I wasn't impressed. It seems like, more and more, restaurant establishments try to position themselves with a twist on Southern cooking. In North Carolina, bbq is king and fried chicken is queen. These chic, uppity restaurants try to 'bend' and morph receipts to distinguish themselves. Picnic looked seemingly busy for lunch but as I observed the patrons, I noticed that their presence wasn't merely for the food but for the certain status it provided. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It didn't work for me. I don't like spending $10 on a simple chicken sandwich that can't even rival Chick fil a, pureed cabbage in a thimble, and pre-made hush puppies. The food simply didn't match the price tag. The portions were small and uninspiring. Durham has a lot of great restaurants to offer. I'll keep looking. read more

My husband and I FINALLY got around to trying Picnic today, and we had high hopes for some great barbeque since it had been on our list for a while. However, I left with mixed feelings about what was actually a rather average meal (which means our likelihood to return is very low, considering the plethora of above-average barbeque options in the area). First of all, the good! The restaurant itself is in a great location (is anyone else tired of trying to find parking downtown just to get to a decent restaurant?) on the northwest side of town where we live, and considering I am a lazy person who will whine about any drive over 20 minutes, convenience is a bonus. The rustic-style decoration is also great, and the restaurant features a cute, comfortable outdoor covered-porch seating with fans! Anyone who wants to eat outside in the summer in July knows that the overhead fans are a must. Inside, there's a large, easy-to-read blackboard which features their beer selection and daily specials. They have an open kitchen, and you can see from the dining room that the kitchen is clean, well organized, and all the cooks (and bussers) we saw were wearing gloves (my husband is a kitchen manager, so seeing a well run kitchen with good sanitary practices is important to him). The service was also prompt and pleasant. Where Picnic falls into the "meh" category is, unfortunately, with the food....which is kind of the whole point, right? The shining star exception was the quality of the meat itself- the pulled pork sandwich had tender, juicy meat that is characteristic of a well executed whole-hog approach to barbeque. However, the sauce (yes, singular sauce) was underwhelming, the sides were bland, and the deviled egg starter was downright bad. Picnic only offers their namesake sauce, the Pig Whistle, which NC barbeque traditionalists would be hard pressed to categorize correctly....which is what they claim makes it the best (the website describes it as "A little bit East, a little bit West - we call it The Great Carolina Compromise.") The main component is apple cider vinegar, followed by spiced tomato sauce- putting it squarely in the middle of the eastern vs. western style. My husband didn't appreciate the tomato-y component, being a strictly eastern-style fan, and I didn't appreciate the flavor or how thin it was, being a strictly western-style fan. Sometimes, compromise is NOT the answer. The sides/apps ranged from uninspiring to unpleasant. We started off with the deviled eggs, which were CRAZY mustardy and unbalanced, flavor-wise. Everyone knows good Southern style deviled eggs rely on both the proper texture and the proper flavor, and these had neither. The macaroni and cheese, while creamy as all get out, was also super bland and lacked any kind of discernible seasoning (no pepper, and no real cheese flavor either....it's as if they got lost in the cream and forgot to add the rest of the cheese). The shoestring fries were also under seasoned, and I would have appreciated if the menu had mentioned they were going to be shoe string before we ordered them (they are not my favorite fries, and if the menu doesn't specify, I'm going to expect regular fries). Continuing with the bland theme, the hush puppies (while super smooth-battered and not gritty in the least) lacked flavor, and the sweet tea was just meh. While I'm glad we finally got around to trying out Picnic, I'll continue to look at other restaurants in the area for my barbeque needs. read more

