In the airport in San Salvador there is a Pollo Campero. People used to buy pieces of chicken by the hundreds literally and bring them to the United States. Often times you could smell the chicken on the planes leaving Central America. In the US, people would come from near and far to pay $2 or more per piece. For Central Americans, this is a little piece of home away from home. When Pollo Campero started opening restaurants in the United States, they were greeted by very long lines of people wanting to get a taste of home, and some people would travel long distances just to eat there. Now we have one in Manassas. When you drive by on Route 234 you can even smell it if you have your windows down. If you go in there at lunch or dinner time, it's packed. Everybody seems to be in a good mood too. Anti-immigrant fanatics should note that the menus are all in English only. The specialty is fried chicken. It smells awesome, and it tastes pretty good too. It's not a greasy as KFC. I'm biased because it brings back memories of many a pleasurable trip to Central America. The sides, drinks and desserts are what sets it apart from American fast food. They have Central American favorites like rice and beans, yucca and fried mature plantains [Consumer Alert: the fried plantains are so damn good you might be tempted to overeat]. They also have key lime pie which is pretty decent. I am a chocoholic, but the only thing I prefer over chocolate is key lime pie. read more

I came here once before with the wife. I can't remember what she ate, but I had the 3 piece chicken taco and it was great. I love their yuca fries and dipping sauce (I think it's mayo based). I happened to work from home today (Wednesday) so I was nearby, and every Wednesday is their $1 2-piece special. So I figured I'd swing by and get as many legs and thighs as I could fit into my stomach. Unfortunately their special is limited to 2 per customer. Don't make the mistake I made and try to order four of them; their english is a bit hard to understand when they try to explain that you can only order two. The yuca fries are wonderful, crispy on the outside but soft and tender on the inside. The fried chicken is great too. Don't expect thick batter, it's more of a thin, crunchy skin instead of the heavy coatings from other chain chicken places. Service is kind of slow, but I think that's because they make the yuca fries on demand (at least the two time I've been here so far). I'm willing to wait a little longer for fresh fries! Eat-in service is great, they bring the food to your table, and (like a sit-down restaurant) they stop by to ask you if everything is ok or if you need anything else. read more

I moved to Manassas a few months ago and I drive by this place all the time. I finally decided to check it out a few days ago when my brother was in town. Never again. We got some of the chicken and split a few of the sides (rice and beans, cole slaw, plantains, and campero rice). The campero rice was the only side that was not terrible. The chicken was legit, about as good as the Colonels. Oh, we got the Horchata that was pretty good. The reason I give it a 1 though, is because of what the food did to my system. I spent the next two days planted on the toilet and so did my brother. So, I would not recommend going here unless you enjoy pooping a lot. read more

I'm so sad and disappointed. To start with I was the second person in line. I got to the cash register and the cashier told me 1 mimute. Then another cash register was opened and rather than taking my order they took the order of the next three people behind me. Eventually someone else came to the cash register who was very nice and after about 5 minutes took my order. My empanada was delicious. My order of yuca left much to be desired. It was not fresh. And it included only 5 pieces. They were so bad I didn't even eat them. Perhaps I should have gone in and complain but at this point I just wanted to leave with a shred of dignity. Got the $8.99 combo special, Comes with your choice of 4 pieces of chicken, fried or rotisserie, and two sides, I got the fries and coleslaw. I thought the chicken was very unique, very juicy and flavorful, I love the spice blend here on the chicken, it gives a nice citrusy/spiciness you don't find often. Fries were very good and simple. The coleslaw was nice but on the lighter side, less mayo but still good. Fried chicken was really good, dangerously juicy and crispy. A must try. read more

