I see in the reviews that the vermicelli bowls are good here too, and the pho is a hit and miss - in general, if you're searching for Vietnamese food, this place might not be the holy grail. But the banh mi is at bar none - because compared to other ones in town, I'm hard pressed to find any that uses better bread than this place does. And the rest is executed flawlessly. Came here for lunch and was quickly seated. I ordered small pho w/ meatballs. The noodle portion was a lot. Flavor was standard. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I did notice the condiments bottles for the last ho needs to be wiped down. You can tell when the sauce is cakey around the spout and residue on the side of the bottle. read more

Surprising that we don't have a review of Pho Van since we've been here twice before (though many years before, probably before we started Yelping). We came here on a whim tonight since we were up north anyway and it was cold and rainy and why the hell not. Wellllllll, we'll tell you why: it's just plain OK. The place is dinky but not in a charming way, and it was really drafty and chilly, so not much an improvement from outside. Our daughter's kid's chicken pho was a bowl of 80% noodles, 10% broth, and 10% chicken. Don't get us wrong, she was happy, but still. The beef pho with round steak (add broccoli) had a murky broth, but it wasn't too bad. A bit more flavor would have gone a long way, but it's par for the course B-level pho. The vermicelli bowl with shrimp and beef was about the same. So, all in all, it's the same meal that you could have at a similar such place so there's not much you'd be missing if you didn't come. We think a good chunk of their business must come from people who give up waiting on the Tatsu-ya line. Three stars, no need to return, but we wish them well. read more

The pho here was disappointing to say the least. I ordered a large bowl of brisket pho, and there were only maybe 5 measly strips of brisket (and that's being generous). The toppings were extremely lacking as well, and the broth was watered down. I felt like I was just eating a big bowl with just noodles and water. I just discovered this spot for pho over the summer, and since finding it, I go most times I am in the area, near the Target. Parking is easy, and the meat-free pho I order is delicious and so hot. The fixings are plenty and super fresh. I would love to have this right now! I tried the veggie dumplings and they were not anything I would ever order again. I will stick to the pho. The small bowl is huge, and I always take some home with me. The price is right for the portion. The staff is very nice, and I am always happy to see that those-who-are-probably-the-owners, acknowledge me, whether they are waiting on me or not - I like to think it is because I am now a "regular". I make it a point to tip generously in cash, and I go fairly often, because I want these owners to thrive in their business. I would rate this as 4.5 stars, but rounding up instead of down, because this is a solid place to go. Would like to see soy sauce on the table, and I always have to ask for a to-go container for my half-full bowl, so I would appreciate either a place to get that for myself, or for someone to check on me once I have stopped eating. In most places, you are typically brought the check, and that is when you'd ask; but since they keep your check at the counter, you will need to flag someone down. That is a bit annoying, but not by any means a deal breaker. Next time, I am going to ask for the to-go container at the time I order, so I am not left waiting to get it once I am done eating. read more

