The summertime Strawberry cakes and mango are here, you can never go wrong with the Napolian! I tried the pineapple Napolian this time; it is just as good as the original flavor, but with the additional pineapple sweetness. I must admit that I love their cream top so much, I always scrap out the cream on the cake first :) Friends and I also like their holiday cakes, it brings the holiday cheer to our gatherings. Awesome piece of LA Chinatown baking history. My daughter special ordered several boxes of cookies for pickup just before Christmas and requested the special blue gift boxes. It turns out that they were discontinued, but they dug up the last of their remaining stock to accomodate us. How awesome was that!?! My first time at this Phoenix Bakery & I'm super surprised I had never heard of it since it's been around forever! I grew up in Downey which isn't too far from DTLA but I guess as kids you don't always get to leave your "bubble." So one Sunday afternoon we were in Pasadena & craving a sweet. We couldn't decide on a sweet place here and one of us mentioned the butterfly dessert. So we detoured & drove to DTLA! To my surprise, there was a line. So I hopped off and waited while they went to park. Parking isn't that easy but luckily they found a street spot just a couple blocks away. The line moved fairly fast and when we got to the door for next in line, Lorna who works there monitoring the line was super friendly and talkative. She was talking a little about the history & told us she's been working there since she was 16!!! Fascinating! Lorna was so awesome that she got my friend, who's birthday it was, a free treat!! Okay, onto the desserts! The strawberry cake, their signature, was delicious! I loved the walnuts on the side. The fresh strawberries inside is a great add. The honey butterflies were a bit too sweet for me, but addicting. The almond cookies remind me of childhood so it's super nostalgic. Can't forget the pink boxes they sold at stores & had yummy almond cookies. This place is the originator!!!! Who knew?! When we were paying for our treats, we could see the back where the magic happens and they have an old school machine which cranks out the treats. Another fascinating moment! So nostalgic. The first time I tried Phoenix bakery was when we had to order a birthday cake for one of my coworkers on short notice. We used Postmates and ordered their classic cake with a strawberry filling and almond on the outside. It was SO insanely delicious and so fluffy. Not too sweet but just sweet enough. I love Phoenix Bakery! Been loving them for over 30 years! They are still open and operating churning out their signature strawberry cakes! I bought a small cake now $20, and a sesame and lotus ball pastry at $1.75 each. Years ago they would offer Dim Sum to go, but no more. There are frozen mochi ice cream to go and cakes by the slice. Checking in on Yelp rewards you with a free almond cookie! So remember to check in for the occasional business rewards. Parking was easy. Not a very long line. First of all, I really try my best to put in a good word any time I can. I only write when the experiences are unusually poor. Most often, you can tell a lot about a business not by their success, but by how they handle problems post-transaction. I am very disappointed with my first (and last visit) to this bakery. I was looking forward and drove some distance to pick up the cakes. I ordered a slice of tiramisu and a strawberry cake as I was told these were top choices among customers. Unbeknownst, my ENTIRE FAMILY had really bad food poisoning. It was such an awful experience and bizarre to say the least. All of us woke up in the middle of the night at the same time complaining about a sudden stomach wrenching pain. And from that point, we couldn't go to sleep and kept running to the bathroom for both upper and lower symptoms well into the next day. I also really debated on whether to call. I eventually did because our symptoms were pretty bad, and so I very nicely let them know that some quality control may be needed - perhaps a spoiled ingredient or someone missed washing their hands, etc. I hate to call anyone out, but the response and attitude depicted that of a very unprofessional and nonchalant employee, to say the least. At that point, I became irritated and requested a refund. She basically said nothing could possibly happen to their cakes, and that she's pretty sure other people would have called if that were the case. Yikes. Yes, while you work at a local well-known bakery, life is life and things that involve food cannot possibly be 100% all the time. We are reasonable customers, and we get it. But don't be arrogant when someone is calling in to report a genuine concern, especially because the concern involves our health. It would not hurt to say hey thanks for the feedback, I will let my team know. When I asked for this individual's name twice, I was met with silence. Very dodgy. I was then put on the hold without a hey, hold on just a sec, I'll be right back etc. When she returned to the phone, she said that the upper manager was willing to make us another cake. Okay, first of all, lack of listening skills and - why would any of us dare to consume another cake from this bakery when we've barely recovered from food poisoning! Not very good judgment... I can tell you that we ate very light meals earlier in the day (and are watchful eaters in general), so the cake(s) was/were the common culprit denominator. read more

Every year as a child, my mother would buy me a fresh strawberry birthday cake with almonds from this bakery. I looked forward to this delicious cake every year. Recently, I found out that a friend of mine never had a fresh strawberry cake. So, for his birthday, I bought him a $30 mixed half and half cake (half fresh strawberries and the other half banana and strawberry). When I went to pick it up, thank goodness they did not write his name yet because they misspelled it on the form (even though I spelled it properly in my e-mail). I gave the lady the correct spelling and she still messed it up and just wrote over the misspelled letter (how tacky) with no apology or anything. My friend overlooked the botched name and was super excited about tasting this cake I grew up with as a child. Unfortunately, our excitement waned once we cut into it. The cake was super dry and was not tasty. This was definitely not the cake I grew up with as a child. I was disappointed because I spent $30 on a cake that was inedible and that I hyped my friend up about and it turned out to be such a disappointment.