The first time I went here, I was looking for good Peruvian(ish) chicken. Every time since, I've gone for the amazing tacos. That's not to say the whole chicken meals aren't good, they are. But they're not the reason to go here. Not my reason, at least. The tacos, of which there are only four choices, are all amazing. You can get the meal with a side, or just get one of each taco, and a drink for around $8 and, unless you're starving or a sumo wrestler, you'll be stuffed. Each taco (for only $1.50) comes with fresh and tasty grilled or breaded chicken, cheese, veggies, and some kind of sauce. I prefer the grilled chicken tacos, but the breaded chicken with chipotle sauce is great too. I'm seriously tempted to eat here every day... and currently trying to think of a good reason why I don't. Besides the food, the service (for a fast-food/quick-serve restaurant) is outstanding. I've always been greeted warmly at the register and when my food is brought out. Atmosphere is a bit lacking though, so you probably won't 'hang around long after you're done eating, but I wouldn't really go to this type of restaurant planning to sit around for very long anyway. Pollo Campero may only do one thing, but they do it very well. As long as you're in the mood for chicken, you can't go wrong here. Definitely try the tacos. Then go back and try the tacos. Haven't been here in a couple of months but since when did this become a sit down restaurant? As you walk in they ask if it's to honor eat in. If you say eat in, A waitress brings over a menu and takes your order. They still deliver the food to the table like they used to but now they take your order while you're seated, bring the bill to your table and expect a tip! Seriously? I came here for lunch with a friend. My first visit since the Yelp party (only because I am not close by). We were both happy with the chicken, which was moist and tasty. For sides we had fried plantains and black beans. I ordered an Horchata and we got free warm tortilla chips for checking in on Yelp. Service was great. Service is at a counter and then seats are first come first serve. Food here is actually quite tasty and well seasoned. I generally dislike cole slaw however, the Peruvian slaw here is sweet and actually absolutely perfect atop one of the South American tacos. Rice, beans, tacos, all very tasty and at a good price. Service here is counter only and the employees speak English at a high enough level to order basic things but I wouldn't ask them any complicated questions to be honest. Prices are very fair and portions are good as well. Cleanliness was somewhat spotty with dirty tables, cafeteria-grade food prep, and very fast foodish décor. Certainly nothing fancy. Parking is abundant in a private lot so stop by for lunch sometime, it's good to expand out beyond a typical sandwich every now and then. read more

I had the #2 Meal: 1 thigh & 1 drumstick, dinner roll, drink, and side of fried plantains all for less than $6. I love fried chicken, so I was a little excited to try Latin America's most popular fried chicken chain. I was not disappointed. The chicken meat was juicy and flavorful (some of my coworkers got grilled half chicken, and the breast meat looked juicy as well). The fried batter was thin (like KFC's original recipe) and crispy as opposed to the 3D fried batter look of Popeye's chicken. The seasoning in the batter reminded me of Roy Roger's old recipe for some reason. I do not recommend the chicken tenders. It was not the same seasoning as the fried chicken. The batter had an interesting Old Bay-like taste to them and were slightly over salted. Sides: The fried plantains were good, but some of them were a little overdone. The dinner roll was like a normal Parker House roll. The tortillas were made of corn. The Campero beans tasted like normal pork baked beans. Desserts: The flan was good and normal tasting. They also serve Tres Leches cake, which I want to try some time. Overall, I would not mind adding this to my lunch rotation. Good meal for the price. But it is not something I would crave and make a special trip out to get. Definitely caters to the Latin American crowd. Their soda fountain has Fanta Strawberry and Orange soda. One gripe is that they had like 2 or 3 attendants in the eating area, which is understandable because they bring the food to you and clean your tables. Yeah, I love fried chicken so I gave this place a try. This is not typical American-style Southern fried chicken, it's a Latin/South American chain so the spices are different but man, are they good! The chicken is freakin' tasty, whatever it's marinated in is delicious. I also like that it's not too heavily breaded, just dusted and then fried. I usually get either black beans, plantains or cole slaw as a side. They also give you a choice of corn tortillas or bread roll. I've never tried any of the roasted chicken, go for the fried stuff. If you eat in they usually bring you a little boat of tortilla chips when you sit down and they deliver your order to your table. There's a nice little fresh salsa bar too. The unnecessary move to seat patrons rather than continue counter service for casual diners was bad enough as we still feel obligated to tip but today, when I attempted to order my favorite verde empanadas, was told by our server that they are no longer offered as a menu item, only chipotle empanadas are available. To be honest, I had tried Pollo Campero many years ago and was not too thrilled. The second time around, I hit up this location and it was great! I had the empanadas, yuca fries, coleslaw, guava drink, and cuatro leches (it was part of a Yelp! event so they fed us a ton!). The empanadas were the non-spicy citrus ones. They were perfect--crisp on the outside, soft, seasoned, and cheesy on the inside. The coleslaw was good-had some cilantro in it, which I enjoyed. The yuca fries were tasty and served with a mayo/ketchup sauce (fancy sauce!). The cuatro leches was a bit too rich for me--had about 1/2 inch of caramel on top. The texture was great, but I did need to scrape some caramel to the side. Overall, this place was very clean, fast, and tasty. Like the Terminator, I'll be back! read more

