Gluten-free Italian food? Yes! Surprisingly, everything from the bread, starters, entrées, sides, and house-made desserts contain NO gluten. Although I don't have to be gluten-free, I certainly feel better with my reduced intake. Finally, a bread plate can be set before me and I can eat a slice with their unique dipping sauce that is reminiscent of a Chinese dipping sauce. Here's what we had: gluten-free bread + dipping sauce - bread was super soft arancini - crispy-on-the-outside and cheesy-on-the-inside fried rice ball, there were some bits on the outside that were hard pork chop with polenta - this was a special and the pork was perfectly cooked and juicy, 5 out of 5 halibut piccata with mashed potatoes - solid preparation, no complaints mushrooms with polenta - mild tasting birthday cake - beautiful looking, but stodgy at the base Although I'd come back for the pork chop, everything was well-prepared and nobody left disappointed. Tucked away underneath Charley's is a gem of a restaurant called Polenteria. With the feel of a European bar and 50s era dining room, Polenteria has a menu featuring twists on classic items such as Short Rib, Eggplant Parmesan and a unique variety of polenta dishes. The bread and butter appetizer is super fresh and a great starter. The focaccia is reminiscent of pound cake in its moistness and density. The Chicken Marsala was just right, not overcooked and loaded with mushrooms and string beans on a bed of puréed mashed potatoes. The Watermelon & Crispy Pork Belly salad was different from any salad I've ever had. There was a soft bacon-like quality to the pork belly cubes and the watermelon had been seared and seasoned. The Limoncello Martini was a bit vodka-forward but good. I organized a company holiday dinner there a couple years ago and their manager was very accommodating. Apparently they opened the restaurant for us on an evening that they are normally closed. But there were 3 or 4 other parties seated nearby so we didn't have the entire place to ourselves which was fine but a little surprising. I tried the massive Tomahawk Steak while other people ordered their polenta dishes and Scallop Risotto. Everyone enjoyed their dishes and had a memorable night. Had been on my list to try for quite some time as it seemed like a very interesting place in LG downtown. I finally got the chance with a couple of friends one day after work. We were seated pretty quickly and the food was served relatively fast as well (no complaints about the service). The issues are with the food itself. One of my friends bit into a chunk of gravel in his polenta dish, which we assumed was part of a wild mushroom that wasn't cleaned properly. Very unpleasant and painful experience for him. My dish -- the gnocchi -- had ample amounts of fragrant basil, but was oversalted, and the gnocchis were way too big and dense. Should have been much lighter, fluffier and smaller. Could have been better on multiple facets, for sure. Not yet sure if I will be back, leaning no. read more

We went back after 3 years and the food was very nice. The flavors come out in every bite. We started with their fried cheese balls and I loved the textures and the subtle flavors of the cheese. I went on to the chicken with white sauce which was subtly spicy and diverse. We also tried the arrabbiata cheese main course which was also wonderfully nice. Wow wow wow! This place is a best kept secret of LG! We had a fabulous anniversary dinner here. It is a small restaurant with an unassuming little entrance in a back parking lot. There are around 10 tables with some seating at the bar... incredibly romantic with dimmed lights and comfy seating. The service was so friendly and kindly welcomed us upon arrival. All of the staff seemed like they truly cared about their diners and made sure the food that was coming out was top notch. What sets this restaurant apart is that all of their pasta is made from scratch and gluten free! This means we felt less guilty and bloated after eating all of the pasta. ;) The start of the meal was the arancini... omg out of this world good. The buttery wine sauce with melted cheese was sinfully delicious. I will go back just for those. I loved my grapefruit tequila cocktail, and we had the servers constantly checking to make sure we were good with how much water and sparkling water was poured which was a nice touch. I had the burrata strawberry salad and it was fresh and just what I wanted for the night. My husband had the vodka pasta, and had to fight me off from stealing too much. ;) When pasta is made fresh like at this restaurant, the pasta is irresistibly soft; makes all the difference in the flavor. Thank you thank you Today is my 35th wedding anniversary. My husband