So I have tried about 5 pho restaurants in seattle and i am from san jose where the vietnamese/pho is the best in the world yes i said world. All seattle vietnamese pho places are really bad. This place is the best so far i have tried and compared to the pho i am used to, i would rate it 3 at best. Only reason i rated 4, just cuz of pho standards here are so low. I have been here 2 times. Both times the pho broth is consistent, the flavor is good but still a little bland compared to what i am used to. First time got a small pho tai $7.25, and it is pretty standard small size and they give you a good portion of meat. I also ordered the fresh springrolls, which i could tell it has been siting in the fridge for a while cuz it was super cold and the rice paper was a little thicker than usual. Disappointed that they served the springrolls at the same time as the pho. The peanut sauce they used was not peanut sauce but some sort of watery soy sauce based with pieces of peanuts in it. I did not like it. Never seen this type of sauce used before. Second time got a large pho tai $8.15, and boy the size difference from small to large is huge. Btw they dont have a regular size. Same as before, they give you lots of meat. This time i ordered the eggrolls, they served this after i finished the pho. Nothing special on the egg rolls, it was whatevers. Overall for the price and location, this is actually a place i would go often since its pretty close to where i live. I am still waiting to find a legit pho place in seattle. read more

I'm so excited about this place. Let me explain. I've been on a hunt for decent pho in the Ballard area. Unfortunately all the restaurants in the core historic Ballard neighborhood area is a huge disappointment (in delicious food land of all places). The pho broths are either bland or way too sweet! And I haven't added the hoisin sauce yet. Is that just the preference by patrons out here? Anyway, the further out from the Ballard core the better the pho quality/taste is. I give this place 4 stars compared to the other 4-5 restaurants I've tried. However, expect service and ambience to be at par to the a typical pho restaurant. read more

Great little neighborhood pho spot, particularly given that this part of Ballard is otherwise rather lacking in spots to get good Asian food. I'm afraid my taste for pho is not terribly sophisticated; I always order veggie pho, and I can't tell superior veggie pho broth from excellent veggie pho broth from pretty good veggie pho broth...I can only tell "good" broth from "bad" broth, so take my counsel with the proverbial grain of salt. That said, Pho Vietnam definitely has "good" broth...earthy with a sweetness that mellows well with a bit of hoisin sauce, lime and sriracha. The sign in front of the store says "PHO" in colossal letters, so on my most recent visit, I came walking down the street, looking at the word "PHO," but somehow I got fixated on the "O," so then, when I went in and ordered a veggie pho, I pronounced it wrong, with a long "O," as in, rhymes with "Whoa!" or "Oh no!" or "WTF, bro?" I am, and forever shall be, a dork. Oh well...the woman at the counter didn't even bat an eye, which was quite gracious of her. After ordering, I barely had a chance to sit down before WHAMMO, my order was ready. I mean, it practically arrived on a bolt of lightning. Granted it was the pre-dinner rush, but still, I was amazed, pleasantly, at how quickly it arrived. Pho Vietnam's veggie pho has a generous fill of many of the typical goodies: perfectly fried bite-sized slices of tofu, plenty of noodles, green onions, a bit of broccoli, and a few carrots...I'm never a fan of too many carrots and thankfully they don't overdo it here. We lived really close and have always loved the food here, but after covid we primarily cook at home until recently we started ordering take out here and there. We ordered a few dishes a few days ago and upon pickup we noticed the folks in the kitchen prepping the food didn't have masks on at all - and we made eye contact too. The nice old man that handled front desk and cashier mainly also did not wear his mask correctly and his nose was completely exposed. I hope it's not an one-off but for now I don't think we would order again until covid is over. read more

