I stopped here on my way back from a trip out of town because it had been recommended to me. It's attached to Pitfire Pizza. It's such a cute little semi speak-easy bar. Their cocktail menu was really great and the bartender (I'm terrible with names) was very accommodating to my indecisive nature. I had 2 drinks and both were super yummy! Went to the bar on Friday night with some friends & sat at the Bar - WORST experience I've had anywhere in a long time. Cade, the Bartender, was rude & went out of his to ignore us because we were Gay. After finally taking our drink orders, he never once came back to us after the bar-back delivered the drinks and we were there for almost one hour. We also ordered two pizzas which were ok, not great. Overall it was a HORRIBLE experience, we will NEVER go back there, ever. Walked in here to try it out for a friends 26th birthday.I did not know it was craft beer only. When I ordered 2 Coors lights,it is as if the music stopped, the bartender gave me a dirty look and said "This is a Craft Beer Only establishment". I asked for 2 light beers on TAP for my wife and myself. The beer tasted like dirt because the taps weren't clean and he served it full of foam(head). Then when I was asked if I was gonna keep my tab open and I answered no, he said, "Well are you gonna be one of those people that closes their tab and opens it again later because I don't have time for that" I have worked in restaurants and bars and the taps being dirty and serving up foam isn't good for business at all after a while so they should at least address that. 2 light draft beers=$28. No Thank you! Lol. I really dont care how great you think it is to craft your own beer. I've had better at similar establishments like Bootleggers or others like it. read more

I guess the word is out because this 'speakeasy' gets crowded! Pie Society has a moody lounge look and feel with delicious handcrafted, classic cocktails. They have an abridged menu of pizzas and appetizers from Pitfire. Everything I've had to eat and drink was delicious. BUT, I WANT TO LIKE THIS PLACE MORE. It's just too crowded and didn't have enough seating or table perches (on a Friday night). The music that played both times I've been was rap and electronic and it was way too loud. I love rap, but it was so out of place in this hipster-like lounge. It really put a damper on the experience. 4- stars for the food and beverage and hoping they fix the ambiance. read more

Popped into Pie Society around 10pm on a Wednesday night. The place was hoppin' but there were enough seats to grab a high table. The waiter/server was super friendly, found us, brought us menus right away. The bartender came and found us a good minute later, got our orders, and whipped up our drinks quickly and deftly. The waiter came by later to see if we needed anything and, as it turns out, you can order pizza in the bar/speakeasy...so we did! Pizza was tasty, the price was good ($12.50). The drinks were good, liked the atmosphere, the cocktails are a fair price (~$12 per). Not the best drinks I've ever had but they'll do in a pinch. First he asked my friends why they were wearing their masks, which was not really his business. Then I ordered two drinks and he asked me why I was ordering two drinks. If you like calm, quiet bars with craft cocktails, come here on a Wednesday night. Although the seating is limited, we had no trouble finding a prime seat at the bar. There was no blaring music or people talking over each other, and it was nice to be able to enjoy our drinks in peace. The bartender Manny was friendly and easy-going, and was attentive throughout. The drinks we tried were the Tres Brooklyn (bourbon, apricot, vermouth, cherry wine, pickled peach) and the Georgia Mint Julep (bourbon, peach, brandy, sugar, mint). I really liked the Brooklyn, although I couldn't find any hint of the pickled peach anywhere - arguably the most intriguing element of the cocktail. The julep was okay, but I thought it had an overpowering sweetness to it that was kind of off-putting. Prices are pretty standard - around $11-13 range. Their happy hour ends at 8PM. read more

I have to be honest. When my bf said we were going for drinks at Pie Society I thought, "Why the hell is he taking me to a pizza joint for cocktails? We should just go home and drink." Like, I kinda was annoyed. We pulled up and it looked like a pizza joint. The annoyance was really starting to set in. Then, we parked and walked through what looked like the back of the pizza joint into a bar. Whuuutttt?! A speakeasy? Hell yea! We were able to sit at the bar and were immediately helped by the bartender. I can't think of her name but both times we've gone she's there and she's dope. They have a pretty legit cocktail menu but try a Dealer's Choice and let her make something for you. This is what we normally do and she doesn't disappoint. It really does seem like she's making her own concoctions. ~sidebar~ I hate when I go places and ask for Dealer's Choice and they make me something that's not different, it's just not on their menu. Like, don't make me an Aviator but charge me extra for Dealer's Choice. End of Rant. The music selection here is dope and you can order food too. In fact, try the bread sticks when you're there. They are so good. The prices are reasonable too so you won't pay Gaslamp/Downtown prices for cocktails. This is, for sure, my new spot for hand crafted cocktails. read more

