If I could have given ZERO stars I would have but thought this be more impactful. My 7 year old 55 lb mix was on leash on my street and attacked by a neighbor pit bull OFF LEASH. My dog is currently undergoing $1000 worth of surgery due to the attack. Plano Police came out immediately and told me Animal Control would visit to make sure the other dog had its shots. Animal Control has not visited my neighbor OR me. I was told by the person answering the phone that there is nothing they could do about dog on dog crime. Ok, South Dallas - you have nothing on a Plano. Let your dogs run off leash in packs. No problem. I am disgusted beyond exasperation but thankful for the Plano Police (officer Hogan) who came out to check on my dog. read more

One of the worst shelters I've experienced is the Plano Shelter I have several parrots and I have tried multiple times to adopt a very specific parrot that is there at this time their so-called "specialist " by the name of Debbie told me that I had to provide vet records owning parrots ...DUH !! At no time should anyone ever take a healthy parrot to a shelter only to be exposed to some of the most deadliest disease and viruses !!! in my case my birds let me trim their nails and beaks although the website says they maintain a certain dollar amount for the adoption fee this bird was $450 which I was fine paying to not only provide a forever home but to make sure it did not go to a bird flipper I offered multiple times for someone to come and do a home visit as well as a FaceTime call and if there was an alternative method to prove that I had experienced please let me know and I would do it.,I spoke with six people Ashley, Sydney And Debbie only gave me one answer " he's still here" no matter how many questions I had or request to please call me so we can speak verbally...And I left multiple messages for the shelter administrator to call me ...at no time has this person ever reached out to me !! I was given multiple means of adopting this bird and every time I followed through I was told there was a different hoop to jump through ,,I don't think they care about providing adequate homes for the animals .....the people there do the minimum if anything to make sure the animals they have their find adequate homes.. I really believe the don't care about the animals And I beg that everyone reading this please pray for the animals that are there because I have not come across anyone that cares enough to make sure they are adopted... read more

The older women, who I'm guessing is the managers at this faculty, is extremely rude. I visited this adoption Clinic in late June with hopes of having an experienced staff help guide me in finding the right dog, but this women's over baring safety protocol made just simply trying to meet the dog seem impossible. I was very up front about living in an apartment and my unpredictable work hours. I specify told her these details to make sure I can properly care for the dog. After this introduction process, she told me I needed to make sure that my apparent complex was okay with adopting the dogs they recommended despite their breed and weight restrictions. I completely understood and returned the following week after taking to my apartment complex. I wanted to meet Mocha, a pit bull terrier mix. I provided the attendant with a signed off adoption card for Hexum, a larger pit bull mix from the farmers branch adoption center I had visited the day before. My complex okayed me to adopt him or any other dog similar to his bread and weight (70lb.) she said I could meet Mocha and I decided to have a quick look around before meeting her. When I return to the deck, the older adoption attendant greeted me with a simple "can I help you?." I showed her Hexum's signed off adoption card and told her I'd like to meet Mocha. Since I had already explained my adoption details to her in my precious visit, I though she would be on the same page as her co worker. She told me she couldn't accept this because it didn't lift the breed restriction despite both dogs being pit bulls. This completely contradicts what I was just told and tells me that she just flat out didn't want to adopt a dog to me. The facility is clean and the other two workers at the desk were very nice, but I would not recommend coming to this facility because of this workers lack of customer service. read more

Our adoption experience and contact after was way above my expectations. I adopted 2 kittens on feral who had been returned by some impatient heartless people. Who has turned out to be my best friend and the love of my life. The other a domestic Tabby calico . The staff on adoption day was very kind to me and my 2 kids. When I went back to pick up the Tabby who had to stay to be spayed she was ready when they said she would be. The shelter was clean and not over crowded. The employees all seemed to have a genuine love for the animals and desire to place them in the right family. I lost my paperwork on one of my kittens and emailed Sunday night 5 minutes before closing because the phone was busy and my kittens had an appointment at the vet Monday morning. I was shocked and blown away when Kristin from the shelter responded 40 minutes later with the rabies document and shot records. They were closed and she could have left my email sit there but she didn't I know she had to look up the records from back in July , if not for her going the extra mile I would have had to reschedule their vet appointment So they should get 6 stars and extra one for Kristin read more