was diagnosed with celiac disease in May. we haven't been able to go out and really celebrate with a good meal because almost every single time he gets cross contamination and before you know it he's in the bathroom with severe stomach cramps. Today's meal was so good so flavorful the service was amazing so much that my husband was overwhelmed that he went outside and teared up because we are both foodies and enjoyed eating and our life has changed tremendously since the diagnosis even though we live about an hour and a half away, we know that this could always be our place to go to for future celebrations or just to get away for a good meal. I've been looking forward to the Brushetta flight because it was sooooo good last time. Charred, huge slice of bread, plenty of toppings. This time, just plain, cold, small slices of a baguette. Toppings were definitely smaller. This really disappointed me. As for the entrees, my partner got the beef short rib ragu and barely touched it. He didnt like it, said it was gamey and the sauce wasn't good. For me, I was still pretty hungry so I ate all of the lamb shank. But its not worth $48. Taste was average. I will say that the drink here are pretty expensive around $20 each and nothing super special about them. And the bread is no longer free, a bread plate is $5. Service: service here is great. I did feel a little close and feel like I could easily hear both conversations to the right and left of me. What an absolute gem of a place. I've parked in the parking lot so many times and never noticed this lovely quaint restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant it feels very private with lovely white table cloth setting. Lovely comfortable chairs. It's not a large space, more an intimate setting which I find refreshing as you don't need to look for a staff member. Chris, our service was just absolutely fantastic. She's so very friendly and helpful. Service was prompt. Also, compliments to the chef, for the memorable and delicious mean. The filet was perfection, and the mashed potatoes were so fluffy and tasty. My friend ordered the strawberry salad and I immediately wished I had also ordered that as well, but I will go again soon and order the strawberry salad. She said she'll order that again next time. We visited last year for takeout and we were very happy with our portion sizes and flavors. Unfortunately, this last visit, our entrees were more like appetizer-sized. We were disappointed that the small plates were also lacking in flavor. We had the braised short ribs--the meat was a tiny portion on a spoonful of polenta. The spaghetti and meatballs were also lacking in both size and flavor. The bread we purchased was delicious with a lovely dipping sauce. We also ordered the tiramisu, to share, and it was fantastic. Third review of this place , this time for brunch. Food was interesting and fresh, especially the gluten free biscuit, but the portions were very small and overpriced. My eggs Benedict had ONE poached egg. For $23.. that's a bit insane. The waiter was super nice and as always, the place was very classy, but I was surprised at the portion size. Hopefully they take this into consideration as they serve brunch more. Or at least serve it with a side of fruit or something to supplement. Adorable little restaurant in Los Gatos! I went there with a few friends and tried the bruschetta flight, chicken Parmesan, and formaggio polenta. What works: -- the whole menu is gluten free! -- Lovely atmosphere. It's a small space with soft lighting, candles on each table, and throw pillows in each booth. It felt very cozy -- music was fun but not too loud or distracting -- the bruschetta flights were a fun way to try out some new flavors! An intimate place, it has just a handful of seats so it's romantic if you want it to be and cozy.The vegan bolognese mushroom dish was very good as was the bread. Polenteria did not disappoint! Looove Italian food but don't always love the feeling of rolling to the car after consuming all of the carbs and gluten. Found this place and was instantly intrigued. Gluten free Italian food?! Seemed very controversial so I had to investigate. Despite it being 6p on a Friday night there was a surprising amount of parking available - both street parking and in the public lots. We lucked out and found a spot in the lot right behind the restaurant. This is almost never the case, so plan to get there a little earlier in case you have to do a few laps to find a spot. In addition to the lot right behind the restaurant there are two other public lots within walking distance. What we weren't so successful at was finding the actual door to enter the restaurant. It was dark out when we arrived and the signage