All of it succulent, plus additional sauces for all three - classic North Carolina vinegar based bbq sauce for the plate plus sweeter options for the ribs & brisket. Sides were great too - unremarkable hush puppies but great collards, creamy coleslaw, and a side of pickles that includes pickled radish and pickled carrots. Zero complaints, great portions. Picnic intrigues bystanders with the farm-style decor and signage from the road. Upon entry, it's a fine balance of traditional and modern Carolina BBQ with their homemade "Pig Whistle" sauce. Mac and cheese and collards are basic sides for any decent BBQ place. At Picnic, they are a MUST HAVE! The collards had the perfect combination of texture and drippings. I know everyone says to come here for the bbq. But really, you need to come here for their blackened catfish. My goodness is that some good blackened catfish. Perfectly seasoned, so much flavor--I have never been happier ever than taking advice from our server to order that dish. Mmmmm Don't get me wrong, the chopped pork is also very tasty and I personally love their biracial/mixed bbq sauce that is a little bit of eastern and western carolina bbq sauce. Their fried green tomato starter was not my favorite fried green tomato in the area, but the dipping sauce with it was pretty tasty. I also approve of their pimento mac and cheese too (but really who doesn't like pimento mac and cheese?) Every time I've driven by the place was packed so I was anxious to try. This place has been a local watering hole under several different names/owners over the last 15+ years. It's good to see a new business succeeding. As a NC native, I have high standards for NC style BBQ. Competition is high with Bullocks and Allen and Sons within a stones throw. Brennan, the general manager, took some time with us and explained the local farm (Bahama) where the pigs come from and Wyatt, the 'Barbecue Man's, passion for BBQ. Food was very good. Pimento Mac & cheese, hush puppies, house-cut fries and the deserts (bread pudding and chocolate chess pie) were the favorites. The barbecue sauce was their own vinegar-based sauce, was very good. The pulled pork BBQ sandwich was unfortunately disappointing. With the local pigs, cooked on site, I was expecting great, full-flavor pulled-pork. It was not flavorful. The sandwich, after adding the slaw and sauce was decent, but I wouldn't come back just for the BBQ. I was told to try the fried chicken, we had great service, they have a big selection of draft beers - so I'll be back to give it another try. read more

After a hike at Eno, this lovely BBQ establishment just so happened to be on Cole Mill road as we left leave Eno River. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and were seated immediately. I love the open bar, casual tables and the open kitchen concept. There was seating inside and outside. The black chalkboard lists all the local and domestic drafts on tap. The water is served in a clear bottle and a friendly waitress came over and took our orders. I had the boat which is a small paper cup container (similar to the ones at a food truck) filled with BBQ, slaw and hush puppies. It was just the right amount and the price is $8.95. The BBQ was flavorful and I did not need to add any sauce. If you do want sauce, the owner created a sauce made if Eastern and Western NC flavors to create what he calls, the perfect blend. We also had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and they were served with ranch dressing. This was not just any ranch dressing but a zesty ranch unique to Picnic. If you have an appetite, I recommend a plate with two sides over the boat. I saw the fried chicken come out and that also looked tasty. If you are looking for a nice environment, tasty Southern food and friendly service, pay the Picnic a visit. Stopped at this place on the way back from a fishing trip. I was pleasantly surprised. I tried the pulled pork sandwich and fries. The pork tastes great and the slaw wasn't overly mayonnaisey or runny. For an appetizer, we tried the trotter. It's a deep fried pig ankle served with ginger and some other sauce. When the trotter arrived it looked like a pork drumstick. Once we broke through the crispy outer crust we found tender juicy pork inside, it was delicious and the ginger sauce kicked it up a notch. There was a small snafu that delayed our orders and we were given fried green tomatoes for the wait. They were amazing as well. I'm not a huge fan of fried tomatoes but these were good. The tomatoes were not mushy. They were firm and somehow tasted fresh even though the outer coating was crunchy. This place is a real find. I might be coming by here every time I fish the Eno. The prices are very reasonable about $8-$9 per meal and the portions are very large. The restaurant is very clean and it has an upscale look with country hospitality for service. read more

