Really good. Instantly one of my favorite places in Portland. For drinks, the Southhampton (non-alcoholic) was really good. Nice acidic, complex flavors. The Thai iced tea OTOH was fine but nothing special. An issue with both drinks though: the whole thing was filled with ice! You're done in two or three sips. We had to order a second round of both, which ended up costing us $26. Which I guess is fine as a once-in-a-while, celebratory type of thing, but not something I want to do by default. The pork belly bites were good. I appreciated the texture. I don't like when the fat is difficult to chew and stuff, and that wasn't the case here. Although I do prefer a more juicy texture. These were more "meaty". But the combination of the bites with raw, super thinly sliced garlic, chilles, makrut lime leaves, cilantro, lime and sticky rice is really fun. The salad was incredibly. Probably my favorite part of the meal. Just so, so, so, damn good. The lettuce itself was good but not great. I would have preferred crunchier texture. Also a little more flavor from the lettuce itself. But the dressing was incredible. It was _savory_. Usually dressings will be acidic. Sometimes sweet, sometimes creamy. You don't see savory dressings too often though. Iirc, it was fish sauce and soy sauced based with a little lime, coconut cream, and maybe something else. Everything in the salad was perfectly coated with the dressing. When you take a bite, it just is the perfect amount of saltiness, savoriness, and creaminess, and it makes your mouth water. The thinly shaved apple slices pair with the dressing so well. And so do the grapefruit! And the fried shallots. Ugh. So freakin' good. The fried rice was pretty good. I thought it could have been a little more toasty. It also was a little too soft. It was still good though, just not great. I liked the sort of herbal flavor you get from all of that cilantro and green onions they throw in there. The masaman curry was really great. Seriously. It had a good flavor. I could have used a bit more flavor, but it was good. I absolutely loved the _fried_ potatoes in there though. They get 'em seriously crispy, when those crispy bits soak in that curry, it's just glorious. I've always had boiled potatoes in curries before, but never fried, and tasting those crispy bits with curry was really something to experience. The other thing that I loved about the curry was the generous amount of fried shallots they threw in there. So good. Overall, I was super happy with our meal. We had leftovers too. A rare thing when I'm at the table. Forgetting about the drinks, our meal was only $57. For this quality of food, and considering we got an appetizer, salad and ended up with leftovers, that is a huge bargain if you ask me. So we will probably be coming back pretty regularly. Muu kua grua was the perfect little taster of crispy pork belly (highly recommend getting sticky rice on the side), their kua tofu was perfectly fried with a crispy/chewy outside and soft tofu on the inside with a tangy/umami seasoning, the Miang plaa jaramed was probably my favorite dish with a whole fish cooked to perfection and sticky fish sauce that was to die for (comes with lettuce wraps). The paella was also another hit and the gai lan were simply Chinese broccoli but cut and cooked perfectly. I could go on forever about this place. They have a lovely heated outside patio with great decor and their service was on point. Servers give great recs so don't be afraid to try something new! Definitely a must visit! read more

For a city that has a lot of thai food, I was recommended this place by a colleague and boy, it delivered. I would argue it was the best thai food I've had in my life and wish I had more time to eat through the menu. Relatively small shop but very Portland vibe. Street parking is hit or miss pending on when you go but service for takeout was pretty quick. But geez, the flavor on the food here is insane. I got a pad see ew for lunch and while price is a bit higher than normal for thai food, it is so worth it. The pad see ew has some char but the sauce that coats each perfect noodle is intense - sweet, savory, umami goodness. The pork is super tender and well flavored too and the vegetables are cut the right size, right tenderness and helps you feel healthier. Noodles are wide and floppy and thus take in the sauce perfectly. I dare you to find me a better rendition of this dish anywhere. They have a flipped menu for dinner, so worth coming different times of day. read more