Tried this speak easy with some friends to be adventurous. Big mistake with doing that. Bartender, apparently Josh, was rude from the start. Looked at a credit card thinking it was an ID? Questioned why my girlfriend was buying two drinks and then questioned why she was buying mine once she told him it was for me. Questioned why we were wearing masks which is none of his business, but I'll let you know now it's because an immediate family member has health issues and doesn't need Covid from your frat boy ***. Regardless, my drink was good actually good, but the Pinã Colada my girlfriend got was pure pineapple juice. Place seems cool and the other bartender seemed nice but if you want a disappointing drink and a sub-par bartender with no social skills and a frat-house mentality then by all means stop by. read more

My Gf took me here for Valentines. We both loveD the atmosphere as well as the drinks and pizza. You can order from the kitchen but you're limited to a reduced menu. However there's still plenty of options and we both got pizza with apps. As of now this is my top 3 speakeasy. Pie Society reminds me of a beautiful woman. She is easy on the eyes, and everywhere she goes people are waiting in line to get a chance to talk to her. This creates a competitive environment everywhere she goes, and despite all the attention, she's probably a little bit sad inside because it's next to impossible to ever really connect with her. From start to finish, my entire experience at Pie Society tracked this metaphor. I wanted to get to know Pie Society, spend time with her, see what she had to offer more than just her looks. But I never got the chance. We had to wait to get in line to get in, and then had to fight off the other suitors just for the chance to enjoy what she had to offer. The cocktails here are fantastic. Problem is, you're fighting off everyone else to try to get the bartender to make you one. That's the crux of the identity crisis here: You want people to frequent your establishment, but if you can't serve up the product you are offering in a timely manner, then the whole experience is moot. Although Pie Society is a gorgeous creature- to me it's simply not worth the baggage. If really want to experience it, I'd recommend coming on a weeknight with a group of friends to avoid the weekend rush and actually give yourself a chance with some one-on-one time. 3 Stars. read more

I didnt even know there was a speakeasy inside of the pizza place, but wallah I made a cool discovery. I came here on a Friday night and although there was no line outside to get in , the inside is VERY intimate, so I was bumping shoulders with everyone. There was also limited seating, so you just have to stand wherever there is room. There was only 2 bartenders total that night so it took forever to get drinks. But they do make some good drinks. I would definitely like to try this place out when it's not so busy. Maybe it's better on weekdays. read more

I was not expecting a response or anything to come out of my review so I was shocked to see a private message within 24 hours. Cody was extremely nice and was empathetic to all the events (or lack thereof) that took place the night we went in. Hidden in the rear, no signs, just a wooden door that leads to this absolutely intimate speakeasy. Tired of the loud music, arrogant shmucks, and crappy drinks at your average bar? Come here and enjoy a nice relaxing time with good company, and an awesome cocktail. Even on a busy night, I am in awe at how much craft goes into creating each drink. They make sure they add just the right amount of each ingredient, crack the ice to give just the right texture, shake or stir the drink accordingly, and add the right fruit peel in just the right manner. Not planned, a handful of us came here on Pie Day Eve! Snagged seating on the couch, ordered a pizza from Pitfire, cocktails, then once 8pm rolled around, we ordered food from Pie Society. Overall, a great experience. Pizza was good, cocktails were made well, decently priced food and drinks. Good vibes and music. Our server was friendly and sweet, recommended some good drinks. Deviled eggs were okay. Tater tots were amazing! The music got way turned up sometime between 8pm and 10pm because I couldn't hear anyone else in my group except for the person sitting next to my ear. Way loud, made for poor conversation. The bald-headed bartender has lost me as a patron to Pie Society (and Pit Fire). Last time he refused to serve me water (after ordering 2-3 drinks). This evening (after waiting 30 minutes to get in), he didn't like the drink I ordered and walked away from me mid-order without saying a word. As a frequent patron of Pie Society (and Pit Fire), I am offended. My husband and I live in the neighborhood and up until tonight we loved enjoying a drink at Pie Society, and pizza at Pit Fire. I am sad to say that the bartender's repeated rude behavior has lost our business to both establishments. One positive thing I would like to say is that the female server inside Pie Society is fantastic. She is friendly, attentive and they couldn't have hired a better server. A great place to grab some drinks and chill. A not so secret speakeasy in my opinion. Got in on a Saturday night around 8:20 pm with no reservations or anything. I got the rum punch ($12) and it was delicious! You can really taste the cardamom. Also the tartness of the lime and pineapple give it a great flavor! I was a little thrown off by the cardamom but one or two sips in the flavors all mesh together perfectly. The edible flowers were also a very nice touch! Didn't really like the taste but it was so darn cute aha The pizza smelled awesome! Too bad we had already ate before coming here. Service - awesome! Was able to check this place out last Friday around 11p. We walked in without issue, there was no line and once inside was able to easily grab a drink and find a seat on one of their couches. Space is very small, has a cozy den like feel; you feel like you are in your father's private drinking room. They have a few tables scattered and a couch that can sit about four people. Outside patio also has a few tables and allows smoking. The bartenders and drinks are legit. Costa Mesa has needed a place like this for a long time. . . now I don't have to drive all the way to Santa Ana to get a solid cocktail. They have a list of pre-crafted drinks, or you can talk to the bartender (as I did) and describe what you like, and they will put something together for you. Others have complained about the time it takes to get a drink . . . however, if you are coming to an establishment like this, the purpose is to enjoy your company and enjoy the work that went into the drink; they aren't just serving up vodka sodas. They do have small bites, but we didn't try any. Looking forward to going back and trying more drinks. read more