I'll take one of each please!! JK.. I wish. Anyway, for a city shelter, this place is awesome. It's super clean, staff is very friendly, pet runs are a reasonable size. This is actually one of the few places where having a lot to choose from is a bad thing. Yes, there is sadly a lot to choose from here, because there are so many sweet faces that need homes. They have rooms available that you can sit in with a pet to see if they are right for your family. The staff is very patient and doesn't bother you. Understandably, since many of the pets come in as strays, they don't know a whole lot about the pets history. Other than that, it's your typical animal shelter. This is a great place to encourage you to adopt, don't shop! Tons of beautiful furbabys are here waiting for you to take them home. read more

My parents were looking for a playmate for their cat Felix. He lost his best friend Cotton about a year ago and didn't play much after that. We got the new kitten that we named Smokey from the Plano Animal Shelter. The place was super clean and very easy to see/ play with the animals. We immediately were happy that she was going to receive her shots, microchip and get fixed before we took her home. The adoption fee is very reasonable considering all that you get. The only problem I had is that she got released the day of her surgery. I think it would have been better the next day. We love her so much and are very glad we went with this place. read more

I adopted a domestic shorthair cat from these guys last week. The volunteers were very helpful. I wish I could have taken every kitty home with me. They seem to take very good care of their animals and they don't mind you spending lots of time there getting to know them so you can find the purrfect match. There was one guy that seemed to not like cats and was quite vocal about it. That kinda bugged me. All in all it was a good experience and would highly recommend adopting from this shelter to anyone. read more

The employees at this establishment are super nice and helpful. Went in initially looking for a dog. Found one in the stray dog section. We knew he wouldn't be available till he was checked, lady told us to come back Saturday and he'd be up for adoption. Came back, and we were told he was not available nor would he be any time in the near future. That was a little upsetting BUT had that not happen, We wouldn't have found our perfect little kitten. He is just the best and I couldn't be happier! I don't think they should have the stray dogs viewable if they are not for adoption, or at least let potential adopters know ahead of time that the strays section is not available. She is a peculiar little Persian who likes to use a doggie pee pad and go out to my courtyard also Dolly has diabetes which no one bothered to take her to their vet to check her out. Dolly now Paris has been part of our lives for 2 years almost she probably will not be with us another year but she has brought much joy and she is happy in her Yorkie family .. I stop by this shelter once in a while just to look at their animals because that's how much I love them. This shelter uses their space efficiently but not in an overly crowded way by having rows and rows of individual spaces for animals. All the individual spaces have number on them and that's how you identify the animal when you have any questions to ask the desk about, not by their names. There are small descriptions about each animals posted by their space also. The people there are really honest about the information they tell you and won't be scared to share any of their bad histories/habits which I really appreciate. There are several rooms where you could ask to take the animals to In order to get to know them better OR to take them outside in the fenced areas. I suggest asking to take them outside to let them take a break and roam free from being in small space! They have other section towards the back where they keep the stray/found animals temporarily as well. They also offer variety of services such as micro chipping for very cheap price! (I think it was around $15) Overall I think this shelter is very well-kept and has an efficient system without being too overbearing. read more

worse animal experience of my life. rude nasty people. did not provide promised tag, collar etc. stupid guy at front desk who brought out my kitty ( 12 pound cat) too stupid to close cardboard lid correctly - caused near tragedy when i removed her from my car. horrible. they did not even know what food they fed their animals so i could change her diet correctly. and she got sick. AND, not noticeable when the brought her into the filthy urine-stench ' visitor ' area, is this poor kitty has a spinal abnormality and she cannot jump. meaning she cannot even jump on hassock or chair. heart-breaking. of course i have already bonded with her. nasty people. read more

