Worst Chinese food I have ever had. I would actually eat a bag of chips and a soda... or go hungry before I would ever eat there again.

The service was good. The food was bland and tastes like the vegetables were frozen prior to cooking. Edible but not tasty or particularly satisfying. My daughter says I'm being generous. read more

So this is my opinion of the day I ate there. Mother's Day. So I'll start like this. The service. It was awesome because the little asian lady was so sweet and kind and polite. That's how all people should be and it made for up lifting conversation at the table. The lighting is always good there no matter where you sit. Now I'm a super long time Albany born and raised and seen the good, the bad and ugly in restaurants, diners and yes dives come and go. So when I very first ate at pings restaurant years and years ago. It was actually very delicious but throughout the years I have to say it's actually went down hill. Now I'm a shrimp connoisseur with batter and without. Back in the day you'd get some nice size shrimp and just the right amount of batter. Dining at pings through the years I've have overcooked chewy shrimp and just batter with no shrimp and batter undercooked as in wet batter. So for Mother's Day I'd thought I was wanting Asian food and not to-many to choose from anymore locally, we hit Pings. Sad to say my dinner was actually cold, yes cold. Not even Lukewarm. But when I seen the table next to mine get there food hot with steam rolling off. Told myself and my wife let's go. Yes I could have sent it back but I've done that times before and thought I'll take it to go and now that I can leave an honest review and that's what I'm going to. But I see there's not many good reviews. Hmmm. Seems like one of the only Asian and long time Asian places in town. Seems you'd be better all the way around. What I'm going to say is I'll travel out of town to get my fix of an Asian dinner if I'm going to pay extra knowing I'll get a satisfactory dinner. This as of now multiple times unsatisfactory at this place. Sad. It's just ruins the outcome of a special day. If you like steamed hum bao buns, this is the place to go in Albany. Ask for the char siu bao. They come as a matched set of four. Just be sure to eat them while they're still hot and most yummy! There's lots of variety on the menu, so there will be something for everyone, but nothing stands out well enough to write home about, except the aforementioned buns. Count on having leftovers as the portions are generous. Since the start of the covid pandemic I've come to prefer take-out, and won't dine in any restaurant when it is crowded. Besides the health risks involved, I don't appreciate slow service and cold food. Despite the kitchen and wait staff's best efforts, they can be overwhelmed by too many customers. Change of owner. Great customer service, ordered food and it was ready within less than 10 minutes time. Hmm usually takes longer to cook. Nothing was prepped but only the ones came out of the freezer, canned and fried or microwaved. Ate the meal and ended throwing it away. Wont go there again. They lost the touch to really cook. it was lunch time on a Saturday and only one car in the parking lot. That should have been a clue. we waited at the front desk a good 5 minutes before anyone came out. Ordered the 3 item lunch special - fried orange shrimp (4), pork ribs (4 tiny bites) and egg foo young that so fishy tasting I wasn't able to tolerate it. Boy, I wanted to give this place more stars... the service was the best part. Our server was cheerful, attentive, polite and kept our drinks fresh. Kudos! The food arrived and it looked good... but then we tasted it. We ordered Crab puffs, Mongolian beef and Happy Family. These are dishes we have often and so they work for comparison. Like I said, the presentation was nice. The flavor though... was missing. The veg was fresh and crisp and the meats were all tender and fresh, but there was nothing to tie it together. A hallmark of Happy Family is a delicious brown gravy that ties everything together, this was more like weak low sodium beef broth. The Mongolian beef (generally a spicy dish) had no spice. We even clarified that it was supposed to be spicy... this was not. The crab puffs were... ok. The restaurant was clean and pleasant enough to sit and talk. Dinner was $50 so not super spendy. When I get Chinese food I want flavor. This dinner was pretty but lifeless. I should have snapped photos but I tend to leave the phone away on date nights. Sorry. I was torn between two and three stars. The service and ambiance made me go to three but two and a half is probably where my lizard brain would like to end up. Great food but horrible service AGAIN. we arrived and finally got seated. Then sat for 15 minutes before 2 ladies decided who would wait on us. One lady was too busy having conversations with other customers to wait on us while the other was attempting to cover the customers. This is not the first bad service experience here but our last. We've never had a bad meal here. Large portions so there is always leftovers. My issue is with the landscaping and curb appeal. I've lived in the Albany area for years and there never seems to be any landscaping the general cleanup done. They have overgrown bushes and weeds galore. Highly suggest that you check all of your order for accuracy on take out! Missing the main course and very frustrated that the server who answered the phone was OBVIOUSLY playing video poker, and could care less my husband has to drive back across town for the order we are missing! Ordered take out. Woman at counter did not take order correctly, nor did she act like she cared whether she got my order right or not. I'd ordered shrimp instead of chicken. I caught it as I was paying the tab and noted chicken dish, not shrimp. She ran back to alert the cook the order was wrong and to make dish with shrimp. I asked for white rice. Got home. Got pork fried rice. I called restaurant, Apparently mixups happen a lot. I was very unhappy and wrote a Google review. Fast forward to tonight, The woman (I was told she is one of the owners) who got my order mixed up, in checking my charges on my card, I was charged twice. She'd apparently not voided out the original incorrect order. I'll call Tuesday. I am very disappointed. We can't trust the counter people to get the correct order and to understand how to void out incorrect charges. We will not frequent Pings again. read more