You should come here. That's the deal. If you're trying to find somewhere cool and intimate to hang out on a weeknight with a small group of people, between the cocktails (!!!!!), the snacks and the non-alcoholic drink list, I can't imagine a better place. Stressed out about the wait? Don't come on the weekend. We went on a Tuesday night around 10pm, and it was very quiet -- we always had the bartender's attention when we wanted it, and were left alone when we wanted to be alone. Conversation was at murmur level all night. The drinks take time to make and they should take time to savor; come during off hours to get the most out of the bar. It's not a place to come get hammered slash rowdy. There are lots of good bars for that in Orange County; maybe go to Goat Hill Tavern down the road? I don't know that I've been more impressed with a bar in Orange County. It's a serious craft cocktail bar and, like all really great classic cocktail bars, is both innovative and purist. Here's the innovative part. We had the Poolside: refreshing and crisp -- Ford's gin and sloe gin sweet and a little floral against the watermelon; the Medicine Rattle (tequila, pineapple, jalapeno simple syrup, green tea, sake -- a bunch of ingredients that shouldn't have made sense together yet combined to create one of the most heart-stopping cocktails I've ever had; and, on the recommendation of our bartender Brittney, a Czech Mate (like a gin fizz with Becherovka; I'd never had one and it was a perfect recommendation). The drinks were sub-fucking-lime. I lived in Boston for a few years and would periodically take the bus to New York just to get drinks at Pego Club because it's my spirit-animal bar. The Medicine Rattle was as good as anything I've had there. And the purist part: The only word you can use to describe this bar is ATTENTIVE. That's its whole ethos. The bartenders make everything step by step and do it right: egg whites separated in front of you, thoughtful ingredient selection (the cost of the drink is enough that the bartenders have the luxury of thinking about WHICH gin will best complement the other ingredients, etc., instead of making compromises for pour cost), appropriate glassware for relatively esoteric classic cocktails. For me, the bar was best summed up by watching Brittney garnish drinks all evening: every drink had its own demands -- which garnishes, the shapes they were cut in, their size, the expression of the citrus oils, their placement on the glass. Everything was right. Everything was necessary. Everything was heaven. Aside from the house cocktails, amazing selection of classic cocktails. Bucks with housemade ginger! Fizzes and sours and maids! Savoy heaven. Food: We ordered the pastrami peanuts, which came out warm and spicy, served in a glass jelly jar just like grandma used to use for her plum preserves. I would never not order these peanuts. Also: tater tot chorizo fondue: crispy parmesan crusted tater tots, with super-rich chorizo and a pretty traditional tasting fondue cheese (I think there was even kirsch in it? But don't quote me). The bar snacks were hefty portions at a very reasonable price, and attentive to flavor the way you'd expect at a place that makes cocktails like these. One other note: this is one of the few bars I've been to that I think you could leave very satisfied even as designated driver. They have a great number of house-made cordials; I wanted to order everything off of their soda menu! House ginger beer, lime soda, spicy soda -- the list goes on. Just come here, okay? So after hearing that the bar is located hidden in the back of the pizza restaurant, I tried my damndest to not look like a lost fool as I scanned the back for (presumably) an unmarked door in the hallway near the restroom that would lead into the Pie Society bar. Luckily for me and my group, as I led them blindly to a demonstration kitchen in the back, the bartender emerged from an unmarked door to the stock room and looked at us for a moment. We were the first to arrive--right at 5pm--which was the time Pie Society opened on a Friday. The fact that we came looking like we just came off of work (because we did), might have thrown him off guard and probably made him think we were more like health inspectors, rather than customers. We had a bit of a staredown for a second, as I quickly scanned through my brain for the most appropriate thing to say without sounding like a newbie. Knowing the answer already, I asked, "Are you guys just opening the bar? Are we the first group for the night?" This was to illicit a certain answer and to show him that we were customers, and not managers or health inspectors. The bartender then said, "Yes, we just opened. Go on inside." He then gestured and held open the unmarked door that I was desperately looking for that led to the lounge room/bar. As my friends and I sat at the bar, we just started ordering various things, based off recommendations by Aaron, the bartender. All his recommendations and concoctions were great and on point. I went to my litmus test of an Old Fashioned, to test his ability, and I was pretty impressed. Primarily because I was doing a lot of talking and catching up with friends, the drinks and the food we ordered seemed to come and go fast. The lounge itself is intimate and cozy, with dimmed lighting, several couches along the wall, and about a dozen seats at the bar. There are a couple taller cocktail tables in the middle of the room, for those who love standing, or, realistically, can't find a seat. Thankfully, since we did start early, we found seating and didn't have to compete with others for real estate as the night wore on. There seemed to be a limited number of seats outside in the patio/alternate entrance, but because actual tableside service could be limited during peak hours I'd imagine, having a spot near the bar is optimal. I'm reminded of that popular German phrase, in particular, here: "Die beste Platz ist immer an die Theke." read more

