This place looked ran down on the outside and the inside didn't fair well either. It was just really musty inside. We had to make a pit stop for some food and fuel so this was on the way to Nola. We got a few Po boys and fried pickles. The bread was not that great. Really doughy. But the fried shrimp was tasty. Just didn't like anything else. Just need a little more zest or spice to it. Fried pickles were a little stale tasting but just dip it in ranch and you'll be okay. It's just like any fast food place, you'll order at the counter and wait for your food. The place was dead when we were there. Probably the only customers during the time we went. So yeah. I don't think it's super horrible but definitely not great at all. read more

My husband found this location of Po-Boy Express back when he was reading utility meters. It looks kind of like a hole in the wall, but the food is fantastic! Their po-boys are served on bread that's just slightly pressed, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The shrimp po-boy is my favorite, but they've got a good variety of po-boy options if seafood isn't your thing. And it's not just po-boys. My picky teenager was quite pleased with their chicken strips and now asks to go back to Po-Boy Express. Everything I've had there has been prepared to order and tastes great. It's not terribly convenient for us since we live on the Westside, but if we're across the river in Baton Rouge for the day, we're likely to grab lunch here. I know this place is a chain, though I think it's only a local one (Baton Rouge and maybe a couple of surrounding towns), and I'm not the biggest fan of chains but until someone proves otherwise, Po-Boy Express has the best po-boys in B.R. The bread, although slightly pressed, is stupendous. Soft, which is how your po-boy bread (French loaf) should be. Hard, tough, chewy, too crispy.....all of those are cardinal sins and in that regard, Po-Boy Express is sinless. The second, and equally as important, part of a po-boy is the "insides".......the meat and vegetables. Well, my favorite po-boy has always been the shrimp and Po-Boy Express does this justice and much more. The shrimp are tasty enough to eat by themselves. Seriously. You could take 'em all off the sandwich, act as if you bought a shrimp platter and be completely satisfied. And they PILE dem thangs on there like it ain't nobody's business. One of the marks of an outstanding po-boy is an abundance of meat and this place excels in that department. Shrimp were BUSTING out the sides of mine. My hot sausage po-boy had a nice amount of meat as well. The lettuce.....the tomato.......everything about my po-boys made me miss home as soon as I hit the interstate to head back to FL. They were so good, I had to get another right before leaving. If someone in Baton Rouge knows of a joint that serves better po-boys, let me know. After reading reviews I had to try the shrimp po boy! I don't think there was a whole lot of seasoning or unique flavors but the shrimp was very fresh and the veggies were crisp. Bring your appetite because it's hard to finish a small order.. I couldn't. The staff was very friendly and polite. I went in when they were closing and they were cleaning the entire time, smelt very fresh (like bleach and fabuloso). Prices were average and food was tasty. Can't ask for much more. read more

I love po' boys, so whenever I come to Baton Rouge, it's the first food I eat. Out here visiting family, and my cousin recommended Po' boy Express. I ordered a shrimp po' boys with fried pickles. Fried Catfish Po-Boy ($6.55/Half) - 7" catfish po-boy dressed (NOLA term for lettuce, tomato, and mayo)....fried catfish nuggets served on a soft french bread (?). The fried catfish nuggets were crispy on the outside, flaky and moist on the inside. (4 Stars) Fried Shrimp Po-Boy ($12.75/Whole) - 14" shrimp po-boy dressed. The shrimps were big in size and perfectly seasoned. They were plump w/ a nice crunchy batter. Their bread is quite different from what I'm used to in NOLA (crispy, thin-crusted French bread baked by Leidenheimer), theirs are much softer and little bit more dense. Overall, an incredible gastronomical experience....4.5 Stars! Of course, it wouldn't be right if ya didn't wash it down w/ some Barq's rootbeer...... I went for the large po-boy with the combo. Large is very large. The shrimp were fried to order well spices and crispy. If you are headed here with someone impatient it would be be advised to let them know this place is express as they go quickly, but your food is made to order so it take about 5-7 minutes. Fries are crispy. I would say the only downside is there a lot of salt on everything and I love salt, but it is A LOT. Their large soda is the size a large should probably be, not a McDonald's size large. They do have wifi which is nice while you wait and are cheap like me. read more

