After searching for a good spot to grab dinner and beer near Del Mar, I discovered Pillbox Tavern. The 4.5 star average caught my eye and we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is on the small side but we were still able to easily get a table around 7:30 on a Friday night. The bartender told us to take a seat at any table and the waitress was quickly over to take our drink orders. There's a decent selection of eight or so beers on draft but sadly no cider for non-beer drinkers like me. I ordered the Blackened Chicken Sandwich with no bacon or spicy mayo (I dumped some ranch on instead). The sandwich tasted great but be warned that it is messy. I had juice running down my hands the entire time that I ate my burger and I went through two napkins wiping it up. The chicken has great flavor though and even the multigrain bun, which I was skeptical about, was good. The sandwich also has swiss, lettuce and tomato. Be sure to get the tater tots as your side as they are amazing. Perfectly crispy and seasoned, the tots are great dipped in ranch too. My boyfriend ordered the El Dolce, which is a veggie sandwich with red pepper hummus spread, mushrooms, fajita vegetables, lettuce, tomato, alfalfa sprouts, and Swiss served on an Amoroso roll, or as we thought it was, a hot dog bun. He thought the hummus spread was the highlight of the sandwich and thought it was pretty good as far as veggie sandwiches go. He got the seasoned fries and we both agreed that my tater tots were superior to his fries. I loved the look of the tavern, which had a modern coastal vibe. There's also a small parking lot in front of the restaurant that has a time limit during the day but seems to be open at night. I'd definitely come back again but I wish that they'd add a cider to their drink menu. I noticed they have a buffalo chicken dip, which I would love to try on a future visit. read more

I ordered the sweet chili wings with extra sauce and steak tips this is how they came. I drove 36 minutes to eat here and then had to turn around and come back once I got a spot at the beach. After returning I sent a friend in for extra sauce and they gave him some super dark red thick extremely spicy sauce and when I went back in, he started to argue with me that that was the right sauce as I finally got ready to just leave he tasted it and said oh you're right that's not the right sauce and then I called after waiting the 10 minutes to ask him to bring my food out as there was no parking and the guy hung up so I went in and asked for a refund and he tells me to just wait they're almost done when in reality, I paid 40 bucks for a horrible experience n cold dry food I hate to think I'm being decimated against but this was wild after all that do you think he included the extra sauce mon the wings or on the side absolutely not Bled over into our day. The Pillbox Tavern is a pretty dope little spot located just off of Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. This place is pretty small but is awesome and has a bit of unique charm to it. Came here one evening just looking to score some grub and grab a drink. They have a fairly substantial food menu and a nicely done craft beer menu. Ordered the Po Boy sandwich with some tater tots. The sandwich itself presented extremely well but the taste was just slight above average, kinda dry and not enough sauce I suppose... The tots and beer were absolutely awesome, not a single bad thing can be said about that. Pair the experience with some awesome service and this place deserves a solid 4 stars. I'll definitely come back, just may try out another menu item for dinner. She took our drink/food order and our drinks and appetizer of wings arrived quickly. As a new restaurant that was super packed because of the game I was expecting the service to be slow and wasn't expecting much as far as food. Well I was proved wrong fast!! We sort of stumbled on Pillbox Tavern on a trip to the coast, looking for dinner and a beer. Wow, were we pleased! We sat outside on a lovely day, feeling the ocean breeze, only a block from Fletcher Cove. The beer choices were new to us, as were some of the breweries. My husband made a choice, which I tasted, then I requested a splash of something else, which was graciously brought. My husband ordered the fish and chips; I ordered a favorite, the ahi poke bowl. Both choices were winners. My husband declared his fish and chips the best he has ever had (I had to agree after a taste), and the fries were terrific with a lovely crunchy exterior and a fluffy interior. The poke bowl had a good portion of ahi with shedded carrots and beets, and just enough nicely cooked rice. The wasabi vinaigrette was perfect! Hayley and I stopped here, with 2 friends from college, after a long day at the Del Mar Dog Beach. We had searched yelp for a nice place that was dog friendly, and this looked like the best option. Unfortunately, their patio is very limited, so we couldn't bring the dogs in, so we left them in the car, with the AC blowing on them. I have a feeling they preferred that. They were cuddled in the front seats together when we got back (picture attached). Hayley and I decided to share some food to try different things. She wanted to try the wings, but they didn't have boneless, so we got the chicken tenders and fries, with a side of bbq sauce that you can get on the wings. They were perfectly cooked and nice and juicy, along with nice crunchy fries. The last thing we ordered was the pulled pork sandwich. Not amazing, but still tasty. Pillbox was such a great experience, if for nothing else but the friendly service! We were greeted with booming hellos, and ushered to sit anywhere we liked. We were given our drinks immediately, and the staff came around frequently to make sure that everything suited our needs. Their menu is filled top to bottom with great options! Being the bottomless glutton that I am, I stressed out for way too long over the decision, but eventually came to an order of wings (5 wings of honey teriyaki & 5 wings of BBQ), the Pillbox Burger (with tots), and an additional side of fries! The first thing you'll immediately notice is the gigantic portions they plop down in front of you. They don't joke around with "healthy" portions; each of these orders can easily feed a family of 4 for nearly a week. The amount of food we got would put the KFC family meal to shame. The wings were pretty good - big, juicy, and flavorful - they'll easily beat out most of major chains. They're not as good as specialty wing spots, like Dirty Birds, but they do lend a new arm towards competition. The burger was also a definite plus! The patties were literally dripping with juices, and if you don't share the burger, you may not be able to get up from your seat. Armed with a generous side of either tater tots or fries, you may as well skip tomorrow's breakfast and lunch, because you'll still be full! All in all, the combination of food, homey atmosphere, and family-oriented service made this a great little gem! read more

The chicken sandwich, which was recommended by our server was great and came out quickly. Not dry and seasoned well I chose to accompany this sando with the mac salad that I unfortunately didn't enjoy quite as much, but it wasn't terrible either. What a delicious lunch we had! We have been wanting to come by here for some time now but never really had the time. Today we were able to squeeze it in before work! We were not surprised to see how busy this place was. We've heard some great things and needed to see for ourselves. Our server Karina was a delight and super friendly! We took some time to check out the menu and the first thing that caught my eye was the chicken eggrolls. We also ordered the Cajun chicken club sandwich and the pillbox platter! The wait for our food was very minimal and came out nice and hot. The platter was very flavorful and delicious. My favorite part was the rice...it was a mix of coconut, jalapeño and cilantro. Nice and fluffy! The mac salad was also very good! Chicken was cooked perfectly with drizzles of teriyaki sauce. The pineapple ginger dressing for the salad was phenomenal. Everything about that plate was top notch and delicious. I did not get a chance to have some of my fiancé's sandwich and he devoured it before I could have a taste. He did share his fries with me which were crispy and yummy. All in all a great place to swing by for a quick bite with lots of super friendly people and the baby was a huge hit with guests sitting next to us as well as the staff. Very friendly, chill place.
