Overall this is a great local place to eat breakfast they have your most common breakfast foods with a slight local twang. The prices are kinda of high ( example: a sandwich is about 10$ and a drink is 2$) if you are in a hurry you may want to go next door to the store and grab something pre made because they are not the fastest cooking wise. Overall it is a good place to stop if you are starving, it is the closest to the airport and has plenty of parking and free restrooms that are not locked! Which is very rare for hawaii. read more

Great place for casual lunch. Very quick service. Seating both indoor and outdoor. We tried the seafood platter and grilled mahi mahi. The calamari in the seafood platter was really good, the mahi mahi was a little lack of flavor, but the fish is so fresh that we still enjoyed it. Pine Tree Cafe: Get it together! Your food is so good, but the amount of plastic and foam you are using is shameful. There are comparably priced alternatives out there. If people are eating there, why can't you use paper plates? I love the island so much, we all love our ocean. There's no more time to use plastic. And I am pretty sure it will be outlawed soon based on an article I just read about foam bans in Maui and Oahu. This place is a genuine surprise! Cheap, good eats in an area NOT noted for anything inexpensive (outside of Costco). This place is the closest non-airport restaurant to the Kona airport. The name makes you think of non-descript oh-well, Diners that dot other places in the US, NOT the fact that this is real local Hawaiian restaurant with Loco-moco, pig ... huge menu for the modest traveler needing to save his/her coin. When this place first opened I used to go in pretty often because I worked nearby down at NELHA, the food was usually so-so not really anything that stood out. But recently I went back and had the crispy spicy garlic chicken and I must say I am very impressed again. That plate is one of the best I have had on the island and certainly the best at pine tree cafe. One thing I also really like about this place is when you get the green salad with your order it is actually a very fresh and very nicely prepared salad. Better than most sit down places... and in its own container so it doesn't get hot and wilted thrown in with the rest of your food. Not the cheapest in town... and can get very busy at lunch time. We love this place. We've had occasion to eat here several times and have NEVER been disappointed. We always order the fish special whether it's grilled ono, grilled ahi, or fried ahi belly. The portions are large enough for 2 people who like smaller portions. The folks are very friendly and helpful and the food is served promptly. Locals eat here, so that's also a plus. I love the chicken teriyaki burger! So juicy and tender with an amazing sauce. Best I've ever had! The menu is a bit overwhelming. There are so many things listed. It's huge. This place was recommended to us by the lady at the rental car agency, as the closest food to the airport. She assured us it was authentic, and indeed it was. Yes we ordered fast and no we probably didn't read the menu as closely as we should have but I was not a fan of anything we ordered. Husband ordered teriyaki beef which was ok but very fatty. I ordered the spicy chicken plate with white rice and salad. My chicken (thighs) were so deeply fried they didn't have the nice golden shell but almost a whitish shell. Our son ordered fish and chips which looked ok. My family and I recently stopped by the pine tree cafe after movies for a quick bite. My wife had a quesadilla and two of my kids had loco mo cos the other had a grilled cheese sandwich. I ordered a two item plate lunch Kala-bi ribs and Korean chicken. wife's ques was good , one of the loco mo cos was OK ,the other the burger was burnt and the eggs were well done we asked for over easy. My older sons grilled cheese was good . Now on to my "two choice" plate lunch advertised as two choice for $9.95 I was charged $10.95. As for the Kalb there was almost all bones I'd say seventy percent bones and thirty percent meat.the chicken were tiny wing pieces that were mostly bone as well.The cook/manager when asked if the bone to meat portion was the norm insisted to show me raw short ribs and said sometimes they are bigger sometimes not. Luck of the draw I guess. Counter help a thin young girl was somewhat rude when we asked why we were charged more for the plate lunch. She said it was because the short ribs were expensive. my wife who is ha ole went to the order counter and was passed up by the counter girl who chose to help two other local guests before helping my wife. I told the cook/manager I just want my money back because the meal had no value at almost eleven dollars. I think next time I go Kona I am going to bring them a mix plate from Hawaiian style in Waimea and a Costco pizza, as well as two subway foot-longs to express the lack of value they are providing compared to these other meals all under ten dollars.I will never buy any food from this restaurant again. First because of the lack of customer service and attitude from counter help as well as the cook/manager secondly and most important the food just sucks.Also smallest soda siz is a large at $1.75 way to much for a young child. read more

I was recommended to this place by a local for local hawaiian food, which I loved as a hale kid; it did not disappoint. It is not fancy, but local restaurants never are. In a strip mall, literally right off the Qk highway19. Loud, bright, and unromantic it is a welcome sight for an overpriced tourist. They have a combo plate which had everything, including pork, which now as an adult, I don't eat, so it is hard to really appreciate the food; that which I ate, I loved. Did I mention I love poi? For our past few trips to the Big Island, the Pine Tree Cafe has been our first stop from the airport and our last stop before heading back to the airport. Its location is convenient to the airport and maybe a five to ten minute drive from downtown Kona. The menu is huge but we usually get the same thing, Katsu Dip and Chicken Cutlet. The katsu dip is chicken katsu dipped in possibly a Korean teri sauce, probably the sauce they use for the Korean chicken. Super moist but also crispy, yum! The chicken cutlet is also good, although I wish they used a darker brown gravy instead of the lighter chicken gravy they use. The mac salad is ono as well. It's usually packed, especially around lunch but the wait isn't too long. This last trip, when we dropped off our rental car, the rental agent said, "You guys went to Pine Tree?". She could smell the deliciousness emanating from the takeout package. =) read more
