For example the "All the Things" should have a complexity pairing mezcal and ginger but instead it's just an imbalanced brown liquor mix. I've had it made by different bartenders and it's just wrong. And what's with the pickle vodka drink?! Not ready to get on the mezcal train? I can recommend their take on the Paloma. Just lovely. Order the sausage party pizza. I came to this place last night with a couple friends. We looked at the yelp pictures online and saw that the ambiance looked pretty similar to another place we wanted to try but they were booked (another speakeasy). It's a little confusing at first as the actual location is BEHIND a pizza restaurant so you have to pull in like you're going to the pizza place, then you will see a small entrance lit up by flame warmers, that's your destination. The place itself is extremely small and it was PACKED. Not even any standing room as there isn't even any room for the servers to bring food and drinks around. The tables are very small so if you came to eat, good luck. The food was very good and the cocktails were good, too. Not spectacular but we were satisfied. Also, the music was SUPER loud and cranked so you cannot hear a damn thing, not even your own thoughts. So just prepare to sit and look at your friends while they're talking to you and act like you can hear them. If the music wasn't so loud, I might add an extra star. Pretty good cocktails, great happy hour food prices and a laid-back feel sums up Pie Society. The abundant parking is also nice. My roommates and I regularly come here for happy hour on weekdays. Park in the Pitfire Pizza lot (or maybe just Uber it...) and head in through the door at the back of the building. Every food item on their happy hour menu is $5 -- I highly recommend the mac and cheese. Cocktails come in at a 6.5/10. Above average but nothing too special. All of the employees are nice and not afraid of a little banter. As for the crowd level goes, I've never seen it too packed on weekdays. At worst, there will be a couple seats open at the bar. You'll find people in their mid-20s to early-30s, and I haven't encountered any dickheads yet. I guess that means it's me. read more

The bar area can be a little bit confusing to find if you haven't been here before. If you can see the string of lights from the parking lot...head toward them. Otherwise ask the employees at the restaurant section to help guide your way. The bar has a nice hip vibe. It almost seems like a nice bar in someone's really well decorated basement. We started off with the grilled broccolini and roasted cauliflower. The broccolini had a very smoky flavor, like it was straight off the grill. I personally liked the cauliflower better due to the the slight spice kick from the chile mint butter. We tried a seasonal pizza they were offering with brussel sprouts and bacon, which you really can't go wrong with. I had the Mint Julep drink, which I thought was pretty strong tasting. I preferred the wine over that cocktail though, guess mint juleps just aren't for me. The waitress was super nice and attentive as well. read more

At the risk of inspiring more people to come to my beloved neighborhood (make that my less-than-a-block-away-from-my-house) watering hole, I'm finally sucking it up to give Pie Society my strongest endorsement. What's so great about Pie? In addition to the location (right behind Pitfire on 17th street and conveniently located a short stumble from my abode), the ambiance is hip and relaxed. Few, if any, douche bags venture to this little slice of bar-heaven. The bartenders are incredibly nice and make some damn good drinks. I would recommend Christian's Moscow Mule, which tastes as crisp and refreshing as I imagine a a post-marathon Vitamin Water would. The Vodka Maids (and all the Maids, really) are amazing, and you can ask for them light on the simple syrup. The Poolside is another personal favorite, and I am also a fan of the Whiskey Sour. The Mixologist here at Pie are talented and the ingredients are fresh and flavorful. So yes, you might need to wait like 2 seconds for your drink but it's totally worth it. It takes a little extra time to add in the love. Be careful though - the drinks are strong and I often end up drinking my trusty favorite (red wine) to avoid getting wicked drunk on a Wednesday night (it's always a perfect night to hang at Pie in my opinion). The music is good and Shane the manager is willing to compromise on the playlist when it's not too busy (thanks!) Since Pie Society opened I have spent a near embarrassing number of nights perched on the delightful barstools, engaged in lively banter with my girlfriends or whoever I'm dating that week. Pie Society is the PERFECT after dinner drink spot, because it's fun and trendy but not too crowded so you can chill out and have a nice conversation with your company. The food is pretty meat-centric on the late night menu, which is my only criticism. If you are a veggie girl like me then I recommend the Sopressa pizza no meat extra extra cheese. And yes, I love the "I WAS BORN BRAVE" on the back wall, which apparently is a quote from the owner's 6 year old daughter. So freaking cute! I was born brave too sister! read more

