Pleasant house pub is truly a special and unique place. We visited to celebrate my hubski's bday in September and were not disappointed at all. The restaurant is very quaint and the food is all we hoped it would be. The pies are TOP NOTCH. The crust is baked to perfection and the fillings are spiced just right. My hubski got the stout ale pie and I had the vegan pie. We enjoyed every single bite . So Much so that we each took one home for the next day. The service was equally as great! I went to pleasant house pub for dinner with my wife and some friends and it was an excellent experience. The pub has a very rustic and welcoming vibe. The service was great and we were seated quickly. The staff checked in with us frequently despite being busy. I ended up getting the chicken Baltic meat pie and had it "crowned". It was delicious. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. It was seasoned to perfection. Having the mashed potatoes and gravy on top is a must! I'm so glad I came here. This was such a great experience in general. The open air dining was so refreshing and water was already awaiting me as I was sat. I was there for the fish n chips and they absolutely did not disappoint. Sustainable caught fish perfectly fried in a crispy batter. It tasted so fresh and clean. The chips were so perfectly crispy and adding the curry sauce was the best. I also really appreciate that they carried NA options for non drinkers. I can't drink anymore but as an original member of the 1759 society, I love me some Guinness. Well! Color me happy when I saw these beautiful meat pies on Yelp. It was my last night Chicago and I desired a more Irish/British cuisine to wrap my experience of a Chicago up. The pub was welcoming, warm and lovely in aesthetic. I could not decide which meat pie to try, as there were three! A meat and carrot, a curry chicken, and the special - German goulash. Well, I ordered all three. It was raining that day and I anticipated a comforting meat pie, in a warm cozy pub, on a cold rainy day. Mind you, I have never had a meat pie and didn't know what to expect or able to compare to other meat pies. Here goes - Meat and Carrot - So pretty! Especially with the mashed potatoes and gravy. Was it a red wine reduction gravy? - tasted like it. That was my favorite. Over all, the flavors and textures were very were nice. The bread part - is that supposed to be a puff pastry or pie crust consistency? I guess I imagined it would be more flaky - like chicken pot pie crust. The dough, for me, was a little let down because I was hoping for a flakier and pastry consistency. This was more tough and chewy - but again, what do I know what it is supposed to be like. Chicken Pie - Definitely tasted like curry. I like curry but I was not expecting it to be curry. I was expecting more of a pie with chicken and peas and carrots. The consistency reminded me of when Coraline is playing with her food. Ummm...it was a good flavor of curry but I guess I wasn't in the mood for curry. The bread and the curry didn't mesh well for me - although I love naan and curry! Idk! German Goulash - uhhhhhh not my first pick either. The peppers flavors definitely popped, which I loved. However, I don't know what to say, I just didn't love it. I guess I'm a steak and carrots girl? Sticky Toffee Pudding - it was difficult to cut through the edges of the sponge cake using the side of my fork which lead me to believe the sponge cake was microwaved. :( it also had a chewy consistency of microwaved breads. The middle was soft and delicate. The butter and toffee was rich and lovely. But the feeling it was microwaved dampened my enjoyment. Over all, I had a fun time here in my own company and I had fun trying all the dishes. However, I can't say I would return for the meat pie. I will continue searching and comparing. read more

As someone who has moved to the USA from Wales, UK.. I was pleasantly surprised on my visit to Chicago stumbling across this place on Yelp. The chicken tikka pie was exceptional and exactly what I had been missing from home. My fiancé had the bangers and mash and the sausages were fantastic, I really wish I asked where they source them from as I struggle a lot with getting used to the American sausages here. Still trying to figure out how they got everything right! Upon entering, we received a nice greeting and were told to seat ourselves. Someone came and took our order immediately. We ordered ginger-ales; had no idea we were getting the real thing. Fresh ginger flavor with lots of bubbles. We ordered the steak and ale pie with a side of mashed potatoes. It came with gravy on top and a side of pea shoots. At first bite, I closed my eyes an imagined being in Ireland. A very thick but flaky crust filled with tender meat, fresh vegetables and the right amount of gravy with a hint of heat. The mashed potatoes are a perfect accompaniment. Then there was dessert; sticky toffee pudding with authentic toasted caramel flavors. The oatmeal