Anyhoo, I made my way to the Viet Mama cafe. As I pulled up to the entrance I remembered I had been here twice before a few years back. The first time, I remember, was good but don't remember anything else. The second time I left because everything I attempted to order they seemed to be out of. Hopefully third time would be the charm. I don't know why I do this but I went for pho but ended up getting a rice plate of grilled lemongrass chicken. I should've gone with the pho. The food arrived fairly quickly and I started to add some sriracha and hoisin sauce to my rice. Usually when I order a rice plate at other restaurants it comes with some lettuce, shredded carrots, a few cucumber slices, and sometimes some daikon. On my plate was a sad little piece of lettuce, 5 pieces of shredded carrot, one small tomato and cucumber slice. Then I tried a piece of chicken. I love lemongrass. The smell and taste of it, I am so happy and grateful to whomever discovered it and started using it in their cooking. As I brought the piece to my mouth I noticed there wasn't even a hint of a lemongrass scent and even less of a taste. Not to mention half of the chicken was fat and skin. I also ordered a fried egg with my plate which came a few minutes later. It was actually the best part of the meal. I ate about a third of it and asked for a takeout box, packed it up, paid my bill, and left. I ate half of it the next morning and threw the rest out. It's not very good the next day. The service was friendly and fast but I will not return here no matter how much I may crave some late night pho even though I'd probably end up ordering a rice plate.