I can't believe I just barelyyyy stepped foot in this place the other day when I live close by. I give it 5 STARS and we will definitely be back, especially to show off to friends and family who are visiting. ~ MAKE A DINNER RESERVATION ~ My husband and I wanted to eat out for dinner and I remember I saved this spot while driving by a while back. I noticed they close in the middle of the day, so we waited until 5 PM for it to open. I figured we'd be one of the first ones there, but we arrived a little after 5 PM and all of the tables outside were already filled! Fortunately, the host was able to seat us at a table where the reservation didn't start until after 1 hour, so she said if we wanted a quick dinner, we can certainly do that. Otherwise, she said, the wait time was about 1.5 hours! I highly recommend making a DINNER RESERVATION ahead of time as this place is a LOCAL FAVORITE. I think we just got really lucky this time. ~ FOOD & DRINKS ~ We wanted to try everything on the menu, but settled on ordering the MUA KUA GRUA (glazed pork belly bites) with STICKY RICE to start, PRAWN CURRY, and the THAI PAELLA. We also ordered a THAI ICED TEA (vegan, yay!) and an ICED COFFEE for me since I needed a little evening pick-me-up. My husband loved the MUA KUA GRUA (pork belly bites). It wasn't too overbearing as a starter, just delicious enough to satiate his hunger before the mains arrived. The THAI PAELLA was heavenly and SPICY. My favorite part of it was that the rice at the bottom of the pan was burnt to a crisp and it definitely elevated the dish with that added texture. Absolutely a lovely experience at Phuket Cafe. We came on a Saturday at 9:00pm and it was still fairly busy. Luckily, we made a reservation and were seated right away. The service 10/10. Spot on. Frequently did check ins and consistently filled waters. The food 8/10: The flavors are extremely powerful. Next time, I would order a couple sides to balance out the main dishes. I thought pairing the paella and steak would be good but the saltiness and favors were sooo overpowering. You definitely need a side of white rice if you order the steak. The paella is great on its own. We got 4 dishes + 2 cocktails and the bill came out to $152.00. Keep in mind, we ordered the ribeye which was $69.00 (This dish cannot be skipped!) MAKE A RESERVATION here! I'm a dummy and completely forgot to make a reservation, which resulted in me having to wait for 2 hours. I got here at 6pm as a walk-in, and my jaw dropped when the hostess said we would get seated close to 9pm. I ended up making a last-minute reservation for 9pm because I really wanted to try the Thai paella and went to get a massage to kill some time. Well, halfway into my massage (about 40 minutes later), they called me saying I could get seated immediately because another reservation canceled. I passed on that because I wasn't nearby, but I got there around 8pm (after my massage) and was able to get seated right away. Anyway, I'm so glad we got seated "early." The service was excellent and the food was delicious. For drinks, the Thai tea was good, and the "Higher Revelation" drink was very interesting (in a tasty way). It's a refreshing, fruity-milky drink that also seemed fizzy but I don't think there was anything in the ingredients that was carbonated. For appetizers, I ordered the Kua Tofu (fried tofu with mushroom powder and Thai chili) and it was flavorful, but I didn't expect it to be tangy from the powder (I expected just umami from the mushroom powder) but it tasted like there was lime powder or something? Anyway, the main star(s) of the night were the dry aged ribeye (so good with the sauces) and the Thai paella. This is the second best paella I've ever had, even if it's not traditional paella. It was so flavorful and everything just meshed well together. The clams were juicy and the grilled octopus made the paella even better (this was a +$15 add on). For dessert, I ordered Thai tea ice cream sandwich, which was ok. The flavor of the ice cream was underwhelming and the cookie was alright. It was also topped with fried shallots, which tastes kind of weird with ice cream. Skip this dessert and maybe try the panna cotta or something (I should've ordered this). There's always a wait for dinner, and reservations are tough to get, so definitely book well in advance if you're planning to go for dinner. We ended up going for lunch, and it did not disappoint--absolutely delicious! We started with the Kia tofu, which was perfectly crispy without being greasy and packed with flavor. The Mon Tod (potatoes) came in a generous portion and were super tasty. The standout for me was the Pad See Ew--by far the best I've had in Portland (and trust me, I've tried it at just about every Thai spot in town). The curry noodles were also a hit, with a perfect balance of sweetness and just the