I have not had the privilege of sitting down here to eat yet. But while my daughter was in Marin General I ordered here twice to go. Both times were truly incredible. Their chicken sandwich now resides in my dreams when I'm craving a sandwich, and I return to my moments of sitting in the pediatric ward eating this sandwich. It's that good seriously. The bread is what makes it so special I think. I just wish we lived closer so I could eat here more often. My husband would hate it, given they aren't the least expensive restaurant you could eat at. Our go-to place in Mill Valley for many years. The food and service are consistently wonderful, and the staff is always accommodating to our disabled family member. Our fav dishes include the fritto misto, fagioli salad, pretty much any pasta dish, and their fish entrees are always spectacular. Their dishes change regularly, and our only disappointment is when they stop making a favorite (we hope the almond cake with the cherry and almond gelato will come back!). read more

I have mixed reviews for this place. I've been there 3 times now and every time me or my friends order any pasta dish, we are always very regretful. The description in the menu makes your mouth water but unfortunately the taste doesn't even come close. Pasta Pomodoro's pastas taste better than any of the pasta dishes from this place and they are on different levels, so this shouldn't be the case. Being that as it may, their pizza's are fantastic! The owner just wants to turn tables over, it's rush rush. However, I don't blame the servers one bit. The owner is responsible for delivering the worst customer service I have experienced at a "fancy" restaurant. When the owner hovers over your table and the servers collect your plate immediately after your last bite, you know the pressure is on to turn your table to maximize profits. I like to carefully order, chat up the server and savor the meal. Being rushed is simply uncalled for. I feel bad for the staff; it must be a bad working environment. El Paseo suffers from the same problems, but their food is better so it's tolerable. Take your money and go to Toast (comfort food), La Ginestra (especially if it's your birthday) or Bungalow 44 (hip crowd and a fun bar). These owners are all about good service and their staff reflects it. I'm not 100% yet on Vasco, I need to go there a dozen more times to be sure but it looks promising (they have live music). BTW, as an old fart that eats out a lot, I love this yelp stuff. I've wanted to say something about D'Angelo's for years. I also like reading other reviews, I find it helpful. There are a number of good businesses and excellent restaurants in Mill Valley! I love this town. read more

A little bit of Italy in Mill Valley. The owners are family and you feel as though you are as well when dining with family and friends. The atmosphere is friendly, the food is uncomplicated, delicious and prepared as you like it. I always ask for a 'half' and they will accommodate me with most every pasta, risotto, salad and even wine. A perfect way to eat light. I frequented d,Angelo over 20 years. Though they had their ups and downs, I was quite disappointed with the pasta niman sausage ragout I had last night. Pasta was simmered into the sauce, over cooked and soggy. Almost felt like it was a dish mistakenly ordered for some, reheated and served it to me. Definitely not appetizing. Piazza D'Angelo has to be one of the best Italian restaurants in Marin. Really great wine selection, my Husband and I were very surprised to see alot of our favorite sonoma and napa wines. We didnt have a heavy dinner just a couple of glasses of wine. We asked our great server about whats good and she nailed it. We got the frito misto and the salsiccia picante pizza. Frito misto was very fresh, perfectly cooked and came with a great aioli to accompany it. Salsiccia Picante pizza was amazing! You didnt even need to add red pepper flakes to it because the spice on it was perfecto! Definitely coming back here for more wine and dine! read more

Visited this place for the first time. Food is the most ordinary in taste, nothing special. An unpleasant moment with the choice of food. It was Friday lunch time. At the entrance asked the waiter to give a lunch menu. He gave the usual and said it was lunch. In the end, I paid twice as much as I expected. My blood sugar was low, and I have food allergies. I am the nightmare client. They were prompt, polite and the margarita pizza was amazing. Bar was loud but not wretchedly so, I would have stayed if I wasnt so hangry. As my blood sugar rose, the flavor of the pizza and basil hit me and I was sad that I had not saved any for later. The park bench may have been cold, but that last slice renewed my faith in Humanity, restaurants, bartenders and I had a show to catch at a venue with a closed kitchen. I've eaten dinner here twice and sat at the bar for a drink and snack several times. Always great and polite service as well as tasty food. Good wines to choose from by the glass and their cocktails are also yummy. Both times I ate dinner I did get a special entree so I can't speak to their regular (non happy hour) menu but if the additions are that tasty, I imagine the daily menu is scrumptious. read more

