It doesn't get much further from Cajun country than Portland, but we got the bon chance that PoBoyz opened in our fair city serving up delicious food options Cajun style. Since my last trip to New Orleans a few years ago I've been craving some home cooking. In NOLA they'll deep fry anything. I had the fried shrimp sandwich. Served on a lightly buttered and toasted bun with iceberg lettuce, pickles and a savory rémoulade condiment, it was just so, so good. I only ordered the 6 inch. I didn't really eat much of the bread due to my Covid / ankle fracture diet. I figured I'd pretty much sabotaged it just by eating the deep fried shrimp. I will do it again it was that good. I ordered mine with the side of red beans and rice. The side was really good too. Next time I'll be sure to ask my server to hold the scallions on those. I started off the evening with a tear jerker of a Bloody Mary but ended up getting hammered with a category 5 hurricane. Our server, Jenna, she was the best. Not only was she our bartender but our server too. She was great. She surprised us all with a little lagniappe, some delicious pecan bites. It was a foregone conclusion that we'd end up dining at Poboyz at least once during our trip. The second my husband saw their sidewalk sign, he was sunk. We didn't even know what they offered, we just knew they had Cajun food, and that was all it took. We got our chance on a Friday afternoon, after spending several hours hiking through the parks and neighborhoods of Washington Park. They weren't too busy when we bustled in - there were just two other groups at the time. The lone waitress, Jennifer, welcomed us and invited us to pick any table in the dining room. We started scanning the QR code for the menu, but she came up with a couple hard copies. She did say that the digital menu had pictures, if we wanted to reference them. To start, we got an order of the fried pickles ($8) and the remoulade dipping sauce ($1 extra). For my main, I opted for the New Orleans Fried Shrimp Po Boy ($17) with the Cajun Fries as a side ($6!) and the remoulade dipping sauce (add another $1). My husband ordered the special of the day, which was their gumbo ($19). It seemed like they only had one guy working the kitchen that day, so it did take a bit of time for the food to come out. We didn't really mind, though - it was reasonably warm in the dining room and we were sitting, which gave our old tired bones a chance to rest. The pickle chips came out first, and we almost burned our faces digging in so quick. I'm so glad they were chips, not spears! They were expertly battered and fried, and I loved the tanginess the pickles imparted. The remoulade sauce was a nice option, as was the ranch dressing that came with the order. Our mains came out a few minutes later. The po boy was delicious, there's just no other word. The batter on the shrimp was crunchy and a bit fluffy - not as heavy as the batter used on the pickle chips. They seasoned the shrimp, as well, which only deepened the flavors of the sandwich. The Cajun fries were just okay. I definitely don't think they were worth $6 (SIX DOLLARS!), but we didn't know what to expect. (Side note: there used to be a Cajun restaurant in downtown San Diego that we loveloveloved; they served Cajun fries that were dipped in batter and fried, and they were heaven on a plate.) The bowl of gumbo my husband was served looked small, but turned out to be a big ol' serving of really rich gumbo. My husband is kind of a roux snob, so we were both pleased to see (and taste) their dark and silky gumbo. It really makes a difference with the dish, you know? At any rate, the gumbo was full of all the things you'd expect (chicken, tasso, green onions) and some things he hadn't planned on (crab legs!) We walked away full and happy, and with a couple of "frequent diner" cards that have since become a souvenir, given we live in another state. Definitely recommend this restaurant for some hearty and delicious food! read more

Formerly "PoBoyz food cart, now a brick-and-mortar. Great staff, great customer service, great food! They have a bar with a decent selection of alcohol, although most wouldn't consider it a "full bar." They are newly opened (Sept 2021) and will soon have a drink + happy hour menu. Street parking is a bit challenging evenings/weekends, due to their close proximity to several bars/clubs and Voodoo Donuts. I highly recommend the fried shrimp po'boy and seasoned fries. They are able to accommodate small groups, but I would suggest calling ahead if you have more than 4-6 people. read more