cookie; two thin oatmeal slices sandwiched between just the right amount of dark chocolate. Talk about pictures living up to the hype. Pleasant House has been on my list for quite a while now and is heavily recommended by Yelp. I looked at the steak ale pie and knew I had to try it. The Atmosphere was clean yet fresh, almost like eating in a hipster garden. The wait staff was ok. Nothing too offensive. I do think they could have been more attentive. My cousin got the mimosa, and I got the coffee with Kula topped with whipped cream. It was delicious. Of course, we both got the steak ale pie. I will note they do ask if you want the mashed potatoes on top or on the side. We both said on the side; however, when the order arrived, it was on top. When asked about the miscommunication, the waitress looked at us and said you want me to take it back? To not cause a fuss, we keep the food. Now that that's out of the way, the pie was pretty phenomenal and with looks to boot. It was hardly yet light. I didn't feel like I needed anything else. This was a perfect lunch item. I would recommend it, and I look forward to coming again to try the chicken. Despite the miscommunication, I will give my first experience 4 1/2 out of 5. read more

I miss traveling. Just when the pandemic is finally coming to an end, now we're looking at a potential WW3. I'd rather be sitting in a pub in England or Ireland. The humbleness of a pot pie was so appreciated after a string of upscale dining lately. Especially on such a cold morning. It was exactly the breakfast that I needed. I ordered the curry chips too. Admittedly, I was not a fan of those. The chips were perfect though. Just didn't love the curry sauce. The service was so friendly and welcoming. I've been coming here with my friend on a regular basis for the fish and chips, specifically. I don't know what happened to their food, but both the fish and the potatoes are not the same quality as before. I know the fish used to be Great Lakes White Fish, because I inquired about it at some point. I asked because the flavor of the fish reminded me of trout, which is quite delicious. Whatever fish they're using now is different, in fact it's tasteless. The potatoes are also tasteless, but used to be flavorful and crispy. I noticed the difference in food back in August and thought maybe it was a one-off. But after last night's visit, I guess this is the new standard. So disappointing. My friend called the food "basic." To management, you should try eating your fish & chips. It doesn't compare to whatever made you famous for it. read more

I was with a party of six and we were sat right away. We were almost immediately given carafes of water with glasses and our server, AM C. came over and started drink orders. Btw, she looked so pretty in her colorful outfit ! Heads up that they do NOT split the bill. You have to figure that out at the end of your meal. We started with drinks and I ordered the London Classic Gin and Tonic because why not? I really appreciated the cloves that were present. It gave definitely took it up a notch for me For the appetizers we ordered several things to pass around . I had the Scotch egg which is a medium boiled egg wrapped in sausage, coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Yes, I said fried lol. It comes with a side of grainy mustard that was absolutely astonishing! I also ordered the Deluxe Gravy Chips. Those are "chips" with braised beef, aged cheddar and gravy. Also, the prices here for the quality of food that you're served are unmatched in today's economy. We also ordered Rarebit Mac and Cheese and Welsh Rarebit which is beer cheese poured onto sourdough and broiled.. super yum! My drink, which was HUGE by the way was so yum! Gin and Tonic is either a hit or miss and this was a HIT! Omgaaaaah! Spectacular, gimme 10 of them right now! lol! We all ended up ordering the same thing. The Steak and Ale pie. You can order it topped (we did) and that just means it comes with a scoop of mashed potatoes and gravy ! I feel like this is a key part to the dish lol! Everything looked and tasted fantastic . I have no notes, other than you should hurry up and give them a visit ! Oh, I also ordered an Espresso martini.. 10/10 good! The espresso wasn't overpowering nor was the alcohol too strong. What an unsuspecting location this pub can be found at. It's amazing though how the interior can transform where you feel like you are at. My team and I came here for lunch, and the food was excellent. It was a tough choice to go for the meat pies versus the the chicken tikka special. I went for the special and it didn't disappoint. Here are the things I tried: Scotch Egg: 9.5/10 This was such a great appetizer, I wish I got more. It was well flavored and paired amazingly with the mustard. The exterior had a great crunchy texture that contrasted the goey center. Steak and Ale Pie with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy: My boyfriend ordered this pie and was so