I was really pleasantly surprised by the quantity and the price of the food here! It is so hard to find a decently priced bowl of pho especially around the UT Austin campus. I'll be real, I went here for the first time four years ago, was not super impressed and never went back. But I recently came back to try it again, and I was wayyy more impressed. But we were looking in the area for lunch, and noticed low ratings were rampant, and I actually commented that the students around here must be some tough reviewers. I ordered the Vietnamese crepes, as I had never seen anything like this before at an Asian restaurant. And my husband ordered a grilled beef Banh Mi SANDWICH. Again, never have seen a sandwich before on a Vietnamese menu! My crepes were made from a coconut rice batter and were very thin. Too thin, in fact, to pick up and a bit messy, so I just used a knife and fork. They were stuffed with pork and shrimp, green onions, and bean sprouts. I added lettuce and cilantro from the plate to my crepes. I used some of the sauce, which was tasty. I now notice on the menu it says fish sauce, but the sauce had a sweet and non-fishy taste. My husband LOVED his sandwich, although I didn't try a bite because I was too full from my own dish. I was in town for Austin city limits and we really wanted some far and so we were able to walk here from the AT&T hotel that's located on the campus. Once we got here we were able to sit immediately because they have a lot of seating inside and it wasn't that busy. Once we ordered all of the food came out relatively quickly. The broth really hit the spot so I really enjoyed my combination pho. The staff was very kind and refilled our waters every time our water was low. They might not always have the Sriracha sauce on the table but you can definitely ask for it. We had the Vietnamese coffee, which was really strong and tasty. In my opinion, the spring roll could be a little bit better and I wish the sauce was a little bit more chunkier with peanuts, but it was fine. For some reason this place makes me feel at home, I don't know if it's the neon signs by the entrance or the booths lining the walls, but this place is warmth. We found this Vietnamese restaurant when we got to Austin around lunchtime and planned on touring UT later that day, so we stopped by here for lunch first thing. This place is catered to mostly students who want to grab a bite during the day. Their staff and service were polite and friendly, but the food was not all that compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I've been to. Their menu has quite a lot of variety to choose from. I ordered their banh xeo, which had more meat than bean sprouts in it, and the mi xao don my grandma ordered was salty. Not worth it and I know what authentic shaken beef should be like. The Vietnamese crepe was soggy (should be crispy) maybe be cause the sauce spilled every where? Cute little whole in the wall place located next to the UT campus. I'd never even noticed this place existed until Yelp recommended it to me. On this particular day, I decided to walk the 1.5 miles it took to get here and oh boy, it was totally worth it. I ordered the vegetarian lo-mein and the portions was massive for how much you pay. I really got to pay more attention to Yelp reviews. Yelp reviews are always right. This really is a 3 star place. I ordered lemongrass stirfry and a side of vegan broth. The lemongrass stirfry was a large vegetable stirfry and the portions were very generous, but the stirfry itself did not have a single element of lemongrass flavor at all. I have had lemongrass many times and I would bet anything that there wasn't a tiniest bit of lemongrass in the stirfry that I could see (it has a distinct appearance) or flavor-it was a very plain veggie stirfry. Now, if the description was "plain veggie stirfry" I wouldnt be mad, but it claimed it would have lemongrass flavor and be spicy, both of which were even remotely true. I seriously dont get why they didnt just change the description so it wouldn't disappoint. I had to drown it in sriracha at home to even eat it. Now I would have given 2 stars however the vegan broth was absolutely delicious. I might've given this place much better reviews if I had gotten the pho I guess. The food is okay for fast food but the price is high. Just fyi, there is an upcharge of $3 for fried rice. So the main dish is $17.00 for a lunch serving. The staff is very nice, and they are short staffed. The crab Rangoon is really tasty and there are 6 in a serving. They are made fresh and these were some of the few places where you actually see pieces of the imitation crab meat. The spring roll was well done too. I think I would just eat it with the plain rice or vermicelli....I don't know if there is an upcharge because the staff does not inform you of that. Will I go there again...maybe for a quick meal. I have never had food smell so bad I can't eat it while being unable to tell whether it's gone bad. Ordered pho with tripe, sliced beef, and tendon. It smelled so awful that it turned my stomach. Shockingly bad, like "really probably turned" bad. But the odor had a "bleachiness" to it. So I *think* they didn't completely clean and prep the tripe, because that "bleachiness" can come through with tripe. Or else the beef went bad and had been dropped in the sink. Strangely, the broth I didn't pour into the bowl also smelled, just not as bad as the bowl with the meat in it. I eat pho regularly, and usually with tripe. Never encountered this before. I like pho. I dated a Vietnamese guy in high school and his mother whipped up some Vietnamese food for us every so often. I'd never tried Vietnamese before that, but something about the combination of spices and bean sprouts and thin noodles have stuck with me, and every so often I need a pho fix to feel okay about life again. So, Pho (the restaurant) is a good place to get that fix. It's very no-frills, no-nonsense. Some of the waitstaff do not speak English. The bowls of food, even the small ones, are enormous. And the food is great. I typically get only pho here, but friends of mine have gotten rice dishes and I've tried them. I'm not a fan. I'm used to Japanese sticky rice, and these dishes have the kind of harder, drier rice that, in my opinion, doesn't taste as good. The dishes are inexpensive and good for a student budget, but if I moved out of the campus location, I'm not sure if I would drive all the way to Guadalupe and MLK and try to find parking in order to eat this pho. read more
