I've eaten here twice. The first time I got standard beef pho and it was ok, maybe a 3/5 but I felt like it was a little on the pricey side for a pho place. Plus really skimpy on the limes, basil and jalapeños. Second time I decided to try something else and it was AWFUL. I decided to try their seafood pho expecting the fresh whole shrimp, clams and fish in fish/chicken base. What they brought to me was frozen shrimp, funky tasting small mussels, IMITATION CRAB MEAT (!) and some octopus (that was bizarrely enough fresh and tasty) in a bowl of beef pho broth. I honestly don't think they had any idea of how to make seafood pho and thinking back on my two dining experiences and the reviews here it is all adding up. For one the place seems to be always dead and I've never, not once seen a Vietnamese customer in there which is the opposite of nearby Ms Saigon. Speaking of Vietnamese; the staff don't sound Vietnamese... I don't speak a word of either language but they sound much more like Chinese to me- I could be totally wrong but something just seemed off. Now, they never have Vietnamese customers and they apparently don't know how to make any Vietnamese dishes properly other than the beef pho (my seafood pho experience and the multiple summer roll and peanut sauce stories here on yelp)... And again, I may be totally wrong but I get the feeling the owner is some Chinese guy that decided to try to cash in on the pho fad but really has no clue what he is doing beyond basic beef pho. Overall, it is slightly pricier than other pho places, the beef pho is average and the other food sucks. Go the two miles down the road for Ms Saigon. Oh and I had a stomach ache for hours after the seafood pho experience. read more

I walked in and there were 8 other guests. The place looks very new and clean. I ordered the lunch special for $10 - the chicken pho was excellent and the two spring rolls were nice too. I've never left a review on yelp, but this was place was so bad I had to leave my first review. First, we sat down and the guy took our orders. My friend ordered a large pho, I got grilled chicken rice and fried egg, and we ordered the spring and summer rolls. Nobody came to bring us water. After waiting for about ten minutes we had to finally tell the server to bring us water. After another ten minutes the summer rolls finally come out. When the pho finally came out my friend said the broth and noodles weren't very good. After he was just about done with his pho my order came out. Then finally the spring rolls came out. Again, we had to tell the server to bring us more water. Only one other table was in there. My food was decent, my friend's not so much, but the service was horrible. Wouldn't recommend this place. We both got the pho with rounds steak and brisket and a spring roll. Not a ton of non-tripe options on the menu. I also didn't see pork options either. Spring roll was perfect- crispy, plump, cold, refreshing tasty fresh ingredients. The dipping sauce was a peanut-y hoisin like sauce, a bit too thick but tasty. Pho was pretty standard goodness. Broth was a but thin but the addition of sriracha and some plum sauce brought it to my favored flavor profile. I would return if in the area. read more

I happened to go here on a weeknight, so there was only one other couple in the restaurant. It was nice and quiet, but not too quiet. The news was playing on a wall-mount tv which was kind of nice for some background noise. Not long after I sat down, the chef came out and introduced herself- she was new, a Thailand native, and had recently made a lot of Thai additions to the menu. I'm not familiar with a lot of Thai dishes, but she was happy to describe all of them to me when I asked. The menu was up on a whiteboard near the cash register, and one of my only complaints about the restaurant. It was handwritten and somewhat hard to read, but it also just had the names of dishes and no descriptions. It's just a personal preference, but I like to have a description rather than just the name of a dish so I know what I'm ordering. I also prefer individual menus opposed to one menu for the whole restaurant---it's just easier to read in my opinion. I ended up ordering some spring rolls and the Thai curry soup. When you order the soup, you have the choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or any combination of those three. I had chicken and beef but no shrimp. I ordered two meats because I had read another Yelp review that said the restaurant skimped on the meat, but that definitely wasn't the case for my order! Everything came out really quickly, maybe ten minutes, tops. The spring rolls were good; I liked that they were homemade and not just the frozen kind that the restaurant warmed up in the oven for a few minutes. The Thai curry soup, though, was outstanding. It was pretty spicy, perfect in my opinion---enough to make my nose start to run, but not so spicy that my eyelids were sweating and my tongue was numb :p The bowl was huge. Pho Tran (formerly Pho 98) is so much better now that it's under new management. I decided to give it another try after I noticed it was under new ownership..and they did not disappoint. My girlfriend and I went on December 5. The food itself wasn't bad, we both ordered pho. We asked if we could substitute the noodles for egg noodles. The waitress acted like that was fine and went to place our order. Next thing you know the chef comes out and makes this whole deal about egg noodles and how they don't do egg noodles for pho..... which was fine, it wasn't a make or break deal and we both said that's fine we just figured we'd ask. His response "I'll make an exception this time but it won't happen again". I'm not sure if we were supposed to feel appreciative or what but he had an attitude about it. We simply asked if it was an option, wasn't the worst thing if it didn't happen, but the attitude wasn't necessary. If egg noodles were an option, they'd still have our business. New name is Pho Tran. (I am not related...lol). Very friendly management and staff. Service was quick and food was good. The broth from the pho was excellent - very authentic and good flavor. I have tried many many before and this is truly better than any other in the Baltimore area. Food prices are reasonable also for this area. I was driving down to MD for a visit to a friend of mine that moved down to MD a couple months ago for school. He found this Vietnamese restaurant close by called Pho 98. First of all, I was pleased with the service they provided. Then the broth that they had was awesome. I mean compared to the ones in NY, their broth was way more natural than anything I tried back at the city. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all of my friends. Horrible service, barely any meat in the pho along with over cooked noodles. Had to ask for standard side veggies and was given a single, wilted sprig of basil. When paying, cashier had to go next door to five below and purchase a monster energy drink to get my change. Never coming back. read more

