A short bit ago, a buddy of mine, who is a LA native, gave me a tour around Chinatown. Our first stop in our walk around is this historic institution amongst the ocean of bakeries that exist throughout the Los Angeles cityscape - Phoenix Bakery. This humble bakery sits on 969 N Broadway and has been in operation a staggering 86 years since it first opened its doors in 1938. THE STORE: From the line of people snaking out the entrance to the egg yolk yellow and Tiffany's store minty teal paint to the huge sign with a shy cartoon boy waiting forever to gift someone cake, you can't miss spotting this bakery as you walk down the street. As with the other buildings in the area, much of the architectural charm comes from its "frozen in time," classic touch in decor and styling. In an aged cabinet is a collection of newspaper articles about the bakery along with Phoenix Bakery merch (toys, aprons, etc.). On top of checkerboard countertops are displays filled with various cakes, danishes, cream puffs, and more. Behind the counters are huge refrigerator units packed with sheet cakes. FOOD: STRAWBERRY CAKE: Despite all these other selections, there is just one item that everyone eagerly waits in line for - their iconic strawberry whipped cream cake ! It is its straightforward simplicity that makes it so appealing. A double layer of sponge cake is filled fluffy whipped cream and chunks of strawberries. It receives the high praise of being "not too sweet." From what I'm told, it has maintained consistency in its taste and make which is why it has stood the test of time. This review is purely for the whipped strawberry cake. I was gifted a slice by a dear friend of mine who knew I was going through a tough time, and when I say I INHALED this cake, I am not over exaggerating. The cake itself is beautifully balanced. The sponge is light with a hint of sweet. The whipped cream is airy, soft and has the perfect texture. The sweetness comes from the high quality strawberries that are diced and distributed throughout the cream in layers. I was blown away, and it's not often dessert has this effect on me. There are Asian bakeries in Westminster that I've grown up with that do cakes similar to this, so I was always skeptical when hearing about how good this cake was. I was soooo wrong, and the hype is very deserved. In fact, people should be lining up DAILY for this cake. I plan to visit and try the rest of their desserts. Used to come here every weekend since I was a little kid up til about my early 20s (mid 1970s to early 1990s). My parents didn't drive, so we always took the bus til I eventually had my own car. When I attended a church, which was nearby, we would walk over after Sunday service. Back in the day, it was a real treat to get something from Phoenix Bakery. A lot of people love their signature fresh strawberry cakes. I always loved their "Butterflies", which back in the day was made out of Egg Roll Skin then deep-fried and covered in Honey. Now, it's made out of Won Ton Skin (So, it's now much smaller) The other thing is that it used to be coated in honey...now that the ingredients are listed, it says "corn syrup". So higher prices, smaller servings and cheaper ingredients. I only came because I wanted to pick up some butterflies for a small family reunion and then to Queen's Bakery for their "Rice Puffs". These are long time treats that my generation loved while growing up as well as our parents, grandmas & great grandmas and of course, our own children. We always purchased these to give away as gifts esp to out of towners. Lastly, Phoenix Bakery is a Chinese Bakery since 1938. I did not see a single asian person working there. Not that I'm racist, but being that I grew up coming here, it was a bit of nostalgia for me, but a disappointment to see 100% NON-asians when I went (on Mother's Day). At least when I went to Queen's Bakery, there were Chinese folks working there. I assume they were family, but who knows. read more

Came here on a Saturday and there's a short line - got the ube coconut cake and the Napoleon. The cake is really flavorful and didn't have any weird artificial after taste but it is on the sweet side. They do have quite a variety like strawberry almond cake (which is their classic I believe) and they do have a pastry section as well (Crossiant, Danish, almond bear claw). The outside of the bakery is super pretty! The staff are helpful and friendly as well! Definitely recommend to check it out if you are in the area! read more

