Stopped in for a quick drink on a Saturday at around 6 PM, while waiting for our dinner reservation next door. Feel pretty clean for an NYC Irish pub, and it looked like a lot of people were ordering food there. I had a French Martini, which had a bit too much pineapple juice in it for my taste. But it's what you'd expect from a typical Irish pub. Don't expect expertly crafted cocktails, but do expect friendly service, which is what we got. They were also quick and attentive so what can you really complain about? I would have gotten a Guinness but we were about to have AYCE Japanese BBQ, so I didn't want to fill up on that. The food menu looked pretty good too, so I wouldn't mind coming back for a pint and some fish and chips or bangers and mash, the next time the mood strikes.

I needed a drink at 3am and I'm so glad Playwright Irish Pub was open and served until 3:30am. They had a good blend of beer on tap and mixed drinks. Playwright had good vibe music and the place was relatively clean for a bar. The bartender was quick to take our order, make our drinks, and close the tab. The recommended cocktails went well together. We tried the French Martini and the Big Apple Martini. The people were descent and there was no concern at the witching hour.

Definitely super loud but the bartenders were great and the nachos were good. It was a nice quick 30 min stop in.

Stopped in for a snack after walking along a street fair. The crabcake sliders were surprisingly good although they could just omit the bun. The onion rings and fries were listed in a way that made it seem like they came together but it was an either/or situation. The onion rings were fine anyway. Started getting crowded as we left presumably because the nearby theaters had let out after a weekend matinee so popular, but not too busy to not walk in.

I will make a liste what I think on come on lone with friend and family, great drink , great food when you Order have a amazing time also if you like sport TV is on who ever like sport, but the ny steak was good .! I mean good the taste of the meat was amazing! Don't forget the RED WINE !!!!! Awesome to have a good evening in experience! Have a fabulous night!!!!!!

I love this place. I dropped my wallet on 8th Ave. I have an app called Tile that locates my wallet. I followed that app to this pub. I am not sure why. In fact my wallet was found by an honest person who turned it in to the police with nothing missing even the money in it. But the staff at this pub which was filled with lively friendly clients was very sympathetic and supportive and even treated me to a free beer (without my wallet I had no money). I feel blessed that losing my wallet lead me to this pub. read more

Hole in the wall find in NYC. We were wandering around late after theatre and dropped in. It looks and smells like an Irish Pub. Stale beer and all. We had Shepard pie and a curry. Both were top notch. read more

Happy New Year, everyone! I attended a 40+ New Year's Eve Singles Party, Playwright on 31 DEC 2023. I will say that while Playwright has a decent-sized bar, an upstairs that is very accommodating to larger parties, & is in a fantastic location --I would say that it attracts an older, more mature crowd. Alcoholic Drinks: 3.7/5 It's likely the stress of such a busy night, impacted service, and quality of the drinks. They do have a great beer selection. I recommend keeping drink requests simple on very busy nights. Food: 2.5/5 We ordered BBQ Chicken Tenders, A mushroom, Swiss burger, & Chicken Eggrolls with Sriracha ketchup sauce (too spicy). I didn't enjoy the food. The environment was welcoming, the gentleman at the door were friendly, & the decor gave great vibes. I would recommend Playwright to mature New Yorkers, & any tourists who want that classic Irish Pub vibe. Parking: There is a public garage a few doors down, often it's first-come-first serve. I recommend using a Parking app. **I don't have pics of the food this time around. Overall Experience: 3/5 read more

Cute little spot next street over the crazy Times Square area. Our server was very nice. She was attentive with our drinks. Very knowledgeable of the menu. We had an issue above our heads with the air conditioner vent leaking condensation due to the humidity outside. Our server right away moved us to a new table with nothing but apologies. All 3 of us ordered the beef stew. Pretty amazing with a scoop of mashed potatoes in the middle of the bowl. We asked for some bread to dip into the gravy. The bread was really good too! After a long day walking the city sights, this meal satisfied our hunger and brought comfort, being far away from home. read more