Found POBOYZ by accident while walking through the "food truck alley" and boyyyyy -- am I happy that we did! First off, the food truck is managed by a gentleman and his daughter -- both offering wonderful hospitality and a personable touch to the entire experience. The owner shared how he found the love for cooking and talked about the 'why' he founded POBOYZ. You can literally feel his passion and positive energy while talking to him. We ordered the Po-Bowl with fried shrimp. The beans, rice, and sauce married everything together nicely. Throw in some hot sauce and you will feel like you're holding a bowl of magic. We skipped the traditional dinner when we visited Portland and opted instead to try Food Truck Row. My husband was in heaven. Lol PoBoyz caught my eye, but lured me in after a sample. I love samples. The owner was definitely personable. In fact, probably the nicest we met the whole day in this town. I had a tough time picking between shrimp and sausage, so he mixed me an amazingly delicious bowl. I've really been anticipating the opening of their brick and mortar. It seemed like every time I was near the cart, they were closed... and I could never figure out where exactly their storefront it. FINALLY, I found 'em. When we approached, the owner (?) was sweeping outside and trying to entice people in. We were specifically there to try Po Boyz. There were about 3 other parties inside when we arrived. There was a QR code on the table advertising touch less ordering; I still had to touch the paper. The server brought over menus that were just printed sheets of paper stapled together. The special was braised pork fondue with chips. Totally should've gotten that. I've been interested in the fried ribs since I saw them on the menu, so you know those got ordered. I ordered the shrimp po boy and my boyfriend ordered the chicken po boy. The fried ribs were exactly that: fried ribs (yes, they are bone-in). They were tasty. The po boys weren't as tasty as we expected. There was a lot of bread, and the bread just wasn't that good. My fries came out cold. I want to try them again, for sure. But, I probably won't try a po boy. read more

As someone who is always longing for the return to New Orleans, it was pretty cool to find this spot in Portland. The owner/cook provided great service accompanied by some great tunes from their radio system. The cart looked very clean and lit up. I don't remember it being here so I'm going to assume it's a relatively new cart. I loved the atmosphere it provided being so little among this station. It had music playing and lights going on that it just felt authentic for southern food. I was in line with a few others, and it seemed like this cart was attracting more attention than the others surrounding it. I had ordered the fried chicken sandwich which took about 15-20 minutes to prepare. I ordered on an app 12-14 minutes prior to me arrive and still had to wait another 5-10 minutes. The sauces were all loaded at the front of the cart, self-serve style. The breading seemed a little thick. Chicken to breading ratio was about 1:2. The condiments and sauce were great in the sandwich. The chicken was soft enough where it felt fresh. The bread for some reason just wasn't cutting it for me. The sandwich was about half of a sandwich, and even after finishing it within 5 minutes I was still hungry and left pretty unsatisfied. I would try another plate on their menu but if I'm looking for something to fill me up I would maybe shop around due to pricing and portion. read more

I recommend everything as the kitchen is run by the owner who is here cooking all the time you can't do anything better in Portland... I was full from other food so I ordered the fried oysters to sample some of the food. Ive always had a soft spot for cajun/creole food like jambalaya, gumbo, etouffee, etc. Im glad I got something cause I dont ever order oysters yet he made me enjoy what I got. Figured I should get a taste of real seafood from a pro while Im in the pnw. The batter and seasoning itself should be award winning. The sauce is perfect and also should be award winning. This food truck is in the same lot as Stretch the Noodle and Bao Bao so it's easy to find. Please go try it, it's not a fluke but probably the best of its kind out of Louisiana. It's like I was back in New Orleans all over again .. all I can say is YUM. We came on a Thursday around 1:30pm and it wasn't busy at all( this used to be a food truck and after reading reviews their brick and mortar is newer) we were promptly seated and brought waters and the server was nice. The chef/owner came out and introduced himself and informed us he was trained by the very famous Leah chase which is who the Disney movie "the prince and the frog" was based upon. He even showed us pictures which I also thought was shot cool and personable! We ordered the Mac and cheese bites and the deep fried oysters for our appetizer and they both were well seasoned and so so flavorful ! I will say however the oysters were 13 dollars and only came with two which is a bit pricey in my opinion. My husband ordered the special of the day which was the seafood gumbo it came with a generous scoop of rice In the middle and was drowned with chicken seafood sausage and veggies in a delicious gumbo broth. I got the shrimp and grits which was also so so gooood! Both buttery and creamy and the shrimp