My husband recently decided to go Paleo, so we went to the mothership. Apparently, they were featured on a Paleo hype movie/documentary he watched. We went on a Saturday evening around 6:15 PM and we're seated immediately. Our waitress was super sweet and friendly and seemed genuinely excited about their offerings. This is obviously the kind of restaurant that you go to if you have a lot of dietary restrictions and/or have a friend group with a lot of dietary restrictions. Otherwise, the "real thing" would be better. We started off with brussels sprouts and they were delicious. The bacon was crispy and the glaze just the right amount. And we also got the cashew queso. Again, it was good for cashew queso, but real cheese would have been much tastier. My husband got some tacos And while he thought they were pretty good, there was no comparison to a real taco that actually has cheese on it. And I got the chicken fried chicken. Good for what it was. But the potatoes that came with it were actually delicious. We got the chocolate pudding for dessert and I didn't like it at all. But, of course, I eat real sugar so it wasn't sweet enough for me. My husband didn't finish it, which says some thing because we both have a huge sweet tooth. But he thought it was OK he said. I would go back to support my husband or any friends that have dietary restrictions. If I were by myself, I would probably just choose regular food. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Picnik yet. This place is a go-to for us for a reason. Health/allergy stuff aside, the food is delicious. They do not shy away from real butter and fats so everything I've tried has been superb. Now, I'm a pescatarian so I haven't tried the whole menu but what keeps me popping in a few times a month is their coffee/tea lattes. I've tried a bunch and they're all superb. When tou order, you can order V1, V2, or V3. V1 is grass-fed butter and whey protein. V2 is coconut milk and collagen. V3 is vegan (but I forgot the actual ingredients in thay version. My favorite is the chai. The reason we often taken out-of-Towners here is that it's so easy to accommodate food allergies and special diets without sacrificing flavor. Plus, the staff is really knowledgeable about allergies and diets. I remember one time having a meal with someone who had a gluten allergy, another who had a soy allergy, one who was keto, and myself who's pescatarian - we all ate well and enjoyed our meals. I REALLY REALLY enjoyed this place. Picture the blend of hippies who have a passion for well-being food and nice basic Caucasian people who have a love for brunch and decoration. That is how I imagine picnik was born Everyone is super friendly and helpful, and all of the dishes and coffee are unique and locally produced, giving that real sense of community. I really liked the espresso bar in the front and all of the products they sell in that corner, because it is truly only able to be found online otherwise. The powder they sell is something I would definitely like to try to add to my beverages! As for the brunch itself, I order guac&chips, caramel banana pancake, and meat lovers breakfast taco. Something noteworthy of all of these plates is that the portion is larger than your average restaurant, making it worth to pay a little bit of a heftier price tag. Not only that, but even the food itself was just amazing. The recipes they use must be super secret but I WANT IT because everything was absolutely delicious! Stopped here for breakfast while visiting Austin for the SXSW music festival. It's great to find an all organic restaurant with a low glycemic menu for my son, who has Type 1 diabetes and has to really watch his diet. The mocha latte was amazing with mct oil, real cacao, maple syrup, and whey protein. it was delicious!! My son had harvest hash with sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and spinach with poached eggs. He also had a drink of beef bone broth with grass fed butter, ginger, and cayenne pepper. All healthy. The hostess was so sweet and greeted us with a smile. We had maybe a 15 minute wait and then we were seated at a nice table on the patio. A beautiful day in Austin with great weather. Our server was great and attentive. Weekday lunch for a birthday celebration. We had a really good time with some great food. We ordered texas wagyu steak, salmon and their queso. We weren't such a big fan of the vegan queso but the other two dishes were great. Steak cut was slightly chewy and fatty than we like but the sides were amazing and the chimichurri cut through the fat. Their mushroom and potatoe with onion and chorizo were on point. The mix of flavors and textures were amazing. It got both chewy and crunchy. I actually couldn't get enough of their potatoe. Their salmon has this amazing crispy skin. Served with rice and broccolini that added balance to the