- Bartender literally barks at me when I order a club soda and legit said I'd need to drink hard alcohol if I wanted to stay. When I replied that I wasn't drinking, he grudgingly poured the club soda - There was a mandatory 20% gratuity on our bill which I've never seen in all my years in New York City (other people ordered drinks that satisfied the bartender in terms of alcoholic content; we were a party of 4) - Had to flag the guy down to order any other drinks after the 1st round - Air conditioning was on barely enough to keep from sweating read more

My review for Playwright: Playwright Irish Pub is my go to pub whenever I go into the city. I've taken friends and family members whenever visiting NYC. I'm across the river. The drinks are always on point, you get what you ask for. I've ordered a variety of dishes from the kitchen and not a one has ever been a disappointment! Brianna, our usual bartender is phenomenal! She knows my cousin and I by name, her drinks are always as ordered, water available as she knows we always request some. Brianna always takes out some time to chat with us without neglecting the rest of her customers., The service workers are also very polite and courteous and always acknowledge our presence. My wife and I stopped in here for a bite and a drink. It's like four doors down from our hotel and we really enjoy Irish Pubs. The building is really neat. It has indoor seating and outdoor seating. The main building has at least three floors but I we never explored any floors aside from the main floor. The staff was very friendly and prompt. Our drink orders came out quickly and our food came our extremely fast. I don't think we waited a full ten minutes for our emails. The cider I had was likely the best I've ever had. I ordered a large pretzel and fries. Both were really good. My wife ordered a burger and she loved it. The mustard for the burger and pretzel was a very spicy mustard that was addictive but it will sure clear our nasal passages. LOL. I think it's more horseradish than mustard. Be careful with it. For dessert we shared a chocolate mousse cake and it was mouth watering. The bill was a tad steep but it was worth it. Refusing to honor the Yelp discount was a bit annoying but did take away from the experience. read more

It really hurts me to do this review because I am all about supporting local businesses and everything, but so much from my dining experience here just went wrong. 1. The food is simply dreadful. I had fried calamari and it was saltier than sea water and lacked flavor. Honeslty the worst fried calamari I have ever had 2. A member in our group didn't get her food only everyone else had finished eating (we waited 10 min for her already). Look, I think the server and bartender were super nice and all, but at least for my experience, they couldn't get the basics right. read more

On our recent trip to New York, this ended up being our favourite bar. We had lunch in here a couple of times and the food was great. The staff and the ambience in here are mainly what made us want to come back. One bartender in particular was called Al and he could not have been more helpful. Knows Nee York very well and helped provide us with some tips re the local area. I would highly recommend this place. Thank you guys read more

Stopped in here today. Service was awful, awful, awful. Had to flag our waitress / bartender down for EVERYTHING. We didn't even order a lot - A few drinks, wings & cheesesteak egg rolls. The food was straight up bad. I don't think they know what shepherd's pie is, but someone should tell them it has potatoes on top. The wing were edible, but no more than that. The drinks were okay but my old-fashioned was very sweet (I know some people like that so personal preference.) We ate the wings, each had one bite of the shepherds pie, and then went and got Korean fast food. read more

The food was amazing! My sis and I shared the calamari and mozzarella sticks and both we're great! I had the Caesar salad with chicken and my sister had the Mushroom Swiss burger with fries and everything was great! The second time we visited I got the messy burger (with my own substitutions) and she got the same burger because she enjoyed it so much! The service and ambiance was amazing; everyone was nice and accommodating. I'm a tourist of NYC but I'm coming back in April and they will see me! read more

We just moved here and were looking to watch the Cowboys play. This spot did not disappoint. And we appreciated being surrounded by our Cowboy family. This will def be our go to spot for game day. I really like this place, its huge for one. Was taken here close to 10 years ago by a friend who worked in theater. The two guy bartenders became my instant bros. After that one time I kept coming back for quick booze and NFL games. After that i came back because shopping in midtown is stressful and who doesn't need a drink break. After that I started coming for the food(sliders slapped). AFTER that COVID hit. Went back a couple of weeks ago with my dad, to the convenience of curbside drinking. The bartenders and server were all chill, cheap Modelos and Margaritas. Can't wait till they open everything back up once again, good luck guys, glad you're still around. read more

Stumbled upon this establishment in the most random of winters. TBH, we couldn't get into Rolf's, even post-Christmas. Shocking Playwright did the trick since after standing in line, in the cold, for nearly half an hour. Beer and fried food, combined with the quickest table ever. Totally made up for it. May need to head here for happy hour on the way to Penn Staton. read more

