I love 24-hour diners and have been curious about this place for a while now. Dropped in on the Saturday evening of the Chinese New Year parade to get some food before watching the parade and our timing was perfect, because every seat in the house was taken except for the table that was just clearing as we walked in. It was a really busy evening for the staff, but they handled the crowd well and kept people moving in and out of the place pretty efficiently. But bear in mind that it's a pretty tiny restaurant and not ideal for groups larger than four. I ordered the tuna salad sandwich with a side of fries and also got a small bowl of their chili con carne on the side. The food came out fast, despite the sheer amount of activity going on in the kitchen, and I was pretty happy with my meal. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated -- just a good, basic tuna salad sandwich with celery, red onions, and mayo, topped with some lettuce and tomato. The fries were really good and had great flavor. The chili was just ok though. Certainly not the worst I've ever had, but was just kind of mid and forgettable. While I'd order the sandwich and fries again, I don't think I'd need to order the chili again. We were in and out pretty quickly. This is your typical no frills, straight forward diner experience, with breakfast and lunch available all day and dinner available from 5:00-9:00. There's a lot to choose from on the menu and enough to have me intrigued and wanting to return to try some other things. Recommend checking it out if you're in the area.

My daughter had a layover in San Francisco at the Westin St. Francis, and this was the closest spot within walking distance for breakfast--so it was an easy choice. This is exactly what you'd expect from a classic diner. The inside has that nostalgic, old-school feel, the service was quick and efficient, and the coffee was just good, no-frills diner coffee. I ordered an omelette and they followed my instructions perfectly--it was delicious and very filling. My daughter had the huevos rancheros, which tasted great but was definitely a bit messy to eat. Overall, it was a solid, satisfying breakfast that hit the spot. Nothing over the top, but exactly what we needed.

Great that its open 24 hours on the weekends. Got seated pretty fast but the diner was full and it took a while to order food. Some things got missed on the order. Orange juice is overly sweet. French toast was alright. Only 2 full pieces of bread. Bacon and pancakes were great. After we finished our dinner, it took a long time time to see our server to be able to get the check.

for a 24 hour diner, the food here is pretty good. i like the chili cheese fries the most!! this place was right next to our hotel so it was so convenient to grab a late dinner. service is a lil slow but very friendly! i appreciate the staff and esp the 24 hour hours super casual diner. feels cozy and familiar. like you can spill all sorts of secrets with each other over there.

A late-night stop after the sparkle and drama of Moulin Rouge on Broadway--exactly the kind of night Pinecrest Diner was made for. I had the Pinecrest Burger, my best friend went for the patty melt, and both were pure comfort done right--simple, satisfying, and unmistakably good. The kind of food that grounds you after a long, magical evening. The diner vibe never gets old: warm lights, classic booths, and that timeless feeling that you're exactly where you're supposed to be. The staff, as always, were genuinely friendly and welcoming, even late into the night. This was my second time here, and Pinecrest Diner still doesn't disappoint. Reliable, nostalgic, and full of heart--one of those places that quietly becomes part of your city story.

Stopped by Pinecrest Diner after watching Paranormal Activity at the Toni Rembe Theater. We came in around 10 PM and it was already pretty busy. They're open 24 hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger, which I found was a bit bland. The mozzarella sticks were good though, just a little pricey. Overall, it's a solid spot if you're looking for late-night bites in the area.

Pinecrest is one of those few spots in SF which is 24/7. It's a very low frill classic diner in the heart of San Francisco. The decorations I ordered the Pinecrest Special and thought that the French Toast was executed pretty well. The scrambled eggs were a bit lackluster and there wasn't much behind the sausage and bacon. The portion size for the price is alright for San Francisco. The service was pretty efficient with not much else to comment on. Although there are better brunch spots nearby, I think Pinecrest would be a reliable option after a night out and would just be a nice place to chill with friends.

TL:DR - order the club sandwich This is a seriously delicious sandwich. Probably one of the better clubs you will find. Service - when the Curran theatre is running best to get here early cause this place will fill up Pro tip - for 7 pm shows get here by 5:30 minimum.

I have eaten at the Pinecrest Diner on numerous occasions and can't believe I have never reviewed them before. Usually this is my favorite breakfast spot near Union Square, and I've loved every breakfast I've ever had there. This was the very first dinner I've eaten there. I wasn't disappointed. My Reuben was perfect, the onion rings were surprisingly good, and the fries very good. The service was classic diner, only missing my east coast "hun". And the ambiance was pure diner - tables and counter seats, and a line that was often down the side of the building.

I love the diner atmosphere when we went inside for a dinner meal! Everyone in their booths or at the diner aisle facing the counter looked to be enjoying the company and food. It is a really great spot to enjoy food. My boyfriend and I ordered breakfast of the eggs and toast and sausage and hash browns. We also got a side of fries with our chocolate malt drinks! Perfect blend perfect combination. My boyfriend ordered corn beef hash and I tried some and it was delicious! The sausage was a bit too spicy for my stomach to digest but it had so much delicious flavor! I gave it to my boyfriend to eat for me. The ratio of the butter on the sour dough toast was evenly balanced and spread! So delicious! Definitely want to make a come back! The servers were so attentive and kind. You pay for your meal up at the front afterwards!

What we paid for a cold and uncomfortable breakfast.

