My husband and I have always made it a point to stop at Plaza Pizza whenever we're in Newark. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was a huge disappointment. The restaurant just doesn't seem to have recovered since COVID. They no longer offer dine-in service, and all of the tables have been pushed in front of the prep area, so customers can no longer watch the pizzas being made--a feature that used to add to the experience. The condition of the restaurant was concerning. The ceiling tiles were stained and discolored, several were out of place leaving openings to the floor above, and there appeared to be visible mold on ceiling tiles and around the vent above the pizza ovens and prep area. Given the location, it raised concerns for me about sanitation and food safety. The drink cooler was completely empty. When we asked, we were simply told they were out of beverages. We ended up buying drinks from the business next door, where they mentioned that Plaza Pizza customers regularly come there because the pizza shop doesn't have beverages available. The pizza itself wasn't what we remembered. The signature cracker crust that made Plaza Pizza special is gone. It lacked the crisp, fresh texture it once had and instead tasted stale. The bottoms of both pizzas were also dotted with black debris from the oven deck -- the oven decks have been cleaned between pizzas which should be a standard operating procedure. The restaurant was extremely hot inside, and I noticed ingredients such as sauce being kept in containers on the counter rather than in a refrigerated prep table. Having spent many years working in food service, those observations prompted me to review recent Licking County health inspection reports. I found multiple repeat violations that had reportedly remained uncorrected, which made the issues I observed even more concerning. This restaurant used to be one of our favorite stops, and it's disappointing to see how far it has declined. I genuinely hope the owners invest in cleaning, maintenance, and stronger food safety practices because Plaza Pizza was once a local gem. Until then, we'll be taking our business elsewhere. read more

Terrible experience I ordered on the app, place the order for pick up at 5:15 pm and had to wait until 5:35 to receive my order from some very rude employees. Pizza was absolutely terrible, and I think it's mostly attributed to the sauce. It's the worst pizza sauce I've ever had. They forgot to put the sauce in with the cheesy garlic bread. I wish the current owners cared even half as much as Mike and Donna did. I've waited 1 1/2 hours for a burnt pizza, and even when it isn't burnt it's just not anywhere as good as it used to be. The website doesn't let you order half the time (no, I'm not using your stupid app) and the ordering is confusing. I thought I'd try one more time- had mozz sticks that were inedible. This used to be my favorite pizza. I would order a cheese with exrta cheese. I had not ordered in almost 2 years as I eat keto, but I decided to splurge as it sounded so good. What a HUGE disappointment. I could have baked a frozen pizza and saved money and my taste buds. The crust is a tad thicker than it used to be and it tastes different. The cheese is now all either mozzarella or provolone, or a mixture- not sure. The old pizza recipe used to have a good amount of parmesan cheese cooked on it. It had been greasy, cheesy, delicious. Now it is non-descript and very bland and not worth buying. I had my taste buds excited and waiting, though I noticed it also did not smell the same when I picked it up. WHY would the "new" owners (not original owners) mess with the old recipe that had been made for close to 50 years? I won't be back as I can toss in a frozen pizza and save some big bucks if I want bland and non-descript. This was so not worth breaking my diet for. Pizza was burnt and when I called to let them know they said they would remake it but it would be a 40 minute wait. The same amount of time it took to make the original pizza. The girl taking phone order was distracted, talking to someone else. When we went in to pick it up, 3 young people working, no acknowledgement. When we got home, the pizza order was wrong. BUT the biggest disappointment was it didn't taste like a plaza pizza AT ALL! In fact we ended up throwing half of it out. Way to much sauce and the sauce had a different taste. Once again, pizza was of poor quality in both toppings and flavor. Again, ordered a pizza all the way with extra cheese and no black olives but got black olives and minimal other toppings and very apparent to me, not extra cheese. I will stop buying Plaza pizza. First time trying this pizza. Great new owners. Parking lot on the side. Walk in the front door and smell pizza wafting through. Dessert pizza was the smell that hit me first. We ordered ahead for pick up and was told it would be 45 minutes (on a Thursday night). Our order was ready right on time. A few tables inside for dining or to sit at while you wait for your pizza orders to go. Drink refrigerators along one wall. Menu easily viewable from the entrance. Watch the pizzas being assembled as you wait. Friendly staff greet you and take your order. However, phone in orders are not always accurate. Poor connection? We had three big pizzas for five people. BBQ Chicken is their newest and is very delicious! BBQ sauce, cheese, red onions, chicken, pineapple, bacon, and topped with cilantro. Love how all the ingredients compliment each other. Would order this one again. Everything pizza: sauce, cheese, onion, green pepper, mushroom, pepperoni, & hamburger (except ours came with ham; communication error). Whenever I travel, I try to seek out unique pizza shops. I chose this place based on Yelp reviews. It did not disappoint! If you like thin crust pizza, definitely check this place out. If it's a Friday or Saturday night, make sure you order at least an hour in advance, maybe 90 minutes just to be safe. I ordered an 11 inch with bacon and pepperoni..... and I ate the entire thing on my own! I'll probably pay for that tomorrow. Ha ha. Yes, it's a small parking lot, but 95% of the people are picking up to go orders, so parking isn't a problem. The people were very nice, both employees and customers included. If you're in the area, and you love thin crust pizza, I highly recommend this place. read more