Some positives about Ping's are their service, their prices, and the atmosphere. The service was quick and attentive. We were able to get our drinks and order fairly quickly, which made for a good lunch spot. On the menu there are a lot of lunch options and they also run a special every month. I spent less than $12 here. The restaurant is updated and seems to be kept up. With all of that being said, the best thing I had was the sweet and sour chicken which was really more like orange chicken. The egg flower soup was thin and clear, it tasted okay but was not what you would usually expect. As far as the other items I ordered, they weren't bad but nothing special. There was a lot of celery in their dishes so be aware of that! Overall, pretty run of the mill for Americanized Chinese food. read more

I'm a long time customer and fan of Pings, so it hurts me to give such a harsh rating of this restaurant. I hope that Quen and Ping are enjoying their retirement. I wish that this establishment would change their name, it is no longer Pings. I tried to order our regular order only to find out certain dishes had been removed (spicy popcorn shrimp). So, I ordered some fried shrimp. The batter covering had holes, it didn't cover the shrimp and was fried hard as a fortune cookie. The piece of shrimp inside was TINY and hard. The chili garlic shrimp was bland and tasteless. The fried rice should be labeled sun baked rice with not much else included. Our dogs wouldn't eat it. So, needless to say, we won't be ordering anything else here. Yummy House has excellent fried shrimp and are family owned and operated. Please give them a try. read more