dish. For drinks we got golden milk and Mayan mocha. I highly recommend the Mayan mocha. I never heard about butter based mocha but they got it here. I got 16 oz which you think would be enough but really I wish I can have a bathtub full of it. This drink is almost like hot chocolate on steroid. You can taste the coffee slightly but the chocolate was front and center. It coat your throat going down and give you this warm cozy feeling. It make me want to curl up with a blanket and just read a book. Service was AMAZING. I highly appreciate all the staff there. Everyone was great and attentive. We also got a free dessert (blondie a la mode) on the house when I mentioned it was my friend's birthday. The dessert was a great choice on their part. We just asked them to pick something for us. Their blondies were decadent with good amount of chocolate chips topped with vanilla bean ice cream, cocoa nibs and bacon. You can not go wrong with those combo. The best was they did not skim on the bacon. It really added that extra oomph. Nicky, our server, was friendly and knowledgeable. She made us felt like we were hanging out with another friend. I have been to Picnik a few times since my last review and wanted to give an update. I wanted to try Picnik out several more times and give a fair chance. Unfortunately after today's order, I don't think I will be returning to Picnik. While the food is good and I'm still very thankful that there is a gluten free restaurant like Picnik, unfortunately the pricing/portions has just become such a deal breaker for me. I've attached a photo of the French Toast below. I use to be such a fan of Picnik's French Toast before quarantine. I wish I had a 'before' picture, but it has been significantly cut down in size. * If you want to see what it use to look like, look at the French toast pictures on Yelp from a year ago. It is tiny and does not serve as a sufficient meal. This morning, we also got two tacos (which are $7 for each small taco + now the cassava flour tortillas are an extra charge if you don't want corn). And while they were good, it definitely didn't feel like enough food/substance for a $50 breakfast. It's been disappointing that Picnik has changed the portion sizes of almost everything I've tried in the past few months. As I mentioned in my previous review, I am willing to pay for quality, gluten free dishes, however, the portions are just not acceptable or okay. If Picnik brought back their original portion sizes, I would definitely feel confident giving them a five star as I love their menu, service, and delicious food. Picnik is a trendy, modern, and very vibrant restaurant, serving an array of delicious food items and bar menu items. I had parked in the back since parking was very limited in the storefront. Once parked, I walked through the back entrance and headed towards the front to be seated. I was there on a Saturday afternoon on a lovely sunny day so the restaurant was packed. The hostess said the wait was about 25 minutes but it was actually less than 15. During my wait, I was able to order a Maple Pecan Old Fashioned drink from the bar. Being a person who enjoys Old Fashions, this drink was well balanced with sweetness and the bite from the whiskey. The sweet maple syrup really cuts into that smoky, malty taste characteristic of whiskey. Picnik's take on Old Fashions is great for someone who wants a cocktail that is on the sweeter end and won't give you that infamous 'look' when you take a shot of alcohol. After I got seated to the table, I didn't get addressed by the waiter until about 5 minutes later. When the waiter came around, I ordered the following items: -Crispy Brussels Sprouts w/ Parmesan & Bacon -Pan-Seared Salmon The wait for my items was about 20 minutes, with the Brussel sprouts coming out first and then the salmon. I LOVE brussels sprouts and what I found quite cool about Picnik was that their menu has a wide variety of dishes that incorporates them. This appetizer dish I ordered was a great starter and was full of flavor. As the name implies, it was indeed crispy and well seasoned all around with the bacon fat. The parmesan cheese was a nice topping but to be honest, I didn't really taste much of it. The seared salmon was a very delightful lunch dish that had multiple flavor profiles on just one dish. The light flakiness from the salmon was cooked perfectly and there was not a single moment where I thought any part of it was dry. The plate had a bed of herb tahini cauliflower and spiced garbanzo in a sweet and savory light sauce with a few whole blueberries sprinkled around. The flavors mesh very well together to create a healthy and easy eating experience that won't make you hate yourself afterward. I wholeheartedly really enjoyed my lunch here at Picnik and without a doubt will return to try the other cocktails and dishes. read more

