up shrimp. They were some of these best egg rolls I've ever had. The texture contrasts between the fried shell and the ground up shrimp really worked well. I definitely wish I had ordered more, especially after receiving my entree. My main course was the Tai Pho. A fairly large bowl of noodles, broth and eye of round steak. The noodles were properly cooked and then after that it was downhill. The meat was kinda tough and flavorless. The much more egregious issue was the lack of flavor in the broth. Very very disappointing. The prices are decent and parking is convenient BUT when it comes to this place, I think I have anal glaucoma, which in layman's terms means I can't see my a$$ returning. read more