Had a late lunch early dinner today from Pings.this was the second time we have eaten there since new owners. The first time was awful so we gave them some time too work things out and practice I guess. This second time was worse, I have never had such horrible shrimp I think they had been sitting for sometime. They should have been thrown away NOT sold too anyone way over cooked so hard couldn't eat them. Red sauce is now just ketchup with some sugar so gross. I read the reviews, filtered through the input and made the decision to order for my family regardless of some of the negative comments. What I got for $55 was a small amount of food and a large amount of disappointment. I think I could have gotten several happy meals and fed the individuals more if I had just trusted my gut (which was hungry and misled) but I didn't. I have eaten inside before and it was good and portioned well but as this is the third delivery order in the 6 years I've lived here...congrats, I will never order from you again. I bought food tonight from pings , as the food has always been awesome , tonight I was very disappointed the food was taste less, the fried rice had nothing but sauce of some sort I believe maybe soy sauce very hard to describe . The chow mein had no flavor. BBQ pork was dry , Sweet and Sour sauce pork tough and taste less . I spent 50. 00 this was my treat that only happens once every other month or so . What happened!!! The food was sub par and our order was incomplete. Did not notice it until we got home. Always loved Pings but this is the first time there since the NEW owners. The HOT mustard was not hot, but barely warm. The shrimp dipping sauce was bland and watered down, so thin! The fried rice was bland and barely had any vegetables and egg in it. Tried out Pings since new owners took over and would NOT recommend it. I had the Broccoli chicken and it was terrible. Very strange flavor and had no sauce as it used to have when Ping owned it. Husband had the Schezuan combo and the flavor was totally off and tasted watery. Service was good however no complaints with our service. However food has really changed and NOT for the good. I'll be straight up honest, this has to be the worse Chinese food I've ever had. I've grew up in the Bay Area for most of my life surrounded by different cultures and a plethora of places to eat at. From the bustling noises of late night Pho places to the firecrackers going off in Chinatown at SF for Lunar New Year, I've had my taste and expectations for Asian cuisine. Hell, I'm Asian too. What surprises me the most about this place is how dry everything is. The Szechuan dumplings are dry even thought they're covered in Szechuan sauce. The pork in the Sweet & Sour pork is cooked to oblivion. Even the fried rice (which by the way doesn't even have any vegetables in it INCLUDING green onions) was dry as hell - as a result for stir-frying for too long. Last but not least, their Wonton soup can't be called Wonton soup. You can't calls those dumplings "wontons" with how bland and chewy those are. They put broccoli and carrots in the Wonton soup instead of Bok choy and green onions in the Wonton Soup - that says it all. In the end, if Yelp let me, I'd give this place a 0/0.5 out of 10. Ping's Garden is a fabulous Paleo find with fresh ingredients. It is awesome balance of authentic clean fresh Cantonese food a la Hong Kong style, and also dishes that Americans commonly love in Chinese restaurants. I love this restaurant because I can go there and eat authentic clean fresh Paleo Chinese dishes with American friends who love their Happy Family favorites. Ping's Garden restaurant was quite crowded on a Friday night, but there was still room to get a table. It's a bit hidden away, so keep looking for it, if it is your first visit. read more

Second time in six weeks we've ordered Pings. So very disappointed in the lack of flavor and overall quality. We ordered Honey garlic chicken that had a taste of old fryer oil. Pork egg fu young tasted as if there was flour in it that wasn't cooked out. Portions are so much smaller than before. I'm sorry to say this family will no longer patronize Pings. So sad what has happened to our once favorite place! Prices have skyrocketed but the food was just okay. Had a take out order of 2 soups, rice and chow main. It took 45 minutes to get the order and when I got home the noodles for the chow main were missing. So the two small cardboard containers and two soups were over $40 bucks! No way I'll do that again! But to top it off when I asked the lady if she had the soup containers on good and tight, so they wouldn't spill in my car she got pretty sassy and told me that was my responsibility! Since Ping and Quin sold the business, the new owners have changed product and recipes. I've been going there for over 30 years, since they were in the little restaurant next to Wendy's Years ago. They are bever very busy so I know I'm not the only one seeing the differences. Waylin is still serving but once she is gone I hope I can find another place to eat Chinese food. read more

I recently went to this "restaurant" for the first time hoping to enjoy a delicious dinner. I was extremely disappointed.. all of the food is deep fried and no where near fresh. The pork we ordered was dry and the chowmein was flavorless. Ever since the change in ownership the quality went down a lot, this WAS my favorite restaurant because of the orange chicken but since then it has changed, at first when we asked they said it was dark in the kitchen and they didn't know what sauce it was (likely a safety violation of some kind) then they said it was the orange sauce and went back to somehow not knowing what it was. But on top of that I took us nearly 2 hours to get our food, because a waiter somehow forgot to put our order in yet that isn't it, they fired all the nice people and hired people who have egos so big they think what they did was fine but instead thought they deserved a 75% tip for cold food at a price near $100.
