We've been there several times. We love the food at Plum House. I love sushi but my girlfriend does not like seafood. They have a roll there with chicken, sweet potato and cream cheese. She loves it! So we are able to get "sushi" more often! The reason I knocked a few stars off of their rating is because of their service. We have been there 5-6 times if not more and we have had AWFUL service every time. I'm not sure what happens after we order our food but it seems like the waitresses disappear! The last time we were there we were so excited because everything was great and our waitress was on point throughout the entire meal... then as we were waiting for our check she disappeared. We waited a good 40 minutes after we finished our meals and she was MIA. So we went up to the counter and asked for our bill and I was signing our credit card receipt our waitress came running through the curtain and apologized for going on her dinner break, she had forgot about us. :-( Food is on point! Definitely my favorite sushi place in the Rochester area, and one I regularly return to despite there being a couple of reasonable competitors half the distance away. The food is excellent and good value, especially the combination meals. Though the salad dressing isn't quite as flavorful as it used to be, it's still good. The miso soup is also good, the sushi rolls are good, the tempura is fantastic, and the sashimi is melt-in-the-mouth amazing. The side dishes are all great, too. The service varies depending on the individual wait staff, from cool to friendly, but it is always professional and courteous. Parking can be an issue, so be prepared for a short walk. I love this place. We have been to many sushi places in Rochester. This is one of the better for a quick, good and filling dinner. Love the staff. Super friendly and helpful. I love almost ALL of their rolls, especially their spicy salmon hand rolls. (Not on the menu, but ask. Totally worth it!) I've only had sushi here, so I'm only going off of that. The boats of sashimi and sushi are completely worth it. They come with soup and salad! (which are decent) It looks like a hole in the wall, but go in and find out it's NOT! Super worth it! read more

What a great find! I have driven past it a bunch of times and never stopped to eat there. Finally, a friend suggested it and I decided to go. Sushi was good (although the spicy tuna was not nearly spicy enough) and the fried udon noodles were delicious! The staff was very nice and attentive; even though it took my friends nearly 30 minutes to show up after we sat down (since they went to Plum GARDEN in Pittsford), the staff never seemed irritated or upset with us and kept checking in to make sure our friends were OK. I have been to Plum House 5-8 times while living in Rochester, NY. The food is quite good and the service is pretty fast. The tables need to be bigger because it is quite hard to fit all of the good food on the table. You have to make sure you tell the server the exact menu item you would like to order. I have verbally told my server what I wanted to order and she misunderstood me and brought out the wrong item. I normally point to the item I want, which is easier. So OK, my first first review was 6 years ago...things change. Our family had a real love and connection with this restaurant. Going out to eat, much less Sushi! is an extravagance for us, a special event. Plum house was the place!! We loved the owner and servers...Tonight - with us all together again for the holiday, wanted to go somewhere special - yes, plum house! Only it wasn't. They used to always greet you with hot warm towels to wipe your hands with. Did not happen, and when my husband asked, the server brought some that "she poured hot water over"...yet were dripping and felt both cold and hot. So Plum house, is this something you still do, or no? The food was OK, but the "boat" - sushi for three - that used to be photo worthy, with beautiful garnish, was a big boat plate with sushi on it that looked plain, and not as portioned as before. The reason why I am updating the former review is that my husband and I came here just the two of us not long ago, and it was this same experience. We miss you Plum House! And for take out, we'll still consider, because the food is good...but from now on, time to seek out another special place for our family. read more

This is not a fancy place but the food is remarkable. The sushi and Sashimi are oustanding. The sushi chefs are quite skilled and create amazing rolls. During one visit I even met a California Rollin sushi chef at the sushi bar. While I've eaten in the dining area a couple of times, I most often park myself at the sushi bar. i ordered delivery at around 7pm one night. and at around 730 they called to confirm. and at 8pm they told me it would take at most 40 mins. i called again at 850. they said they need another 15 mins with really bad attitude. and at 9 i called again. they said they need another 15 mins. now it's 915. my food is still not here. i waited 2 hours for my dinner and they do not think there is any problems with that. do not order from them. their service is really bad. read more

