This was not for me. I have Holbox aguachile dreams (based in LA) and was looking for a fix in the Bay Area, but this was not it. I think the cocktail is too sweet (likely from the ketchup?), overall I think the seafood is a little too cooked in the sauce for me and I prefer a more raw forward version. Same goes for the aguachile add on - very very spicy (Tabasco forward?) and the shrimp is very cooked from the acid. May be different in person in the big goblet and the vibes and would give this place another chance for other dishes! read more

I have been coming here since before they had burned down and it might have been a blessing in disguise because the new Playa is beautiful! The bar set up is niiice. Seating feels similar to before, but upgraded. Our waitress (ugh forgot her name unfortunately, i remember her because she had braces & was so cute lol) but sooo sweet! Super attentive and just an angel! My bf ordered the margarita flight which I think he said wasn't on the menu anymore but she said she would get it for him anyway. A doll. He ordered the New York strip mash w/ veggies and of course didn't wanna share I ordered the Salmon mash and salad. Everything was fresh and juicy and so flavorful. But, there's one but, don't go after 10 pm, because the restaurant turns into a sort cantina. There's a lot of people drunk, screaming, music is so loud. Serves isn't attentive anymore more. Came in recently and they had great food!! We had the mixto cocktail which had shrimp and octopus it was fabulous!! Also shared the calamari which had a really nice light batter to it. I'm a regular at this place, so I've had consistently great service. I'm fluent in Spanish, and they appreciate this. My Canadian husband is not fluent in Spanish, but they appreciate the fact that he tries (and so do I). I usually order the camarones a la diabla, with the Nachos Playa Azul and they've been consistently good. Fresh oysters, not so much; I think they dump out the "liquor" so the oysters taste as though they were rinsed off. We also add a pitcher of Cadillac Margaritas, and they don't charge extra for salsa, chips or more tortillas the way other Mexican restaurants have begun to do. The major beef I have is that the noise level and lighting are horrific. They jack up the music unnecessarily loud, to the point that you can't hear the person across the table. They also self-describe themselves as a sports bar, but that's really not the case. They may have the game on, but the audio is replaced by cumbias coming out of the speakers. We've asked them on several occasions to turn down the music, which they've complied with; but, it's kind of a pain. Overhead lights make the place super bright, and doesn't really create the same ambience that the old Playa Azul did. All in all, a great place to take a family, but not a place for a romantic dinner. read more

Walked in last night at 11:30. Mind you they posted that they are closed at 12. I walk in and was not greeted at all; but instead was loudly informed "WE'RE CLOSED!" This Mission District seafood restaurant had previously burned down and I'd head good things about it so I finally went to their new and improved restaurant and it was an overall good experience. The brand new updated version is beautiful and modern inside with a huge selection of alcohol (a whole wall of it) and the food was good but a bit overpriced. The soup was $29, and instead of more fish or seafood, I mainly got a lot of carrots and zucchini. The flavor was good, and my friend and I shared the fried calamari as an appetizer, and the fried calamari was also quite tasty. I did not have a cocktail, but if I return I plan to try their cocktails since I saw colorful goblets at another table on my way out and they looked good. If you like seafood you might want to try this place since their selection if varied, but if you like to know how much you're gonna pay ask or pull up the electronic menu on your smartphone since the paper menu they provide you does not include any prices. I just don't like to be surprised like that. My husband recommended this restaurant as he came here years back with his parents. He remembers being an authentic Mexican restaurant. However the experience walking in today was very disappointing. Walking in we noticed how modernized it looks. The first thing to see is the long bar and the collection of alcohol (i guess they get a star for that) the bottles at the bar are nicely lined up. We started to look at menu since it's mainly seafood and decided to start with fried calamari. We ended up choosing shrimp appetizers (can never go wrong). The calamari was delicious and very crispy (i guess another star for that). The "Camarones Vallarta" (stuffed jalapeño with cheese) were big! One order of 4 was more than enough. The "Camarones con tosino" was nicely decorated on-top of mashed potatoes. Okay let me give them another star for presentation. The calamari and shrimp was nicely decorated. But overall i felt like everything needed more seasoning to match the image. Service was okay it seems like they are always walking face down or away from us in the table. read more
