I wandered in during my lunch hour and chatted with a staff member who was nice enough to prepare a decadent free sample for me and gave me a detailed rundown of the all of the store's offerings. With the amount of frozen yogurt and toppings that I got, I believe this is a lot more worth it than paying per pound (like other frozen yogurt places) The frozen yogurt is also not too heavy (like it's supposed to be). Isn't Pinkberry going through legal stuff because the product it markets as "real frozen yogurt" is actually a powder that they then mix and churn before serving it up? If that's the case, then perhaps people should rethink their high opinion of Pinkberry. I was recently in LA, and there are so many versions of the new "real frozen yogurt" craze out there, they're sure to trickle over to the East Coast as Pinkberry has. The thing with the real frozen yogurt is that its supposed to taste tart and tangy, not sweet like Tasti-D, and its also supposed to be actual yogurt. The version to look out for, which should have an NYC location opening soon, is Red Mango. It actually IS real yogurt, frozen and blended, with all the healthy toppings to go along with their plain and green tea versions. In the mean time, if you want real frozen yogurt, go to 40 Carrots in Bloomingdales, which has huge portions and healthy topping offerings just like Pinkberry. I always got dragged to Pinkberry by my friends in the UES. It was walkable, decidely a "healthy" snack to the alternatives, and they couldn't stop talking about it. When I first ate Pinkberry I didn't get it. Especially not at that price! I had plain frozen yogurt with raspberries on top...it wasn't particularly sweet and I was not impressed. But somehow... after a few visits... I just liked it. A LOT. So I don't know what it is about this stuff, but its addictive!!!! After sampling Zabar's and Yolato's fro-yo no-nos, I probably would have resisted the fadtastical allure of Pinkberry for many more months if it weren't for a paramour's wish to frequent the place. I went in a cynic. I came out an admirer. I ordered a medium with three types of fruit for around $7. Overpriced, yeah, but the Medium was big enough to wonder who could possibly eat the large. The taste is definitely a break from similar frozen treats - soft-serve ice cream, typical frozen yogurt, Tasty-D-Lite, etc. The slightly sour taste really did remind me of yogurt and, combined w/ the fruit topping, I felt like I was eating a variation of a yogurt and fruit breakfast dish (should've went with the granola topping). Now I like yogurt and fruit so it worked for me. Is this exactly the flavor combo I want come dessert time? Not most of the time. I'd choose ice cream, gelato, sorbet, Italian ice, etc. more often than I'd choose Pinkberry but that's not really the point. I enjoyed it and could definitely see working it in the rotation. ("iPod-inspired shiny white plastic decor, adorable packaging, and sky-high prices") By the way, this address is on 82nd Street, but the storefront itself is a bit south on Second Avenue. Even though it's not Tasti D, Pinkberry's sweet-but-sour, this-is-really-yogurt-that-is-frozen taste nevertheless still has an inexplicable draw, and this location is oh so convenient for me. Their impressive array of fresh fruits in the dead of winter is quite the treat, and, while I haven't tried them yet, they also offer the opportunity to have those "don't eat those, they're bad for you" cereals of your childhood (e.g. Cap'n Crunch, Fruity Pebbles) without having to commit to an entire box. On to the cons... the service really is horrible. I have been there when there is a huge line out the door (as always) and literally no one is even being served. Their process is so inefficient. It's set up so that you can't even look at the toppings before you order. I'm pretty sure that the workers are supposed to go slow. Also, the first time I went, I ordered a small with 3 toppings. It turns out that a small with 3 toppings costs more than a medium with 3 toppings and they didn't even tell me! That really irked me. At over $6 for a medium w/ 3 toppings, the cost is also ridiculous. Especially seeing as how they are so stingy with each fruit topping. Final note: you have to get the pinkberry flavor with fruit toppings. I don't think the tanginess of the yogurt would go well with other toppings. Pinkberry is a Korean inspired desert shop that serves frozen yogurt, shaved ice, and smoothies. Their frozen yogurt comes in three flavors; original, green tea, and pomegranate (some locations still have coffee). I like original the most, coffee is the worst. They provide over 18 fresh toppings to personalize your froyos and shaved ice. Their store on the upper east side is the first one that I came across and maybe their first in NYC, but they have over 50 branches spread out between New York and California. It's really small and has very limited seating. The service is a bit slow and the lines are usually out the door, but the froyo is good and worth the wait. A bit of warning, they are a bit pricey at $3-12 depending on size and amount of toppings. read more

Then they get the orders wrong because they're all idiots. Seriously I've never found a lower intelligent group of people at a fast food place. The past 3 times they got our order wrong, overcharged us, and had us re-order 3 times in a row cause they kept giving our order to someone else. I feel kinda lame for loving this place as much as I do. It's super trendy and diet-friendly, two things that do not describe my personal philosophy very well. That said, this place is FANTASTIC. Don't believe the haters - if you are a yogurt lover, you need to go to Pinkberry. The frozen yogurt tastes like actual yogurt (not that Dannon crap), one of my favorite foods. The strawberry fruit topping is great, they don't taste out of season at all. The raspberries don't have quite enough flavor. I didn't know about the secret rice cakes until after I had already ordered last night, I will have to go back soon and try them. The scene is, well, full of women in exercise gear and metro- guys.