I needed to find a nice place for my wife's birthday. I read all the reviews for a family friendly place in Mill Valley and decided to go here. Our reservations were at 5pm and they were not busy yet. The problems started when it took over an hour and a half for us to receive our meals. Our children were served earlier. Their food arrived 45 minutes before ours. When I asked why there was such a delay between their food and ours, the server said he did his best. I asked to speak to a manager who said that it's normal to take and hour and a half for full service. I explained the 45 minuted delay between our children's service and ours. His reply was "fine, don't give your server a tip then". I was a bit shocked at his people skills. Needless to say, I found the manager to be quite rude. Here is another reason why. Unannounced, 3 desserts arrived, 1 with a candle burning for her birthday. Off to the side, I reminded him that we wanted to look at the dessert menu first. I guess he got upset at this because he immediately pulled everything away after momentarily placing it before my wife and children. It was all rather shocking and abrupt. The candle still burning as all desserts were taken away. My wife was upset. So I asked for the bill so we could leave. I reiterated why we were unhappy with the experience. His reply, "we comped your wine and desserts, so what else do you want?" The funny thing was we did not ask nor eat the desserts he presented. And he had still charged us for the wine. I have never been treated with such disrespect at a restaurant. I love to give good reviews. But this place was the worst service I have really experienced. I'm not a fan of one star reviews. Things have to be pretty bad to get a one star review, and I've been going to D'Angelo's off and on for 25 years. But the experience I had last night has left me no choice. We decided to have a nice birthday dinner with my husband and my parents on a busy Thursday night. We had a lovely table and we were all set to have a great evening. The food was barely edible. The pizzas were doughy and cold in the middle. The pork belly was not cooked and frankly disgusting to look at (and I'm a fan of the pig). My husband's pasta was chewy and oily. The "special" that was recommended to me (the petrale wrapped in homemade bacon) was disgusting. It was sitting on a bed of something green that smelled like gym shoes. I was so bummed. The waiter was sweet, so I guess that's a plus. But I had to ask the bus boy to bus the table. Food had been sitting there and the smell was bad. I interrupted his conversation with his friend to ask him to bus the table. Sigh. The restaurant was humming and packed. Everyone around us appeared to be having a grand time. I can't image that we were the only table with sub-par food. I will not be back. The only memorable part of the evening was how bad the food was. read more

I have enjoyed Piazza D'Angelo for decades whether just for a drink or for lunch and dinner. However the Petrale Sole I had today for lunch was lacking. Although the ingredients were fresh and excellent, it was not prepared as well as it should have been. The fish, sauteed greens, and potatoes were too salty. There was too much liquid in the bottom of the plate. Possibly the capers were not drained enough and the greens could have been served in a separate plate. Also, the butter sauce needed more lemon. PS. The service was excellent. It is nice to see a restaurant operated by a second generation. read more