We came here with a brunch reservation and were excited to try it for the first time! Upon arriving the staff was very friendly and the restaurant was decorated very modern and airy. It was cute and welcoming, which had me excited to try the food! Unfortunately, once I checked out the menu I was disappointed. The prices for coffee, which was not espresso based at this location, were unusually high, and upon tasting the drip, maple pumpkin, and chai, I was not impressed by the flavor. The food was also priced quite high. I decided to get the French toast. I understand the premise for the restaurant is health, farm to table, fresh ingredients, however, the flavor was just unfortunately lacking. There did not seem to be any egg in the baste for the French toast and overall, just seemed like toast. We came here for brunch on a Saturday. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I'm really glad I did. We walk in and it's very open, airy, bright. It's pretty big. We got in the front section. They have a back section and an outdoor section (I think). Anyhow, our waitress greeted us right away. Since were new to this place she explained everything especially the drinks. Didn't know but these guys are known for their drinks. Butter coffee. Butter matcha. Didn't know it existed but so curious I just had to try. I started off with their golden milk matcha. Green tea, butter, ginger, turmeric, and a bunch of other stuff. I'm telling you this was so good. It's very smooth. Really recommend this. So I had the harvest hash. All I know is that it had sweet potatoes,Brussel sprouts. and sausage. Very good. Really like it a lot. My wife got the salted Carmel banana pancakes. They tasted just like banana bread with all the yummy Carmel and fresh syrup. So good. She liked it and I liked it too. Our waitress was very good too. Very patient. She really knew her menu and explained a lot to us. Checking on us and filling our water cups. So overall, loved this place. Really unimpressed with this place. Overpriced and all around strange vibes. The service missed the mark. Servers couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the tables because they was too busy massaging each other and saying things like "I will kill everyone for you." (You really can't make this stuff up) Might I add that the server station was *maybe* 2 inches behind me so I had the pleasure of being right next to this weirdness, whether I liked it or not. We love this spot because I can eat anything here and it is deliciousI am supposed to eat gluten free and this restaurant has done a great job providing tasty options that are free of many of the items that cause people allergies. I'm not into specialty diet-focused restaurants, so when my mom (who follows the auto-immune-protocol) chose this restaurant, I had my doubts. But boy was I wrong. I ordered the harvest hash (the non-AIP one - I did confirm with the server I was ordering the correct one as well). It was one of the best hashes I've had. Everything was well-seasoned, from the beef sausage to the roasted sweet potato. The sweet maple vinaigrette brought all the components together. Bonus round: I got a few bites of the chicken fried chicken from my dad. Two thumbs up! Ultra tender and flavorful. Piknik is definitely a picnic for those with specialty diets in their family. Will come back next time the family goes to Austin. Only real suggestion is for them to angle their fans in the outdoor seating so the right-back seating can have a little more air-flow. read more

This place is a great gem for health/local food conscious eaters. Overall, the food was tasty and service was good! We ordered the salted caramel banana pancakes that had walnuts and caramel sauce and it tastes like banana bread (which I loved). We also ordered the smoked salmon toast which was pretty standard, and then the pesto and goat cheese scramble- nice creamy consistency in the omelette but the pesto could have had a tad more zing to it. I also really recommend their butter coffee! I had the cappuccino and my friend got the vanilla latte! They were both creamy and delicious . We only waited about 15-20 minutes for a Saturday 11am brunch. And the architecture of the restaurant had a light wood and white theme which gave me California vibes! read more

