Always my favorite place to go in Kapolei. I recently stopped by and noticed some new recipes posted on their blackboard in front of the entrance. Especially their new additions with a sizzling skillet! Pepper skillet with brisket or steak. Creamy buttery shrimp skillet. Pork adobo. Pad Thai. It seems like this Vietnamese restaurant is expanding their selections and becoming more of an Asian fusion mix. I decided to try their two new skillet additions. The first to come out with my pepper skill with steak. In the middle, there was a block of yellowish rice mixed with corn and pepper and supposedly topped with green onions (asked for no onions, but I should have for the picture). Around the rice was the steak. My server informed me that I should mix everything before the sizzling died down. I took a bite of my mixed plate and omg. The flavor was very rich. I could taste the pepper, garlic, and their house special sauce all in this plate. My taste buds were overwhelmed with happiness! The creamy buttery shrimp shortly came after I took my first bite. The shrimps were soaked in this orange sauce and were sizzling a lot more than the first plate. When the sizzling stopped, I took a bite of the shrimp. My taste buds were screaming. The sauce was thickish with a sweet yet a kick of spiciness. This combination was amazing. Eating the shrimp with my steak rice made it 3x yummier. I'm not sure if there are new owners, but the quality of food and service has gone down to a "0." We went there this evening and we were absolutely disappointed!! Most of the food was bland or not as advertised. Example: We ordered the won ton soup- there were no won tons at all?! When we asked our server (short female Asian with glasses) she sarcastically responded and said "move it around it's under the noodles." As if she didn't want to be bothered, not to mention she didn't even come to look for herself. Yeah, we moved it around there was nothing. So, she brings us a side.. a tiny saucer size bowl with 3 little won tons in it. Even zippy's serve bigger won tons. Lol The pho my husband ordered tasted so watered down and bland. My daughter's crab soup noodle dish had little to no flavor, but spicy. It's sad because there's so many businesses out there who rely on people coming in to eat. Came here on Father's day and it was completely empty! We weren't complaining because it was quick service with delicious food! They give huge portions and since it wasn't busy, we got really quick service. My family ordered spring rolls, summer rolls, and 5 bowls of pho with two vietnamese iced coffees. The spring and summer rolls were so filling. It was enough to feed a family of 5. We got 4 medium bowls of pho and 1 large bowl. The 3 medium bowls filled up the people that ate them and the one medium and one large bowl was actually too much food so we took home the extras! The spring rolls came with 10(?) not too sure how many, but it looked like a lot - bite sized spring rolls and the summer rolls came with 4 medium sized rolls! I got the combination meats for the pho and it comes with brisket, meatball, and flank I believe. It was a good ratio of meat to noodles! The food was delicious and the coffee tasted really good. I've only order take out from here twice. Two times is my limit with giving any business a chance to prove if they're worthy. The first time, I ordered a noodle soup dish. I asked if they also provide the banana bloom, mint and all the fixings, but they don't. But the soup was good. This last visit my second order with the Banh mi sandwich, the hai nang chicken and spring rolls. The sandwich was sub par in taste. It was a bit chinsy with the meats. The chicken was dry like it's been reheated. It came with a soup, but the container it came it was used. Served with romaine lettuce, with a recent recall. But the rice was good! The spring rolls are pricey for 4. It was eleven dollars for 4 thin rolled spring rolls! It was good, but was missing mint. I'm disappointed with this Kapolei location. Desserts comprise the entire back page of the menu including tapioca, smoothies and coffees. I'll admit that the only other time I've tried Pho is from Bale Mililani. So after having it here and absolutely LOVING it, I'm a bit surprised with the less than four star review. Of course I've only tried one item so that's what I base my review on. I always feel that the with any soup dish, the flavor of the broth is what will make or break the dish. I order the Pho with special combo beef and wow, it was delicious! I generally don't drink much of the broth but this one was so flavorful that I couldn't help myself, lol! I didn't add anything else to flavor it up since I felt the broth was already so good. Later I had a tapioca which was pretty good, but I've certainly had better. Open til 2200 even on Sundays, awesome! Had a craving yesterday and couldn't get out til later... not a problem, we arrived about 10 minutes to 2100 and still were seated with lots of time to order. They didn't rush us and didn't seemed annoyed about the late arrival. As usual, I ordered #74, the beef wrapped shrimp with fine vermicelli, veggies and rice paper. It's pretty much like wrapping your own summer roll, the meats are a lot tastier though. I have been wanting to try the bánh xèo for a while, Mr. G agreed to share with me so we added it to the spread. He chose vegetarian spring rolls, vegetarian summer rolls and the lemon grass bánh mì. The summer rolls were the same just sub shrimp for tofu, blah. The bánh xèo was a huge surprise, literally. I've eaten my fair share of them in my life, only made by my mom or grandma. I've never actually attempted it at fear for failing miserably because I have no idea what measurement standard grandma had set for a bowl of this or a ladle of that... I do know that coconut milk is very present in this dish and it was evident from the fragrance wafting in the air! The taste of coconut milk didn't overpower any of the other flavors either though. I chose to have pork and shrimp in mine, just as gram makes. Except grams is made with cut pieces of shrimp and ground pork which I appreciate now because it makes it easier to eat. Pho One uses pork belly, which has the layers of fat I'm not fond of, and whole shrimps means less shrimp per bite and one big piece every 5 bites... I'm a weird picky