I used to love this place. I'd get my gyro delivered to work and people would be jealous looking at it. It is the Greek version of the monster burritos you get in California. Over the last few years they have steadily declined. I have gone from going there once a month to once every 6 months, because I get a gyro craving and hope they've improved. Nope. Yesterday I ordered a gyro and the extra pitas and sauce. That's because I can literally make 3 gyros out of 1 the way they stuff it so full of meat and veggies. And it was indeed still a monster gyro. Only I had several burned pieces of meat, and I do mean burned. And the tzatziki sauce was watered down horribly. It's in a random location, it doesn't have a lot of space and isn't the cleanest place, but it has surprisingly good food with exceptional value especially when utilizing the Yelp check-in offer. Came in for dinner and ordered the 2 Gyro Plates Yelp special. I requested to substitute fries on one of the plates, which cost a couple bucks extra. The food came out in good time, and wow, was it a lot! Everything was piled on that it seemed more like a portion for four people rather than two. The lamb was thick, the pita and fries crisp, the rice flavorful, and the salad filling. We had to go to the cart with boxes readily available to pack what we couldn't finish. I don't mind food establishments attached to a gas station, but this place was pretty dirty on the inside and not well kept. The menu is simple, but the prices are pretty expensive...but I will say that the portion is larger than normal....but quantity doesn't supercede quality for me. I ordered the falafel sandwich....at $10 it should be good..but it was less than stellar. Under a mound of cucumbers and lettuce, I found the falafel...I believe two very large undercooked pieces. There was one person working both the counter and the kitchen, but, he was able to serve 3 different tables at the same time. Went in today and ordered two gyro plates with a hummus appetizer assuming I could use the yelp check in offer with my order. Come in to find out that they no longer accept the offer and that they haven't for a very long time. I felt outraged and asked for the total price before storming off (I felt the false advertising was a major red flag). I immediately felt remorseful and went back in to pay because the price disparity wasn't too bad. After years of trying out different Greek fare joints around San Diego county, I've decided to bump Pita King up to five stars because it hella deserves it. I've gone to many other Greek food restaurants but no one can top this place. The owner is a really nice/cool dude and the cashier girl is pretty nice as well, she's also cute btw (x ha. The chicken kabobs and beef souvlaki is pretty damn good, but my favorite thing here is the lamb/beef gyro sandwich or plate, either one is effin' amazing. Best tasting gyro I've ever had is from here and I am not being hyperbole here, I'm being straight the eff up, BS aside. Not too greasy but not dry either, seasoning is on point, and the abundant amounts piled on is makes it that much better. If you're looking for your favorite Greek joint come here and make sure you're really hungry, otherwise, plan to get a to go box because with the copious amounts of food they serve here, you might not finish (unless you're a good eater like me). This place gets high marks for gyro sandwich/wrap. The meat was extremely tender and seasoned very well. The portion size for this gem was incredible. Easily enough to divide into two for a couple. I had mine with feta cheese. Very very good We also ordered a chicken plate that came with rice, pita bread, chicken, a few large cut vegetables and a salad. The chicken itself, while tasty from the grill was definitely on the dry side. The vegetables (artichoke and bell peppers) were a little short on quantity but good. I'm not a great fan of rice so I can't comment on the taste or authenticity of that. Salad was fine with an oil/vinegar dressing. The above along with a greek salad plate came to $31. A little on the pricey side for take out food, but the quantity is there to make it somewhat of a value. If the guy can nail the chicken down (maybe employing some dark meats) then I would be more inclined to try that again. As it stands for now, I will certainly be back for the gyro sandwich. We had the vegetable platter (lots of vegetarian options) and the gyro plate. The meat was delicious; it came with yellow rice (wasn't expecting that - but it was good). This place is run a down establishment. The entrance of the restaurant is dirty unused appliances is everywhere ceiling fans on tables, one can only imagine the back area. I am really surprised this place hasnt been reported. We used to love this place, all for supporting local business. However, this place has really gone down hill. This place is my definition of a hole in the wall... and there's literally a hole in the bathroom wall, Haha. When I first walked in, it was an eye sore. The restaurant is in very bad shape from the ceiling to the walls with peeling paint and cleanliness issues (especially the bathroom). But the food was absolutely to die for! It's on the expensive side (no pricing on menu!) but the serving size is HUGE. I ate my Lamb/Beef Gyro for lunch and dinner today. It was massive. I will probably crave their food! Unfortionatly, there were no soda cups or straws for fountain drink. We should have gotten bottle drinks. We kept having to refill a tiny water cup with soda since we paid for that. It had no ice so the guy had to get us ice. Customer service was honestly fantastic. Everything was great except the restaurant itself. This is the first time I ordered from Pita King. During this COVID time has me looking for new places for take out. Here are my thoughts on Pita King. The gyro meat is delicious, flavorful and juicy. I keep going back for "one more slice". The steak is also yummy. It's really tender and well seasoned. The grilled veggies were amazing. They came on the gyro salad, which was a good size. The olives were tasty and the tomatoes also. There's roasted cloves of garlic - that was a pleasant surprise. (I like garlic.) In the future, I'd recommend getting the salad dressing on the side completely along with the feta. There's a combination that I cannot pinpoint that I do not care for. The salad dressing is okay - there's a honey mustard tang to it. Which I have never tasted - perhaps my Greek pallet is uncultured. The feta was all squashed and I had to work to get underneath it. The tzatziki sauce was on point ! I dipped the meat in it and made tiny gyros I'll return for sure. Best part of the meal : the gyro meat! And the fermented pickles. Also! I have ordered on grub hub and in person to go, probably wouldn't eat in only because it's behind a gas station but for someone who's been the Middle East and had authentic Mediterranean food, this Greek food hits the spot!