This is a great no-kill shelter. Clean, sweet volunteers, and helpful staff. I adopted my first shelter pet from here and the experience was really awesome. $80 included the adoption fee, vaccinations, and spay/neuter. It didn't cover deworming or heart worm tests, but that's the risk you take when adopting AND that's why you adopt... to help and rescue. My dog ended up having tapeworms, which we found out after immediately taking her to the vet for a check up. It's an easy treatment and we were expecting her to have some type of parasites, since she was a stray. Highly recommend this place :) read more

Drove an hour to see about adopting a dog for them to tell me a parent has to meet the dog since I still live at home. (Despite me being 18) So I made an appointment an hour and a half later so my mom could meet the dog and within that time they let someone else adopt the dog. I was searching for a kitty that I would fit the needs of our family. Good with dogs, affectionate, etc. The staff at Plano Animal Shelter made this so very easy. I believe that there were 7 kitties that test drove us, and the perfect fella found us! The attendant was very kind and helpful. She did not seem to mind bringing all those kitties to the visitation room and was very patient. All the cats looked very well cared for and given as much attention as possible. Our fella was a VIP and had been there since August 2013 and we adopted him in January 2014. Thanks to Plano Animal Shelter for keeping our special fella alive so that he could find us. The adoption procedure is painless, and the adoption fees cannot possibly cover the micro-chipping, alteration, vet check, shots and food that accrue with each animal. Since my kitty had been there so long, the adoption fee was reduced and I made a donation as well. I just wanted to try and help all the ones that were left behind. If I ever am in need of another pet, they will be the first shelter I use. read more

HORRIBLE. The staff is very rude not only to the customers but to the animals. The pets are in a dirty environment, my dog was in quarantine and was suppose to be taken care of but he came out losing over ten pounds and also had kennel cough. I had to take him to the vet after the shelter due to his sickness which they proved he had kennel cough. So not only was my dog in poor condition but it ended up costing me more money to treat him because they couldn't have a safe atmosphere for my dog. After reporting this to them, they responded very rudely not having any care at all that the animal was sick. They said he didn't act sick during his visit yet when I picked him up his eyes were droopy, he was coughing and overall in poor condition. My dog has never been sick the four years I have had him from a puppy, after keeping him here he became very sick. This is a horrible staff that doesn't take care of the pets. Please do not bring your animals here, they will not be in good hands. read more

There were four people there, with each of them giving out different information. Although I believe VERY MUCH in adopting animals, I can't begin to tell you the nightmare it has been with our puppy that came from the Plano Shelter. We met our new puppy and instantly fell in love. This sweet tempered guy was exactly the match we were looking for for our other dog. We knew he had a story (he was attacked and had some wounds over his body) and just really felt compelled to bring him home. But, that's when we found out just how sick he was. We asked about medication for the dog (what he had been on with his gaping wound) and were told that he had been on nothing (very very odd considering the severity of his wound). We were told he had a clean bill of health and had been tested and given shots, etc. Fine. First, the dog was covered in fleas. You might understand this in a shelter, so we didn't think too much of it and gave him a dip as soon as we got home that day. Soon after, I had a suspicion the dog was warm and might have a fever. Sure enough, he did. We thought stress or something. Later, we noticed green mucus pouring out of his nose. We immediately brought him to the vet. You guessed it, the pup has distemper, and a progressed level. Hard to imagine how they missed this! But, okay.... so we are working with this and still hoping for the best. Next thing that happened, the wound that we were told was "healing just fine" and "needed no medication" from the shelter busted open with puss and blood. The pup now has an hole the size of a nickle and as deep as the muscle in his neck. Poor thing. So we are treating that as well. This morning, he went out back as usual for his bathroom and we notice white rice like things crawling all over his stool. Tapeworm!!! The thing with tapeworm is if you did a simple fecal test (which should have been done at the shelter) it could have been found and treated WELL before this stage. The shelter simply just did not do it. I am so heartbroken for my pup, and even more concerned about the animals they have in their shelter right now! So, this is just a warning to anyone considering adopting from the Plano Shelter. If your heart tells you to adopt, please do! I think it is such a great thing. But please, please, PLEASE, be prepared that your new animal might have problems and be VERY sick when it is brought home. This shelter just seems to want to move animals, no matter what their condition. Take your pet IMMEDIATELY to a vet even if it seems healthy to get a complete check up (stool and all!). I can't stand to see an animal suffer the way mine has. We've barely had the pup for a week, and he just doesn't look like he's going to make it. We are still hoping for the best though and am glad we took him out of the condition he was in at the shelter were he surely would have been ignored if not put down already. read more