A group of us (8) came here on February 13th. We had a blast in the backroom. The cobb salad was HUGE! It was the best one I had tried in a while. The tv screens were playing various sport channels. The only disappointing factor was the music was really loud. read more

Taking off a star because I had a weird experience with the people at the front. I'm currently recovering from an injury and I'm in a pretty obvious neck brace. I was visiting with two people who were on their way and would be arriving in about 10-15 minutes and the people at the front told me I couldn't be seated until they arrived. I understand that this is normal protocol, but I pointed out my neck brace and asked if an exception could be made because it's significantly more comfortable for me to sit down (and there was no room at the bar). They said that their manager wouldn't let them do that, and that they couldn't seat me until the rest of my party was there. My cocktail had passion fruit, so of course I asked my usual question: "But is it real passion fruit?" He just nodded in agreement and that told me everything I needed to know. That drink was legit and had nice strength. The food was great too. My fish tacos were packed with fresh fish, the guacamole and salsa were chunky and full of flavor and hubs enjoyed his pastrami sandwich. I have no clue when we'll be back in Midtown, but one thing's for sure- we're sitting with Josiah again.

I came here with a few girlfriends on Friday evening after work. I heard about their happy hour so we decided to check it out. It was pretty crowded downstairs - to our disappointment no seats but the host took us to their second level which I didn't know they had. It's a little quieter here but still a nice atmosphere. They have a nice dining area at the back which I learned they rent out for parties. Would be a great spot for our work party. The staff here were so cool.. really - no attitude, informative, fast and boy do they make good drinks(probably why I can't remember any of their names) Happy hour is pretty awesome - wide selection so something for everyone. Basically can get a beer for $4 and wine, mixed drinks for $5. They also have sangria, mojitos and frozen drinks for $5 until 8pm. Music was pretty good.. think that's what kept us there so long.. good mix of oldies, rock and some alternative stuff. Typical after work crowd, mix of suits and some tourists. We decided it was in our best interests to have something to eat so we ordered a bunch of appetizers and fish n' chips(for me) Delish!! Fish was perfectly crispy, light golden batter and not greasy. The girls had mini burgers, pizza and wings - all really good - we fought over the last mini burger! The good thing about eating was that it sobered us up - bad thing it kept us there until 9pm.... 9pm is car bomb power hour!! OMG - $5 CAR BOMBS!! What can I say - we stayed there WAY longer than we intended to but we had the BEST time. We had so much fun with the staff - it's their fault I am still recovering on a Monday as I write this but it's also the reason they will see us all there again this Friday!! I stopped by here on Friday evening with my mom and 2 sisters. After shopping extensively at Macys we were in dire need of food and I needed a beer!! We walked in to a boisterous crowd of yankee fans. (first playoff game) TV'S were everywhere!!! Seem like a good place to watch a game but this was not the scene we were looking for. However the very pleasant supervisor with a charming irish accent persuaded us to sit upstairs where she assured us it was quieter. So she escorted us to the second floor, where they had just as many tvs!! AHH! At this point we all needed to eat so we stayed - and we were all glad we did!! It WAS quieter and had more of a dining atmosphere. The waitress was equally pleasant and had an equally charming accent. The food was delicious. Corned Beef and Cabbage is a must try!!. I celebrated my 65th Birthday this past Sunday, March 19 at the Playwright Irish Pub.. OMG! I couldn't be happier! The Manager Kimberly Kolbert Grana was so gracious, kind and supportive. Of course I was a bit nervous about my party but she immediately did everything in her power to calm me down and mission accomplished! All of my guests LOVED this restaurant! The food is beyond yummy! The atmosphere is oh so cozy. I really appreciated the hard work of the bartender, Terry. She handled everything in stride. I love this Pub and will definitely go back again and again. I can't recommend it high enough. You will love this Pub! I know that I did! i work in the mid town area , and recently stumbled across this place , WOW WHAT A FIND, had lunch with friends was a real treat , they have a lunch special at $8.95 , soup( with what the watress informed us irish brown bread the chef actualy makes which was delicious) then a choice of really good sandwichs there was 4 of us so we tried one each, really tasty, the service was good , frendly girls, and efficent, the bar seemed to have a steady flow of people comming and going, the upstairs has an otb at the back which iv never seen in a bar before so that was pretty cool, also the amount flat screens was unreal i could just imagine the athmosphere during a fight or a foot ball game, all and all a cool place to hang out , have lunch or meet for drinks, thanks guys! read more

