Like many places I've passed by for years but hadn't tried, I finally came in for dinner and first of all: I look forward to returning bc it's one of those places where you order and then take look around and see so many other dishes that look great and interesting so... can't wait to go back. I ordered my go to Bun Ba Hue (sp) but usually listed on menus as Spicy Beef Soup, which doesn't do the dish justice. This soup is an adventure, the broth is savory and spicy and rich, and various noodle styles can be used, this place uses my favorite style for this soup, thicker round almost like Okinawan noodles rather than thinner clear vermicelli, anyway, there are 5 or 6 different types of protein including flank steak sliced thin, tender tendon, pig knuckles, blood paste, and more. That's part of the fun, digging in and discovering the different amazing flavors and textures. You can load it up like pho with shredded banana flower, bean spouts, mint, fresh lemon and sliced jalapeños. Literally after the first time I tried this soup maybe a dozen years ago, I have not ordered or eaten pho because this hits the same spot but so much more interesting /satisfying. The ladies in the restaurant were talking for a long time before they brought us any water or bring us menus. This place is happening. They open 9am to 9pm everyday and the workers are super friendly and always on it. Even when it is super busy they are constantly checking to ensure everyone is served. You also know you are in the right place when there are lots of Vietnamese patrons too! Their menu is pretty broad - with the normally expected items like Pho and Banh Mi, to the more authentic items like Bun Bo Hue and Simmered Catfish. We tried their Hainanese Chicken Rice, Pho Bo, Bun Bo Hue, Spring Rolls and Beef Stew over several visits both in the morning and evenings. It was all good and the portions were also very generous. Though I have to say that the Bun Bo Hue from Pho Time is better! The only thing that is a bit tricky eating here is the parking. There's street parking but it's normally full near the restaurant as there are several eateries in competition but one can still find parking in the many pay parking lots and municipal garages. In the end it's Chinatown that most folks are worried about when visiting. The streets aren't that clean and there is the chance of meeting vagrants. I've had their beef pho before and it's okay. This time, I ordered the chicken pho, expecting a comforting bowl of flavorful broth and tender chicken, but it missed the mark on every level. The broth--usually the heart of a good pho--was a strange letdown. It was beef broth and had a hint of soy sauce? The noodles were soggy and overcooked, making the texture unappealing. After my first visit to Pho Viet Nam, I knew I had to come back--and I'm so glad I did! This place continues to impress with its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Everything is still a solid 10/10. This time, we enjoyed the Lau Cua Dong , and they were just as delicious as before. The staff here are wonderful--friendly, helpful, and always listening to their customers. Our waiter, provided excellent service and made us feel right at home. Although I'm sad to be leaving Hawaii and heading back to my hometown tomorrow morning, I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Pho Viet Nam. After a long day doing errands and dealing with dreary weather, my BF and I decided to get pho for dinner. I avoid Vietnamese restaurants a lot because I'm biased towards my mom's cooking. We were coming back from Aiea and decided to cut through downtown to try Pho Vietnam as I wasn't interested in going to our usual spots. My mom and sister had recommended Pho Vietnam in the past but I've been avoidant due to the location being in downtown. Anyways, we park on a side street and enter Pho Vietnam which was clean, spacious, and had traditional Vietnamese music playing. We were seated quickly and I noticed the employees could speak both Chinese and Vietnamese. The menu was expansive and offered various traditional Vietnamese dishes. My BF ordered the pho with rare beef and I ordered the bun rieu. My first choice, bun bo hue, was sold out. The food came quickly with a side dish of fresh herbs. I was very happy with my bun rieu. It was savory, rich in flavor, and had a strong crab meat and fish sauce taste to the seafood meat balls. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the toppings were fresh and didn't taste stale. Trust me when I say pre-sliced fish balls, steamed pork sausage, and other garnishes can taste stale if they were prepared early and left out to dry. The pho was also good. Despite this, we waited an unacceptable 30 minutes just to place our order. Our server was super attentive and took our order promptly. Our food was SO good and everything came out in a timely manner and correctly. The portion sizes are so worth it for the price too. I have been SLEEPING on this place for the last seven years. A few weeks ago, I was craving pho so I ordered the vegetable/tofu pho on doordash and went to pick up. While I was there, I also got a bottle of soybean milk. WHOA. The soybean milk was amazing. They make it in house. I also noticed that they have a whole vegan/vegetarian menu. Strangely I went to this pho location years ago while working in downtown. It was rather decent but lacking in sanitation and flavor sometimes. To my dismay it was renovated and new owners have taken on this business! The menu is quite extensive and the place is pretty clean and still big! Being a Sunday it wasn't too busy but I also went before dinner hour. I chose flank and brisket (my regular go to fist time trying a pho place). The flank was nice and had a few pieces of a little fattier pieces of meat. The brisket had that hard gristle that I absolutely cannot swallow. I took all the pieces out and had to waste them. It was a shame. I must add that the flavors were good. It's not too salty nor too sweet and the fresh vegetables were so flavorful!! I could taste every fresh herb they gave us and the ones inside!! The Thai tea was less than in flavor. I think they are coconut milk so it takes away from that woodchip flavor that Thai tea usually tastes like. Summer rolls were decent but the skin of the summer roll has that cheese smell to it. I don't know if you know or can smell it but I really think it's the type of roll they use. It's been in other Vietnamese restaurants too. That's one scent I don't care for. The pho had good flavor and I could choose between medium and large which I appreciated. The prices are decent but the location is eh, Chinatown. Just go when the sun is out! Their phone has an annoying ringtone and was loud. I'm glad to hear they had tons and I mean TONS of take out orders. At one point the owner was getting irritated with all the phone calls.
