She didn't say that an 18% tip is the minimum for mediocre service. I don't mind tipping, but it was extremely sleazy to sneak in a tip without my consent. The waitress did not refill our water once and had an attitude the entire time. Pho Vietnam's food isn't cheap either. A banh xeo is $20, pho ap chao is $18, and summer rolls are $11. One of the best Vietnamese restaurants we've ever eaten at. So good we came here 3 times in a week during our stay in Hawaii. I absolutely love their tray of special combo (bbq pork/beef/chicken & grilled shrimp/pork paste) where not many places have and their Vietnamese egg crepe. I think those dishes were probably the best I've ever had. My husband loves their version of the Hainanese chicken with rice and he said their beef pho was also really good & flavorful. Everything we had here was delicious- the appetizers, entrees, & noodles as well as the drinks. The staff were very friendly, food came out relatively quick, and prices were reasonable. Got the pho. Honestly no clue how it tasted b/c I added so much hot sauce. I just got tendon, no noodles. Put in choke veggies...everything nice and fresh. Hubs got the crepe. That was HUUUUGE. I've ordered take out from here before, and the food was yummy and so I decided to go in person today with myself and my infant son. When we got there, it took me probably 20 minutes (generously) to be seated. I watched people get seated before me, and asked three separate people if they could seat me and each time I was quickly dismissed and then ignored. I was in fact never seated, but a couple who had an extra seat at their table invited me to sit with them because they had been watching me struggle with a car seat and get ignored. Each time I interacted with a server, it's because I got up to ask a question or waved them down. This includes: ordering, getting a water, and asking for a fork. I'm a really easy going person and I don't really ever leave bad reviews. It took me an hour after entering the building to get my food though. I do recognize that they may have been busier because it was a Sunday night, and I do have sympathy for that. I do not understand though how I could be practically begging for a seat and be ignored, while other people are being sat immediately upon entry. They also were moving people who were already sitting to combine them with other people which I found odd also. After an hour of waiting with a small baby, when I finally got my food it was good. But unfortunately, my experience left a stronger taste in my mouth than the food. Very rushed and bad service. If you order from here, do yourself a favor and just order takeout. read more

I chose the rare steak and had them put the meat inside the pho, instead of on the plate since I wanted well-done. I got the small order and the portion was generous size. Seating was quick. Like many places I've passed by for years but hadn't tried, I finally came in for dinner and first of all: I look forward to returning bc it's one of those places where you order and then take look around and see so many other dishes that look great and interesting so... can't wait to go back. I ordered my go to Bun Ba Hue (sp) but usually listed on menus as Spicy Beef Soup, which doesn't do the dish justice. This soup is an adventure, the broth is savory and spicy and rich, and various noodle styles can be used, this place uses my favorite style for this soup, thicker round almost like Okinawan noodles rather than thinner clear vermicelli, anyway, there are 5 or 6 different types of protein including flank steak sliced thin, tender tendon, pig knuckles, blood paste, and more. That's part of the fun, digging in and discovering the different amazing flavors and textures. You can load it up like pho with shredded banana flower, bean spouts, mint, fresh lemon and sliced jalapeños. Literally after the first time I tried this soup maybe a dozen years ago, I have not ordered or eaten pho because this hits the same spot but so much more interesting /satisfying. The ladies in the restaurant were talking for a long time before they brought us any water or bring us menus. Yes, I'm the person that treated friends. Though the food was good, the service was absolutely terrible. Not welcoming at all unless you know them personally. They walked past a couple times, not once did they asked if we wanted water. Also, I remembered our total was roughly around $51 and I tipped $2. I woke up, checked my bank statement and saw $62. This place is happening. They open 9am to 9pm everyday and the workers are super friendly and always on it. Even when it is super busy they are constantly checking to ensure everyone is served. You also know you are in the right place when there are lots of Vietnamese patrons too! Their menu is pretty broad - with the normally expected items like Pho and Banh Mi, to the more authentic items like Bun Bo Hue and Simmered Catfish. We tried their Hainanese Chicken Rice, Pho Bo, Bun Bo Hue, Spring Rolls and Beef Stew over several visits both in the morning and evenings. It was all good and the portions were also very generous. Though I have to say that the Bun Bo Hue from Pho Time is better! The only thing that is a bit tricky eating here is the parking. There's street parking but it's normally full near the restaurant as there are several eateries in competition but one can still find parking in the many pay parking lots and municipal garages. In the end it's Chinatown that most folks are worried about when visiting. The streets aren't that clean and there is the chance of meeting vagrants. After my first visit to Pho Viet Nam, I knew I had to come back--and I'm so glad I did! This place continues to impress with its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Everything is still a solid 10/10. This time, we enjoyed the Lau Cua Dong , and they were just as delicious as before. The staff here are wonderful--friendly, helpful, and always listening to their customers. Our waiter, provided excellent service and made us feel right at home. Although I'm sad to be leaving Hawaii and heading back to my hometown tomorrow morning, I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Pho Viet Nam. After a long day doing errands and dealing with dreary weather, my BF and I decided to get pho for dinner. I avoid Vietnamese restaurants a lot because I'm biased towards my mom's cooking. We were seated quickly and I noticed the employees could speak both Chinese and Vietnamese. The menu was expansive and offered various traditional Vietnamese dishes. My BF ordered the pho with rare beef and I ordered the bun rieu. My first choice, bun bo hue, was sold out. The food came quickly with a side dish of fresh herbs. I was very happy with my bun rieu. It was savory, rich in flavor, and had a strong crab meat and fish sauce taste to the seafood meat balls. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the toppings were fresh and didn't taste stale. Trust me when I say pre-sliced fish balls, steamed pork sausage, and other garnishes can taste stale if they were prepared early and left out to dry. The pho was also good. Not too salty, not too sweet, and had a deep flavor to the broth. I am impressed and will be back to try their other dishes! read more

I've ordered delivery from here a few times and was always very happy with what I received but this was my first time dining in!! The restaurant is very clean and very nicely decorated! Our server was super attentive and took our order promptly. Our food was SO good and everything came out in a timely manner and correctly. The portion sizes are so worth it for the price too. They're pretty big! Keep in mind it is in Chinatown so parking is a little difficult but not impossible and so worth it for this food. My only complaint is how COLD it is. They had fans and AC, thank goodness the fans weren't on because it was COLD in there!! We ate and immediately needed to leave because we were pretty chilly in there. Despite this, we waited an unacceptable 30 minutes just to place our order.
