I really wanted to try shrimp and grits without bacon. I know that smoky bacon creates that classic "southern comfort" flavor but I prefer letting shrimp shine. The chef was a little skeptical about my request but he still allowed me to order it without bacon. I added a touch of Cholula for smoky heat and created a Mediterranean-forward, chopped tomato rich flavor. The first time I went here, it was fantastic! The owner was very friendly and made sure we felt welcomed. It was fairly busy at lunch during the week, but we were able to grab a table and had our smoothies to sip on while we waited. The second time we went, the owner wasn't there. It was on a weekend and the place was extremely busy and very loud. Many people sitting at tables working on laptops and not eating. So, we were not able to get a table for a while. I find that the presence of the counter gives it a cafe vibe that makes it very easy to feel comfortable as a solo diner. The shakshuka was full of value not just from a flavor and freshness standpoint; you also get a great mix of carbs, fats, and protein in this dish, which I really appreciate as a solo diner. Oftentimes, you go out on your own and have trouble deciding what to order because many dishes are huge and either really carb-forward, fat-forward, or protein-forward, and often not super nutritious.
