Delicious vegetarian and vegan options- highly recommend the tofu vegetable curry! Also, their pho is served with a very satisfying and generous plate of the freshest and most flavorful Thai basil I've ever had. Their portions are much more generous than those I've received in other Vietnamese restaurants. Also, their brown rice is sticky and nutty, which can be hard to find in Boston. wish i knew this the first time i visited but you can actually get small, medium, or large sizes of a dish, even if it's labeled "large bowl" on the menu! 4/28/22 -dac biet pho: wasn't as hungry during this visit so i opted for the small sized bowl. from what i remember, most of the small pho bowls were priced the same at around $11. in my opinion, the small bowl isn't even that small; it's just the right amount of food where you can get full but not stuffed. this bowl comes with rare steak, well-done flank, brisket, tendon, tripe, scallions, and cilantro. they also give you a separate plate of bean sprouts, lime wedges, and thai basil for the table. my only complaint is that the meat was a big tougher to chew on this time around, but the portion was still very much worth the price. i really love the rice noodles here because they're cooked just the right amount and soak up the flavorful broth so well! DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY THROUGH THE PHO PASTEUR WEBSITE. I used to eat here regularly pre-Covid, during Covid I've ordered delivery through GrubHub a bunch of times. It's a cold and rainy day, perfect for some Pho and an order of veggie rice rolls, so I thought I'd check out their website and see if they offer direct delivery (to save them the middleman fees) and yes! So I ordered delivery, paid and then got a text with a link to the Uber eats app. I ordered at 1:30pm for a 2pm delivery and the food arrived at 3:30pm. I called the restaurant and they said no one was available to pick it up. Had a I known it was just Uber Eats I would have just stuck with Grub Hub, I was hoping I would be paying someone from the restaurant directly for delivery. So I walk over to Chinatown looking for a bowl of pho and boy did this place fill that need. Ordered the XL bowl and a tiger beer. Service was fast and got it within 10 minutes of my order. I don't like giving out 1 stars but I need to for this one. My family and I only came here because we knew that you can never go wrong with Vietnamese food. Usually, it's fast and tasty. But damn. This was no bueno! Service was really bad. But that's okay... we only cared for the food honestly because we were hungry. Please refer to the pictures. The food looked bad... and it tasted worse than it looked. The egg rolls were awful. They tasted like they got re-fried 5 times before it arrived to our table. The beef skewers tasted like beef jerky. We ordered curry chicken noodle. My goodness. The chicken was so dry and sad looking and there was no curry taste. It looked like they just dumped some curry powder in water and dropped in some overly cooked chicken chunks. As for the beef noodle soup, it was meh. I don't think they know how to cut/slice up the beef. It was incredibly tough to eat. The soup was not as flavorful as what we would get in NYC Chinatown. read more

Food (1.5/2): I had the pho with brisket and rare steak. It's definitely one of the better ones I've had. The broth has a very pleasant aroma and flavor of a well-prepared beef broth/stock. Though not completely clear, it's much clearer compared to other pho I've been to. The brisket was very soft and juicy though the steak was normal (tender but not the best I've tasted). I tried a little bit of their rice dish and it was ok (beef short rib), nothing to write home about. Service/wait-time/cleanliness (1/2): Some of the waiters were incredibly friendly and amiable but others were curt and snappy though that seems to be the norm for a "good Asian restaurant" per my colleagues. Cleanliness is so-so and you'd occasionally find unmaintained items/areas. Price (0.5/1): I would've given them 1/1 but the bill they gave me had an unknown $22 dish charged. Glad I checked because otherwise, they wouldn't have revised the bill and removed it. I'm giving them the slight benefit of doubt that it was an honest mistake. read more