and clear indicators of an entryway were very sparse. See my photo for where to enter. The other strange thing was there's no handle on the outside of where you enter so again, we were kind of baffled. Again, it was dark and we were starving so maybe we missed it. However, we were spotted by someone waiting to greet and seat us so we only looked lost for a moment. The vibe is really cute, cozy, and tight. Some say private, romantic... maybe... but here's where we come to my only real complaint - the two guys sitting maaaaybe a foot away from us spewing nothing but business jargon and buzzwords around the table all night. Time and a place for all of that Sirs, and Polenteria isn't it. If the restaurant was bigger and there was more room in between our table it might have been easier to block them out. While no one can help that, I'd be lying by if I said it didn't detract from the experience. Now more importantly - the food! Starting with the gluten free bread, roasted garlic, and butter - probably the best bread I've ever had. Super soft and extremely flavorful. If store bought gluten free bread tasted like that I'd probably eat it more. The drinks were deliciously balanced. The main courses and desserts were perfectly portioned and cooked impeccably. Service was great from the moment we looked like deer in headlights trying to find the entrance. Our waitress was amazing and attentive. Depending on the number in your party they have certain time limits for how long you can eat and linger. While we didn't seem rushed, they definitely kept it moving, ensuring plates came out in a timely manner - which I prefer, but others might not. Exchange Date The brainchild of Yvonne Khananis--who operates several small businesses in LG, including Reverence Catering, which operates out of the same kitchen--Polenteria is a hole-in-the-wall eatery tucked away in a DT Los Gatos back-alley and specializes in gluten-free (mostly) Italian fare. It seemed like the perfect place for a date night, as the cozy atmosphere, intriguing cocktails, and higher-end chefy cuisine had all the earmarks of a great meal. The Good: *Definitely make a reservation (book through their website for now) as this seven-table eatery with limited hours fills up fast. *Great ambiance, décor and music selection makes this place intimate and romantic but not overly so that it's cheesy. *As I mentioned above, the restaurant is 100% gluten-free, so if this is a concern for you, then rest at ease. *Carissa really enjoyed her cocktail and said it had the perfect amount of alcohol without overwhelming the other flavors. *Arrancini (sic) was definitely one of the top-10 things I've eaten all year. The crispy exterior and fluffy, cheesy interior worked harmoniously with the garlic, calabrian chili sauce. I could eat a dozen of these with every meal and gladly do an extra hour on the elliptical every day without complaining. *Pork Chop special was delicious, but the star of the show was the prosciutto jam/sauce that was sweet, savory, and full of crispy chunks of prosciutto that reminded us of burnt ends. It's definitely one of those things that needs to be tried to believe how good it is. *Scallop app was delicious and had a nice sear on it. We especially liked the chipotle-esque sauce that had a nice smokiness and warmth. *Service by Yvonne (not the owner) was friendly and delightful *Our first time, trying gluten-free bread, and it was quite interesting how close it gets to the real thing. I'm not sure if they plan to expand their times or not, but for right now, they're only open four days a week (Wed - Sat). *No beers on-tap, but they had a nice selection of Italian beers--including an Italian American-style IPA, which wasn't half-bad. *We placed an order for stuffed polenta, but somehow, the kitchen brought out another order of the Arancini? I'm not sure if we accidentally received someone else's order, or it was just a snafu--but irregardless, we loved them so much we decided not to point it out and just enjoyed another round. *Lemon Ricotta Cake was probably the low-point of the night, as the flavor wasn't as strong as we would've liked--especially from a citrusy dessert. I love a sharp lemon flavor when it comes to desserts, and this missed that mark. On the plus side, at least it wasn't overly sweet, and the texture was nice. The Ugly: *Finding this place is a bit of a fishing expedition, as there's no real clear signage guiding you, and their logo is very understated. Spoiler alert: Look for the colorful Reverence Catering sign, and it's just to the right of that. *DTLG is always a nightmare to park (especially on weekends) but be patient because this place is worth it. John surprised me with reservations for Polenteria