We visited a lot of shelters looking for the right dog for our family. The right one happened to be here :) Even if she wasn't, I would still compliment them! They have a great facility! Animals cages are kept clean, the set up is awesome, you don't have to hear and smell the animals when you walk in! They have yards in the back that are kept nicely and have toys so you can see how the animal responds with you and your family! A dear friend just tried to rescue a little kitten found on the side of the road. My friend called Plano Animal Services and was told it would OK to bring the animal in. When she did she was met by a terribly rude and condescending woman working the front who finally would not accept the kitten after-all. So the future of this pet is uncertain. I adopted a cat in October from this shelter. He is the most awesome cat and had been there for over a month so I was glad to rescue him! That being said, he is a long haired cat and had poop matted to his bottom, fleas and a tapeworm. I adopted him on a Friday and discovered the worm segments (gross) the next day. They are closed Monday so Tuesday i took him in for his rabies shot and asked them if they could treat him for the worm (pills) and they asked the vet and he said 'no'... So I took him to the East Plano Animal Hospital that does a well check for the shelter pets for free! Plus, they shaved and cleaned his bottom and treated his worm for dirt cheap:) So, I love my kitty but not the fact that he had a tapeworm and poop matted on his bottom! Edit: I had to put him to sleep yesterday (1/12/13) due to kidney failure. The shelter estimated his age at 7 years old but he was actaully 12. I really wish they checked and treated animals before adopting them. Even though my family only had him for 3 months, we all grew very attached. So painful:( poor kitty... read more

I made several trips to the Plano Animal Shelter before finding the perfect dog for me. The volunteers at this not for profit, no kill shelter are incredible. The pets are housed in individual roomettes with elevated sleeping platforms. You may ask to spend time with the animal of your voice in a private room. It is a clean and humane shelter. The cost of buying a chipped, vaccinated and licensed, neutered pet is extremely reasonable. My Bella was $80.00 the high end there. She is a purebred Weimaraner with the sweetest loving personality. I am very grateful to the Plano Animal Shelter for bringing me and my best friend together. read more

I got my best friend from this shelter, there's not enough praise in the world I can give to The Plano Animal Shelter. All of the employees were helpful and kind they helped me with my first time adopting a dog. They helped me find the perfect puppy for me, which happened to be Lucy! This shelter is well kept and the people that run it are genuinely nice, and obviously passionate about their jobs. I couldn't be more thankful for the services they do for our community. When you walk in, you'll be greeted by the cat adoption section. This area is very well maintained with no odor, and the cats are behind glass. It's easy to take a look and see which one you'd like to meet. You can visit with one for a while to see if you'd be a good fit. It's great. The cats also have small box-trays of cat litter that get changed out extremely often. The dog area reeks, but the enclosures still looked pretty clean. There's not a whole lot you can do to get rid of the stench of dog waste in an indoor environment that houses so many dogs. Just prepare for it -- it will hit you like a wall. The shelter rep was very up-front with me about my cat's history when I asked. They were also very quick to let me know that any medical care is very minimal after an animal is taken in, so I needed to take my cat to a vet ASAP. I am going to be scheduling my appointment with the vet shortly to make sure that if there are any hidden health issues I'll be able to tackle them. I've had my new cat for nearly a week and I am just so elated to have her! Knowing the history of how she was found and what her time at the shelter was like has helped me make her transition easier. Be prepared if you adopt and the animal still needs to be spayed or neutered. You will pick them up the day OF the surgery and they will be super drugged out. It will be hard to watch, but the techs are great at letting you know proper after care. My cat was upset at being in the carrier and insisted on being out and about, so I had to hold her in the dark for a couple of hours while the anesthetic wore off. Luckily she was more than happy to be held after a couple of minutes of her trying to stumble around. All of the staff were as friendly, helpful, and patient with me as they could be. read more