The chicken is OK, maybe a step above KFC but nowhere near as good as any Peruvian chicken joint like Guapo's. I ordered the grilled chicken but they were out so got the fried by default. The white meat was dry and tasteless, the dark meat a little better. The campero beans were decent but nothing to bring me back. The flan was awful. It had a mealy processed flavor that really turned me off. The place is bright and clean but the soda machine and toppings are in a corner where people wait for their orders. I have been here 5 times since it opened. The first time, I thought this was my new favorite restaurant. The grilled chicken was great. So juicy, amazing. I am not really much into fried chicken though. The sides have always been lame. I don't think anyone ever comes back here to have the sides. I have tried them all. The second through fifth times, I became more and more disappointed. I figured out that it all depends on how long the chicken sits around before you get it. If it is fresh, it is pretty good, if not it is dry and bland. On the fifth visit a few weeks ago, it was another bland visit. My friend had the chicken strips which I had a taste of, the only way I can describe them is very TV dinnerish. Afterwards my stomach let me know I won't ever be back here. My Camperitos were not fully cooked and were pink throughout, when I told the cashiere she did not understand me. (or at least pretended not to) Salsa bar is really dirty but the chips are ok. Yucca side is NOT served with honey mustard, usually a chipotle mayo. It came out late and it was cold, not crispy and with the wrong sauce---- went uneaten. Our confused waitress said she couldn't find the right one and brought us more nasty honey mustard. The customer service here is poor to none and IMHO they don't want customers that are not Hispanic, they are rude and stared at my family. They speak only limited English at the register and as a result you don't get what you want. If you want to take it with you, be prepared to muddle through asking for boxes. I downloaded yelp just to write this review of my experience tonight at Pollo . I was shocked at the portion when I got back to my hotel which was two minutes away. Being a foodie I would never recommend this place. The portion of chicken breast for a two peice was literally four bites. They knew it so they threw in a tiny leg to try to cover thier lack of chicken. The chicken was cold and so was the french fries. The seasoning on the grilled chicken was ok but besides being small it was dry. My husbands fried chicken was hot but it was also dry and his fries were cold. Pollo Campero has my favorite chicken. I first discovered Pollo Cammpero in Miami. Then traveling to Virginia I noticed the sign in Manassas on Sudley Road. I went in and the people are friendly and of course the chicken is awesome! It's sort of funny I eat there almost every day! Hahaha! They now know me by name. It's great. If I could give no stars I would. We were in the mood for some Peruvian chicken. When we went in it seemed kind of like a fast food style. After ordering we start around for 35 minutes waiting in our food. Pretty much everyone in the restaurant was very agitated. After getting home and being very annoyed, it was fried chicken. The facility was about what you'd expect but the staff were friendly. We decided on a family meal to go so we could share with our roommates. We ordered the 12 piece Peruvian fried chicken, plantains, black beans, yuca fries, and the tortillas - I know a lot of carbs. Everything tasted fantastic! The chicken didn't have heavy feeling that other chains have & the spices used were a pleasant change. The plantains were m personal favorite while my husband really enjoyed the yuca fries. The black beans were decent - nothing to write home about but no something I won't order again. Overall I'm extremely happy with the priced we paid for the service and quality/amount of food. First of all, context. I am from Puerto Rico, where we eat rice and beans at least once (if not twice) a day and still can't get enough. I have also lived in MX for 4 months and learned to love the very different and delicious ways they prepared the rice and beans. Having set the stage, Pollo Campero's beans blew me away! I have NEVER had beans that packed that much flavor! Even their fried chicken bites were amazing! The batter's flavor elevates the dish and packs it full with flavor making it the hero of the plate. They serve the heroic chicken bites with a cream based sauce, that compliments the chicken incredibly well; like the prefect sidekick. Empanadas were great and their chipotle sauce was a delicious compliment to the chips they start you of with. Our visit was during their lunch rush. Though the food took about 10-12 minutes to be served, the quality of the food more than made up for the wait. Our experience concluded with the visit of the manager Sylvia checking up on our lunch. Definitely coming back here. I challenge all rice and bean connoisseur to give it a taste. You will Not regret it. read more