This week was my first time trying Pho 98. I was a bit skeptical based on some of the reviews. But I have to say it was excellent! I had none of the issues of some other reviewers. The service was spot-on, with water and refills at the ready, the pho came with the plate of basil/bean sprouts/peppers and lime. The pho broth was deliciously rich and beefy, not at all overly salted. We also got the summer rolls for an appetizer and they were perfectly rolled and seasoned. The entrees of ginger chicken and lemon grass beef were wonderful. I honestly have nothing bad to say about the place. Great job to the owners if the bad reviews caused them to fix issues because it was great! read more

Yelp reviews on this place are for the majority pretty accurate in my opinion. The pho here is always fresh, hot and made hot. Tonight we ordered the summer rolls with peanut sauce, the vegetable pho and the shrimp and bell peppers. The summer rolls are always our favorite, served with an awesome peanut sauce and very aesthetically appealing. The vegetable pho was hot and flavorful, a good staple entree I've enjoyed here before as well. My wife chose the shrimp and peppers which was very fresh and a generous portion of shrimp. I think what made the dish stand above the rest was the sauce which was a bit sweet but definitely barbeque inspired. It was really very good. The problem with Pho 98 is the service, mainly the waitresses. There's really not much etiquette or customer service whatsoever from having to request water, asking for napkins, to-go boxes and even the check more than once only to be directed to the sign saying "Pay up front". All in all, if you're able to wait for really good food and bear through the terrible wait staff this place really is a little hidden gem. I will not return! After a long wait to for the waitress to take my order, I went to the front desk to place my order since I thought I was forgotten. The owner roughly told me to have a seat. After finally placing my order there was a long wait for the food. When the food came to the table it was the wrong order, chicken instead of beef. The owner didn't want to take it back and said that chicken is better than beef anyway. After the back and forth I said I would go ahead and taste the chicken. When I told the waitress that I didn't like the chicken. She told me that she explained to the owner that I did in fact order beef. He proceeded to look at my plate and announced to everyone that I ate half of the meal. He told me that the most he would do is take $3.00 off my meal. I payed but couldn't believe that I would be charged for their mistake. Horrible customer service!!! This restaurant deserves no stars but it didn't allow me to post this without a star. read more

Service and food both proved to be very disappointing. The waitress was not versed well enough in English to communicate my questions about the menu. The broth to the soup I ordered tasted "artificial." Both my soup and my boyfriends noodle dish contained little meat. The beef briscuit in my soup had fat on it. I've eaten at many pho restaurants and have never received soup with fatty meat. No refills were offered or brought to our table during our dining experience. Seen it many times when shopping at Shoprite, never been in before today but decided I really wanted a Pho and to give it a try; first impression wasn't great - I went in around 7:45 and there wasn't a single customer there!! Ordered the beef Pho (I think it was no. 9...the regular beef stuff...) and then the owner talked me into getting a starter - I chose the Summer rolls (side note for the other reviewer: it's NOT a Summer Spring roll!! That does not make sense!!) Anyway, went to pick up some cold beer at the liquor store and food was ready when I came back. I REALLY enjoyed the food!! The Pho was a nice big portion, consisting of three separate containers: one for the broth, one for the noodles and beef and one for the sprouts, peppers, basil and lime. Yes, it could have been a bit more beef and yes, the noodles were basically all in a big clump, but overall it was very yummy indeed - and the broth was flavorful, which is the most important part for me. The Summer rolls were also very good, very light - just delicious!!! I would most certainly get both items again - and I surely will, provided the place stays open....Prices were very reasonable - i paid just under $13 total. read more

This place is a JOKE! 10 minutes into my meal, I got up to use the restroom. I was gone all of 2 min . When I exit the bathroom I find that my table has been cleared and my dinner is in the TRASH!! At that point I just walked out, I'm not a big "complainer", when I've had bad restaurant experiences in the past ( We'll call it the Pre-Pho98 period of my life), I was never moved to take to a review site. I would warn my friends and family and let the rest of humanity form their own opinion. I respect that this restaurant is someone's livelihood. I'm a big pho fan so I thought I would give this place a shot. I wont waste a lot of time on the summer rolls, It's all been said. They each fell apart after one bite, and tasted like what they were (95% rice paper/noodle, 5% veggies). And the pho ( that I got to eat) was bottom rung, and packed with msg goodness( Msg is used in the food industry(by lazy "chefs" to remove the yummy aluminum can flavor) I was going to give them 0 stars, but in hind site they did me a favor by throwing away my meal! read more