They charge you for extra chips which is blah hate that but I get that it's expensive. Second time I went I've been on AIP, and they have a menu for me!!!!! I want to cry. The atmosphere is lovely. I am unable to review the food. The server assigned to my table seemed unwilling or unable to consider modifications. For example, coffee with coconut milk was not available. I could only have that as a latte. And working with food restrictions became insurmountable... I have an avocado allergy - an epipen worthy allergy, not preference. Picnik uses avocado oil (exclusively?) and will not accommodate the allergy, claiming "cross contamination," which is the term for bacterial management. (Cross contact is what occurs with food proteins that survive cooking preparation.) The suggestion was that the avocado proteins from the cooking oil become airborne and they cannot prepare anything separately from the airborne avocado proteins - which I assume means I was sitting in a soup of avocado air and everything delivered to the table was wafting avocado particulates at me. So, I couldn't even order toast... The manager (who we had to seek out) suggested that the situation was regrettable, but really my fault, and that I should have called ahead. I found this view super weird because (1) blaming the customer is not my "go to;" (2) I travel extensively, nationally and internationally, eating at any number of restaurants and have NEVER had this issue before; and (3) Picnik seems to be pretty proud of its inclusive dietary offerings... I guess I stumbled across the limits of the inclusion. I pondered how I might have handled this differently if I were in their shoes. I think I would have gone to additional lengths to provide an alternative - even if I had to buy it somewhere else due to the avocado air. Also, we were a party of 7. I would have tried to make it easier to opt-out. By the time I was told I couldn't order anything, everyone (most notably the children ) had ordered and were waiting for their meals. For sure, if I were going "all in" on avocado oil, I would educate myself on the way it works and whether I am creating an impenetrable avocado miasma or if those proteins are broken down when heated... I will be researching this myself to avoid possible exposure by avocado fog. (The rights to the term "avocado fog" and possible horror movie concept and/or band name are reserved.) They were kind enough to comp part of the brunch, which I appreciated. This was a truly weird (and hungry!) end to my Austin visit. Godspeed, Picnik! I would promote Picnik even if their food wasn't blow-you-away, because there are so few places that really care about nutrition (e.g. using Avocado oil vs traditional vegetable oil), but with Picnik you get the best of all worlds: great service, fun ambiance, and amazing, clean food. The fish tacos were great, and so was the Thai Red Curry. Can't wait to come back and try more. Also, their menu states that their Blondie brownie (on its own, or as an ice cream sandwich) is the world's best Blondie. This is not a "World's Best Cup of Coffee" situation (see: "Elf"). This place had some of the best chicken tenders I've ever ordered! They were tempura style and done perfectly. Highly recommend ordering that, it was definitely the highlight of the meal. I also got a matcha late, and it was pretty good, but they add sweeter (maple syrup I think?) and I personally prefer my matcha lattes without additional sweetness. Service was stellar as well. Picnik..ok..cute pretty place. Ample parking in the rear. Came for a ladies bday lunch. Wanted to try this place for awhile. Everything is tasty but I think it's way overpriced. Esp for the portion of food you actually get. I did like their Brussels sprouts app and vegan queso was delish. I enjoyed my fish taco which came late bc they forgot my order. Every one else's came already and they were almost done before mine came out. They did comp our 2 desserts though because of this which we appreciated. Now my fish tacos was tasty but small. No sides. Comes in 2. If priced under $10 it would be ok but my friend split hers and it was wee light lunch lol I did like the ice cream sandwich. That was good. The key lime was tart. All the dishes we got looked good. Shrimp curry, shrimp salad, veggie hash..tasty.. Just way overpriced so can't justify giving 4 stars when so many other places around here taste just as good and give a tiny bit more quality and portions. This is kind of frustrating for those of us who want a completely GF environment and need that certainty. Picnik is that. They have no gluten on site. The food is healthy, consistent and yummy. What a sweet place! We got a reservation for 2 on a Sunday for 12:45pm. Kind and friendly service, food and drinks came out quick and picture perfect. We enjoyed a Sunday brunch starting with cocktails - a Picnik Mule (not too sweet) and Southern Charm (classic , so easy to drink). I appreciated the swap-outs like that we could get crudites (raw veggies) for the vegan cashew queso dip instead of chips. Also as a non-dairy person, THE CASHEW QUESO WAS AMAZING. We could have eaten it with a spoon. I got the fried chicken and pancake, my dining partner got some a la carte options- three poached eggs and a side of bacon. The pancake was perfect and less stuffing than the traditional fried chicken and waffle that you usually see at a brunch spot. My poached eggs were textbook perfect.
