My family has been coming to this bakery for decades and I am saddened to report it has changed and isn't the wonderful bakery I remembered. I ordered a large cake and pre-paid $209. When I arrived at the designated time, my cake wasn't ready. I waited patiently. Once ready, I asked for Happy Birthday writing. The writing was hasty, sloppy, and illegible. I asked to have it redone and was told it would take 10 minutes. It took more than 30 minutes. All in all, my cake was handed to me more than an hour past the designated time and it' still didn't look nice. Really upsetting experience. read more

Got the coconut whiteout cake slice. So good that I finished it within 2 blocks lol. It's not too sweet and it's fresh... a hint of some fresh mango fruit bits in the middle section which seems odd but actually it works... what an interesting blend. The asian lady came out after 4pm stating it was closed even though there was at least 5-6 customers waiting outside. She was very rude. I will never go back. Last time I had Phoenix strawberry cake was on my one year wedding anniversary about ten years ago. I always wanted to go back to get cake from there but I always dread the traffic to ge there. On this trip, we didn't have the kids with us so I was adamant about getting my cake from there. We arrived 20 minutes before closing (they close at 5pm on Saturdays). There was a short line outside. We put the cake in a cooler bag with ice packs while we enjoyed some k bbq. When we got home we served it around 10pm. The good: the fresh whipped cream, fresh strawberries and the sliced almonds. Very fresh and sweet fruits and the whipped crème was light and delicious. Cake also moist and just a touch of sweet. Easy to cut but it's a very tall cake so needed help to keep the slices in tact haha I was in awe watching the owner (?) freestyle write a birthday message on the cake with such ease. Chinatown hot spot! So when I first pulled up, there was a giant line to get whatever they sold here. After an hour trip on the DASH bus we came back and the line was shorter so I got in line and finally got my turn. I showed them I checked in Yelp and they hooked me up with their almond crunchy cookie specialty and it was fire!!! I'm so happy to find this place. As a child my Mom would always get the strawberry cream filled cake for *our birthdays (*my 2 brothers & myself). I was hoping to see a picture of the sheet cake as that is the one she always got us. My mom & lil brother have passed (2020) & sadly I haven't had a service for them yet (yes hard to admit but they passed 4 weeks apart to the day & it has taken years to recover) anyway, I know one thing, when I do have their Celebration of Life, I will definitely be ordering the largest one or a couple large sheet cakes as ALL our family members will recall these were part of our childhood trademark birthday cakes from my amazing Mom. My brother and I were on the hunt for something sweet while in Chinatown, so we looked up a few bakeries and chose this one because it had the longest line (always a good sign). We were immediately surprised by how friendly the service was, especially the guy manning the store. He welcomed us in, asked us if it was our first time there, and was in a great mood, which immediately made us feel welcomed. We picked up two slices of cake including their strawberry one, which seemed the most popular according to others in line, and two almond cookies. One cake was layers of yellow cake with guava, mango, and one other fruit I can't remember, topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut. The famous strawberry cake was layers of yellow cake, whipped cream, and fresh strawberries with almonds on the side. Both cakes were light, fluffy, and not too sweet - making them a good dessert for hot days. The almond cookies were so delicious - buttery, a little crunchy, but also soft. I found the offerings to be pretty typical for a Chinese bakery, but I don't mean that in a bad a way, just to help explain the vibes and offerings better. The summertime Strawberry cakes and mango are here, you can never go wrong with the Napolian! I tried the pineapple Napolian this time; it is just as good as the original flavor, but with the additional pineapple sweetness. My first time at this Phoenix Bakery & I'm super surprised I had never heard of it since it's been around forever! I grew up in Downey which isn't too far from DTLA but I guess as kids you don't always get to leave your "bubble." So one Sunday afternoon we were in Pasadena & craving a sweet. We couldn't decide on a sweet place here and one of us mentioned the butterfly dessert. So we detoured & drove to DTLA! To my surprise, there was a line. So I hopped off and waited while they went to park. Parking isn't that easy but luckily they found a street spot just a couple blocks away. The line moved fairly fast and when we got to the door for next in line, Lorna who works there monitoring the line was super friendly and talkative. She was talking a little about the history & told us she's been working there since she was 16!!! Fascinating! Lorna was so awesome that she got my friend, who's birthday it was, a free treat!! Okay, onto the desserts! The strawberry cake, their signature, was delicious! I loved the walnuts on the side. The fresh strawberries inside is a great add. The honey butterflies were a bit too sweet for me, but addicting. The almond cookies remind me of childhood so it's super nostalgic. Can't forget the pink boxes they sold at stores & had yummy almond cookies. This place is the originator!!!! Who knew?! When we were paying for our treats, we could see the back where the magic happens and they have an old school machine which cranks out the treats. Another fascinating moment! So nostalgic.