happy. You could tell the crust was homemade and the steak inside was incredibly tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes makes it complete. It might look small but it is very filling! Pub Burger Tuesday Special: 9.5/10 With pies being their specialty, I didn't expect the Pub burger to be all that but it was actually really good!! Since they had their Tuesday special, I got the burger, fries and a beer all for $15. What a deal. The fries were so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, very well salted and just the perfect texture. This burger screamed high quality. I love the addition of sliced pickles on the burger and a pickle spear on the side! I would order this again and say it competes with places like small cheval. Very delicious. Pleasant House Pub truly lived up to their name. This was the first time I have ever had British-Indian food and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The restaurant has a beautiful interior that was tastefully selected to fit with the British theme. The waitress was friendly and helpful when my sister had questions about some of the menu items. We ordered the curry chips and Welsh rarebit as apps and both were amazing!!! The Welsh rarebit has a tasty beer cheese that pairs well with the worcestershire sauce on the toast. The potato wedges in the curry chips were nicely fried paired with a fragrant curry and mint. The curry chips were my favorite of the day!!! My sister and her husband ordered a mushroom and kale pie topped with mashed potatoes which they really liked. They also ordered a pumpkin pie (special of the day) which they enjoyed as well. We came here on a weekday afternoon and it was pretty quiet. The indoor seating is spacious and perfect for groups, and the decor is nice. Service was fast and everyone was friendly. I got the special pie, which had cheese and vegetables. I liked it overall but could see and taste that the crust was a little undercooked. My husband enjoyed the steak and ale pie and the sticky toffee pudding (I thought it was a little on the sweet side) but really disliked the Scotch egg. He felt it was under-seasoned and didn't get past the first bite. We just returned from a trip to London and were missing the delicious pub food we had experienced while there. So we made a quick trip to Pleasant House Pub. Parking was easy, right out in front. I had the Mushroom and Kale Royal Pie, topped with the mash and gravy. My husband had the special, which was a steak and Guiness pie, also topped with mash and gravy. The steak and ale pie had a nice crispy crust and honestly looked pretty cute topped with a scoop of mashed potatoes. The filling was, idk, stew like. If I went again, I'd want to try a more interesting filling. There's a nice array of beers too. A pleasant establishment located between Pilsen and also University Village. We ended up coming around during a cold snap - because who doesn't want sausages and meat pies when it's freezing outside? Seating was split between what appeared to be an outdoors area (probably for summertime - it was covered and heated), and an indoor area. The service moved along at a plodding pace - slightly slow but doggedly and constantly moving forward - which actually gave ample time for us to enjoy the vibe of the pub. We ordered the Steak and Ale pie, the Turkey pie, the Bangers and Mash, the Currywurst, and the Scotch Egg. I would have liked to see a little more filling-to-crust ratio on both of the pies, but they both tasted excellent. The Bangers and Mash had excellent bangers (sausages) which were savory and surprisingly soft, but ultimately ended up being a little boring with the mash potatoes. The currywurst made for great bar food, and the Scotch egg was perfectly cooked. This was all washed down with a hearty ale - the overall selection on tap is excellent. Seeing how inflation has upped the price in most restaurants, I was happy to see that the pub still remained relatively cheap, costing about $20-25 a person for a full meal. Definitely a place I'll be returning to the next time I'm feeling the urge to cozy up to a glass of ale. read more

Felt like having a cozy dinner last Sunday and ordered pleasant house. Two pies - the beef and chicken - plus a side of peas and the curry potatoes. The pies were amaze balls, I couldn't decide which I liked better. The beef was so savory with so much depth to the sauce. The chicken one had the most tender, moist pieces of chicken I've ever had in a baked dish. The one disappointment was the peas, which should have been prepared with butter and mint. They were boiled or steamed peas with nothing added. Not horrible but not what I expected. The curry potatoes were almost perfection. The potatoes themselves were perfect. But the curry sauce had a bitterness that didn't need to be there. It overpowered the taste of the potato without adding enough value. I'll order them again and hope it was just an off day in the curry sauce prep. read more