Good luck getting your pets back if they get loosethey charg $100 per pet and if you have more than one they will not hesitate to go inside your home/fenced backyard when you are not there to get any other animals. Crazy place! Are you robbery? Getting your own lost dogs back will charge you $75 per pet and plus the cage fee for just one night! And I don't think they treat dogs very good, after we get our puppies back, they just can not wait to drink water!!! So they didn't drink any water for the whole night??? This was the first "pound" I have ever been to and it was better than what I expected! The staff seem to know the animals pretty well and they all looked decently healthy. I was able to adopt a dog today and I get him next week! I really like the fact that the price covers shots and neutering. The two complaints I have is that the meet and greet room smelled nasty and the shelter doesn't do full body exams, which is understandable. Overall a very great experience! read more

This is SUCH a nice shelter with volunteers constantly cleaning and loving on all of the dogs. We found the perfect little Cairn Terrier mix and have been visiting her every day since we adopted her (she can't come home with us until she is spayed). The front desk is so helpful and give you LOTS of coupons: free vet visit, tennis ball, pet insurance suggestions, microchip, tips on crate training, coupons for free night of boarding, coupon for free bath, etc etc etc....the list of freebies from local businesses goes on and on. At a November 2013 adoption event at the Plano Animal Shelter we adopted two male kittens from separate litters had been caged together along with their two sisters since arriving at the Shelter. We adopted Oscar and Felix as companions for our adult cat after her previous companions had passed away. Oscar and Felix were extremely close and we didn't want to see them loose their best friend by breaking their attachment. Unfortunately in December 2013 Felix began to suffer recurring respiratory infections and after repeated treatments became less and less effective we asked our vet at the Plano Cat Hospital to run what ever tests were necessary to try and determine the cause of the problem. This past week Felix tested positive for the Feline Leukemia Virus, we immediately had Oscar tested and he also tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Feline Leukemia is an incurable, Extremely Contagious, and ultimately fatal virus easily spread through saliva for which there is no treatment. Our older cat Isis had previously been vaccinated against the feline leukemia virus however the vaccination is 80 percent effective at best. After the heartbreak of loosing two of our closest friends we must now endure watching Felix's declining health and Oscar's inability to understand why his best friend can no longer play and cuddle as they had done all their lives. We called the Plano Animal Shelter the day we learned of their condition to inform them of this situation and that Oscar and Felix's siblings were probably infected as well, along with the possibility that any other cats who were in contact with them or had visited with potential adoptive parents in the same visiting room would have been exposed to this virus and may be infected as well. The response from the staff member at the Plano Animal Shelter was " I'll let my supervisor know" before he ended the call. I strongly urge anyone who has adopted a cat or kitten from the Plano Animal Shelter with in the last six months to have their pet tested for Feline Leukemia immediately along with any other cats they have been in contact with. The failure of the Plano Animal Shelter to perform this simple test which requires only a few drops of blood and takes about ten minutes has led to the adoption of an unknown number of Cats and Kittens who may be infected with one of the most contagious and fatal virus's in the feline world. This demonstrates a complete disregard of safe animal adoption protocol and lack of any attempt to contain this highly infectious, contagious, and ultimately fatal disease on the part to the Plano Animal Shelter. It also shows a total lack of empathy on the part of the Plano Animal Shelter for both for the suffering of the infected animals, and the extensive expense and the emotional anguish endured by the human companions who have come to love them. It is it's own form of cruelty for both the animals and their adoptive family, all for the sake of a few dollars and a few minutes time. read more