on our date night. We'd both been eyeing this place so I was excited to check it out. There is no outdoor dining and there are about seven tables inside (super intimate) but we adored it. You could just tell the time and effort that put into the design of the space and things like the wooden dishes and the incredibly soft cloth napkins. The service was amazing. My cocktail was superb--fantastic flavor and nice alcohol content (which means I was feeling it halfway through). The food was outstanding. Our favorite was the arancini del giorno. The first bite gave me feelings of comfort and home. I had to close my eyes and just savor it on my tongue. Perfectly seasoned and so delicious. Definitely a must get. My scallops were cooked perfectly. And I had several bites of John's pork chop dish which was amazing. The lemon ricotta cake was good. We liked that it was light and not very sweet. Just when you think downtown LG is saturated with too many restaurants, a new one comes along and proves you wrong. Barcelona Teleferic was the last tone and now Polenteria joins the list. I was out for a walk late last night and decided to cheat and get some food and a Yelp search brought up Polenteria. It was hard to find since they don't have signage and in the back of the block behind Pizza My Heart facing the parking lot. It ended up being a hidden gem. It is a small cozy restaurant with great service and awesome food. The exec chef was the one who waited on us and was very charming. The arancini was awesome and so was the carne polenta. The lemon risotto cake was perfect, it was light and not overly sweet and a great end to the meal. The presentation of everything was wonderful including the bread plate. The decor is warm and comfortable, loved the old-school style wax candle. They have a full bar and good wine list as well. Wishing them the very best! read more

From start to finish, a sublime experience! Coziest, most intimate dining experience in the Los Gatos area, probably beyond! The starters were superb, from the caprese to the incomparable arrancini. Cocktails were well made and well described! As far as mains go, my girlfriend and I both went pasta-forward, and I have to say Luc's pasta stole the show. Whoever it's named after must be quite the stud. Furthermore, after a brave attempt to finish our impeccable tiramisu, we left not only stuffed and satisfied, but even more in love than we were before! It turned out to cost $40 which, I think, was more than the polenta. It was good, but not that good. Yes, I should have asked the price, but I didn't. Nor did I expect the waiter to recommend that expensive of a wine. I later looked at the wine menu. In my opinion the wines are way too expensive, in general. So enjoy the polenta. I had a great experience dining there with my father on St Patrick's. The menu was limited because of the holiday, so I obviously wanted to come back to experience the full menu! Norma, our server was wonderful! The Calamari and the meatball appetizers were delicious! My friend had the Halibut (fantastic!) and I had the Sausage pasta in a vodka cream sauce! And honestly, I've been in the industry my whole career-and we could never find a gluten free pasta that actually tasted good enough to serve for our clientele. This pasta here is unbelievable! You would never know it's gluten free! And it very well be one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had! And I've now ordered it 7 times for takeout! The creamy Brie, tart apple and sweet honey on the soft bread was delicious. For salads we each got out own: I got the Colossea: granny smith apple, red onion. goat cheese, dried cranberry, rield greens, balsamic. It was delicious I would order it again. My husband also couldn't resist himself. The only thing I would say is it would have been better with more goat cheese. Rucola Classica: arugula, cherry tomato, shaved parmesan. lemon oil. My husband ate every bite, for something light and fresh would suggest. caprese: roasted roma tomato, burrata, fresh basil, E.V.O.O.. This was a beautiful presentation and my aunt said it was delicious. For entrees: Short Rib: this was delicious, the meat was so tender and green beans cooked perfectly in garlic. I would make sure someone at the table orders. The sauce does have kick to it. Pork Chop Special: my aunt and I split this and it was perfect size for two. They were so kind to split it in the back. The crust on this pork chop was so unique and delicious I would love to know how it was done! And then the sauce on top was delicious. Not to mention the polenta was fabulous. And last but not least, Dessert: Flourless Chocolate Cake - ice cream and raspberries on top with a decadent chocolate gooey cake.