This place is rock solid. It's on a busy uphill stretch of 15th and looks like it probably always has a crowd as a result. It's in a somewhat older building with tilt-out windows they probably have to leave open any time they're working; the kitchen probably swelters. You walk in kind of in the middle; there are two doors but one leads to the kitchen. There are a couple of tables and then a divider mini-wall with a bigger dining room on the other side. It's clean and bright, and there are menus under the glass tabletops. Service is quick, and the pho comes out fast. The broth is pleasant and mild, and the ingredients are in good shape. Condiments could be a bit fresher, and there could be a little more of them. But the flank was clearly never frozen, which is a plus. Flavors are good throughout, and prices were fair. Overall, there's nothing nudging this place up or down in terms of quality or value. They deliver across the board, but without pushing into extraordinary territory anywhere. What do you get when you cross good food and a big health department no-no? One star. I wanted to try the pho here the night of Yelp Prom but for some reason they weren't open. So I popped in this Monday to give them a shot for lunch. The pho was good, so much like Than Brothers that it had me wondering what came first. The cream puff was different than Than, I prefer the latter, but this one wasn't half bad. The kicker - I went to pay and the nice old lady hand rolling spring rolls got up and helped me. After giving me, and the people behind me our change, she went right back to hand rolling the spring rolls...no gloves...no handwashing. YUCK! I felt like I'd just licked a dollar by eating there. Vietnam is always my favorite pho place, especially in Winter time. I ordered a small No. 14 with extra meat and one order of fried eggrolls. I find that this is the best combination. Everyone eats pho differently. But, this is how I like my pho: 1) extra lime 2) a lot of hot sauce 3) leave the soup last to finish. The fried eggrolls came with some kinda fish sauce with chopped carrots in. I bite off a little of my rolls and let it soak in the sauce for a few seconds before I eat. read more

This is one of my favorite pho spots in Seattle. Their pho has a lot of flavor, large portions and cheap. My go to is a small #15 (combo) with an extra side of veggies: they give you a lot of beef, so much that I can't finish it all. For veggies, they give you broccoli and carrots which are soft and tender. Their broth is so flavorful and not fatty that I feel that you don't need to douse it with hoisin sauce. I love this place because it's an easy walk from home, but also the broth is pretty good and the portions are good, too (but not excessive). There is a bit of variability in quality, but I've seldom had a bad bowl of pho here. Service is fast; step in, give them a wave, and seat yourself--you'll put your order in and get your food in two shakes. That said, they advertise free cream puffs, and it feels like they have them significantly less often than days where they don't. Also, the dine in service ends at 7:30, but I've seen people beg and get turned away at 7:15. I hope this place never goes away, even if they're a local joint and they act like it... Since moving to the North Seattle area, I haven't been able to find good pho. The places on Aurora seem a little sketchy and I'm hesitant to try any of those just yet. My friend took me to Pho Vietnam after a night of drinking. And you know what they say about pho. It IS the best hangover cure, no joke! But seriously, sometimes I can't quite taste the difference between pho broths, but I can usually determine whether or not it's good if I finish the broth. Today I definitely finished most of the broth of my #2 with extra meatballs. I always add a bunch of bean sprouts and I dab my meat in the oyster sauce instead of pouring the sauce directly into the bowl. But anyway, the broth was sooo tasty, I don't know, maybe I was thirsty but it was some darn good pho. I can't forget to mention the creampuffs too, they were very soft and the cream inside was quite tasty! I liked this place a lot! read more

Here's how I'm breaking this one down: Food, 4. Service, 3.5. Cleanliness of the bathroom, 0. The service was, in a word, fine. Order was taken quickly enough, food brought with a smile. No checking on me at any point, no check brought to the table. No big deal but nothing to rave about. The food was pretty good, i got a small bowl of the basic chicken soup with extra meat and it was plenty of food to fill this hungry girl. Some of the chicken was a wee bit on the chewy side but in general it was on par with other pho places. All was just fine, but then I popped into the restroom. I was repulsed. it literally looked like they had not cleaned the bathroom in years. The walls were dirty, the floor was dirty, the sink and countertop were filthy. And of course the toilet itself was nasty. If I didn't have a long drive ahead of me, I would have skipped using their bathroom and gone to a gas station, it was that bad. so if you want decent food and have a large bladder, it would be a good place to get your fill of pho read more