Went for a later lunch on a weekday. So not at all crowded. It was a little over-priced and I thought the portions were on the smaller side. Service was slow and stoic. But the big reason I felt the need to review: I didn't care for their hush puppies. Over-cooked, greasy, and flavor less. Everyone at our table agreed. We explained and asked for more. They brought us more - and they were exactly the same. Maybe it's not a big deal to others, but I LOVE hush puppies and (to me) good ones really make a meal. Not a bad place for a meal. My wife and I stopped into Picnic for a meal before going to walk the trails at the Eno River State Park. Being a nice day we sat outside. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We really liked that they brought a large glass bottle of water with our ice waters. Since we were going to be spending the next few hours outdoors we liked that we could hydrate without running our server to death. I noticed that they keep Blenheims on hand so I ordered a whiskey and ginger beer. The drink had just the right amount of whiskey to stand up to the spice in the Blenheims. As far as the food I was a little underwhelmed. I ordered the pork plate with fried okra and baked beans. My wife wasn't all that hungry so she ordered the brisket cheese fries. They use shoestring style french fries which my wife and I both enjoy but thought wasn't the best choice for cheese fries since they aren't large enough to take cheese with them when you grab one. You had use a fork.. The brisket itself was fine though my wife didn't like it. Nothing to write home about. As far as the pork plate the pulled pork was pretty good. It automatically came with hush puppies which were fresh but not very good. The baked beans were kind of boring. The okra wasn't crispy but wasn't too soft. And the price was pretty steep. $15 bucks for a plate of BBQ is definitely at the high end on the price scale. To be fair to the food everything came out quickly and was served hot with decent portion sizes. That is a really big plus. The customers sitting on either side of us raved about the mac and cheese and the fried chicken so if I go back Picnic I'll try those. Initial impression was positive. Place looks cool inside and out. The location is interesting, right on the periphery of a neighbourhood. Not so cool was the feral child standing right next to our table whilst shrieking full-blast. Even less cool was the table of "Everything's a shade of OK" adults egging her on. Not the fault of the establishment; some people just suck! Really good beer selection. Wings were front row, big, meaty and flavourful. BBQ was the star of the evening, really outstanding! Greens were good but it seemed that they were burned at some point as the pot likker was super dark and a bit bitter. Mac and cheese was a disappointment but that's coming from a non-lover of pimento cheese. The chocolate chess pie was edible; not much going on in terms of flavour save the sweet. To the owners of Picnic, this is more geared to you. Tonight was my family's last meal at Picnic. For the last several years, we have eaten there at least once or twice a month. It's been a go to answer for 'Where should we go tonight?' But tonight, when a roach crawled out from under my son's blackened catfish, we could no longer ignore how dirty the dining room has been getting. The bug sealed your fate with us. The fact that it was still alive meant it jumped on from the holding area and didn't get cooked with the food. I didn't say anything while we were there because my kids get embarrassed too easy. But if you don't want more regulars like us leaving, I'd make some changes quick. You have good recipes, your barbecue is good, but you're too expensive to have a dirty dining room and obviously a dirty kitchen too. Sorry for the bad news. read more

We came here for the famous whole hog BBQ, and I've got to say, that wasn't the most impressive part by any means (that's bad and good). I ended up with the crispy trotter, and that was spectacular. The sides were just excellent, if maybe over the top rich in a couple cases (like the mac and cheese). My wife had the BBQ though, and I've got to say after visiting nearly every top notch BBQ place in NC over the past 25 years, it wouldn't rate in my top 10. Maybe we just caught them on an off day. We weren't drinking, but the beer list was very well done. The service was excellent, if a bit "hipster" :) It's out of the way for us, so I don't know how often we'll go back, but it was at least 3.5 star good. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of Brew and Q in Cary, which is as good, maybe even better, on sides, meat and beer selections. They could be siblings! read more

It seems like I have been on a bit of a BBQ kick lately visiting the various places in the area offering up their versions of this Southern, and in particular NC staple. My latest journey took me out to North Durham to give Picnic a try. Their building pretty small as is small as is the parking lot. They were pretty jammed on a Saturday evening. After glancing at the menu I knew I wanted their BBQ, but the buttermilk fried chicken looked enticing as well, so I eventually decided to go with the chicken and BBQ combo.(Might have been the priciest item on the menu at $18+ but that is how I roll). The dish came with two sides and I chose the dill potato salad and the collards. The BBQ was solid. Not the best but A-OK. Adding some vinegar sauce assisted with alleviating the dryness and enhancing the flavor. The buttermilk fried chicken was excellent and trumped the BBQ in my opinion. Next time, I would be tempted to just order the chicken. The potato salad didn't have a wow factor (a little bland). I probably wouldn't get that side again. The collards however were great. They had a bit of spice and bursting with flavor. As I mentioned Picnic was fully booked on the night I went, but service was still prompt and friendly. They seemed to be well staffed to handle the crowd. This place is very loud and the tables are very close together so I wouldn't say Picnic is "quaint" or anything (For a less noisy experience eating outside on their PICNIC tables could be a good option). Picnic wasn't a high fours stars for me (more like 3+ 4- line). I liked some aspects more than others, but I do think it is a new spot out from the main part of the city worth trying. read more

