After spending a few days in the western part of the island, my wife and I were baffled by the number of food trucks serving pizza. Is Puerto Rican pizza a thing? How could could it possibly be? It seemed bizarre but I'm glad we gave this place a shot. It was the first spot we tried to go in San Juan to try and catch an NBA playoff game. There was a line out the door and a quick glance inside made it clear that this wasn't really a place to settle in the bar to watch a game (Greengo's down the street ended up being the better "sports bar" option). We came back the next day for lunch and followed the crowd sourced wisdom of Yelp and ordered La Pampa pizza and some Lazitos, which are basically garlic knots. Both dishes were fantastic and we'd definitely recommend this place. The ingredients were so fresh and the crust on the pizza was top notch. The service was friendly too. So I guess Puerto Rican pizza IS a thing and it's a VERY good thing based on our meal here! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Old San Juan. It's busy almost any time of the day or any day of the week. I haven't waited more than 20 minutes to be sat though. They have a variety of appetizers, main courses and pizzas. I've yet to try anything other than cocktails and pizzas and a sampler appetizer. Their tripleta pizza is my favorite. It combines the Puerto Rican flavors with the Italian basics. Their sangria is quite delicious too. I brought my sister in law who lives on the island. She was upset she'd never heard of the restaurant. I will continue to dine there whenever I'm around Old San Juan and recommend it to any tourists that want some good pizza but still want some Puerto Rican pizazz thrown in the mix. It was so good that we went back a second time within the 4 day trip. Prices are fair, service was great, and ambience chill. they have late hours so good for a lunch or for a drunken stumble in at the end of the night. Im from NYC and a pretty tough critic when it comes to pizza. There are some places (florida) where I wont even attempt to order pizza. My recommendation for this place is whole hearted. Only came here for drinks and to watch my Jayhawks win our first night in Old San Juan, but based on a small sample size it was a great little place. We ordered margaritas and requested they change the channel away to the game and they were super accommodating. Very friendly bartender who absolutely knew her stuff. She made great drinks and was on her game. The restaurant looked like my kind of place and everyone around was friendly. Service is excellent! The Pizza is out of this world. My family has been making Pizza for over 75 years. I always like to try other Pizzas and this one is way up there in quality. We had two Pizzas. The first one was a traditional Pepperoni. The dough was excellent. What I was expecting in a rustic pizza. Great taste and baked to perfction. The sauce was also perfect with just the right amount of spices. The sauce on the pie was the right amount. Finally the cheese. Wow, they put a lot of cheese without overdoing it. The second Pizza we had was a "Tripleta Pizza." The Tripleta is a Puertorican sandwich that combines chicken, ham and beef. It comes on a slightly sweet roll similar to a French Baguette, slathered with a sauced made out of ketchup, mustard and mayo, then topped with thin crispy fried potato sticks. Pirilos has take the Tripleta to new high by making a Tripleta Pizza including the pototato sticks. It was better than the sandwiches. Beer was cold and reasonably prices. They had the Pirilo Lager on special 2 for $5.00 I went there for lunch. Make sure you are there exactly when the open at 12:00 noon. The place packs fairly quickly. read more

This restaurant is small but welcoming in the middle of Viejo San Juan. I chose this restaurant because I love pizza, but specially because after visiting the two castles (San Cristobal and San Felipe), I needed carbs for energy. I believe Pirilo is a 5 minute drive from Castillo San Felipe and a 3 minute walk from the umbrella street. Anyway, I got really fast service which was great since we were starving. We ordered appetizers which came out super fast, two pizzas, and a lasagna. Fantastic flavor, great friendly service, and I could tell the food was super fresh. The one negative thing is that the restaurant needs an update with its furniture and wall decor. This was the best food we had while visiting Old San Juan. I am vegan and our waiter was SO nice and knowledgeable about what was vegan and their options. I got the vegana pizza with tomato sauce instead of hummus. My mom (not vegan) got the empanadas and said they were the best she's ever had. Everyone there had a smile, was incredibly kind and friendly, and