Was this place good? Yes and no. I agree with another Yelper that my expectations about this business somewhat exceeded the reality. We learned about PIEBar on an episode of Arizona Highways, which absolutely raved about their empanadas. So we added it to our list of places to visit. First impression - yikes, it's small! The bright red & yellow building is only 329 sq feet! There is no seating inside, obviously. They have tables on both sides of the building, but it was cold so we ended up eating inside of our truck. When you go inside, you are greeted by an inviting showcase of their various empanadas. The lady behind the counter was friendly. I asked who was the smiling face on their logo and she explained it was Salvador Dali. He was simply a "placeholder" the owner used on the logo, which people liked so they kept it. The menu helpfully lists empanadas in order of popularity. I chose the top 2, The Mountain Man (sausage, potato, gravy, cheese) and Chicken Pot Pie. My husband also chose Mountain Man and Cordon Bleu. I also got a sweet "lemon bar" empanada. Each of the small pies was about $5. After his first bites of The Mountain Man, my husband said, "I'm not sure you're going to like this. It's spicy." I was surprised because the menu did not indicate it was spicy. But he was right - it was quite spicy. I asked later about that, and was told it's because it's made with chorizo. Despite the spiciness, it was very good. I can't say that about my chicken pot pie, which tasted like a Swanson TV dinner folded into a empanada. My husband did not much like his cordon bleu which he said consisted of dry chicken and he couldn't even taste the cheese. However, the lemon bar empanada was delicious. I wish I had bought several of the sweet ones. I'm guessing the sweet empanadas are better than the savory empanadas. Bonus points to the clean restroom in front, a welcome sight after driving 1.5 hours. Would I come again? Yes, but only for the delicious sweet empanadas. read more

Empanadas were small but good. Why are they so overpriced? Rent can't be that expensive. $5 -$6 is expensive for a 3 bite anything.

We were headed back to Phoenix from flagstaff and took the Strawberry AZ route. Took a pit stop at strawberry and found this hole in the wall. What a perfect looking spot and location to have a pie bar. The Dali board immediately caught our attention and we went in. The fresh empanadas, mini pies and pies were coming out of the oven and the smell of the freshly baked items made us to try everything there. We tried Chicken pot pie, veggie empanada, Buffalo chicken in the savory. Strawberry cream, peach, cherry, mini apple pie, mini Berry pie in the sweet. Everything we tried was delicious, fresh and had amazing flavor. The sweet was not overpowering the peach oh so fresh, felt like a mini cobbler. The chicken pot pie was so comforting, felt like home made. This place is great, I am glad we took a detour and made a stop at this cute little place. The pricing is about $4.5 on average. What a cool little spot! I was on a solo day trip with my dog and stopped by the cute little place. I bought the chicken pot pie empanada and sat outside with my pup to enjoy. It was soooo incredibly good that I ended up buying 6 more 2 ham and cheese, 2 Philly and two more chicken pot pie and three dessert pies to bring home to the fam. Over priced, unfriendly staff, they push a political agenda. Not worth going out of the way to get these. As of today I won't even pull off the road to stop here again. They all seem very arrogant for a small place that sells pies along the roadside. Recently came back to get some of the pies while we were out in the area. This wasn't our first time here. We noticed like most places the prices had gone up. My issue here is that their prices had already been high to begin with. We asked if any breakfast pies were still available and the lady at the counter snapped back and said they were already out. We order what we could paid and left. The lady who took our order was borderline rude, absolutely no pleasantries or customer engagement beyond asking what we wanted, trying to upsell us drinks or dips and if that was all for our order. No one else that worked there acknowledged our presence at all. When I went to pay I selected "no tip" yet I was changed a 25% tip on my bill. I know I should have verified the price before paying. But I just wanted out of there and I rushed. I don't and would never tip at a quick service food location. I went to look on their Instagram page for contact information to see if can get the tip reversed and I found the store often pushes their politics on this platform. I don't agree or disagree with their politics but when business push their politics I tend to stop buying from them as they are now a pushing their personal views and not their products. Over all poor experience, mediocre pies (by the way they buy frozen pies to sell pie slices, empanadas seem to be made in house). The pies are good over all but are not worth the price. They should be in $3 to $4 price point. But $6 is expensive for something that's as small as they are. I don't expect this business to try to take the feedback and build off it to improve but who knows maybe they will see the light and start offering better service and products with in a reasonable price point and not charge a tip when I didn't select one. read more

