Ok, so I've been to Ojai a bunch of times now and it took me a while to even notice this street and even then it wasn't until my most recent trip I noticed this shop-mostly because I saw a dog go in and out of there. When I came back the dog was gone but what I found instead was a friendly lady behind the counter who said it was probably the owner's dog but they had both gone for the day. It's primarily a wine shop but when I mentioned I'm here for the beer I was directed to the back corner with the cooler. The sign up front mentioned East Coast beers and I was curious to see what they had/expecting to roll my eyes at the usual suspects I've seen so far only to be pleasantly surprised, not just by the East Coast breweries represented but just the quality of beers and styles. I got excitable as to choice, not just because there were beers that were hard to find even their home locations but they had some GREAT European beers as well, ones I hadn't seen in a while or in formats that I hadn't seen. I snatched up a couple bottles and 4-packs and was expecting to pay a lot more than I ended up paying. While my items were being rung up I couldn't help but ask how in the world were these beers even available here? Did they fall off a truck and bounced three thousand miles? The secret is that the owner was a beer sales rep out East and still maintains good relationships. Good relationships, good beer. I half want to go hoard them a bit/drink them quickly so I can go back before anyone is the wiser. read more

A "Best of Ojai!" Though I expected we could find decent wines to drink during our stay in Ojai, I was surprised and delighted to find a shop of this caliber in town. There are many choice selections to be had, including outstanding French and Italian selections on the shelves: a friend picked up a bottle of amarone that we really enjoyed. But what first caught my eye was a sterling selection of Gruner Veltliners and other Austrian and German wines. Turns out that Bob Huey, the owner, enjoys them and seeks out other, lesser-known, delicious, well-made, and food-friendly wines that will delight anyone with an adventurous palate. When we're in Portugal or Italy, we drink the local wines and it seemed appropriate to do the same thing in Ojai. Bob and other staff members were excellent guides to many of the reds and whites from the Central Coast that we don't often see on the East Coast -- Dragonette Pinot Noir and Sandhi Chardonnay turned out to be two of our favorites. Many of these gems also show up on the wine list at The Dutchess, where you can taste some by the glass or select bottles from their page-long list of Central Coast wines. The staff knows these wines, so if you're keen to learn about them, they can tell you a lot. Or if you want something for dinner -- or a bottle for a special occasion -- they'll recommend some great choices for you. 5 stars and they deserve every one. I first visited with my husband in February of last year. We stumbled on Point De Chene on a weekend trip to Ojai and decided to go in for a tasting. The wine was fantastic and so was everyone there. Locals were hanging out and shooting the breeze with the owner and other employees. We asked about the shop and learned they source from small vineyards. We stayed until closing and had a wonderful time. In December, we went back again and were so sad to see that they could not longer offer tastings due to a new order in Ojai that prevents businesses without a sink in tasting areas from offering tastings. Something to that effect anyway. The same was true of oil and vinegar tastings at Carolina Gramm. A shame and I hope this changes soon if it hadn't already. So, we asked for a recommendation and got a great bottle of Chenin Blanc. They even gave us the information for the local cabbie because there were no Ubers around. And now here we are in the COVID times. Small businesses are working hard to stay afloat and we should support them if we can. I saw they were offering a 4 pack of rosé for pickup or local delivery. They're 2 hours away from us so I called to see about getting some wine shipped. We ended up settling on a case of hand-selected picks based on my husband's and my preferences. Here for the beer! I stumbled upon this place when walking around the shops of Ojai and was really impressed by the well thought out selection of craft beer from around the United States and the world. Hard to find beers from Belgium, Scandinavia, Japan, and the US east coast could be found in the corner of the shop dedicated to beers. It's easy to trust that any of the beers sold here are high quality as the care in selecting them is obvious and the reasons/stories the employees have for why they've selected them are shared when you're shopping. While I was not specifically looking for wine on this trip, the selection of wines from California and around the world is well-curated and nicely organized in the store. Great people working here and able to make solid recommendations for whatever beverage you have interest in. read more

What a treat this is. Great wine selection, and the proprietor is incredible to talk with. His knowledge was extensive and the inventory reflects that. Pricing seemed fair - certainly not a bargain shop, but it's Ojai. What do you expect? The only concern I have is - unfortunately- a big one. The store doesn't appear to be climate controlled, so I am unlikely to be comfortable purchasing a bottle here again. The first of the bottles we opened was clearly heat damaged. This could have been bad luck, but it certainly concerned me. The shop owner made it right! read more