We paid $64 for breakfast for two, and unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The food arrived cold, and the atmosphere was uncomfortable because customers waiting in line were standing halfway inside the restaurant, constantly leaving the door open. The space simply doesn't seem designed to handle the queue that way. We politely asked the waitress if we could move to another table, but she laughed at the request. We also asked if the door could be kept closed, and although she responded, it felt like the bare minimum effort was made. Overall, the service and atmosphere did not match the price we paid.

This diner is amazing, good ingredients cooked right. The biscuits & gravy are some of the best I ever had . Gravy is perfect and the biscuits are delicious. My omelette was cooked perfectly. Will be back for sure, the sandwich's look delicious.

Decent 24-hour diner. It gets very crowded so service is slow. They really should hire more servers. Food is ok, but overpriced.

They have a wide selection overall, and the short rib grilled cheese and omelettes are pretty good. That said, there's nothing particularly special about the food. I usually come here with a Groupon, which makes it feel like you're saving more than you actually are (it's really only about $7.50 that you're saving). I will say the service is consistently great. But if you're ordering off the regular menu, it feels overpriced for what you get and pretty average food at higher-than-average prices. My kids love it though, so for now, it's still our go-to spot!

So it might have rated three stars before this past April. What happened in April? Well, I don't know whether it actually occurred in April, but in April, I noticed that Mel's very prominently advertises on its menu that it fries its fried foods in beef tallow. That means I can't eat French fries or onion rings from here, because they're needlessly not vegetarian. And while I'm not the most healthy person out there, I do notice when things probably aren't vegetarian. In short, I'm pretty sure this is a change, because I would have noticed this a long time ago and ordered accordingly. So why did Mel's make this change? Probably because its owners are MAHA people, and RFJ, Jr., and a bunch of other clueless people believe that seed oils are deadly. But even if you believe seed oils are deadly, there are other non-seed oils that aren't sourced from dead animals. I only noticed because it's printed on the menu, so it's not like Mel's is trying to hide this change--on the contrary, I think they really believe using beef tallow is a selling point. Except that there are expressly vegetarian items on the menu, including a veggie burger. Non-beef fries aren't even an option? Really? I must issue a GRATUITOUS MEAT ALERT. Other things annoy me about Mel's too. It's not open late enough. They do that stupid thing where they charge you a hidden fee to pay either their workers' salaries or for their health insurance. A Bunch of SF restaurants do this same thing; it's false advertising, and it should be illegal. Build the cost of doing business into your actual prices. It's not as if the restaurant is paying these fees; we customers are. Finally, the service has been atrocious the last two times I came here. If you don't have enough servers to offer good service, do not seat people. That's the time-tested solution. Seating people without enough help just makes everyone angry. This isn't a one-star review, because Mel's is useful in a late-night bind and has a parking lot. If more places in San Francisco were open late or at least until ten p.m., Mel's would probably only warrant one star. Still, I can't see coming here anytime soon, especially after such recent bad service. It's also really expensive, even pre-hidden fee.

The whole time our service was fantastic, it wasn't super busy so they were also able to give us a little history about Saint Francis fountain and the building. The space has that classic diner decor, fresh pothos cuttings at every table, I felt the good energy. The coffee was good, no frills diner coffee. We ordered the chef's mess side of banana bread (the warm it up straight on the grill), biscuits and gravy with poached eggs, and the sourdough French toast with banana walnut topping. Was this too much food for two people? Of course. When you look at this incredible menu, good luck choosing only 1 thing! The food came out hot and very big portions. The biscuits and gravy were perfect. The gravy was creamy with nice size chunks of sausages, cooked so well, sausage wasn't overcooked. The biscuits were so soft, buttery. The home style spuds were seasoned really well, paired really well with my eggs and biscuits and gravy. I was so happy. The sourdough French toast was so good. The fresh banana topping with walnut and a little butter in one bite, wow!! It was also done so well, sourdough wasn't mushy at all. My partner enjoyed their chef's mess. The hash browns were cooked to perfection! Would definitely recommend to give it a try if you're in the area.

Well, it's been over 18 years since my first and last review of Art's Cafe. I'm sure I've changed…read moremore than this longstanding diner has. No, I haven't had cosmetic surgery, but thank you for asking. I've just been trying to eat with a little more discrimination in both my palate and my diet, but sometimes I like to indulge myself with a few extra calories my body is more than willing to accept begrudgingly. Quite reassuring to see the set-up never changes here. It's still the same 14-stool counter in the same hallway-size space. I came in on a weekday about a half-hour before closing. There was only one customer at the far end of the counter and now me. After 30 years, the original owners retired during the pandemic, and the current owners had taken the reins without skipping a beat. They're still serving the same combination of classic American diner fare and traditional Korean staples. Previously, my penchant for greasy spoons left me in a state of American isolationism. For example, a while ago, I had the $16.55 Tuna Melt on toasted sourdough with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and cheese. It truly hit the spot with a pile of krinkle fries thrown in for good measure (Photo 9). This time for the first time, I went fusion and finally ordered their signature $17.75 Hash Brown Sandwich with Dakgogi (Chicken).and Shredded Cheddar Cheese. It was a satisfying exercise in gluttony, for sure, with two eggs sunnyside-up and sourdough toast (Photo 10). I thought I wouldn't finish it. I thought wrong. Besides, it was a treat watching Young (the wife) cook it in front of me on the sizzling grill.
