This spot is simple, you order your pho and pick the size. The bowl is huge and a small can easily be a large. The sound of slurping and squirting of hoisin fill the room. It can sound kinda funny but it's part of the process. The plate of bean sprouts, lime, and basil are alway aromatic. I enjoy the various soup offerings from beef to veggie. Heard pretty good reviews about this chain so when I was in the area, I decided to check it out. First time here and here are my impressions. Atmosphere - clean, simple decor with lots of mirrors to make the place look bigger. Service - quick. The waiter brought us glasses of ice water almost right as we sat down. Food - menu just has assorted types of pho. There are no fancy appetizers, bun cha, plate lunches that you might find at other Vietnamese restaurants. We went in the later afternoon, so it was just us in the restaurant for a while before someone came in to get a to-go order, and then a couple came if after us. Friend got the #14 medium - Tai Chin Nam Gau Gan Sach eye-round steak, well-done flank, brisket, tendon, and tripe. It came with a plate of fresh herbs, a wedge of lime, a few slices of jalapeno and some raw bean sprouts. I got the Pho Ga which is the shredded chicken pho. We both found the broth to be on the sweeter side, but it helped to squeeze some lime to make it more well rounded. My friend said his bowl of pho was fine, sweeter broth than he liked, not tons of meat even though he ordered a medium. The chicken was definitely chicken breast as you can tell from how lean it was. I'm sure some people like it that way, but personally, I found the chicken to be too lean to the point it was dry even though it was in soup. I know it sounds odd, but for those who have tried it they will know what I mean. Is it the best pho on University Ave? This is the spot that introduced my wife and me to pho, many years ago! We, along with many of our friends, have fond memories of coming here during the cold days of winter, or during finals week when we need it some comfort in the midst of chaos. We now come back approximately once per year with our three little dudes to show them how good pho can be! There are five of us, and three smalls or two mediums are more than enough to get all of us fed and warmed up. This is the place that taught us the importance of bean sprouts, basil leaves and how delicious a little bit of lime can be in the soup. Back in the day they also used to give you cream puffs with your order. I'm not sure when that changed, but it is the sole reason that I cannot give them five stars. This is a favorite of a friend. I called to double check a few things since I am gluten-free and have a beef allergy. I learned that all the pho comes with beef broth, even the chicken. The exception is the vegan pho which has vegetable broth. They did not know if the broth of either was gluten-free (even though pho broth typically is) and I can't take the chance so we couldn't have it. They didn't even want to find out if it was gluten-free. So just be aware so you don't get sick if you have dietary needs. read more

Came here on a Saturday afternoon after visiting the Quad at UW to witness the Cherry Blossoms bloom season to find a place to have something warm and hot to taste on a rainy forecast. Luckily there were Vietnamese restaurants nearby just by 7 min walk which was so convenient. I ordered a medium Pho Bo Vien with meatballs and I did my usual topping it off with lots of fresh mint herbs, mung bean shoots, two jalapeño slices, chili oil, tiene squeeze of lime all over my pho and noodles before making my sriracha and hoison dipping sauce for my meatball. It was crunchy and savory. The inside was not too bad more cozy and chill place rather than a traditional pho restaurant. Downside of this place is there were not any appetizers to go with my pho but hopefully in the future they could add like fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce, fried fish cakes, tofu, or perhaps crunchy Vietnamese chicken salad to their menu. Pho Than Bros is a great place if you need a quick bite. It's not the best pho I've ever had, but service is faster than any other pho restaurant on The Ave. Note that pho is the only item on their menu; they do offer a vegetarian/tofu pho option though. I usually get either the pho with rare beef or rare beef and brisket. The small size is filling enough for me, but I think other restaurants serve larger portions and are more generous with the meat. With that said, this is the only Vietnamese place on The Ave that still gives out complimentary cream puffs, so at least you get free dessert. The restaurant is clean, but the decor is pretty plain. It's basically just mirrors on the walls. Service could also be friendlier, but at least they're fast. Long story short, Pho Than is your average, small business, family-owned pho place. Some of my Vietnamese friends claim it's the most authentic out of the options on The Ave, but I think that the broth here is more on the diluted side. I'm pretty sure they're a little cheaper than Little Saigon and Pho Shizzle though, because I paid under $10 for a small bowl including tip. A lot of my friends told me to come to Pho Than Brothers because they deemed it as the best pho place on the ave. However, there are quite a few pho places on the ave that are available. A lot of people on Yelp complain about the service here