One of the worst places to go for dinner in Chicago. The "Manager" Corey can not even mage the way she talk to clients. I ask straight out for the most popular vegan dish they have. They brought me a chicken wrap, when I asked to correct the order "She" showed up to tell me that the ghe kitchen was closing and they have "No time" to correct it. I come here often and it's a great local spot. I enjoy the atmosphere but I HAVE noticed the prices have change quite a bit recently. I know inflation is hitting everyone hard, but these prices are on par with **every** spot now in Andersonville, Uptown, and Lincoln Square for breakfast/brunch including some 5-star spots. I get the food is great and a good standard, but absolutely not on par with other spots in the neighborhood in terms of price. Been driving past this place for years meaning to try it out one day but judging by the patio chairs outside having metal arm rests that I can't fit my large body into without being in pain/uncomfortable I just hadn't felt like checking out if the chairs on the inside could accommodate larger people. Well a friend of mine with equal size told me she was able to find a seat inside she fit in so I gave it a try and while I can't fit the booth seating I can sit at their round tables & have now been back twice because the food is decent & my partner loves their giant coffee bowls. I wish I could sit outside on nicer days and if there were more accessible seating I'm sure more fat friends would want to come as well. read more

Whoa! The bacon benny was one of the best things I have ever eaten. Crispy bacon, carmelized onions and a perfectly poached egg, not to mention a wonderful creamy hollandaise. At the urging of my son, took half of it home so I could enjoy dessert. The lemon meringue pie was so ideal for a summer day. Sweet and tart with meringue that was cloudlike and delicious. What is going on with customer service any more? It's astonishing! I was in there this evening to get a dessert to go, and the kid who waited on me behind the counter was rudely abrupt and made no attempt to offer the basics of customer service, or at least what one is generally trained to learn in customer relations work. When I asked about vegan options in the dessert case, all the replies were simply "nope." And when I asked if they ever have vegan chocolate chip cookies or brownies, this person didn't even look at me, kept eyes cast downward, and again, offered a snappy "nope." (I can swear I've ordered such from your place before. In fact, I only asked this, because I expected I'd be told would when they are usually available). I worked in customer service for years, so it isn't as if I'm not sympathetic to when a person has a bad day. I'm consistently a good tipper, regardless, due to my insider knowledge and experience. This, however, was not "bad day" behaviour. This is a personality type that shouldn't hold positions in customer relations. This experience was enough to make me walk out and never want to return. Thankfully, there are now plenty of other vegan option restaurants and cafes with delicious desserts. And anyway, the food is not nearly as good as it was before. It's not like they don't have competition now, so they need to step up their game. read more

Me, my brother, and our girlfriends walked up north yesterday to look for furniture in Andersonville. We were looking for a brunch spot on the way and found this place on Yelp. Overall, this place was excellent. The coffee was great and the food was really good. My Bacon Benedict was exactly what I was craving and had caramelized onion with the poached eggs cooked perfectly. My brother got the New Yorker, my girlfriend got the Cajun Skillet and my brothers girlfriend got the Salmon Benedict. Everything was great, the serving sizes are pretty big but a great spot if you're looking to cure a hangover. We shared a couple gluten free pancakes as well and they have plenty of vegan/vegetarian options as well. Highly recommend. read more

The service was fine. The place itself was clean and cute. The food was...ok. Well, actually the food was good with the exception of the hollandaise sauce which I had asked for on the side. That was no problem, but it was cold. I mean out of the fridge cold which told me that it wasn't real, and their rationale is that it warms up when you put it on the food. So, that means cold sauce on warm food means that the sauce is warming up, and the food is cooling down. Not a good combo if you want hot food. I love hollandaise sauce and this is the first time I've heard this. It's always been at least warm or room temp no matter where I go. I can't fault the server for this. It's what they're told from the kitchen which makes me wonder who's in the kitchen. The coffee was insipid as was my husband's food. Will we come back? I dunno. Maybe? I dunno. read more

Peeled off from my bar crawl to come here for some food around 9 pm on a Thursday. I was seated right away and I asked for coffee while I waited on a friend to join me. They have soy milk, yay! Service was very prompt with coffee and refills for water as well as the coffee. When my friend and I finally ordered, it took an additional 20-30 min for our food to come out. They weren't that busy and had been so quick with everything else that this surprised me. We weren't in any rush though, so it didn't matter much to us. I got the Vegan Santa Fe Skillet which was a bed of potatoes, bell peppers, seitan crumbles, cheeze sauce and a lottttt of jalapeños. I like spicy so I ate some but even then, I still left about a dozen slices to the side for fear of future repercussions :) It also came with vegan buttered toast which is so excellent that they have plant based butter. Like wow!! I forget my friend's exact order but he ordered something with chorizo. It looked pretty greasy, which is typical for chorizo and he loved it! After all that, the bill was nice and cheap! Pick Me Up Cafe had to move closer to my neighborhood for me to finally, FINALLY, enjoy their food. I've been there twice recently, with friends, and I have come to realize that I should have made the trek to Lakeview long ago to enjoy their terrific food. The vegan selections are what drew me to visit, but Pick Me Up Cafe has a full menu that serves carnivores as well. We've had the vegan cheese sticks, the buffalo chicken (tofu) salad, a traditional egg and ham egg benedict, and the vegan santa fe scram. Everything was delicious. As of September 2020, all seating is on the sidewalk. I don't know how the Cafe is going to handle in-person dining once the weather gets cold and the city is still observing Covid-19 restrictions. I hope you all will consider patronizing this terrific restaurant, whatever happens, the same as I will. Your reward will be delicious food. read more