Today darling daughter and I had a ladies' day out, my Mother's Day present. It was a spectacularly wonderful day. I'm starting here, but the day started when she arrived shortly before 10:30 bearing a Bakesale Betty's bag containing a consolation prize signature fried chicken sandwich for Alan, a disassembled one for me for later and another for her guy when he gets home tonight. Plus a complimentary strawberry shortcake. What a sweetheart. We drove to Mill Valley, parked downtown and walked around a bit in the sun before coming here for lunch. The restaurant was empty because we were early, but filled up as we were there longer. A basket of breads, one white, one whole wheat w/ walnuts arrived w/ butter. We each had a glass of a very nice Italian Sauvignon Blanc. We split a Fritto Misto con Verdure di Stagione w/ deep fried squid, tiger prawns, scallops, sea bass, asparagus, broccoli, bell peppers, and sage, served w/ tartar and marinara sauces. There were lots of tentacles and rings and everything else was terrific. It was perfectly cooked. We shared an Insalata con Fagioli e Noci, a lovely salad w/ organic baby lettuce, shaved fennel, imported butter beans, toasted walnuts, shaved Parmesan w/ a whole grain mustard and balsamic vinegar dressing. They split it for us w/o our even asking. Finally we split a Pizza Quattro Stagioni w/ imported prosciutto cotto, asparagus, artichokes, mushrooms, mozzarella, basil and tomato sauce. We had the option of anchovies, but demurred. The pizza was artfully arranged, though differently than we had anticipated, w/ two slices w/ mushrooms, two w/ artichoke hearts, two w/ prosciutto and two w/ cheese. Asparagus spears delineated the quadrants. The crust was light and subtly sweet. It was an exquisite pizza and we couldn't finish it. Two slices were left. Service was attentive and warm. Nice comeback! We've been eating here for nearly 20 years, and after a 9 month hiatus since our last visit, we were blown away by the quality of the food. Classics like the Tortellini De La Casa as good as ever, and new dishes (Duck with Wild Rice, Swordfish over Brussels Sprouts and Salmon over Potatoes and Root Veggies were awesome. My wife and I live in Mill Valley, and this is by far and away our favorite restaurant. Excellent food, terrific wine list featuring a diverse range of Italian wines, very attentive waiters, and the list goes on. Quick note: this review is for catering (they did our wedding) So with that out of the way...Piazza D' Angelo has a deal with our venue and we were sort of pushed to use them which made us a little nervous. But wow...were we wrong. They were great! Wonderful, delicious food, really attentive service and very reasonable pricing - just a terrific experience. Quick background - Piazza D' Angelo is a lovely upscale restaurant in the heart of Mill Valley and they provided catering that was more like a nice restaurant dinner than the typical "event food" often found at weddings. We got lots of glowing comments about the food from our guests. A couple of specific benefits: 1) They were very flexible with the menu. We mentioned that we didn't want a classically Italian meal and they were easily able to put together a more neutral menu with a Mediterranean fish entre, a great steak option and a delicious home-made vegetarian pasta that may have been the best of the bunch. 2) They provide very reasonable all-inclusive pricing that includes all courses, bar service and the wedding cake (a major savings.) And neither the bar nor the cake felt like add-ons. They worked with us to select wines we liked and have a deal with a top notch Mill Valley bakery (Krumbs Kakes) that did an amazing, delicious, memorable cake. 3) They were really nice and really flexible. Special shout-out to catering director Sara Kmitch - she's a pro and really great to deal with. They accommodated pretty much all our special requests without any fuss and (in all but a few cases) without any up charge. We honestly felt like they cared about our wedding going well. i am editing my review of piazza...cuz something great has manifested here. not only is the service great here, but so is the food! damn! im so into it. last week i came here twice. the chef's specials are always done well. i had the braised beef ravioli with a argue...OFF THE HOOK! then i went back yesterday for the same and it was off the menu boo, but instead i had the tagliari (sp?)--wide noodles, with their beef tomato sauce ( i know i was in a beefy mood), and asked for a half portion with a side of broccoli rabbe. truly satisfying. really. they also have this baked wild shrimp with an almond crust (its a salad) that is wonderful. uh huh. not only great service, but comforting simple food. read more

A group of four of us decided to have drinks and dinner one evening. I ordered a vodka martini and when the waiter brought our drinks there were black/brown flecks (like pepper) in my drink (very obvious since vodka is clear and the tablecloths are white, albeit stained). Assuming it was a simple mistake I mentioned it to the waiter. He grumbled and took the drink away without saying anything intelligible, so I didn't know if he was bringing a replacement or not, which he eventually did. But the replacement looked like the same drink with the same black/brown flecks in it. I asked if maybe the bartender's cups were dirty or if he could see them and he replied "I don't see anything". I used a spoon to to pull a few out, but he said "I don't have my glasses." He was such a jerk that my friends and I decided to leave. On our way out, the owner was standing at the hostess stand and asked what happened. I explained what happened with the waiter and he said "Well, if we are not good enough for you, then I am sorry." Good enough to have clean glasses and drinks without things floating in them? Good enough to deserve a polite waiter? Good enough to have an owner that cares about these basic things? Yes, you are right. You are NOT good enough for me or my friends. read more