Second day in a row that something has woke me up wanting PHO'...that being said. I went and had lunch there again in as many days. Spring rolls with a plum peanut sauce and Tra CUC. I'm not an aficionado, but as A. Bourdain says, "If my last meal were to be this...just give me a bowl of something good." "This is it." Pho: 4/5 Service: 2/5 Cleanliness: 0/5 This restaurant as the name suggest serves only Pho. They have egg rolls, spring rolls, and other appetizers, but no other rice/noodle entrees. I ordered the #15 pho with all the meats, and added extra tendon for an additional $2 charge. The flavor of the soup was spot on, but it seemed like they went cheap on the tendon and there were only a mere 4 small pieces despite paying for extra tendon. Service overall was below average. Asked for water and hot tea for three, but was only given a very small pot of tea. They seemed to be cheap on the veggie condiments too. The amount of bean sprouts, basil, jalapenos, and lime slices were only portioned for 1 person. We had to ask the waitress to bring us another plate of veggie condiments. They also ran out of their advertised "Free dessert" when we asked upon checking out. The cleanliness of this restaurant is one of the worst I've ever been into. It is a little ironic that they are rated as excellent for food safety. I get that they're an old restaurant, but maintenance seem to be a low priority for them. The chopsticks were old, discolored, and had black stains all over them. The soup spoons also had unknown particles on them. We had to pour a little hot tea into napkins and wipe the chopsticks and spoons before use. The bathroom was very dirty; yellow soap was dripping all over the toilet, sink, and floor, which looked like piss stains. The toilet looked disgusting like it hadn't been cleaned in a few months. If it wasn't for the taste of the pho, I would give this place a 1 star. There are so many pho places around the area that I won't ever be going back here again. read more

First thing's first. I AM VIETNAMESE. I have eaten pho since I could eat solid food. I know the difference between bad pho, good pho, and really good pho. This establishment falls into the later. Thank god. (FYI I'll use Pho Than Brothers as a benchmark for y'all, which is GOOD pho) The tai (rare steak) beef her is sliced to a perfect thinness and is almost buttery in it's deliciousness. The broth is superb and the noodles dont arrive to your table in one big block. Yeah, this place isn't much to look at, it's about as aesthetically pleasing as Frances McDormand, but just like that esteemed actress it always does a great job and outshines most of if not all of it's peers. Ballard doesn't have a lot of Pho restaurants. There's the obvious one that I won't call out by name and then there's the Monkey Bridge. Annie's Teriyaki sells Pho, but it ain't nothin' compared to the good stuff at Vietnam Restaurant. Now, it is cash only and it's a little (or a lot) gritty around the edges, but the Pho here is exceptional and the woman who is one of the owners is very sweet and almost always smiling. I always get a small veggie, which is more than enough, with big hunks of fried tofu and a broth that's far tastier than the stuff at 'that other place.' It's never overly crowded in here and they'll happily take your orders over the phone. There's always a lot of newspapers laying around here too on the tables when you walk in, which makes for a nice way to wait for your 'to go' Pho. read more