They refused to serve my slightly autistic, completely SOBER, roommate (who highly recommended this spot and drove us there) a drink. Now, I'm not sure if our waitress was on some hater-aide bs or what, but the manager came over and proceeded to blame the waitress when she said he was the one who "cut us off", when neither of us had a drink. What happened to the customer is always right? This place is ridiculous, they only sell two crappy pizzas and the food is served out of the same kitchen as Pit Fire. This place sucks!! This place is definitely my kind of bar. It is a little bit hidden behind Pitfire but if you are smart enough to figure out that a big stocky guy guarding a small white gate is the entrance then congratulations you have some common sense and deserve a drink! Take your time scanning what they have on call because chances are there are a TON of spirits that you probably haven't heard of but should probably try. The decor is my biggest gripe but the drinks and staff are amazing all around. QUICK SCOPE: Food: 3.5/5 (Lacking in presentation) Drinks: 5/5 Wait Staff: 4/5 (-1 for service manager with the bad attitude) Ambience: 3/5 (Random set up and awkward indoor tables) Their take on classic cocktails keeps things very interesting and balances really well. One cocktail we couldn't stop talking about was The Old Man and the Sea (eat your heart out Hemmingway). All we could describe it as is a take on Christmas in a glass and without the the heavy feeling of drinking eggnog. If you're ever going to make any special requests or you're looking for the perfect Old Fashioned look for Steve behind the bar. For the average of $10 a drink it's worth the wait in time the way these drink are made. The way the bar looks in general is really confusing, especially if you're coming in with the expectation of a prohibition day speakeasy. The bar area resembles something from the 40s/50s with is creme color and curved corners. Apparently it used to be the pie oven from the once establishment of Marie Callendar's. There's a mural to the right of the bar which is the iconic scene for Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston from his 1960s bout. Bold text runs across it. Right about one of the couches and a reprint image of what looks like a beach day from the 50s as well. A little confused? So am I.... But it I'll admit the actual place not matching the given perception was a really good way to start a conversation. They were playing some old school hip-hop music throughout the night which again threw me off but at some point I was more appreciative that they weren't playing top 40. This "speakeasy" has its little quirks and I can probably compare it to a couple trendy dive bars down in San Diego but at the same time I can't because if you ignore the seating, mural, and loud music you probably can see the speakeasy it was meant to imitate. Low key, behind a popular restaurant, it apparently even comes with a faux wall that leads into/from the kitchen (thanks bouncer guy that helped point that out)! Food-wise we only tried the tater tots and it was okay. Not amazingly good but it was done right. Nice and crispy tots with sauces to dip on the side. They gave you this minimal aioli which I guess had a twist using orange juice (nothing too exciting if you already make your own aioli at home) and this chorizo "fondue" which was more memorable. You essentially are eating a fusion of a Mexican-American breakfast. All this was served in what looked like a prison plate or that plate that comes with your small convection oven. I think that's what made it so-so, if the presentation was just a little better I would say it was a memorable dish but at this point I'm arguing that I could have made this myself at home. The wait staff were really friendly and there were so many of them running around it wasn't too difficult to grab a seat away from the bar and order through them. Make a new friend her because seating is really awkward and limited. A couple couches on either side of the floor, a few high tables for 2, low tables with vintage chairs, and a large wood table in the center for a large group. We overheard a conversation from a couple other guys asking to see the kitchen area since it opens up from the faux wall and I guess this female manager rejected their request through one of the wait staff but not without throwing a mini fit just a few feet away from the guys that asked. Needless to say those two guys didn't ask for anything else. We got our share of her attitude when she came out with our chorizo tater tots and looked PISSED because we ordered from the bar and decided to move to the chairs to let the bartender's friends sit and talk with him while he worked. So rule of thumb, stick to ordering drinks and steer away from making it "inconvenient" to this "lady." All in all, I'm definitely a fan of this place, even with it's "quirks". It's really challenging to find a bar with a bartender who clearly has a passion for his art AND carry some of my favorite spirits. Come early before the rush of people because seating is limited and drinks can take a little longer. Don't expect a lot visually but your palate will enjoy. Look for Nikki for wait staff and Steve as a bartender and make sure you have a deep pocket because once you try one drink on their menu and get to talk to the bartenders you'll be asking for more. read more

A twist on an early swanky dim lit nostalgia meets the modern. The vibe is cool and with time will get dialed in even more. PROS: The dinks. Some of the best I have had. The tender knows his stuff. These are NOT everyday cocktails. The back alley approach to getting in to Pie Society is super fun. Can't wait to have it be secret knock entry only. CONS: Not really cons, more like my humble suggestions. Some of the wooden tables should get revamped and the old school Kodak sign, although kicks ass, should get traded for a throw-back neon liquor sign. The prices are not crazy, but I know we would have ordered more if they weren't so steep. Make happy hour a little happier if there were so more reasonable priced food options. I heard about a set of books in the back that you could pick from, show the book to the tender and name a liquor...and the tender would concoct a drink on the fly. Didn't see any books. Wish our server was wearing old school bar attire. Get the register dialed in. We waited 15min to sign our bill. Server should have asked to swipe our card again since the machine was having trouble capturing the card we had on open tab. Would have saved us 15 min of starring at empty glass. BOTTOM LINE: El Primo and Art of Kill are two must have drinks. 1 drink & splitting an appetizer is going to cost you $16+tip . read more

I came on a not-crowded weekday. I could see where Pie Society could get too cramped and the waits for drinks could get too long if there were more people there. The place isn't really designed to handle crowds. On a quiet night, however, this has to be the best bar in Costa Mesa. Bartenders that are friendly and know what they're doing. Innovative craft cocktail list that respects the classics and doesn't go overboard trying to be too clever. A great selection of liquors and small but well-chosen beer and wine lists. This review isn't totally complete because I didn't try any of the food here, but so far I give Pie Society an A+. read more