the experience was overall lovely Another plus was that everyone spoke both english and spanish. You can't beat the atmosphere here. The upstairs looks like something straight out of a movie. The pizza was delicious, and the empanadillas were incredible! We got 2: spinach, and meat and cheese. I could have eaten many more of those! We got a half pepperoni half chorizo pizza, and while we wouldn't get the chorizo agin, we both loved the pepperoni. The crust and sauce were delicious as well at the pepperoni themselves! As New Yorkers - we are picky on pizzas. This place pleased even the most jaded of slice consumers at our table. There wasn't a slice left on our simple pie of cheese and arugula. We also ordered the manchego, cream cheese and beef empanadas as an appetizer. It was served with a cilantro dipping sauce. While I'm sitting on 6 feet from the cooler, I don't have my glasses and hard to see exactly what is what (embarrassing to say the least) I know my beers fairly well and normally don't ask for assistance as I don't want to be "that" guy. The staff upstairs quickly pulled out about 8 different IPAs after asking what style of beer I was looking for and Giving a well educated and experienced run down of each different beer. It really meant a lot to me that the staff took their time to explain the simple things to just another customer. I always appreciate a pizza with a good foundation and the crust at Pirilo Pizza Rustica was very good. Stumbled upon this restaurant while exploring Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan) with my husband and sister-in-law. If you're looking for a decent place to eat that is NOT a tourist trap, this is it, guys - look no further. The first floor seemed lightly occupied with diners, but little did we know that Pirilo also had a cute second floor. The second floor is a much better option to dine in compared to the first floor several reasons: 1. The second floor is actually room temperature, whereas the first floor has AC on full-blast. It's HELLA cold down there. 2. It's more open on the second floor. 3. The lighting is WAY better on the second floor. Let's get right onto the food: Calzone Queso ($9.00) - It's humongous and I mean, HUMONGOUS. I think the calzone was bigger than my husband's face. The calzone is served with marinara sauce and the cheese is melted perfectly. Warning: LOTS of cheese included. If you're lactose intolerant, don't even think about it. Empanadillitas Argentinas ($5.50) - Yummy in my tummy! Served with two small empanadas and a cup of great cilantro sauce. Pulpo a la Gallega ($10.00) - Potatoes and octopus served Spanish-style. A little too salty but still quite delicious. Papitas Pirilo ($3.50) - Personally, this was my favorite dish of the night because I just love fries... and Pirilo makes fries super thinly and slightly crunchy! Also served with their house cilantro sauce. The one thing we did not like about this place was the service. We had to wait for our check to come longer than we had to wait for our food, which is kind of a no-no. But who knows? Maybe this is just the way it's done here. On the short-list of foods I wouldn't have planned on eating in Puerto Rico, pizza would be near the top. Not that it wouldn't be there or wouldn't be good, but we usually focus on local or local-ish foods when we visit new places, and pizza wasn't on the radar. We couldn't decide on a spot for lunch when the overflow crowd caught our eyes, though, and after checking out reviews like this one (not as cleverly written, mind you), we decided to pop in. Best. Decision. Ever. First, the drinks: They have a great craft beer selection with options from Europe to Oregon, as well as a full bar and wines. We ordered some sangria, which for some odd reason comes with slivered almonds and sesame seeds, and it was good, not great. The menu selection for pizzas was pretty vast and offered a lot of unique options, with combos offering everything from chimichurri and skirt steak to alfredo and mushrooms to our selection, vodka sauce with cheese and arugula. The crust was crispy on the outside, pillowy and chewy on the inside, just like I like, and all people like except for weirdos. You're not a weirdo, are you? No? You'll like this crust. It was strong enough to hold up the toppings, but the generous amount of the latter made it easier to eat the first few bites with a knife and fork. My wife and I split a small, and it was a good size for us to devour. Seeing the larges going to tables around us was humbling; they were massive! The prices were more than reasonable considering the generous portions and superb quality, but if you want to save a few bucks and settle for crap, there's a Pizza Hut just down the street.