I needed Pho like I needed a hole in my head, which is desperately, because my skull is like solid bone, man. I was hungry. My friend had just gotten finished telling me about how she doesn't eat dinner anymore, but that didn't stop me from dragging her here to watch me eat. I SHOULD feel bad about that, but I don't. She makes for good company. And she was easily convinced to eat a spring roll. It seemed unusually quiet in here. We came in here laughing and talking loudly, and immediately shushed each other. Every time we giggled loudly we looked around for Conan the Librarian to come skewer us with a bookmark. There were several other diners in here, but they were seriously into their food. Or were meditating, I dunno. I'm a fan of eating noodles, not having them stick to my elbow. Or my friend's elbow. We would have been a lot happier if the table was a little cleaner. On the other hand, a series of noodle-elbow demonstrations had us laughing and shushing each other all over again. We shared the complimentary cream puff. She asked me, "why did we get that?" I shrugged. I'm not one to question the whys and hows of receiving a cream puff. When the universe deigns to give you a cream puff, you accept. I think it was complimentary. Or it was our server's method of keeping us quiet by having us stuff our faces before our spring roll got there. It got there, rather quickly. It was really good, too. I forgot about the noodle-elbow. The pho was good. I wish I had gotten a napkin, though. On the other hand, it forced me to be very tidy, which is a good thing when you're out with someone you'd like to impress with clean habits. Usually when I eat pho on my own, I wind up with a small puddle around my bowl. We sat and waited for the check, and finally gave up and headed up front. I'm pretty sure we could have just walked right on out the door and no one would have noticed. Note: if you park behind this place, be careful to let the owner know you're a customer. His parking lot is a dictatorship, and he's the dic. He'll have your car towed within minutes of parking unless you show up inside. If I'm not near enough to Pho Bac in the I.D., Vietnam Restaurant will always be my first runner up for pho. I'm not a publicist for pho establishments, but unless you speak Vietnamese, do not count on ordering your food like Meg Ryan from When Harry Met Sally. Keep it simple, if you have requests, make them when you're actually dining in (slowly), OR check your take-out order in the establishment. Moving on... I usually go with the #6: brisket and well done flank which is delish. Their tofu pho is solid too with ample amounts of broccoli. The chicken pho is meh, way too dry for my taste, so I'd stay away from that. I'm a big fan of their broth, rich flavors, no star anise BS, no msg, not too sweet, no ice rink of fat when my soup sits in the fridge. Just a smidge of hoisin sauce to make it even better. (I should just drop my microphone like Dave Chappelle son). Their take out takes less than 5 min. They pack up the noodles, meat, broth, and condiments in separate containers so the 50 cents they charge is no biggie in my book. Oh and you kids with the slammed Acuras, watch the sharp incline to get to their parking lot in the back. It looks subtle but not so much when you can hear the undercarriage getting assaulted. P.S. Pretty decent pho. Cash only and their parking lot is up high on the curb so you bottom out unless you're driving a monster truck. It does not matter how slow you go, just park on the street. My sister likes their veggie pho the best and it's filled with...duh, lots of veggies/tofu, and a broth that is lighter than its meat counterpart, which is a good indicator that it's truly veggie. Sometimes you just have to suspect that they use the same meat-based broth but throw in veg to call it veggie, not here though. I ordered a small (medium is a size skipped on the menu, goes to large and extra large) #15, which I didn't read carefully..and is a more customized order. I really wanted a #14, which I believe I received. It was good, lots of variety, but I could have done for more marbled meat. Yum. It did take some time to get the order packages up to go (at extra 50c per to-go order), which was kind of annoying. But everyone was nice enough. They've been in business at least 10yrs (from the review posted under each table), so congrats to them and the proprietor reminds me of my grandfather. heh. The broth had cooled a bit from the less than 10mins drive home, but that made it easier to slurp after I added all the accompanying herbs, sprouts, and sauces (plus lots extra from my personal stash). The complimentary cream puff was meh so I didn't bother finishing it later at home. That's saying a lot because I love those things. My parents are old and retired. Forgive this enormously broad OVER-generalization but old people stick to what they know and they don't venture out. My parents are the epitomy of this. Why am I disparaging the old? I only do so to make my point about how great Vietnam Restaurant is. My parents eat at this place ALL the time. They do because they know that they are getting a great meal for under $6 bucks a person - including the awesome little FREE cream puff you get as a dessert. They know that the service is always great and the owners will greet them with a smile. And they know that the bowl of pho soup they get is always consistently hearty and full of great stuff. They stick to what they know and they know Vietnam Restaurant is worth spending just the tiniest bit of their social security check there. I can't wait until I get old. =) read more

There are two advantages of this place over most other pho places. First there is chicken pho made with chicken broth (not beef broth, unlike a lot of other places), and shredded chicken. Second there is free parking. I prefer Pho Than Brothers overall, with the exception of the chicken pho. But overall, tasty, inexpensive, and good. read more

This is pretty much my favorite pho restaurant ever. I generally get the extra-small bowl with tofu and load up on the basil, bean sprouts and other goodie garnishes and fill mah belleh with health. Vietnam Restaurant looks like a dive, one not to be trusted from the outside. OK, OK, I admit it does need a bit of a face lift on the inside and outside. But the inside is SO TASTY. The service is friendly and quick. And the pho is delicious. And the recession (complimentary) cream puffs: A little less creamy than they used to be, but a happy ending nevertheless.