If you're using google maps to get to this place.. It'll lead you to the plaza where jack in the jack in the box is. DONT GO IN THERE. Pie society is located right behind Pitfire, which is located before the jack in the box plaza, if coming from the 55 fwy on Newport Beach. I was here on a sat night and it was pretty packed. No line. No cover. It's also a small place. Drinks were made very well and quick. Waitress did a GREAT job coming around to our table. What I didn't enjoy about this place was what I ordered as food. I had the Tater Tots in Chorizo Fondue, Pork belly, and red wine fried chicken. Prices were between 6$-8$. I wasn't impressed with any of them.. It sounded amazeballs in the menu, but it wasn't my cup of tea. The tater tots were the best out of the three. The red wine chicken was VERY interesting.. It tasted like craisins to me hahah.. So, it was sweet. The pork belly was dry. It had pineapples in it that somewhat helped, but I still wasn't impressed. It was all worth a try though being that it's my first time here. read more

I've had many drinks here and quite a few food items. Had apps from when they first opened when food was done by the superba snack bar people. Enjoyed that variety to now when they go straight from the pitfire menu. nonetheless the pitfire food is good. you're really coming here for the drinks. good variety and each are $12-$14. They even have PBR if you are a hipster. service here is hit or miss. sometimes it takes a long time to get a drink and the bartender or server forgets about you. but when service is on point this place is a real good time. read more

Initially, I was very disappointed with my visit. I sat down with a friend at the bar and we sat and waited for help for a few minutes because the male bartender was standing behind the bar on his phone and was too busy to help us. Finally, we were kindly greeted by a younger girl, I believe her name was Stacey, and she was full of great recommendations and we loved everything she suggested. We were recommended this bar because a friend suggested the Fernet Menta that they carried, although when we asked for it, it was out of stock. Stacey was very kind and offered us a free pizza to make up for the shortage, which we are so thankful for because we didn't realize this bar had such an incredible pizza restaurant attached. read more

Our group met a couple of local folk and we laughed our asses of playing Cards Against Humanity. This bar is hard to find and that's the way the owners designed it. I want to learn how they make their dough for pizza and pasta. On a good day, it's like what you would imagine a Top Chef Master known for their pasta would make. The baked mac & cheese is all the much better solely b/c of the jumbo orecchiette pasta. All happy hour dishes are $5 - pizza comes in either 9.5" cheese or pepperoni which = good as* deal. The dough isn't consistent but when it's good, it rivals my favourite pizza place in Japan and when it's off, it's still better than all the other places in OC (not factoring in the price). If you like your dough on the chewy side but w/the light crusty crunch, this is the place. Power hour(s) happy hour runs all night Mondays and 5-8pm Tuesday - Sunday. Vibe has a mix of ambient and 90's hip hop music, beachside surfer/patrons outside of the newport bubble (aka i'm the only asian person) + they switch up the themes of their menu. last time it was aeronautics, this time was TV guide. One of the servers didn't know what a Midori Sour was and a bartender was going thru libation flashcards but they still have a decent selection of whiskey. read more

Mine was some fancy schmancy version of sliders and they were REALLY good, definitely recommend. At the risk of offending an entire county, I feel like Pie Society is a little slice of LA in "the OC." Hiding behind a pizza place, I would never have known this place was here normally. Love the decor, dark and cozy. Great outdoor patio too. I would be lying if I didn't say it's hipster because it is, but I loved it. They make a pretty mean Moscow Mule and have some of the most unique drink and drink names I've seen. It's a small place so when it gets busy, it's pretty full. There was a significant line outside when we left so the key seems to be to get there early. Nice staff. They forgot my drink so ended up comping it for us.