right amount of spice. This has become one of my favorite Thai restaurants! The ambiance, the service, and the food- chef's kiss. We sat outside on the patio which is so nice during the summertime. Our waitress was super friendly and took the time to explain all the dishes and answered all of our questions. Now for the food and drinks, everything really tasted just the way they looked-delicious! Phuket Cafe is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Portland. Its sister restaurant, Langbaan, which shares the same address, has AMAZING food, but the price point is too high for regular visits, and booking a reservation for my preferred date is difficult. However, at Phuket Cafe, the prices are more affordable, and the variety of flavors that Thai cuisine offers are all there. Booking is easier, and even without a reservation, I've only had to wait a little bit. Every single meal offers great taste, spice, and color. Even simple menus like fried tofu or side potatoes offer so many different flavor profile and texture. The cocktails are great too. There are bar seats as well as covered outdoor seating. Comfortable and casual. The staffs are friendly and help us with recommendations and tips on how to enjoy the dishes more deliciously. Oh, and I ordered Uber Eats delivery last weekend. I didn't expect the food to be as good, but I was pleasantly surprised by how crispy and tasty the tofu and potatoes were, even in a delivery order. Great for both lunch and dinner. read more

Miang Plaa and albacore Oh, we got here for our reservation and we're seated right away. The restaurant has a very tropical ambience which was really cool proceeding was all pretty close quarters as we were in the dining room. We ordered quite a bit of items, so we got the steak, medium rare, the curry some drinks, the albacore and the whole fish platter (miang Plaa). Must eats: the Miang Plaa was absolute amazing. The whole fish is edible and nicely fried and so much flavor in each bite and enhanced by the sauce. It's crispy almost like a harder tempura and almost halibuty in taste. When dipped in the Miang pla sauce which is kinda tangy and wrapped in the lettuce it's soooo good. The albacore was also very good in that the pieces were very thick and tender. The sauce and crispy peanut brittle added a slight sweetness to it The curry was also good, but it was pretty much just curry and the steak was kind of salty. The company sauces with the steak were also really salty, so it was hard to balance to bite. Overall a very good meal and will definitely be back . read more

A little on the spendy side but What a phenomenal experience. Definitely recommend getting a reservation as the wait times can be long. My wife and I placed a reservation for the chef's table and I certainly recommend doing it too (unless you have a large party or would prefer sitting in the outdoor patio). Watching the chefs cook over the grill and prep the seafood infront of you just shows how fresh the food is and the level of detail and quality goes into each dish. In addition our server was incredibly friendly and attentive. My wife and I got the Fried Tofu and Panang curry. The Tofu was fantastic, light and crispy and super flavorful. I love spice but be careful of the birds-eye chili they use as a garnish. Panang Curry is a must in my opinion. The curry itself is thick and flavorful. The Wagyu steak melts in your mouth. At least once a year I journey from Baltimore to Portland OR, to visit my daughter and her family. Obviously that has an intrinsic value that knows no price to be treasured. Our go-tos are the Miang Plaa Jaramed which is perfectly spicy, crispy, and so flavorful, the Beet Root Roti which is a good mix of salty and sweet with a mochi-like texture, Muu Kua Grua which pairs so well with the thinly sliced garlic and thai chilis on the side, and Thai Paella which can be spicy for those that don't eat spice. Dropped by Phuket Cafe on a weekday; was sure to make reservations because I knew this place would be packed, and boy was it! I got there right at opening and had a reservation for 5 pm which definitely came in handy. My friend and I were promptly seated and basically started salivating over the menu. We made a pact that it was either drinks or dessert so we saved our sugar consumption for the day for our dessert (aka I saw that mille crepe cake and had to have it). Foodwise, we kept it vegetarian (yay for me!) and went with the pandan roti, curry puff, eggplant, and we each grabbed the curry with tofu/veggies. If you know me at all, you know that eggplant is my favorite veggie so I have to say that this place KILLED it with the eggplant. Seasoning was wonderful and the fried shallots were just a perfect crisp and crunch. Literally so good I dream about eating it again. The curry had a good complexity and I appreciated the heat that spiced up the entire meal. The curry puffs were good as well~ Our least favorite was the pandan roti because pandan + cheese + condensed milk just didn't make sense for our palates. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't BAD but I can't say it was good either. We finished everything off with the mille crepe cake but tbh Imma go back for the kakigori at some point lolol Service was friendly, food was good, and the interior is so so cute for how small it is. One of my favorite restaurants in Portland and one I always recommend to folks who are visiting town! Phuket Cafe has the same owners as Eem and the dining experience is just as incredible without the long lines. I've been seated pretty quickly as a walk-in on weeknights but in the future I would try to make a reservation, especially for larger groups. For dinner, I LOVE the beet cheese roti and Thai paella. The roti served with condensed milk is sweet and salty and ridiculously addicting. The paella has a little kick to it and I'd recommend adding in the grilled octopus and mussels. The portions aren't the biggest - that would probably be my only complaint. There is street parking nearby but it is usually pretty busy in the area so plan to walk a few blocks. read more

This place is quite busy! (No reservations) There was a line before opening on a Wednesday evening, but I think everyone got a table. They have a nice outdoor structure with heat lamps. There's not very much airflow when the windows are covered. Proof of vaccination is required to dine indoors. Food is served family-style for sharing. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the food. Pandan roti 4/5: an interesting sweet/savory starter--slightly chewy pandan "tortilla" stuffed with cheese and served with sweetened condensed milk. Pork belly 3.5/5: The pork belly was good, but it's kind of hard to make pork belly not taste good. The dish seemed to be missing something--perhaps the sticky rice they offer, but is not included? Paella 3/5: This is a pretty spicy dish! It definitely cleared my sinuses. You get a thin layer of rice, which was not crispy on the bottom and slightly soggy. I also found it a bit salty. Whole fried pompano 5/5: This was hands-down our favorite dish. The fish was tender, and the seasoning was good. It's served with leaves for wrapping the cubes of fish belly, and the bones are tasty too! Abalone 2/5: I don't think this is fresh abalone. The broccoli stems were tough. Jasmine rice ($4 extra!) was offered for the minimal sauce. Small serving for $15. Crepe cake 4/5: nice texture and presentation, but I couldn't really appreciate a coffee and passion fruit flavor. It was still enjoyable. Overall, good service, but small portions. The only things I would order again are the fried fish and crepe cake. read more

It tasted as if there was too much tomato sauce in a pasta. I don't know if there were any tomatoes at all in a dish, but that's just how it tasted. It was not a balanced dish at all. We arrived about 10 minutes before they opened at 5pm on a Friday and were the 12th group or so in line. They currently do not take reservations and the restaurant quickly filled up upon opening. Expect 1-2 hour wait time during regular dinner hours. They have indoor, bar and outdoor seating (with a cute enclosure and heater set up). For drinks we really enjoyed the Coffin Maker. Complex flavor journey but refreshing and not overly sweet or bitter. Would definitely recommend trying this if you had to choose just one cocktail. We tried four snacks, one of which was a daily fish special, and one main dish. On snacks, would recommend the pandan cheese roti and curry puffs. Thai paella packed a little heat and much flavor. Mussels were a little undercooked but overall dish flavors were a pleasant spin from your regular paellas. Crepe cake dessert was also sizeable to share between two and was enjoyable and not overly sweet. As a huge fan of Langbaan, Paadee, Eem, and Hat Yai.. I had 100% confidence that Phuket Cafe would be perfection and I was absolutely correct. These chefs do no wrong. We ordered a lot, more than 2 people should be able to justify, and we had absolutely zero regrets and ate every bite. The curry- SO full of flavor and such a good portion. The prawns are amazing in this. We would have drank this sauce. 