I ordered a peppers and mushroom giant slice for the second one, what they gave me was sausage and mushroom. I didn't see they made the order wrong until I got home bc they gave me the pizza boxes taped up and I didn't open them up. Plus I came in at 9pm and the guy working the front was already pushing me out the door after I ordered. I asked for napkins once my order was done and he said "we've already closed the lobby". My fiancé and I were looking for a local Italian spot to try since we are semi new to Costa Mesa. The first time we tried this place we ordered a pizza with pepperoni and mushroom which was really good. Then we decided to try their sub sandwiches my fiancé got a " meatball" which didn't taste or look like actual meatballs, not to mention the flavorless marinara. I was in the mood for pasta. I wanted to try a place that I haven't been. Pizza D'Oro kept coming up in a few searches. I ended up getting the Saturday special which was the garlic shrimp scampi, garlic bread, and Italian house salad. I was surprised by low prices for the high-quality food that you get. Most places are charging $7 to $10 more for similar menu items. I'm not sure if it's just being from Seattle or I expected to be more. I am not sure how they are able to keep there cost low. I love a good, old fashioned pizza joint. You know, the ones with local soccer team photos on the wall and the same regular customers every week? This place has that warmth. Still a favorite place to go for a single slice of pizza. The Big Slice combo doesn't come with a soda anymore, but still includes a side salad and one-topping choice (additional toppings are extra but worth it.) They also have a GIANT slice, but I tend to be full from the big. I always get Italian ranch with my salad and it's a good dressing choice. There are different specials every day of the week. The lasagna special for Sunday is delicious and baked to perfection. Went with 2 friends for lunch. Walked in and immediately greeted by the owner Phillip with a big smile. He came over and took our drink orders and we started going over the lunch menu. He brought our drinks and asked if we had any questions and to try and "stump" him with a laughter that was very comforting. He got a bit distracted for an employee wasn't showing up. But he stepped up and took our order for the giant pizza lunch combo. We ate our salad and couldn't believe our eyes when the pizza showed up! Ok some people's version of giant differ! I asked for black olives to go with my sausage and only charged and extra $2. The lunch deal was $13.50 and an extra $2 for the olives! It was convenient to place the order over the phone and the food was hot & ready for pick-up on time. Note that the email listed did not seem to work (at least for them so it's best to call). Pick-up went smoothly; the worker was very friendly and polite. I ordered my pizza so I cannot speak on their service or ambience. But I can speak on their pizza...most notably the sauce. I am, as I've said over and over again, a North Jersey, Italian, Pizza Snob...but I can adapt. However there are a few mortal sins you do not commit with pizza. In this case, it was the sauce!!!!!! It had so much sugar in it they mine as well have used ketchup. I couldn't finish one piece. Maybe some people like that, because maybe some people don't like pizza...but I feel like too much of this sauce would give me diabetes. Pizza sauce DOES NOT NEED SUGAR!! It should have a little "tang" to it. And the sauce, carries the flavor of the entire pie. I also wasn't crazy about the "papa johns" style of cheese. Like, u take a circle of cheese and paste it to a pie. Idk...they have great reviews, and a lot of people like them. But as a Sicilian I just couldn't get over the sauce. Also, and I don't know how this is possible, but the basil they used had almost no flavor at all. Unfortunately, the lasagna was an edible. The pizza crust was so hard. You couldn't bite. The only thing that was Edible was their bread. When our waiter came back to check on us and to see if he wanted a box, I quietly told him we didn't enjoy the lasagna and he took the bill back. I thought he was going to subtract from the bill, but my my surprise, he didn't. He said it was at the discretion of the manager. I spoke to the manager who refused to give me his name and said if we would have mentioned it earlier, he could've done something about it, he told me to , "please pay the bill and he's sorry that we didn't enjoy the mail". Thus causing me to initiate writing this review and not recommending this particular Pizza d'oro to be patronized! After spending a few weeks on the East Coast happily bouncing from one delicious Pizzeria to another-- when I reached California, I searched for a new spot to try out. I googled a few and came across 'Pizza D'Oro' on Baker Street in Costa Mesa, which is 35 minutes north so we stopped in at 3:30 on a Monday afternoon so it wasn't that busy. First impression is one of an old-style pizza restaurant (from my youth) which feels homey and comfortable with photos on walls, specials on chalkboards, and a menu located under the plastic table topper. As soon as we opened the door we were invited to sit down at any open table and since it's a smaller room and 4 tables were occupied, we opted for a booth closest to the kitchen. My husband ordered spaghetti with meatballs which came with two slices of garlic bread. Since it was still their lunch menu, the plate cost only $12.50 which is really unheard of nowadays, and a very pleasant surprise! I had their 'giant' slice of pizza (with 2 toppings) which comes with a garden salad made of iceberg lettuce, cheese, shredded carrots, a few slices of pepperoni, and Italian Ranch dressing, it was cold, fresh and delicious and it also came with a (refillable) soda ALL for $14.65 (price reflects two toppings which cost extra) Let me say, for a mega slice it was very good but I bet if I ordered a whole pie, it would've been even tastier! Our server, Garrett, was very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the establishment and their food. He had told us about how this establishment has been around for 50 years and their meatball recipe has been passed down for generations. I told him it was our first time visiting, and after Googling and reading Yelp reviews, we decided to stop in! As we were talking to him, I mentioned the crust was excellent, and the underside was perfectly cooked. The meatballs were tender and the sauce was very good, not overly spiced, not too sweet, just right! As we were talking to Garrett, the owner, Phil, came by and thanked us for the compliments we were giving Garrett. I told him to keep doing whatever it is he's doing because they've got it down to a science. I will say this is probably the one of the BEST VALUES in Orange County! This review is long overdue. My dad has been getting our huge family the party/king size pizzas since I was a little girl. It's delicious. Today was my first time dining in as I was craving some pasta. The giant slice of pizza is literally GIANT. The server offered to cut it for us when she heard we'd be sharing and even then they were still huge! The spaghetti was delicious, the meat sauce is to die for! I got the Alfredo, I will say it was lacking some sauce.. and asked the server for an extra side of sauce. They brought it out at no extra charge, and it was delicious after that!! I've been eating at this little place since they opened around 1978-79, when owner Nick (RIP) was there every day. I lived in Costa Mesa until 1990, and was a regular customer. Now live in South OC, but come here whenever I'm in Costa Mesa. I usually order the spaghetti with sausage & peppers, or chicken Alfredo, lasagna or so many other things. But this past Monday, we tried the spaghetti with mushrooms & sausage. OMG, I may have to move back to Costa Mesa. DELICIOUS!!! My suggestion is that you try this place.