We would have given this place a 5 star if not for the bar being so incredibly loud. We had the butternut squash ravioli and one of the pizzas. The raviolis were incredible and the pizza was good, but not to die for. The bread and olive oil was delicious and our waiter was prompt and friendly. I've been going here since they opened. They've had periods with great cooking and other periods with lesser skilled cooking. Right now they have someone really good. I love their caesar salad...ask for anchovies if you want them. And their house made parsley pasta with mushrooms is excellent. This is inspired cooking. Another great night at Piazza! Friendly staff, great table for 12 exactly where we requested (on the back patio where it's quiet and more intimate), and great food and drink. They quickly brought water, drinks, delicious bread with pesto for dipping. Our orders came very quickly for a Saturday night. I had a simple mixed salad with beets, which was just wonderful---fresh greens, savory dressing, but would have liked a few more greens and beets for $8.50! I love that Piazza D'Angelo is open until 11 PM. On evenings that I work late and have no energy to prepare food at home, I head over for my favorite beet salad and a side of garlic roasted potatoes and veggies !! The waiters are friendly and fun, and the owners seem to be there almost every time I go in. They love their restaurant. I'm also a fan of the World Cup, and it's a great place to watch the games.......exciting energy! read more

I would personally like to thank the obnoxious owners of this over rated Mill Valley staple for sending me to a much better Italian restaurant. Good thing for them there's not a competing Chevys within walking distance because they would put this mediocre over 60's single sene out of business. On a Saturday evening I checked in with one of the owners for a table for 3. At that time there were many open tables but since the rest of my party was not present I decide to be a good patron and wait. I asked the owner if it would a problem to be seated in 45 minutes to which he said unequivocally no problem. 45 minutes later with my party in tow I was informed I was at the top of the list. 30 minutes after that I walked out and was treated to a wonderful Italian meal down the street at Frantoio. I have a nut allergy, and apparently the bread they leave on the table when you arrive has walnuts in it. I ate part of a piece of bread before realizing this (there's no sign, warning, the server didn't say anything) and spent the evening checking my breathing to make sure I didn't need to go to the hospital. Fortunately I only got exposed to a sliver of walnut, so I had huge lips, numb tongue, and wheezing instead of an ER visit. Shockingly, the staff barely cared. No apology from the manager, they didn't even come to the table. The waitress offered to find a benadryl, then eventually came back and said she couldn't. Fortunately we have a hard-working intern who ran out to the drug store as soon as it happened. As far as the food...maybe it was good? I don't know, it's hard to taste anything when your tongue is numb and you're afraid to put anything too large in your throat. I'm really surprised and disappointed in someplace as well-reputed as this in Mill Valley. If you're going to put something on the table that's poisonous to 1 in 100 people, maybe label it or say something? And if someone comes in and eats it without seeing or hearing a warning, maybe act like you feel bad or want to help? read more

Had an amazing lunch here! Food was delicious and service was great! We had the lunch special for $14.95, which included salad and pasta. Had the fagiole salad and orechiette with broccoli rabe and sausage. For an additional $6, I got a glass of their house white wine. For dessert, we had the pistachio gelato and lemon creme brulee. Mill Valley may be home to some of the wealthiest people in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a quaint town, a place where folks walk the down town area with both their young children and their dogs. It is not, however, a restaurant destination. I guess the close proximity to San Francisco along with the sky high rents that have left glaring vacancies in the downtown area, makes opening a restaurant here a sketchy proposition. We happened to be in Mill Valley on a recent Sunday afternoon and desired a good meal before hooking up with friends. We had been to Piazza D'Angelo several times over the years. Walking through the downtown area it appeared that all of the local restaurants were closed @ 4PM to get ready for the dinner crowds. That left only Piazza D' Angelo. We entered and were seated immediately as the restaurant appeared empty with most of the clientele seated at the bar to watch the football game on TV. The waiter got our drink order which consisted of mineral water and a coke, as we scanned the menu. After our drinks came we ordered immediately.. Our selection of the Spinach salad proved to be a good one the salad was topped with chopped mushrooms and onions with a scraping of cheese in a very tasty vinaigrette. The place began filling up when we ordered our entrees. Here's where the review takes one of it's biggest hits. The wait for our entrees. We noticed that folks at the tables surrounding us, people who placed their orders like 15 minutes after ours were enjoying their meals while we patiently waited. After a good 20 minutes my wife asked the server how long it would be to get our entrees. The guy, who spoke Italian, said something to us, 6 minutes was the only thing decipherable. 15 minutes later our entrees arrived. Folks who were seated and ordered their food long after us, were leaving. Now I must say that the food was good. The butternut squash ravioli was sensational ~ all 8 small raviolis, that were arranged in a circle on my large plate. The pork chops that my wife ordered came to the table warm, not hot, however, they were charbroiled very well and very tasty. My wife used the ladies room there. And the soap dispenser was all automatic ~ a fancy schmancy electric one. The only thing is it didn't work. A waitress so happened to be there as my wife struggled to get a drop of soap out of it. "Oh that happens all the time," the waitress cheerily declared skipping washing her hands entirely. Uggg. When I used the washroom, the soap and paper towel dispensers did work fine although the basket was overflowing and there was a lot of paper on the floor. Getting the check was another wait. When we finally asked our server for it, he replied as he did throughout our meal, "Of Course," as in, of course I'll take my sweet time getting you your check. The food was good however the service was horrible. Maybe in Mill Valley mellowness and slow are code words for good service. I don't know. But we were there for a good 2 hours and were $70 shorter for the experience. And all we had with dinner was soda and water. Too bad there weren't any other alternatives. That's the only thing that Piazza D'Angelo has going for it. read more