I really didn't think much of this place as I generally get the same Beef Pho and fried spring rolls when I go for Vietnamese. I once asked some Vietnamese patients of mine where the best place for authentic Vietnamese food in Boston was, and they had one response: Pho Pasteur. Why is this place presumably named after Louis Pasteur, famed French biologist? I have no idea. Why is the service here so wacky, where you'll have multiple servers asking for your order within 30 seconds of sitting down, and for some reason one of whom decides to shake your hand before walking away? I have no idea (but that guy was actually super nice). Why did I get a dirty napkin with a lipstick stain already on it for me to use? I have no idea, but that was gross. Why is the Yelp cover photo for a Vietnamese restaurant a picture of Pad Thai? I don't know but I'm truly embarrassed about it (shout out to the family next to me trying to order chicken ramen). But! What I do know is that the food here is properly delicious, and puts so many other Vietnamese restaurants around here to shame. Things aren't perfect--the vermicelli noodles were not fresh at all, and that napkin thing was truly horrifying--but Pho Pasteur clearly isn't trying to deliver a 5 star experience. Solid pho, no frills joint - XL beef ($13.50) came out fast and pretty piping hot (although they took the order of a guy who came later than I did and his food came out before mine). The brisket pieces were all mostly fat not at all like brisket pieces you'd get at an American BBQ place. There was also only 1 long piece of tripe. The mung bean sprouts also didn't appear to have been rinsed and were kind of not fresh... But the basil leaves were wet and appeared to have been washed. I can't give this place a bigger recommendation. We both ordered #13, their traditional beef-based ph. Our waitress was generous enough to steer us away from #14, the x-large version of what we ended up ordering, which definitely would have been too large! When the food came, the waitress was very eager to show us how to eat the soup, and turn/cook the meat in the broth (though, this was not our first time eating ph). We've been going to Pho Pasteur since the 1990s, and it is still the gold standard for Pho. The broth is intense and ethereal, rich with star anise. The noodles are a perfect al dente. The Pho Tai, Nam, Gan, Sach (rare steak, well-done flank, tendon, and tripe) is superb. The tripe is delicate and crunchy, and the rare steak is just right. Order the small Pho size, which should satisfy most appetites. The price is right (you can easily keep lunch under $15 per person). It is no frills, but rightly places the focus on extremely well-executed Vietnamese dishes. We've had Pho all over the US, and this is one of the best in the nation. Street parking only and hard to find parking spots. This place is very busy and tight when we went in at 1pm on a Monday but were still seated immediately. Exterior cleanliness is as clean as Chinatown goes and it is equally as bad inside. Dirty floors and tables that are wiped carelessly. They gave us hot tea when we they gave us menus. The tea is nothing special. I ordered the basic XL beef pho and jackfruit shake. They brought out the usual dish of basil, bean sprouts, and lime for the pho. The bean sprouts and basil do not look fresh nor cleaned to the standard I like. Beef pho was delicious but average as far as basic beef pho goes. I love that this pho is very meaty with different slices of beef and the noodles are the right elasticity. Broth is well made and drinkable. I asked for the jackfruit shake to come in a to-go cup and the cup came with a hair stuck on the side of the cup. The shake was good though and was not too sweet. Overall, the food is good. But they need to focus on cleanliness and quality control of their food products, even during busy lunch hours. Also, not exactly a good environment to enjoy the food as it was so tightly packed that we were sitting with our heads almost touching those of the people in the neighboring tables. The environment isn't the loveliest, but the vibe i get is not meant for you to linger after you finish your food. Got the pad thai with tofu, which was decent, but it was somewhat bland, and the onions were undercooked. My friend's traditional hot and sour soup was more flavorful, and had that spicy-sour taste typical of traditional Southeast Asian spicy soups. There was a lot of salmon in the dish, which was surprising given how many restaurants are stingy with fish portions. The salmon wasn't high-end or anything (it definitely tasted previously frozen), but it was nice to see the generous portions. Overall, would recommend if you want a quick bite at a popular place in the heart of Chinatown. In my experience, it needs to be boiling hot so you can get the flavor from basil and bean sprouts cook well before eating. This soup was kinda cold (but incredibly delicious broth). I have only had their pho - it is one of my go to pho places. It is always busy here no matter if you come during lunch or dinner - so always allow some extra time for waiting for a table and even after you are seated, there will be some wait for service; but that is what you usually can expect from a place that knows how to cook amazing food (pho - in this case). The portion is generous even if you're not getting the XL size soup and the broth is delicious and the amount of meat they throw in there is definitely more than enough and the price you just can't beat - under $10 and you will be so full you are practically rolling out of that place. This is one of my fave places in Chinatown - I might need to start expanding to other items on their menu.... read more

He was telling me that their beef teryaki will bring you back to the days when you could buy single sticks at the carts downtown. Those were the bomb! We all ordered pho; I can't remember what number I ordered, but it came with tripe, tendon, and rare steak. Even though I got a small it was very filling. Consistency is perfect for dipping and comes with some peanut crunch and scallions on top. Traditional pad Thai is one of the best I've had here. Surprisingly the steak is a good choice too! Pho Pho Pho! Obviously by the name, it's Pho is amazing. Traditional Vietnamese soup with herbs and your choice of meat. Incredibly tasty, warms the soul, and cleanses the body. It's no frills here and you might have to wave down a server (any server can help you!) but go and enjoy this wonderful, family-run and authentic restaurant. Takes cash or credit. I've been coming to this restaurant since childhood and I have to say, this is one of the better Pho restaurants in Chinatown. I always get either Pho Dac Biet or Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio.