Our new favorite roadtrip spot. They should be featured in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Guy Fieri would love the food and the friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great quality empanadas and handheld pies. Their pie crust is delicious and they offer a huge variety of delicious fillings (savory & sweet). My daughter loved the Chicken Pot Pie empanada and said it was the best ever! I enjoyed the quality of the Picadillo beef with homemade Chimichurri sauce. Please bottle it!! My oh my! Loved that the menu is organized my "most popular" items, but we overheard some staff favorites that were lower down the board (so don't hesitate to go with your blink). We enjoyed several empanadas on the nearby (clean) picnic tables, then bought a couple dozen more to freeze and enjoy later (probably starting tomorrow morning!). It is hard to not miss PIEbar when you first drive into Strawberry. This small little place is painted in bright colors and has a sign with a large picture of who I believe is Salvador Dali on top of the building. There is usually a line out the door and seating is outside only. PIEbar sells sweet & savory empanadas, small & large pies, and beverages. I was staying at nearby Strawberry Inn and walked over for an afternoon snack. They have so many different types of filings to choose from. I was able to sample both sweet and savory. DELICIOUS! My boyfriend and I were spending a staycation in Pine and we came to PIEbar twice for breakfast. We arrived just before they opened and got in line. The smells coming out of the establishment were heavenly. Someone suggest we drive back to Phoenix from Cottonwood by way of Strawberry to stop at the PieBar. It was well worth the trip. The drive was beautiful and the empanadas were amazing. Wish I had taken a picture of them but we ate them so quickly. Don't be scared away by the line it moves quickly. These are not a traditional empanada, there are so many choices. Adorable place! Great concept. I've been wanting to stop here for a long time and finally did. I love pie... we were on our way home from a backpacking trip at Chevelon Lake. Each of the four of us ordered a different small hand pie. Mine was peach - it's summer! Filling was nice, size was ok, pastry was tasty, but under cooked and rather thick. My husband had strawberry-rhubarb. His was not hot in the middle and his pastry was also thick for the scale of the pie and a bit underbaked. I think I'll try them again sometime, but can't really recommend it and my husband has no interest in a repeat. He said he likes my pies better. read more

I also tried the picadillo and was a bit disappointed, it was extremely salty and mooshy, nothing like the traditional picadillo I am used to that my parents and grandmother made us growing up. I took a detour from Flagstaff to Tucson to try this place. I'm so glad I did. This service was fast and efficient, and the pies are made on premise and delicious. I had the breakfast burrito (eggs & bacon) on the patio. It was my least favorite. Kinda dry inside. Might have been because I got the last one and it had been sitting for a while. There were so many choices, I took a few to go and noshed on the drive back. I liked the picadillo and green chile the best. The red chile beef had great flavor too, but I liked the other two better because they were mixed with other ingredients. Went on an overnight trip to Flagstaff from Tucson with my kids. Stopped at PIEBar for lunch and it was awesome! Strawberry is adorable and this was a perfect spot to stop, get some wonderful food and enjoy eating outside amongst the pines. We visited the old school house first, which was fun. So many empanadas options! I can't remember all the fillings we got, but loved them all. I do remember I got the vegan- so flavorful and moist. My daughter tried the ham and cheese and said it was her favorite empanada. For dessert we tried the lemon and the strawberry. Both were amazing, but the lemon was a dream. Not sure why, but I was taken back by how delicious and high quality the empanadas were. Sometimes things are so overhyped and when you finally try it, you feel a bit disappointed. Not the PIEBar though. The lemon and strawberry were like nothing I've had before and pure perfection. Looking forward to more trips up north and will absolutely be stopping by this wonderful place!