We had such a great dinner here last night, that I feel compelled to write it up. Though it was Saturday night and the restaurant was full, we decided to take a chance and see if we could get dinner with a reasonable wait. The wait was short and there was room at the bar for two of us to sit and two to stand while we waited. As busy as he was, the bartender was friendly and immediately took our order. Our waitress was genuinely welcoming but professional and gave us plenty of time to decide, recommending exactly the correct wine. The food was outstanding, especially the lamb and the osso buco. But the pistachio cake with cardamon gelato was probably the best dessert I've ever eaten! At one point the waitress diplomatically backed away and came back later when she saw we were in the midst of a conversation. Nice. It was the first time in a long time where I've felt the food and service was worth the money we paid. A refreshing experience! read more

There are a few reasons I love Piazza D'Angelo in Mill Valley. The two brother owners and their brother-in-law are from Calabria where my father was born. They have Italian speaking waiters and they are a family run business with children working too. They are less than a 10 minute drive from my home. They have an interesting diverse menu with seafood, meat, pasta etc. specialties from all over Italia. Theirs is fine dining with culinary delights to satisfy any gourmet types as their upscale clients have discerning tastes. Most wines from Italy come from the Tuscany region but my family's roots are in southern Italy and they have many wines from Campania, Calabria, Puglia & Sicily. But this is the main reason: their kitchen is like having my own kitchen. Many times I have a taste for traditional Italian dishes and even not traditional, but if they have the ingredients and it is not on the menu, they will make it for me. Pasta ala Carbonara, a Roman specialty, is a bit too rich for me the one portion so they make me an appetizer size, my wife doesn't like the way small cows are raised so Veal is out but they will make a Chicken or Pork ala Milanese with breadcrumbs, also will do a Chicken Marsala instead of Veal, and a dish I really like is Pasta ala Puttanesca which ladies of the night served to their customers, anchovies, capers, olives, garlic & parsely. The dish you see here in the photos I love...Pasta with Calamari and my wife does too but not the tentacles so I am happy to get them. You can see in the last photo we did "Faccendo La Scarpetta" which is enjoying what many in Italia consider the best past of the meal, sopping up the remaining sauces. "Scarpetta" is a little shoe and when it scoops up the sauce it is magical like Cinderella putting on her glass slipper. I prefer the Italian word "Scopa" which means broom. But, I recall my Grandfather telling me that in Southern Italy 100 years ago that many people were so poor and so hungry they felt like eating their shoes( made from leather from animals). read more

This place is as good as it gets. My husband and I have been coming here a couple of times a month since May. I usually order the Zuppa di Pesci and it is always light and flavorful. It's hard to find flaws about this restaurant, so I will list some of my favorite things: 1. Great service. Attentive waiters who make sure to refill your water! 2. Nice food overall. Great gluten free options and pastas, the margherita pizza is a must-order. 3. Family-friendly, but also perfect for a romantic dinner. 4. Heated outdoor seating, which I would highly recommend (it can get a little loud in the restaurant.) We went to Mill Valley to see a comedy show at the Marin Theatre and it's a great spot to have dinner before the show. They accomodated our group of 6 at short notice.