eater, don't judge. The protein per carb/starch ratio has to be evenly distributed lol. Another thing with this Vietnamese Pancake is the insane amount of onions that were in them, my mom would have had a fit! I do not have a prob with onions, but I had to dump a bunch of them out because I just don't need that kind of stank in my life. The bean sprouts were on over load as well but that I didn't mind at all. The crisp was the best part! Oh the perfect shell of a bánh xèo is so satisfying to crack into! Overall I was really pleased. The onions were big enough and clumped together so they could easily be pulled out. If you were ever thinking of trying something new, start with that. It was so appetizing looking that a table next to us had to ask what number that was so they could make a point to order on their next visit! For just the two of us, we really did have a crazy spread so I guess it probably drew a bit of attention. But we had more than enough to take home and share with the littles! I didn't pay, but I know, for the amount and quality of food we got, the price is decent. My review is based solely on the food, as I ordered delivery from them for lunch the other day. I haven't had the dine-in experience here yet. I just was not impressed. Everything was salty. And their chili oil was so spicy! I put a little less than my usual amount, but my mouth was on fire! I don't know what happened. But I had their steak and brisket and meatball pho. The temperature was ok by the time it reached me but I'm not docking any points for it not being piping hot. The broth was just extremely salty and sweet. It didn't live up at all to a lot of other pho I've had. This is way at the bottom. My husband had the bbq mix plate and also complained that everything was salty. In terms of preparation, it was pretty quick for my order to be picked up, so that's nice. I guess that means they're pretty quick at this restaurant. It was underwhelming. The elements were almost there but there's no significance about the pho broth. Nothing stands out, it's almost commercial. Didn't even have parsley or cilantro for the topping. I have been eating here with my family since I was in high school. Every time we wanted to eat pho, we'd make the drive from waipahu to kapolei. This place is next door to Assagio's. The parking lot is small and on some weekends it can be difficult to find an open stall because Assagio's is packed. Every time we come here we never need to wait for a table. I guess we just come at the right time of day lol. I've never had a problem with any of my take out orders. When phone ordering, they'd always repeat my order back to me. Customer service isn't a problem however there was one time they were about to over charge us until my bf double checked our bill. They apologized for the mistake and easily corrected it. I love their pho! The broth is delicious ! It never tastes watery or oily. I used to pack my bowl with the loads of hoisin and chili sauce until i realized I was masking the flavor of the broth. Now days, I'll pack my bowl with the vegetables they serve you, add in some lemons, and dip my meat with hoisin and chili sauce. I always get their pho combination which includes rare steak, brisket, tendon, and beef balls. Their medium is $10.95 and their large is $11.95 Their fried spring rolls are $10 and come with four pieces cut in half. That's 8 small pieces total. Other places serve either 2 pieces or 4 half pieces for $6-$7. I've also tried their shrimp summer rolls and shredded pork rolls. Both come with two pieces and your choice of peanut or fish sauce. Their Chao Rice Porridges are also filled with great flavor. I've tried the duck and chicken porridge. It kind of reminded me of arroz caldo lol I've also tried a few rice plates. #51 includes bbq chicken, shredded pork, meat loaf, and rice. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't eat it again, i'd rather have pho lol. However, their stuffed chicken wings are bomb! You should try them at least once! It's on their daily special menu. Their stuffed chicken wings is definitely something I'd order again. They also serve fried chicken wings as an appetizer for $7.95 with 6 pieces. It was really juicy and I'd say they were kind of bigger than the wings from buffalo wild wings. Paired with sweet chili sauce, the wings were pretty good but not as bomb as their stuffed chicken wings lol. They also have Vietnamese sandwiches. I always get their house special which has pate. As we entered POK we were greeted by our server and we walked past what looked like a Mexican Cantina Bar. Even though I had read through some reviews, Luis R. wrote about how the broth tasted like iron!!?? I tried to give POK a fair chance. But I have to say I agree with Luis 100%!! We were seated and somewhat rushed into ordering as our server looked very impatient. Luckily for me, I just went with my normal order to see how POK compared to Pho & Company and Rice Paper. I ordered the following: -Shredded Pork Rolls -Summer Rolls -Bun Bo Hue Shredded Pork Rolls - $6.95. (2 stars). Totally not worth the price for these rolls. The rolls had a funny smell to them. Not sure what it was but it was noticeable! Summer Rolls - $6.95. (2 stars). I felt the same about the summer rolls. The Shrimp had an old seafood smell. I held the roll up to my nose to sniff it and it definitely smelled like it was doused in a hamper prior to being served. I took one bite and could go no further! Bun Bo Hue - $11.95. (2 stars). I tried to get Luis' comments out of my head but after a few slurps of the broth (without putting anything in it)... I could taste a metallic harsh flavor that did not sit well with me. Yes I do know Bun Bo Hue infuses pig's blood into the broth. But I have never had such a noticeable irony taste in my mouth!! I had the BF try it and all he could say is it tasted different and strange. Sad because the bowl looked so inviting!! --- All in all, I have no regrets about trying POK because I had to make a decision for myself if I would come back. For the record the BF ordered the Green Papaya Salad and said he really liked it. I didn't get to try any because the BF is horrible at sharing food! :( The service was quite curt and blunt while we were dining here but I don't rate service so it has nothing to do with my 2 star review.