Picnic is a venture between long time pig smoker Wyatt Dickson, local pig farmer Ryan Butler and former Piedmont chef Ben Adams. It is located a few miles away from the downtown area up Cole Mill road. Parking was problematic but in the evenings you are (normally) allowed to park at the Masonic lodge across the street. Once you get inside it is a bit of a mix of a classic bbq place with a Durham hipster flair. There is thankfully a bar area where you can wait for a table. They sport a very well chosen beer selection and an assortment of house cocktails. The menu is not big, their focus is clear. We started with a devil egged appetizer (which only comes with one egg/two halves btw), and it was very good. The eggs were pickled which surprised me but it was a delicious deviled egg. For my meal I had to get the pulled pork, obviously this is intended to be the main focus of their restaurant. I got the plate with collard greens and sweet potato puree (and hush puppies). The pork was good, I don't know if I would say it is better than my personal Durham favorite backyard BBQ but certainly good. I really liked their signature "Pig Whistlin" sauce, once I added it on it was fantastic pulled pork. The collard greens and sweet potato puree were also quite good (though again, Luna probably still has my favorite collards). My friend got the fried chicken with potato salad and macaroni. Considering this place specializes in pork, their fried chicken was legit and very good. I also loved their tangy, mustard based potato salad and the macaroni and cheese was strong. As others have mentioned the hush puppies are very different from a standard hush puppie which caught me off guard, but once I accepted that I did appreciate that they were a very good unique take. I liked this place, it impressed me more than the Pit did. I'm a fan of Backyard BBQ and I can't quite say this place was better, but in terms of restaurant experience it definitely was. If I was taking guests to try North Carolina BBQ, then I think this is definitely the place. read more

Tried picnic for the first time last night, and was not disappointed! Did some research before going and was excited to see the Chef practices whole hog cooking! Since it was my first time I tried the regular pulled pork plate, it was done right! The meat was moist, tender and had a nice smoke flavor that wasn't over baring, could eat without BBQ sauce, but since the chef makes and bottles his own sauce I had to try it too. The sides had just as much flavor as the pork, Mac n cheese and collards were simply made but strong in flavor, which for me is preferred when the star is the smoked hog! We finally got to try it out. Went opening night and the wait was insane so we gave up. Tonight, it was only 30 minutes at 530pm...so.. We're glad we waited. Overall, the experience was a good one. So, the one thing you must get about Picnic is they are still figuring out their supply chain. I wanted deviled eggs and they were out for some reason. We ended up foregoing apps because I wasn't feeling anything else and I wanted a combo plate for dinner. I ordered the pork and fried chicken combo with a side of collards and potato salad. My wife had the pork plate with sweet potato fluff and greens. Both dishes came with coleslaw and the little one got a grilled cheese and Mac and cheese. The sides. Just ok except for the sweet potato which was topped with nuts of some kind. The slaw seemed like an afterthought. It was bland and finely chopped which I'm not used too. I'm not a fan. The greens were okay. Nothing special. Being the greens aficionado that I am, I'm very tough on evaluating other greens dishes. I added the pepper sauce and finished my side, so, there's that. The potato salad was not a favorite either. I'm used to no skin, cold, not room temp and onions and celery. This may just be because I'm from the north and that's how potato salad is made south of the Mason Dixon, but I don't see myself ordering it again. The mac and cheese was...basic. Not bad, not great, just... The clear winner in the sides category was the sweet potato fluff. Outstanding. Dare I say, like my family makes on Turkey Day. Get that, get that in your mouth! On to the main dishes. The pork. So, standing in line watching them pull the pork out of the pig made my mouth water like any good pig pickin. It's served "naked" without sauce. Now, here's were the nerves set in. I'm a tomato based sauce man, not a vinegar one. Their sauce is vinegar based with honey. So, I had some choice to make. Eat it dry or try the vinegar sauce. I opted to try the sauce and like it. The pork itself was juicy, succulent and seemingly well seasoned. Maybe they inject? The sauce brought out the flavor and I was pleased. The star of the show was, unexpectedly, the fried chicken. On a whim, I order the combo plate because it just looked really good! Once we tasted it, out thoughts were confirmed. Now, two things happened here that are notable. 1) My wife had to be stopped from eating too much of my chicken and 2) She ate the skin, which she never does! They've got something special here with this chicken. Don't change the seasoning recipe, it's a winner! Now, onto the suggestions... 1) Add the choice of dark meat. I prefer a good leg and thigh. 2) Do better with the slaw. Needs a better recipe. 3) Add some kale and turnips to the greens. The bacon is nice, but it needs more flavor. 4) Add more variety of cheese to the mac. Easy fix? I won't complain about the space except for the lack of waiting room. Not sure why the heaters outside were off but it's difficult to find a space to stand while waiting and with hour+ waits, you need a better solution.