but I found my service experience here to be alright. I was seated promptly and they came to us right when were ready to order. We ordered quickly and they took in our orders. We didn't even wait for 5 minutes. The food just came out piping hot and ready to go. I'm not very biased about pho places since pho tastes generally the same to me. The noodles were fully cooked, and the broth was still pretty flavorful. There was a lot of meat, more meat than I usually receive in pho. I was having some pretty strong pho cravings so I was really happy to just have some pho. The unique thing about this pho place is that it has size options about small, medium, large and extra large. Typically pho places don't offer a medium size, but I actually like this because I always eat more than a small and less than a large when I'm really hungry. So the fact that this pho place has a larger spectrum of sizes is really nice. Overall, it's a typical pho place to me. Nothing too amazing but not bad or horrible. I don't have anything to complain about this place and so I would come back here if I ever had any pho cravings. However, I have yet to find an outstanding pho place. Oh man. This place has not changed since I use to frequent here during college back in 2002-2007. I'm back on campus to get my technical writing certificate, and came by to get my pho fix before my final. The pho was delicious and the cream puffs were just as I remember. However, since 2007, more pho places popped up on the ave so it took away from Than Bros. This place will always have a special place in my heart and will come here until I'm done with school or if I am in the area. Staff are friendly, food came out quickly to me, seeing i was by myself, and there were two girls already eating on the other side of the restaurant. Though there are many pho places to choose from on The Ave, this one has to be the best! I am so happy I found my new pho place. Their seating arrangement is smart and space-efficient. There is one giant table in the middle of the room where they seat single customers. There are always quite a few lone diners in there, and that makes me feel comfortable stopping in there when I'm by myself for a quick lunch. The pho exactly meets my expectations for pho. The meat is cut to exactly the right mouthful size (a problem I've had at other pho restaurants) and the noodle/meat ratio is just right. Every time I've been there the food has come out almost immediately. When they bring out your sprouts for the pho, they also give you a free cream puff! Most of the pho on and around the Ave is unfortunately average. This is true of Pho Than Brothers as well. What you can expect here is a large portion of pho for your expectations (no matter what size you order) for a reasonable price, and relatively thinly sliced meats. The broth is more than fine, and this is often one of the busiest pho restaurants on the Ave, which indicates to me that they must be doing something right (it's most likely the low cost). Honestly, my favorite part about coming to Pho Than Brothers over other pho restaurants on the Ave is the cream puffs they give out at the end of each meal. I used to leave the soup unfinished but then I read that they made it with real beef bones and spent a lot of time boiling it, rather than using beef bouillon. This is probably my favorite pho place on the Ave (although there aren't many). The service is extremely quick and the pho has always been delicious. My biggest complaint is that they don't give you a large enough serving of meat. I usually either get the 14 or 3, but both times they haven't given me much meat. It has to have the right 'bounce' to it. Not too hard and not too soft. If the noodle is done right, then that restaurant deserves to be THE pho place. I used to be on a pho craze and ate pho almost every day so I have many experiences to compare to. Pho than brothers is probably the most popular pho place in the u-district. The service is fast and efficient, and the food is pretty decent. But personally I prefer Pho Tran (nearby) a bit better than this place. I ordered a veggie pho, and it came with tofu, mushrooms, rice noodles, carrots, broccoli, cilantro and onions. A side dish of bean sprouts, basil leaves, lime, and cream muffins was also provided. I love the hoisin sauce on the table. The con is that it's always really busy, and sometimes there's not enough space to eat. It's sanitation is also questionable. This is the best pho I've had in Seattle and it's fast and cheap. The fact that it comes with a free cream puff as well just puts it totally over the top. I always get the veggie pho which comes with delicious tofu and mushrooms in it, though I'm told that the chicken (and all other meats really) here are great as well. This location is definitely one of the smaller and less clean of the Than Bros shops but their pho is no less delicious. So, ok, sometimes when I'm sitting at the back 2-person table, I see bugs of various sizes crawling along the wall. Yes, it's gross, but I also see bugs like that in my house and pay them no mind until I'm done with my meal. Maybe the conditions aren't so clean, but I've never gotten sick from eating their pho, and the flavor remains unparalleled to other pho places. Plus, there's all those medical reports out suggesting that the recent upsurge in food allergies might be due to being raised in too-clean homes.