I loved PO BOY express for quite some years now. started with visits to B.R and going to the Florida Blvd location for shrimp poboy and meat pies... ooh meat pies!! About those meat pies well, they still have the same spice and great flavor but they've Shrunk ... well they are no longer 1 regular sized meat pie instead it's 3 extremely miniature pies, so I was a bit sadden with the order. Everything else was great, even managed to please my picky mom she enjoyed her Oyster poboy!! Minus a star because of my disappointment with the meat pie change and OMG the grease on the onion rings WHY??!!! I swear please do not order them you will not be pleased, unless you enjoy Grease no seriously Grease totally too much grease I have no idea how or why they are so Greasy. We had to throw them out the bag was saturated and eating it taste like flavored Grease no seriously Grease I am so disappointed in the Grease level on the onion rings I will definitely ask about this on my next visit... Excellent oyster poboy and fried okra. But be sure that you only want food, no ambience, no service, no frills, just food. By all outward appearances this place deserves no more than two stars. Dowdy and bordering on dirty, it's a former convenience store surrounded by HUD apartments. But, the poboys are just darned good and have been for years. The secret seems to be that every order is whipped up fresh -- I've never had an item here that tasted or looked as if it'd been under the heat lamp too long. Tonight's order was the oyster poboy with a side of fried okra. Oysters were plump, flavorful, and cooked just right. Poboy bread is a bit different from some other places, more like a Cuban sandwich, crispy and pressed a little flat. But the bread might be this poboy's redemption because I often find other restaurants' poboys to be too thick and heavy with bread. Here they seem to be lighter yet substantial. The poboys always come dressed with lettuce, tomato, and mayo unless otherwise requested. The okra, as usual, was excellent. I don't know who their supplier is for this product but I'd surely like to find out. Sometimes when I'm passing by this place I'll pop in just for an order of the okra. They always prepare it while I wait, the result being tasty golden brown orbs of okra. Top it off with a few dashes of Tabasco and you'll have a delicious light lunch. In previous visits I have enjoyed the cheeseburger poboy (great!), and the shrimp as well. I don't recall having anything to complain about with these items. Goodness knows they could teach their people something about service, and the etiquette of cleaning the dining room floor under people who are still eating in the dining room (etiquette hint: don't). But, it's a hole in the wall joint that pretends nothing in regards to etiquette and only brags about its role as purveying great poboys, which it does quite excellently. read more

The oyster po-boy was really good. I like the bread here. And the fries are good as well. The catfish and shrimp ones had too much breading and fried too long (imo). Plus I think the onion rings are really greasy as well. Will come back to try the roast beef. And another oyster one! haha. People working there were really nice and the place was clean. read more

Stopped here on our drive back from Florida. Felt like we really need to get something a little bit Cajun since we were in Louisiana. This place did not disappoint. First it was a little hard to find since it does sit off the main road, but with Google there were no issues finding it. We ordered several different Po Boys. One shrimp, one sausage and one double cheeseburger Po Boy. In addition we also had an order of the Onion Rings. Everything was excellent. The double cheeseburger Po Boy is huge so you should only order it if you are really hungry. The onion rings were probably some of the best onion rings that I have ever ate. This is definitely a place that more locals frequent as there seemed to be a steady stream of to go orders coming through. We ate inside and although there isn't much to see on the inside it sufficed for our meal. read more

Had shrimp po boy and it was great! Lots of shrimp and lettuce, tomato's and pickles! Excellent! Second day and the roast beef supreme. :-( One thin slice of roast beef and 1/2 slice of turkey. Order extra let and toms but got regular amount(same as above po boy). After fries and drink is was aprox $11.50 The cashier was friendly and very polite (hard to find quality in a fast food environment.) The person cleaning up(her name was val) seemed to get irritated when she had to go clean a table that a customer asked her to clean it for her. I could understand why, but the lady customer doing the asking was older and insisted a very specific table. The bread was toasted. The crust was not overly chewy and the inner bread was light and fluffy. Good job! Most sandwhich places have tough and chewy bread. The wait was pretty quick and All the tables were NOT wobbly and this is an overlooked component of sand which shop eating. The atmosphere ranged from older people, hipsters, soccer moms and young annoying college students. The tea was freshly brewed and was NOT overly steepped. While a double-cheeseburger po-boy complete with eight hamburger patties is solely responsible for the obesity epidemic. Shrimp PO boy. Bread was slightly chewy and the toppings were light. The overall flavor was good with good spice and crunch on the shrimp. Enough spice that I could not tell if they were frozen shrimp or fresh. Texture was good too and not overlooked.