I don't know what it is but the fried egg rolls here are delicious! Try the broken rice with beef or chicken with lemongrass - I've been to many Vietnamese restaurants but most don't do the broken rice so this place is a great place to try it! They also have some really good milkshakes here - I was brave enough to try the Durian milkshake and was not disappointed! Also it didn't smell bad or anything like that - I think it's the raw fruit that has the smell that everyone always talks about in either case it was sweet and addictive. However, Pho Van is so far the most authentic Vietnamese restaurants I have tried in Austin. It is not the cleanest nor the most friendly pho restaurant you will find. But, the quality of the food made it worth the try! I got a Vermicelli with Grilled Pork and Egg roll (V6) and Fresh Spring Rolls with Grilled Pork (A1). The food came out quickly, even though we had a big group (about 8 people). The portion size was just right for the price and the presentation of the vermicelli was very pretty. Rainy days make me crave pho. I'm still on my search for finding my local pho joint, but pho van unfortunately doesn't cut it for me. As a pescatarian, I'm pretty much confined to two noodle choices--seafood pho (soupy) or shrimp vermicelli (dry). I was in the mood for something soupy and full of seafood, so I went with a small seafood pho. I saw that their menu also had "rice noodle soup with seafood" as an option, but pho is pho...so I went with that choice. I wonder how different the two are. The pho came out under 10 minutes, and the three of our bowls came together. I definitely could have eaten the large size of pho, but I'm a noodle lover like no other. I was disappointed that the seafood quantity was like 5% compared to the rest of the bowl. The noodles were cooked to chewy greatness, but the pho broth itself was just average. I've had some fantastic pho where I found myself slurping spoonfuls of love and satisfaction into my tummy, but pho van fell short. Service is to the point and fast, your typical no ambiance and zero background music (cracks me up) pho spot. We had the older woman taking our orders, and she starts with the "separate or together" to get the bill stuff out of the way. I love that--reminds me of home. They accept card, which is cool too. I would have preferred a more robust chicken broth. The chicken was tender, and the plate of aromatics was fresh and in fine fettle. The only thing that detracted from dinner here this visit - was at two separate tables - with small children - intermittently screaming and crying. Service is amazing here. It was semi packed on a Sunday evening, we were quickly seated. Food comes out fairly quickly, probably about 10 minutes after you order and we ordered a lot. We got shrimp pho and beef broth pho, steamed dumplings and pork banh mi (sandwich). Pho was hot, good portion of rice noodles and meats! Steamed dumplings were good! Pork banh mi was delicious! A seriously underrated gem here in Austin! While I consistently lament about the lack of good Vietnamese food (specifically pho) in Austin, Pho Van helps calm those (somewhat irrational) fears. While a lot of places can excel in one component of the dish (broth, noodles, meat) and let others fall by the wayside. Pho Van excels in all three, especially in the fresh, springy noodle texture. A lot of places use overcooked noodles, but not here! My only nitpicking is with the spring rolls. I am an obsessive fan of them and was a little bit let down to see that they were mainly filler (romain lettuce and bean sprouts) rather than the herby and fragrant flavor I'm used to. Even their chicken pho, which normally falls by the wayside at most places, is incredibly rich and flavorful with cinnamony/star anise flavors. Definitely worth a trip up north! read more

As soon as we sat down, we got our drinks order taken and immediately after I was putting in my order. They didn't have the combination of Brisket and Meatballs on the menu, I asked the server if I could order that and he said of course. It was busy so I knew it would be a minute for my order to come out. As soon as the placed my bowl on the table, first thing I do is take a whiff of that broth. I honestly think this is probably one of the worst pho places I've been to in Austin. From the eggrolls to the pho, I was not a fan. The eggrolls are not like the ones that you find at every other pho shop. The filling is slightly different, but that makes all the difference taste-wise. The pho was probably the worst part. Order take out. The food is great. Their service is awful and for no reason. I could understand if they were super busy or had a ton of to go orders. That was absolutely not the case. We couldn't get anyone to come back to the table. Our presence was not appreciated. There were only like 4 people other than us in the whole place, and everyone had already ordered. He wasn't slammed. He just didn't care. The kid either stayed in the back or sat rolling silverware or something, only looking down. I kept trying to get his attention from the time they dropped off our food, but every time he looked up or came to another table, even one next to us, I kept waving and "saying excuse me sir", trying not to yell I'm an empty restaurant, and was invisible. Every time I would start to get up and try to ask him for something he would walk into the back. After a while I literally had to stand up and wave my arms as he walked out of the kitchen so he would acknowledge me. At that point I just wanted to go bowls so we could pay and leave. We never even got water refills. When I asked for the bill he just told me to go to the front. How am I supposed to know that if the food gets dropped off and up I never comes back to check on us? Cm tấm is my husband's favorite Vietnamese comfort food and although it is quite rustic and simple, it's actually a good dish to evaluate the quality of the cook. The one we ordered was very good, the best one we had in Austin so far. And we've been to a lot of them. An awesome authentic restaurant run by Singaporeans! All I have to say is the bread here is absolutely nuts. Whatever they do or use for their bread used for their sandwiches is enough in itself. Stopped by lunch today with a full table of 5 and received prompt, quick, and accurate service. We ordered a plethora of food to include: Beef soup Tofu Bánh mì sandwhich Shrimp Bánh mì Wonton soup (holy ****!) The food was great, and very hearty. The wonton soup here is the best I have ever had and it alone makes a return customer. I'd recommend this spot to anyone looking for a legit Bánh mì sandwhich and/or a nice filling wholesome soup (since their broth is on 10).
