Saigon house special pho
Tien-En L.

So this is a hole in the wall pho restaurant near the Hard Rock Cafe run by an older husband and wife. There wasn't anyone there when I stopped by at 3pm. Menu: Welp. The specials which is half of the menu isn't available, so I wished they just blacked out that page? Actually black out ANYTHING that isn't an option. Food: The quality is great but they do try to skimp when they can. Pho - 4/5 Actually decently solid pho. The rice noodles were cooked well, the quality of the meat was decent (rare sliced beef, flank, fatty brisket, and beef balls). The soup was actually good. It could've been simmered longer, but you can taste the broth and the spices. For 9.00 it was pretty decent, considering Atlantic City is fairly expensive. The portion was slightly small, but it is filling. The problem I had was there was NO basil, cilantro, green onions, oyster sauce, sriracha or anything for the matter accompanying the bowl. Here's the thing... it's ON the menu that it comes with the sides but you really don't get ANY of it....That's not cool. Iced Coffee - 4/5 Actually it's very caffeinated, strong, could use a little bit more condensed milk so that it's not as bitter, but you can really taste the Robusta coffee bean, so that's a plus. The problem is that this is drip coffee which means it takes FOREVER to make before it's served. This was served when I was 75% done with eating the pho. Service: 2/5 This is where it's slightly cringe worthy and not pleasant. The waitress didn't even give me a menu. She just asked if I wanted rice or noodles. Also her hovering around when I was looking at the menu, and asking for the check was kind of creepy. I didn't realize this place didn't take card until later, so that's a eh I wished I knew that. When I asked her if they took cash or card she just kept on yelling it's 13.00..... I usually DON'T carry cash on me, and I had 0 idea that this was a cash only place. Thankfully I did have just enough to actually pay for the meal.... Seriously, they need to have a sign that says CASH ONLY. The older husband was cool though. Literally left me alone in peace. Decor: very clean, simple, mom and pop pho joint. Overall 3.5 Great food, okay price, would I come back again...probably not because the service was not good and their menu was not accurate.

Came here on New Year's day. After a night of drinking this was much needed. The place is small with about 6 tables. I came with 3 other friends so 4 of us total. 2 friends got the spicy noodle soup and my other friend and I got pho. The bowls were a bit small and kinda hard to eat. Soup was good though. My friend said they used the incorrect meat for the spicy one. I think they used beef tendon instead. Overall it was ok but still satisfying. The owners were really friendly and nice.

Good food and good hospitality! My only gripe is please let the customers look at the menu before asking them if they want soup or rice. But the owner and waiter were very attentive and took care of our needs. Pho was good on a cold winter night!

My crispy banh xeo!

This is a new spot in AC right down the street from the Hard Rock. I went there for some Pho and my favorite dish, banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe). I have to say the Banh Xeo was my favorite of the two. It was very crispy on the outside and had the usual filling (pork, shrimp, sprouts). In fact, I just made myself hungry just thinking about it. The Pho was good but not great. It still satisfied my craving but I would want a stronger flavor in the broth. The owner of the establishment was very nice and really put a lot of effort in ensuring a good customer experience. I must say the server forgot to give us the water we ordered but to be fair, she was running around tending to various customers. I would go back again, particularly for the banh xeo.

I was surprised at how large the soft shell was, both were absolutely delicious. There are a plethora of servers, runners, and hosts servicing the dining room. For a Sunday night at 6:30, I was surprised at how uncrowded and comfortable the dining room was. A definite go to for sushi and fans of Japanese cuisine.

I go back once in a while for a special occasion. The servers and hostesses are all very friendly. There's a lot seating available. It has a subtle, low-lit atmosphere. You have to try their tuna crispy rice and shishito pepper appetizers! We get them every time and they are delicious! The wagyu tacos and lobster dumplings are delicious but not as filling. They run out of their uni often, so if they have any left for the night you definitely need to order some. They are pricy but are delivered fresh. They're always sweet and creamy every time. I love their toro hand roll and scallop hand roll. They have A5 Wagyu beef cooked at the table with a hot stone. It's priced per ounce and the cost can add up quickly, but it's a nice treat to try and share with others. The Chilean sea bass miso was rich and well seasoned. This is the best sushi place I've tried in AC so far!

Overall, we all enjoyed our food. Even on a holiday, we didn't have to wait long to be seated, which was a pleasant surprise. Matt did a great job serving us he was attentive, friendly, and quick with anything we needed. We never had to wait long for refills or requests. The only reason I'm taking off one star is because they didn't have sushi, which was something we were hoping for.

Management was nice enough to identify what she could have on our recent visit. The manager also said that the low sodium soy sauce they use doesn't have cornstarch in it. However, my question is; why can't the Chef or one of the cooks make, for example, fried rice using the low sodium soy sauce? Are they that bad that they don't know how to modify a recipe? I've been to many places that modify their menu to accommodate an allergy. I got the firecracker shrimp with brown rice. The shrimp was tasty but not as hot as i'd like it and a little on the sweet side. My wife did get a nice salmon dish which was fine for her allergy and she did enjoy it. Unfortunately we just had salmon the night before so she was looking for a change. The place itself looks great and the service was good for our large table.

By the time we sat down, we were tired enough to believe in luxury again. All three of us ordered the $150 Omakase, because sometimes you need to let someone else make the decisions. We also each ordered a Lychee Elderflower Martini, and that drink was a revelation. Sweet but not syrupy, smooth as silk, and served with quiet confidence. It was, without question, the highlight of the night. That is not to say the food disappointed. The fish was fresh and handled with skill. Every plate was a small work of art. But I've eaten many Omakase meals before, and this one didn't quite live up to its reputation or its price. Each course was good, even very good, but never transcendent. It felt like a performance slightly off its rhythm. Service was attentive and professional, almost to a fault. Our server explained each dish in the kind of detail that makes you wish you'd taken notes, yet when we asked follow-up questions, the answers grew vague, like the end of a story that someone forgot to finish. The dining room itself was clean and modern, full of light and shadow, a careful blend of minimalism and excess. Still, it was oddly loud, even though the place was mostly empty. The windows looked out toward the boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean, but the glass was streaked and dirty, muting the view into something almost symbolic. Beauty, slightly obscured. Here's the truth. In Atlantic City, this is probably as good as sushi gets. The meal was enjoyable, even memorable in moments. But there are sushi locations in the Tri-state area that perform the same act with greater precision and heart. If you are here already, go. You will eat well. But if you have the choice, there are better temples to fish elsewhere. I give it four stars out of respect, and maybe habit. Three and a half would be closer to the truth.