They also have very good OJ and coffee drinks. If I'm not in the mood for breakfast, I especially like their Buffalo Chicken Wrap with either soup of the day or fries. I was less than a quarter of a mile at the most so I wasn't sure why the delivery fee was $5. Since it was raining I didn't want to go pick up the order. Anyhow I really wanted to try their barbecue seitan sandwich so I decided to order and pick it up. The sandwich came with a side of your choice and I choose mashed potatoes. I actually like the mashed potatoes more than the sandwich. I've had seitan before and this one was very chewy and felt very rubbery. I wasn't a fan at all. I LOVE this place. It is hands-down my favorite spot in the city. Not only is the entire place insanely colorful, but each table has its own uniquely decorated top, and the lighting is perfect both during the day and in the evening. Their menu is vegan, vegetarian, *and* meat-friendly, and they serve breakfast all day, which will please the Ron Swanson and Leslie Knope in you, I promise! Their portions are large (I always bring home leftovers, whether it is after ordering an eggs Benedict or a burrito) and the music is always amazing (I've heard S Club 7, I've heard Whitney Houston, I've heard Ludacris). And the absolute best part about Pick Me Up, if you're not already intrigued from photos and reviews, is that anything on their shake and espresso menu can come spiked with alcohol (I highly recommend the cappuccino with Kahlúa!). Not sure why this place has such a high rating. I just had the worst dining experience I've had in years. After seating, it took our server at least 10 minutes to come take our order. It took 15 minutes to get our drinks, and 50 to get our food. Our server only stopped by after we were staring daggers at him and someone who appeared to be the manager at the 40 minutes mark. I was so angry when our food arrived I didn't even enjoy it. It was rage eating, because I was so hungry and just wanted to leave. There was no communication from staff about the delay, and no offer of a discount for the wait. I will never be going back here again. read more

Pick Me Up Cafe far exceeds my expectations when I think "cafe." This place is really more of a diner. I love being able to come here late at night and get some food, it's really a destination. For someone who doesn't drink alcohol, this is a great alternative in the neighborhood to all the other rowdy bars. The decor is artsy, very eclectic and interesting. The staff has always been friendly, so I won't give them too much grief for being overly hipster. And the food is really delicious. I always get the chicken ranch wrap, which is another option that exceeds my expectations. It's bacony, ranchy, a bit oniony, and the flavors meld really well to make it more than "just a wrap," in my opinion. I also love their homemade soups, it seems like they always have a different selection when I'm there. Though I can't quite remember which soups I've had, they've always been very savory, hearty and flavorful. My friend had the Mac & Cheese once, and he was a little disappointed that it tasted a bit powdery, though. The only issue, in this area of course, is parking. If you come on a weekend night, there are usually events in the area that make it impossible to find parking, but it's usually a good bet to pay for lot parking at the liquor store across the street, rather than risk your car on the street itself. read more

Fun, quirky place with a huge menu. Lots of vegan options, breakfast for dinner, pastas, quesadillas - really anything you could want. Prices were very reasonable for large portions. The gnocchi was something I expected to be just fine since the menu was all over the place but it was so delicious. There was a ton of garlic bread served with it and the sauce was peppery and really flavorful. I went when it wasn't crowded but service was great. Went for brunch with a friend. I'd never been before, but I found myself instantly charmed by the eclectic decor. Look for Garbage Pail Kids decoupaged on table tops, funky colors, glitter and the like. It's a quirky fun vibe, a cute take on a diner. The menu isn't altogether very exciting. Lots of staples, great vegetarian and vegan options, but nothing very imaginative. Having said that, the prices are amazing and the portions are massive. The drinks were relatively inexpensive, and, even better, big! Our table was kinda too small for 2 people. We had to rearrange where we were keeping our forks and drinks once the food arrived. Two cups of water, two cocktails, two sets of utensils, napkins and big plates of food was way too much for our table. Just kind of a weird thing. The service was fun and friendly. A couple servers interacted with us, and they were both super sweet, really outgoing, and complimented my outfit (which, of course, was great). I wouldn't say it's a destination restaurant, a hot spot. Pick Me Up doesn't fall into that category. It's your reliable, funky diner spot. Great to go with friends. Second of all, there's a great variety of vegan options, the food tastes fresh and is served quickly, and the "cheese" used is A+. I first tried the vegan berry pancakes and the vegan mac n cheese and had to come back again for the same two dishes. I've also tried a few of the shakes, the grilled veggie pita, the bumpen grinder (YUM), grilled cheese and tomato (MORE YUM), and the veggie burger. I'd recommend all of these (especially the mac n cheese made vegan). Definitely coming back soon to try the french toast!
