Everything I ate at Poe's Tavern was delicious! Took off one star due to the odd way we were greeted and forced to wait. When we arrived at 4:45 there were 3 or more empty tables. We were told since we didn't have reservations that we would have to wait since the 5pm reservations would be in soon. No problem, but shortly after that they sat two other parties who also arrives without reservations. It was so odd. However when I inquired they were quick to seat us. I went for work with a very large group. Even though we had 20-30 people, every order was correct. It's a little pricey, but worth it for how unique the food is. I really enjoyed the Amontillado burger- it was super juicy and refreshing- would 100% get again. BUT they have so many entree options that I'd want to try something different next time. Every burger is named after an Edgar Allen Poe poem and can be chicken or beef. The bathroom is covered in his poems and even has an audio book playing! When you order a martini and the bartender ask what's in it, you already know its not going to be good. I'm not sure how you can screw up a martini but they did including serving it on the "Rocks". Service was horrible at the bar 10 min. Before being acknowledged. The topper was I request a 1/2gin1/2 vodka martini they said they had to charge me double for 2 liquors. I asked her how do you charge for a long island ice tea the answer was "We don't put liquor in our tea". This is what was behind the bar during happy hour on a Saturday afternoon. Food was good, indoor atmosphere is super neat with Edgar Allen Poe theme. I've never seen anything quite like it! Even the bathrooms are lined with his works. Food was not bad at all but Chicken breast was way to large for the bun and it was super hard to take a bite. Shoestring fries are always a hit for me, but the shredded cheese on top (when they have delicious bubbly melted cheese on their burgers?!) was a huge disappointment. I really wanted to love this place but based on what I had (the pit & pendulum burger) I was unimpressed. There are several burgers to choose from- standard cheese burger, bacon & cheese, one with Charleston style crab cake, pico de gallo and so on. Mine was the applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese burger with tomato, no lettuce or pickles and I opted for no side since the burger seemed pretty sizable on its own. I was excited for the fried onions in the side; however when I got my food my inner voice shouted "what is this?!". They forgot the fried onions (I asked for a side) and then the cheddar cheese was barely melted. Now don't get me wrong, the patty itself was cooked how I asked and tasted fine, but some of my brioche bun was soggy and then the burger was dry- there was no mayo, aioli, mustard or anything to really tie it together. There was ketchup and mustard at the table side, but I suppose I expected more. The burger was okay, at best but really nothing to write home about. Next time I would try another type and hopefully it will change my perspective. Our server Jonathan was great and super friendly. Our waiter came after a few minutes and took our orders, and our food came out pretty quickly. My family ordered the quesadilla in the sleeper, and I ordered the gold bug plus with a veggie patty with the sweet pepper goat cheese. I really like the burger because the patty tasted pretty good and the sweet pepper goat gave it a unique but delicious flavor. My family also liked their food, and finished their plates. I've walked by this place several times, and have always wondered why I never tried it. I met my friend here who was in town on a Saturday around 11am and we were seated immediately. This place doesn't have deserts, but they do sell some Leopold's cups of ice cream. We were a little bummed about that - but the food here was really good! We started off with the loaded fries, and they were so good. They came with chili, cheese, and scallions - delicious combo that almost left me too full to eat my entree. I opted for the buffalo shrimp tacos and my friend chose the burger. I work downtown, so know the area and where to go. I had to be at work a little earlier, so my wife went to the restaurant to get food, and was bringing it back to me. She got there at 8:10pm. She placed her order for two quesadillas, and a Rue Morgue to go. It took over an hour and a half for the food, while the woman kept telling my pregnant wife, and two small children, it would be 20 minutes. When the food finally came out the chicken quesadillas were just shells, no chicken, and not even enough cheese to keep the shells together. My Rue Morgue was ONLY fries and the under cooked veggie burger. No chili, no cheese, and no egg on top. Literally missing all the ingredients that made the dish. My wife said something about the food and the hostess, or whoever it was, just shrugged it off. My wife then asked for a manager and they refused to get a manager. Now it's AFTER 10pm, so almost 2 hours, and I now had to work all night without eating that day. My pregnant wife got to eat a tortilla shell. Not only will I not come back there, and the place I work has all said they will no longer go there (they order lunch from there commonly), but we will definitely tell other people to avoid the restaurant. Way to make sure you lose business by not making the food that was ordered, taking hours for to go food, and then shrugging it off as if your business doesn't matter. We popped in for drinks on a hot, humid Saturday evening. The bar was not too crowded, off the beaten path of all the tourists. It was cool inside and there were a few empty seats at the bar. We sat down and the bartender immediately brought over some drink menus. There were several interesting Edgar Allen Poe inspired cocktails and over 20 kinds of beers on tap. I wanted to try a local beer since we were visiting Georgia. Our bartender was friendly and happy to give some samples. I first tried an "Emergency Drinking Beer" which sounded intriguing and was good; just not what I wanted. (More of a fruity sour; but I did like the name!). She actually suggested I try a few different beers to make sure I wasn't just "settling." I chose the "Orange Diva" beer because it was a blood orange wheat beer that was brewed in Georgia. It was perfect and only $7.50. My husband had an old-fashioned that he really enjoyed and it was just $12. There were several friendly locals hanging at the bar while we were there, and we had fun talking with them. The decor is minimal; but definitely Poe inspired: church pews at the entrance, a large brick portrait on the wall between the bar and entrance, pages of Poe's books lining both bathroom walls, and a library shelf of old books at the end of the hall. I would definitely visit this place again for drinks or maybe try a meal. read more