I've been eating Plaza Pizza for as long as I can remember. (40+ years!). When I loved in Newark is was a weekly staple and when I moved to Columbus in 2003 I'd make as many trips as I could just for the pizza. I was worried when ownership changed hands and had heard a few rumors that things had changed drastically. I'd not eaten there since the change but had a major craving this past week. I was happy that I could now order on line ahead of time and even schedule a pickup days in advance(and pay ahead of time).. I had a question and the owners answered me asap and even checked back to see how I enjoyed my pizza. Pickup during this time of social distancing and Covid 19 was a breeze and they'll even bring it to your car if you call them. Pizza review... Pretty damn close to the original taste! That amazing cracker crust... Just enough grease....yum. I did notice a little more spiciness to the sauce but that didn't bother me one bit. I'll be back very soon!!!! I actually generally like Plaza Pizza. Tonight though, I ordered a pizza through Plaza's website. The delivery was going to take an hour - which is fine - it usually takes a while. A half an hour after it was supposed to be here I called. They did not know where it was because it had been picked up by DoorDash. Note that I ordered through the Plaza website, not DoorDash. I requested a refund since it had not arrived and they didn't know when/if it would arrive. They refused to fully refund because DoorDash charged $8. When I noted their website had no indication that DoorDash was involved the manager told me that it was "common knowledge" that DoorDash did their deliveries. I get that Plaza contracts with DoorDash, but if you aren't advertising that, you are responsible for those you choose to contract with. All I wanted was all my money back because I ordered food and didn't receive. BTW - about 45 minutes after it was supposed to arrive it finally did.... read more

Love this spot!!! My dad used to take me all the time as a kid and after 7 years of being in LA I had to hit up a local classic!

I normally don't like thin crust pizza but the pizza here is awesome! Not to mention the staff are amazing and work so hard.

I wish I could say the recipe has not changed since the new owners have taken over but that is not true. First, let me say I've been going to Plaza Pizza for over 17 years and have always enjoyed their pizza. However, since the new owners have taken over the pizza has changed. Specifically, the meats are significantly different now. I ordered a pepperoni, hamburger pizza and their hamburger is completely different now. In fact it was so different I thought it was sausage and called in because I thought they mistakingly gave me sausage. After speaking with employees at Plaza they indicated that in fact the hamburger had "CHANGED" as well as some of their other meats. They also indicated they would not be going back to the old hamburger recipe. I don't understand why someone would spend money to buy a business that has had a successful recipe for 47 years to then decide you are smarter than everyone else and change the recipe. This post is not roast Plaza Pizza but people should be aware that the recipe has in fact changed and be informed if they decide to order the pizza thinking it is the same. read more

It's just this plain and simple ...... I don't like it. I have had several varieties from other shops with the cracker crust oh, and I like most of those. I do not like plaza Pizza crust. I found their sauce pretty bland. My wife who likes no spice at all, also found it bland. I do like the pie-shaped slices for a change. By comparison, my favorite Newark Pizza is Pizza Cottage. My second favorite and the region is grapevine Pizza on refugee road East of State route 256 in pickerington. I like the $2.58 Great Value thin crust Pizza from Walmart more than Plaza. Favorite pizza of all time is Mother's and Godfathers from back in the 80s. Sorry, as this review is far from the average review. Best hometown pizza!!! No other like it. Have enjoyed this place all my life. My favorite pizza. They're somewhat pricey compared to pizza chains but that's because it's awesome! The thin crust is mostly crispy and somewhat flakey and never burnt-so delicious. I am a fan of lots of cheese and all the toppings but I don't normally like many toppings on this since I prefer the crispier crust. Not that it's bad with all the toppings but no matter where you get or make pizza , numerous toppings anyways tend to make it hard for your crust to crisp. By all means, go all out in toppings if you like. It is still very good. As for serving sizes (per person), well, a family or large party may require more than the average. Why?