I've been back to Plumhouse and it's much better. In fact I've introduced some friends to it and they were impressed and said they want to go back. Two have been back since then. I found the fish tasty, the miso soup and salad very good and the service was quite pleasant. I've been back a few times and have not been disappointed. Chew and Swallow is the best way to describe the sushi/food at Plum House. Let's just say I've DEFINITELY had better. Reading all the 4 and 5 stars makes me wonder DID I eat at the same restaurant??? Not really sure where to begin. The restaurant lighting ambience is probably too dark for my liking, it 'doesn't exactly flow too well with the water backdrop. It just didn't do anything for me. The staff were okay, but part of me felt like they didn't really care too much. I wasn't expecting to engage in conversation, but it felt like an awkward date. haha. I was looking forward to some good sushi/food but instead, almost everything we ordered was tasteless. The California roll that came with my salmon teriyaki combo tasted extremely bland. My salmon looked especially sad. it was no texture, almost like they put it in the microwave and then covered with sauce. And I just realized, was it supposed to come with rice? Cause mine didn't. Odd... every time I order this dish elsewhere, it always comes with rice. Other people in my party ordered sushi and again, it was tasteless. Chew and Swallow. Chew and Shallow. On a more positive note, their kani salad is decent enough because there was actual taste. The prices are not exactly cheap, so I was expecting better service and food. Also, why are the sushi chefs located away from the customers? Are they hiding something? Usually, in the Japanese restaurants that I've gone to, they are located near the tables. Would I go back? The only reason I eat at Plum house is convenience. The food is ok, not the best I have had, but ok. First off the Edamame is over salted. The Shumai is ok, but you can get way better Shumai at Golden Port Dim Sum Restaurant on East Ave. The Udon is not that good, over flavored. The best Udon I have found is at Blue Ocean on Dewey. The sushi is ok on taste, but gives me bad bad heart burn after. The combinations of sauces they use on the Banzai roll just don't go well together and the roll is very moist and falls apart. Not worth $15.00. The tempura is good, but watch out sometimes I have gotten an under cooked shrimp tempura. It is so gross when you bite into something that is crunchy on the outside but battery on the inside. The dinner combinations look like a good deal, but the meat of choice is usually very small, and the bento box is so big it takes up so much space on the table. They should put more of the main dish rather then put a bunch of smaller items that are not cooked as well. The chicken is over cooked, smothered in teriyaki sauce. The rice is over cooked, Japanese rice is not so sticky that it loses its shape when you touch it. I don't understand why it is so hard to cook rice properly in a restaurant. The California roll is good, not too hard to make that. The one thing I wish this place would work on is the knowledge of what they serve. The wait staff does not know much about what is in a roll and even what the drinks should look like. Once I ordered Orange soda and the lady brought me lemon juice. The wait staff kept telling me it was orange soda and I had to ask them to ask the manager what was wrong with it. I would not take any friends or family here or anyone I wanted to impress. read more

Absolutely love this place. Every time my dad or my in-laws come to town, we have to go. We love that it's on Grubhub if we want to order to go, but we also enjoy going and eating there. The guys at the sushi counter are really fun and friendly and the servers are nice. This place has undergone some changes in management over the last few years. The quality of their food has absolutely suffered, probably as a result. Their sushi is nothing like what it should be and, indeed, most of the sushi options around town pale in comparison to Shiki now. I re-visited Plum House recently and they gave me obviously frozen, fishy salmon sashimi. They were very apologetic and quick to rectify their error, but there are some tastes you can't get out of your mouth. The Japanese fried rice is still probably the best I've had and the tempura ice cream might still be great, but this place really just isn't as good as it once was. I have been in love with Plum House for years! Do not confuse this Plum House with Plum Garden (also on Monroe Ave). I have had sushi in many restaurants and this one is by far the best. Fresh ingredients, beautiful and fun presentation, and a recent remodel. Waitress Sophia is the best! She is always smiling and friendly (no I'm not a relative!) Lol! So many rolls, such little time! I will keep going back as often as possible! Beats California Rollin' hands down! Yum! Vegetable tofu soup and Florida rolls are my absolute favorite! My wife and I have been going to the Plum House for the past 6 years. We have never had a bad meal here, they have plenty of choices for Sushi and for our friends we invite that aren't too into it, they have other goodies for them on their menu to keep anyone satisfied. The waitress will tape the itemized order on the glass of the sushi bar. Be sure to review this itemization for accuracy. I've been to this restaurant multiple times. The food is decent - sometimes the sashimi tastes a little frozen. But, it hasn't stopped me from coming back for a quick fix (quick -because the service is fast... as if the sushi is pre prepared?) ... until our recent visit. My boyfriend and I had a Groupon so we decided to use it. We ordered a lot of food, and the service was good... until the end. My boyfriend had a full carafe of sake left, and I a full glass of wine, we had a lot to talk about we were in no rush to leave, and the restaurant wasn't full so we didn't see the need to hurry out. The check was brought to us immediately after we finished dinner - so I guess we didn't need anything else to order that night.... that's OK though, some places do that. Whatever, I'm not one complain, if I wanted to order an additional drink or dessert after the check was brought I'd ask. So, my boyfriend added some tip to the bill, and I was going to leave cash on the table... until our server had a different server come over and ask us if our experience was OK that night. We told her yes it was, and she didn't leave. She wanted to make SURE that the service was OK... we assured her it was great - having no idea what she was getting at - and trying to get back to our conversation. At this point customers around us were listening in.... Finally, we realized what she -the other server, not ours, because ours must have been too bashful to come to the table- was trying to explain. The tip on the card was NOT enough by her standards (or ours, but we hadn't planned on only leaving that) ... but she found it necessary to come to the table and tell us that the tip was poor. Mind you, we hadn't finished our beverages, we hadn't gotten up from the table, we were still having conversation.... So, now what do we do? Do we tell her "oh, yes, we planned on leaving you more tip on the table?" At this point we are quite frustrated with the fact that we had been "scolded" publicly in a way, and for the fact that this was even brought to our attention in the first place -and we were then very uncomfortable - we have both worked in the restaurant business before, under tipping is not what we do. At the end of our discussion with this server we assured her the service was good. We finished our drinks, and then left. Out of principle we did not leave an additional cash tip as we had planned on originally. An 11% tip was put on the card, with what would have been an additional 10% cash. The server had no right to come to our table and complain that the tip on the card was not good enough. We will NOT be going back there. Such a shame because it was a place I used to like to go.... 2 stars because until we were made uncomfortable, the service was good. read more