We came across the Playwright on an afternoon stroll and stopped in because the lunch specials sounded good. They have real Shepherd's Pie here, with lamb, not beef (shepherds, after all, herd sheep, not cows)! The Irish chef, Sam, personally made sure I was taken care of, as I have a severe pepper allergy. Our server, Carl, was very helpful and made sure everything came out exactly right. The hand cut fries - both the skinny ones and the planks - were fresh and delicious. The burgers are juicy (and they had all the toppings we wanted), the baked three cheese sandwich is gooey, cheesy deliciousness, and the Guinness is on tap. This place is everything you could want and more from an Irish Pub in Midtown. Ideal location, great food - the Shepard's pie is a must. When I came in here, the place was extremely busy but thankfully I was directed to a spot at the bar. The price is what you expect to pay in this area, but they have a great happy hour from 4pm until 8pm on weekdays. Unfortunately there is no live music here but the bartenders play a great selection of music. What makes this place 5/5 is the service - Jason the night time bartender will take good care of you. After calling around all day to find a spot to watch ufc 131, we found ourselves at this bar to find a sea of tv's - wall to wall - awesome!! We were greeted by a friendly hostess who took us to a table - on the condition we were eating and drinking... Walked upstairs to find more wall to wall tv's, buzzing atmosphere.. and hot staff!! Stumbled upon this place accidentally with a few friends, and so glad we did. The staff here is so friendly and attentive, and attractive. They have 2 floors with 2 full bars...a true sports bar with TVs everywhere. Me and my girlfriends are not into sports too much, but the crowd was great, the drink specials where awesome, and the food was unexpectedly delicious for pub fare. I had their famous playwright burger which was probably one of the best burgers I've ever had, and my friend ordered their salmon special with mashed potatoes, and enjoyed her meal as well. Went to an event that was held at this location and all seemed to be going great until my friend showed up and the racist woman working the entrance to the 2nd floor whispered into his ear that " you don't belong here " why because he was a black man at an Irish event, every employee that was in the area saw what transpired and all they did is try and make it go away. Nachos were gross and served with canned chili which was cold and probably just taken from the can. Also, they run out of Guiness - the most popular dark beer - very unprofessional for an Irish pub. I really enjoyed this Pub, food was great and the owner John is the man, he looks after his clients and his business. Have nothing but good things to say about this pub, if you are in midtown and want to stop for good food or a cold beer to watch a game the Playwright wont disappoint. Also go to the 2nd floor they have a very nice living room space at the back. read more

Great bar...I love this bar each visit to NY has at least one stop if not more...great drinks great atmosphere. Every sport you can imagine is shown here...let the bartenders play songs on their ipods for you, playing what makes them happy because the will make you happy. I boringly always have the Playwright burger. Well if it ain't broke don't fix it. . read more

I love the city and there are lots of irish bar/pub in NY but this one is the where I usually go for each visit to NY. It has lots of TVs and good food as well, wings were really awesome. The bartenders are really great too specifically a young lady Amy looked after me and couldn't have asked for anything more from here. Will be back again for sure read more

This definitely a drinking place. If you decide to eat, be sure to order bar-fare. We made the mistake of ordering "real" food, chicken cordon blue and salmon and it was less than mediocre. I would have given this place a 3-star rating if it weren't for the food! Everything else was ok. Service fine, atmosphere as expected. read more

Epitome of rude New Yorker greeted us at the door. We were too slow for his liking, so he proceeded to walk away and ignore us. This, with an almost empty establishment right at noon. Red flags for an awful lunch experience. We moved on and would highly recommend that you pass in this one as well! read more

With the robust and exciting Cowboy fans, the endless supply of beer, and the delectable wings, I feel right at home visiting from Texas. The food was magnificent and the hostess Tave was simply a delight. Next time we are in town, we will plan on coming here for another game night. read more
