I got an iced latte and croissant, and my friend got a strawberry matcha. I loved both the latte and croissant, but the matcha fell short. They use strawberry "discs" that include freeze-dried strawberries and other things, but it doesn't really bring the strawberry flavor. I think using fresh strawberries would make the drink so much better. The baristas are so kind and the space itself is great for studying/working. As someone who lives for working in coffee shops and trying all the creative lattes, Play Coffee completely exceeded my expectations! I went all out and tried three drinks: the Volcano Latte, Shaken Maple Latte, and Strawberry Matcha Latte. While I'm equally obsessed with both coffee and matcha, the Shaken Maple Latte stole the show. The orange rind and cinnamon garnish? Chef's kiss. The maple flavor was beautifully subtle, not overpowering, and let the quality of their coffee beans shine through. I also treated myself to the cardamom pastry, and wow, it was even more delicious than it was photogenic (and it was VERY photogenic). Not much seating indoors but they have a nice semi-private outdoor patio. We ordered the volcano latte + 1 shot of espresso and the strawberry matcha latte. They had great flavor, but for a latte. I would like a minimum of 12 ounces. The latte Art is exceptional, not often seen with such fine linage. I liked the drink better in the ceramic cup rather that the paper cup, it retained the heat much better. I really want to try whatever is brewed with the machine with the handle pull, so I'll be back for that. The staff is pretty friendly and they definitely take care of business. Theres a parking lot across the street or you can find street parking nearby! service was great, everyone was nice, friendly and very knowledgeable. I'm sorry but this place is not for me. I don't understand why this place is popular. I feel bad saying it but it was the worst coffee I've ever had. It was weirdly sour and bitter. The interior was cold and nothing but cement. Not a very welcoming environment but I guess it's modern if you like that. The location is good but only for Saturday mornings when the farmers market is across the street, otherwise it's out of the way and there's no parking. I was very impressed by their latte art, mug sizes, and drink quality-- they use ceremonial grade matcha and their baristas are very detail-oriented when it comes to modifications to sweetness level, ice, etc. The patio area does get a bit loud since it's next to a busy part of the 133, but there is ample seating for dine-in and Play is conveniently located right across the street from the Laguna farmers market and the center of town. I love that this place has open air seating! It's a modern cafe with unique menu flavors from around the world. We ordered the iced maple matcha latte and hot sweet latte for our drinks. Drinks were 8/10. I wish they offered a cream top for my matcha. We also got a pistachio cream filled pastry and a financier cake. I appreciate that they have different flavors of baked goods. The yuzu croissant was SOO good with lil yuzu chunks that made it such a refreshing bite. Would go back just for that pastry. The staff are SO friendly and shoutout to Leon who explained to us everything about the menu and the sourcing of the ingredients. I'm very unimpressed by the matcha here. First of all they can't make the strawberry matcha with oat milk! I've had the regular matcha latte with oat milk twice and the vanilla matcha latte with oat milk once, and it always tastes sour and milky. I'm not giving any more chances haha. Also my friend got an herbal tea here and after even 20 minutes of steeping it was just plain hot water. The tea must have been old or something because it did not flavor the water AT ALL read more

Laguna Beach is already host to a local coffee hub of sorts. I'm obsessed with it and always give a new place a fair try, but we've hit a point where the answer to "do we really need another coffee shop here?" is "probably not". If you're going to stand out here, you need either have a great menu, high quality coffee, or be a community hub. Jedidiah, Moongoat, Rye Goods, Rapport, Laguna Coffee Company, etc all accomplish one or more of these, but this place feels like a modern trendy spot that would fit in better in LA. None of the drinks I've tried have hit, basics or specialty, and the food is skippable. Service was passable, but unfortunately it just doesn't stand out enough for me to go anymore. read more

I tried it out the first day they opened and asked for a large coffee to go. They only had very small cups so I decided to try it anyway and the coffee was very average/weak taste for a small $5 cup. I recommended to management they should offer a larger size and I was told thanks for the suggestion. I went again last week hoping to order a large coffee and wanting to give them another chance thinking the first day open is always tough ----and still----NOT AVAILABLE a large coffee. Ownership should try to accommodate their local residents for repeat business and charge more for the larger cup------it's not rocket science!! We were really excited to try this place after hearing so many great things, but unfortunately the experience was really disappointing. From the moment we asked the cashier (light brown very long hair). for help ordering and about their matcha, she came across as very dry and borderline rude, as if we were bothering her. What made it more uncomfortable was seeing her interact much more pleasantly with other customers. While the drinks were being made, we also noticed her hair brush over the top of a couple drinks (not ours), which raised concerns about cleanliness. The matchas themselves weren't our favorite but were okay. However, when we asked to have a drink remade, it came back with oat milk instead of almond milk, which added to the frustration. We spent around $60, and unfortunately the service completely overshadowed everything. Between the lack of basic customer service and concerns about hygiene, the overall experience felt unwelcoming. We may try again and hope for a better experience with a different barista. read more

Tried Play in Laguna Beach for the first time and had a mixed experience. Starting with the positives: there's plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, which is a big plus for Laguna. They're also open later than most coffee shops in the area, and the staff was genuinely nice and welcoming. Unfortunately, the coffee was a letdown. The espresso tasted overly acidic, which made it hard to enjoy. They also don't offer regular sugar, only syrup, which may work for some people but not if you prefer a classic coffee setup. I ordered the iced shakerato and it wasn't what I expected. It came with a twist of orange peel and leaned sweet. It wasn't bad, just not really a shakerato in the traditional sense, so it caught me off guard. Overall, it's a comfortable spot with good hours and friendly service, but the coffee didn't quite hit the mark for me.