really gave the dish an excellent kick. Two drinks Two entrees and two apps cost us about 60 dollars. My husband and I went to POBOYZ last night for a date. We have been SO excited to go. He went a few months ago and told me how amazing Randy (the owner) is and how incredible the food is. We got the shrimp and sausage Jambalaya, as well as the Fried Ribs dinner. We also got the Fried Pickle Chips. It goes without saying that the food is amazing. It's comfort food without a doubt. YOU NEED TO EAT HERE. But the experience we had with Randy and his wife is what we really want to highlight. I wanted so badly to like this restaurant but it just didn't give.... anything. First of all, I was taken aback when I noticed an offering on the menu: fried ribs with SLAVE SAUCE?!?! So extremely disappointed. Ive never had fried oreos before so I was super excited to try them. I have so many things to say...... First: the oil tastes super old and fishy. My oreo tasted like salty fish. They need a deep clean and start new with the oil. Second: the batter is the most salty, clumpy, thick batter I have ever tasted. It was so tough and not palletable that I had to take it off my three oysters to eat them. After removing all the fishy breading, I tried the oyster by itself. They were not fresh and were very close to turning bad. They were $11 for 3. Oh, I forgot to mention, these are from a can!!! I watched him grab them myself. Shrimp po bowl: it looks a hot mess, but looks can be deceiving. I've ate a lot of delicious food that look like disasters on a plate. These were not one of those plates. There was absolutely no seasoning in my beans and rice. Thebrice overcooked and mushymnThere were 4 tiny overcooked shrimp on top of the bowl. . I tried to mix it up to give it some flavor and suddenly to my surprise got a whole bunch of soggy, wilted lettuce from the bottom of the bowl. Just soggy on top of soggy and super bland. So disappointed in everything. Spent $35 plus a $5 tip and am sitting here with all this food getting cold. Anyone who knows me knows I don't like to waste food, but all this is being dumped. OHMYGAWD. Somehow manages to have the legit flavors of the Gulf Coast/Adadian/Cajun/Creole and yet without melting your face off. So good! And, what a great menu...! Warning: I lived in TX for 34 years. Many of those included weekly team lunches at places like the Rajun Cajun and many fishing trips that brought us all around the Gulf Coast were never complete without some serious local food from places that looked like they would blow down in a sizable beer belch. One of the things we absolutely adore and is, in my eye, the epitome of down-home, secret menu, you-only-know-if-your-local when on the Gulf Coast is... deep fried dill pickles and dill pickle chips. More on that later. Let's start off with my first visit... I had the fried shrimp Po'boy after a 50+ mile bike ride and it was HEAVEN. So much shrimp, I just couldn't keep it in the bun most of the time! Lots of authentic flavors and textures, but with less cayenne than at least I would consider average back in TX or LA, but that turned out to be a good thing, especially since the remoulade that came in a separate little container had a bit of spice and was packed with flavor (my idea of serious spice would make most Portlanders weep, just for clarity). I loved it so much, I knew I would be super popular at home if I picked up some takeout for my sweetie. I ordered the sautéed shrimp po'bowl (no bun, it has to be healthy, right?!) to go. I told them I'd have to fit it in my bike bag and they made up my order with small containers all wrapped in a plastic bag to avoid spillage... awesome. But, it gets better... I noticed the deep-fried ribs and began to opine... "Oh, it would be so awesome if you guys would put fried dill pickle chips on the menu..." (much batting of eyelashes and looking like a hungry puppy...) "Oh, we have that!" "You do? Oh, dayum! Add that on please!" And, let me tell you... these are some fantastic dill pickle chips, maybe the best I've ever had. My previous favorites, culled from dozens of candidates, were the version available at most coastal Vietnamese fish restaurants (yes, you heard that right) in places like Port Lavaca, Victoria, Freeport, or Beaumont. The local Vietnamese spin on them usually included corn flour, as well as a sprinkling of paprika and cayenne along with a remoulade or ranch dressing. They were crispy, salty, spicy, acidic..., deep-fried little bundles of wonderful. That said, the spices in the dill pickle chips at POBOYZ are a notch above even that, crispy and full of flavor, good enough without a sauce, but so perfect dipped in the remoulade! I can't believe that the best version of my favorite appetizer or snack might now be in Portland... (I might get tossed in a bayou for saying that back in TX)! Heading back on Saturday. Perfect thing to have on a rainy day in Portland. My boyfriend had never tried grits before and he loved it.