This is a much long over due review for one of the spots that I will actually miss if I ever leave Los Angeles. I moved here some years ago and was introduced to Phoenix Bakery by an LA native friend. We would come here for their famous strawberry cake and there were a few years where I'd receive a whole cake for my birthday which, like anything else you consume in excess loses its lustre. Every time we drove by, it was usually packed so the motivation of stopping by has been little since the pandemic. I have little patience in big crowds but today we took a quick break before lunch time to pick up a Napoleon and a strawberry eclair. It was my first time having the strawberry eclair but I must say that it was the absolute freshest, fluffy and perfectly sweet eclair I've had in my life. We live very close to another French bakery that does eclairs very differently, they are rather rich and heavy so I really enjoyed the contrast that Phoenix had with their lighter version you can't get sick of. Service here has always been stellar and today Lorna helped ring us up. She also gifted us an extra strawberry eclair to try by surprise and I just wanted to give her a big shout out for providing such a kind and unforgettable experience. We ate it in the car and now have one waiting for us for later. The custard in the middle was pure perfection, the two strawberries were immaculate and the cream was well-balanced! I hope this bakery continues to thrive, it deserves all the love from the locals and new comers. We have a big fan from Poland waiting to return for her bite of the famous strawberry cake! We love this place! I'm asking friends to please support this bakery. They've been around since the 30's!!! And for me, is an emotional landmark. Over the years, they've helped us celebrate so many milestones and memories. They are one of the few bakeries who catered to the chinese palate, making cakes that reminded my aunts, uncles, gōng gōng and pópó of home . They've been a part of so many lives over the years and made it through so many tough times the world has faced (wars, covid, etc!). Now with the egg costs, they're not sure they'll survive. Absolutely delicious and a taste preserved in time. I am a native angeleno and growing up going to family parties, the strawberry cake from Phoenix Bakery was a taste that I remember. Their cake was synonymous with birthday parties. Located in the heart of Chinatown, there are about 4-5 parking spaces just outside the bakery. Don't let a line deter you here, every time I've visited there is always a line, but the line moves fast. I haven't tried all the cake flavors here but the strawberry and strawberry and custard are standouts. Certain cakes have to be ordered ahead of time so if you are sure we want a cake from here I would definitely suggest ordering your cake ahead of time. They also have tres leches here. I don't remember tres leches being available when I was growing up in LA (I may be dating myself here). I had slice recently and it was delicious. Been by this place many times, but finally stopped in. Bought a slice of the chocolate cake and a bunch of cookies. The cookies were great but the star of the show was the cake. I was expecting the usual super dense/heavy overly sweet mostly fudge type thing that you get from supermarkets. But this was not it. It was much more like a Black Forest Gateaux. Without sliced almonds is cheaper. Check in on Yelp for a free Almond cookie though it's nothing special. Their cakes are very tall and they don't have a huge variety of goods. It's mostly Western style pastries. My friend's daughter tried a mochi for the first time and liked vanilla. Ordering and where to pay is confusing. No more than 8 customers allowed at a time and they directed us to stand on faded numbers on socially distanced floor stickers. And the bakery floor is a square. It was someplace I would be excited to go to every time we went for dim sum in Downtown LA. This bakery has all the delights. They made the cake for my first birthday and for most of my birthdays as I was growing up. And when it's all said and done, I hope they're still around when I pass on so I can request the executor of my estate to have a big strawberry sheet cake served at my memorial! My wife brought a Moon Cake and almond cookies home - this was her first time visiting Phoenix Bakery. We have had decades of experience with these products in Honolulu, San Francisco and Norfolk, Virginia. The almond cookies are 4-star: they have no "old oil" flavor, they have no oil flavor, no oily residue on my fingers, the almond cookie texture is correct - slightly crumbly, the almond cookie was fresh (really important) and looked fresh. This would be a five star cookie if it had "some", or some more almond flavor. The highest quality, most delicious ("bet you can't eat just one") Almond Cookie I ever enjoyed was made (years ago) by the Wong Family in their Ho-Ho Restaurant - Norfolk and Chesapeake, Virginia. Totally over rated and over hyped. Terrible attitude of employee in store. Drove al the way here on a Sunday to get bbq buns and it took me more than 20 minutes (and no one was in the order line) because they take all the pick up orders first. It really should be one line and first come first serve. After waiting, the middle aged Asian lady over charges me (after I had to point it out). It took over 15 minutes to do a return and charge me again. I said can't you just refund me the difference since you over charged me and she started being very condescending, saying that it's not that much money and can't you wait for your bank to credit you (when she made the mistake). Never once did she apologize and she acted like I was the one who made the mistake. I did ask her how much the buns were before she charged me and it took two times to tell her how much they cost. My family has been coming to this bakery for decades and I am saddened to report it has changed and isn't the wonderful bakery I remembered. I ordered a large cake and pre-paid $209. When I arrived at the designated time, my cake wasn't ready. I waited patiently. Once ready, I asked for Happy Birthday writing. The writing was hasty, sloppy, and illegible. I asked to have it redone and was told it would take 10 minutes. It took more than 30 minutes. All in all, my cake was handed to me more than an hour past the designated time and it' still didn't look nice. Really upsetting experience. read more

My family and I have been getting cakes at Phoenix Bakery for all celebrations over the years! The classic and my personal favorite is the strawberry whipped cream cake it's topped with a light whipped cream icing, strawberries, and shaved almonds. It's the perfect flavor - not too sweet. The line moves quickly and they always have the strawberry cake stocked in 8" or 10" round cakes and they also have some sheet cakes but depending on the size you may need to do a custom order. Service is quick, be ready to order, and you can also ask to add messages. They also hold your cake for you if you want to go eat or pick up food from another restaurant. The parking lot is always full in front so you may need to park in the alley. The ambiance inside is very nostalgic to me, they also have more baked goods and serve breakfast items and coffee.
