I can be very picky, even when I'm eating the same type of food from a different restaurant. I love pho and I had two spots I used to frequent. However, the quality of their food changed over the years. I haven't had good pho in the past 2 two years. Finding Pho Star Bowl was a gem!! The beef was extremely tender, the broth was flavorful (I intentionally saved some to drink for breakfast this morning and it was still very delicious!), and the jasmine tea was so good! Mediocre. I ordered the cha gio (pork egg rolls) and Bun Tom,Heo Nuong , Cha Gio (Vermicelli Noodle Bowl with charbroiled pork, shrimp and egg roll.) Cha gio has little to no pork in it. It appears that this establishment is cutting costs by filling their pork egg rolls with mostly taro and glass noodles. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they had served me vegetarian egg rolls as the filling resembled mush. The vermicelli bowl was underwhelming as it did not contain bean sprouts, mint, fried shallot, or peanuts. When ordering the food online, I referred to the photos featured on their website. Wanted to get dinner around Tyler Mall last Friday evening, and picked this place since it clearly mentioned - VEGAN/VEGETARIAN options. The short answer is - NOT available. Smip this place if vegan/vegetarian. My friend and I ordered Noodles and Pho Bowl, and requested the server repeatedly that we are vegetarians (by religion), so NO meat, or fish. Especially go check the sauce. Food comes out pretty quick. And the first thing we both smell from our food is a strong fish smell!!!! The pho bowl came with fake bacon too, a no no in my opinion. I barely snapped one photo by the time they finished my transaction. I wished I had enough time to sit and eat, I feel like to service would be very good here. They have one size of bowl, I would consider it regular/medium. Not small or large. Definitely enough to fill you up and have extra. They provide the average amount of vegetables, sauces and noodles. Where they really shine is the meat. I had the Pho Ga and the chicken was very good. All chicken breast pieces cut to approximately 4 inches each. Stopped here for lunch on our way back from Joshua Tree - solid place for popular Vietnamese dishes. The menu is smaller than older ones I saw online, but they still have a good amount of options. Luckily for us, we came while they were having a special that included a free drink with any meal purchase of at least 10.99! We all got a Vietnamese iced coffee or Thai iced tea on the house! Both were very tasty. As for food, we started off with egg rolls for the table, they came out super hot and fresh! Ate it with the fish sauce, chili sauce, and wrapped it in lettuce. I ordered the rare steak and brisket pho (#13), so good! I do wish they had tendon though, it looked like they use to but not anymore. Chicken pho is also no longer on the menu and a friend of ours doesn't eat beef, but we asked and they said they're still able to make it! She liked it and was happy that it was made with chicken broth versus beef broth (some places do that) and it had chicken breast in it. Others ordered the vermicelli dish with beef, shrimp, and egg rolls. Really tasty with the fish sauce! Overall we were very happy with our meal and the service here. read more

Not sure what happened to the service here. We had been coming here for years but recently during our meal, they came back to check on us ZERO times. No water refill, nothing. We had to go up to someone to ask for boxes as well as the check (twice) because they refused to come back ever. They brought only one water when we asked for two and promptly walked away serving other people. We asked twice for another water and it took about ten minutes because they are choosing to do other things instead. Such as socializing between the staff for long periods of time up front, or two people cleaning up a table together and talking some more an hour before closing (they weren't busy in need of empty tables). The Pho broth was super flavorful. The pan-fried noodles lacked slightly in flavor, but the veggies were cooked perfectly. But they have a selection of chili sauce, Sriracha, and Hoisin sauce ready to go on each table. I ordered their shrimp pho and spring rolls. The broth was very clear and flavorful. The texture of the noodles was just perfect. Pho Star Bowl is a typical Vietnamese restaurant with an atypical decor. I liked all of the posters and artwork that covered the walls, along with the music that played while we ate. It's something you don't usually see in a Vietnamese restaurant, and I appreciated it. There's a couple of reasons why this place only gets 3 stars from me. The first is that the menu is very small and limited. I'm used to having a dozen or more pho options when I go to a Vietnamese restaurant, but I'm not even sure if there were a dozen different items on the entire menu. The pho options weren't great either. They only had a handful of ingredients to choose from; where I usually like getting a combination bowl with a bunch of different ingredients, the number of ingredients in each bowl were so small that I went with a rice plate instead. You can count the number of pho dishes on one hand, and there's only like one or two rice/noodle plate options. Secondly, the food was just average. Nothing special to write home about. It's authentic, sure, but it didn't "wow" me like some other places I've been to. Service was pretty good, and we were in and out in no time. It wasn't very busy, though, to be fair. I don't think this place is bad, but I probably wouldn't come back here. read more

Best Pho we've had...recommended by a friend who is Vietnamese, we didn't realize there was this Pho restaurant tucked in Riverside. The surrounding plaza is mediocre but once you get inside wow wow wow. The owner has his artwork all over the walls and when you walk in it's like a gallery that is amazing. Now back to the Pho, the broth is the best broth I have ever tasted. I've been to so many Pho places and this does not even compare. The grilled pork (and I don't regularly eat pork) is so flavorful and I cannot get enough. The texture of the pork is soft and buttery and it doesn't have that gamey taste pork normally has. The egg rolls are light, crispy and can choose from pork or vegetable. We had the pork egg rolls and it does not disappoint. Wrap the egg roll in the lettuce, dip in sauce and repeat...Yum!!! Can't wait till it's cold so o can eat more Pho. Service is also great from start to finish which is hard to come by in the sampler mom and pop shops.