100/10 will order this every time. The paella- delicious, and such a nice hit of spice. I love the crispy rice in this. The potatoes- an absolute must order side. They are so delightfully crispy and flavorful. The curry puffs- also a must order, very similar to a samosa, but with a curry flavor. Came here for brunch early Saturday afternoon and it wasn't all that it was hyped up to be. All the shareable items had the same sides so by the end of it, I was really sick of eating lettuce and fried eggs. black cod curry - lettuce, Roti and fried egg and the fish was in a separate bowl with the curry. The fish portion was too small and the roti too oily. Flank steak - the meat was well cooked but not a fan of the curry potatoes. Came with two fried eggs. The fish sauce or whatever it was wasn't necessary; it seemed to over power the meat. Pork belly bites- small pork belly chunks. Over cooked. Too salty. Came with Another two fried eggs. Came in on a Friday night at 5:20pm. The estimated wait time was 45-60 min. We had the best parking and they took our phone # so we just waited in the car. We were sat at about 7pm. The host was so nice and thoughtful. We watched them check in with guests to make sure they would be comfortable at their table. It was refreshing to be greeted by someone so friendly and attentive. Cocktails! We got the Coffin Maker and the Breadwinner. We both preferred the Coffin Maker but both paired pretty well with our snacks! Snacks: Pandan Cheese Roti was delicious and fun. I would order that again. Mee Grob Lon Tau Huu Yee was also good and unique. I'd never had a dish that tasted quite like that and it was tasty! Soup: Dtom Klong with the smoked trout and chilis and mushrooms. This one was my sister's favorite. The spice had a nice kick and really opened up my sinuses. Great treat for seasonal allergies and colds. I could also see us enjoying this on a hot day! Main: We tried the Thai Paella. It was fully consumed but want to note it was a bit sweeter than expected. Fun to try but would order something else next time. Dessert: This was a hard decision on what to choose but we won! The Kakigori with Thai Tea, toasted brioche, grass jelly, brown sugar meringue, and egg yolk jam was the best thing to end our experience. During our most recent trip Portland, we decided to visit Cafe Phuket based on a recommendation from a fellow colleague. It proved to be as excellent choice as it was a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant seamlessly blends traditional Thai flavors with contemporary twists, creating a unique and memorable dining adventure. For our visit, we went with oysters, which came with non traditional accoutrements of fried shallots, lime and this delicious umami green sauce. We also ordered the chicken wings which were crispy, juicy and flavorful; it was accompanied by sliced ginger, cabbage and peanuts, which were unnecessary since it muddled the flavor of the wing For our mains, we shared the signature Thai paella and the prawn curry. While the curry was scrumptious and fragrant with prawns of a decent size, the true star of the night was paella with had Manila clams. Every bite was oozing multidimensional flavor that I am drooling as I am writing this review. It tastes event better as leftovers! I would skip the cocktails as they were weak and nothing to write home about and opt for wine instead. I also wish the portions were little bigger but inflation is real. read more

I was expecting the food to be much better here from all the tasty looking pics I'd seen but it was quite average, even a little sub par, especially for the price. We came on a Thursday so they just had outside seating (covered) as they reserve the indoor seating for laangban thurs-Sun. We had the pork belly bites app, (Muu Kua Grua) whole fried fish (Miang Plaa Jaramed), and the Thai paella. The pork belly bites were a bit salty and tiny. The fresh Thai chilies they came with were good but it needed something with it, like some leaves to wrap in or a little rice. The fried fish was probably our favorite. They pre cut and fry the pieces separately instead of frying the whole fish which I prefer usually but it does make it easier to eat. Most of the toppings and sticky sweetish sauce were pretty good too if a little salty. The Thai paella was probly the biggest disappointment as it seems to be their most popular dish. I also don't like how they are doing the add-on style for additional charge for all the things that it should come with anyway. The basic paella has only clams, and you must pay extra for both octopus as well as mussels, which around doubles the base price for a total of around $50 and while a large meal for one it's too small to share and be full. Also, it didn't taste good. Both the clams and the mussels tasted clammy. The octopus was ok tho. Rice didn't have much flavor. read more
