Chicken was so good and the rice and beans tasted awesome we would drive a long ways for this!

Third time here and I still have not found a flaw in the system. To me the chicken is obviously the serious star but the Mac salad has changed the way I view that dish. Not only fresh but not overly done with dressing. AND ITS SPICY !!!! WHUUUUUUUUT ?!? Again this has changed how I will view other Mac salads forever.... (sorry Mom and Tía but y'alls might as well have raisins in it cause it will never compare) The salsas are spicy but not over powering, the carne has more than just the smoke flavor. Beans...... fu-git-about-it....like a Sunday BBQ at the park and someone is trying to impress/show up the rest of the family Rice has its own flavor and the Piña is grilled to perfection. During Arizona visits, a few good local meals are always on my agenda, and after a little Yelp perusing, I stumbled upon Pollos Lachuya. It absolutely didn't disappoint. It's nestled right between a dollar store and a small Mexican restaurant, and does not have a sign on the front of the building like the other strip mall establishments. The menu was pretty simple, basically either chicken or steak in a few preparations, and pick your sides. I opted for the half chicken with two medium sides, picking rice and beans. It also came with pickled onions, a grilled jalapeño, corn tortillas, and salsa. It was delicious- the chicken was moist and well-seasoned, and the salsa was fantastic, the perfect dose of heat. For $10 I had dinner, and lunch the next day. Husband got the steak burrito and it was also really tasty. Also, get one of the popsicles The restaurant was charming, and the owner really friendly. Everything was tasty and an excellent value. We'll definitely be back, if not this trip, the next. read more

Tucked away in the corner of this dying shopping center, next to the Dollar Tree, is some of the MOST DELICIOUS charbroiled carne y pollo in the East Valley. The sides are equally yummy: beans from the pot, macaroni salad, Mexican rice! Yes, yes, and yes!!! This restaurant could kind of be considered an authentic version of what El Pollo Loco is, and FAR better. Don't forget to ask for a side of pickled onions and a slice of grilled pineapple! We stopped at La Chuya for dinner, and ordered chips and guac $3, 2 glasses of water, 2 entrees of the "1/4 pollo", and flan for dessert total cost came to $21. Not bad for a date night! Staff were quite friendly, the place was pretty clean and they had soccer on the television...(not my fav, but considering where I'm at...I'll let it slide!) For $3, the chips and guac, was a perfect pre-meal appetizer! When our food was ready, a guy from the back came out (manager or owner) who was very polite, happy, and helped add to our experience. The food was very fresh, chicken was yummy and tender, and the salsa was fresh as well. For $21, you have to try this place! I have to add that the Flan was as good as I've ever had! This is a must try Mexican eatery in Mesa. It has a simple menu of mesquite grilled whole chickens and carne asada. You can order the meats in the form of tacos, burritos, and various combination plates for individuals or groups of 2-4 persons. First visit: Four of us split a Campechano plate with 1/2 pound of mesquite grilled carne asada and a 1/2 of a whole mesquite grilled chicken (one breast, one thigh, one wing and drumette, and one drumstick), rice, beans from the pot, small servings (but sufficient to garnish six tacos) of guacamole and two types of salsa, six tortillas (three flour and three corn) roasted chilies, radishes, pickled onions and two large and delicious grilled green onions. We enjoyed the chicken (well seasoned, flavorful, slightly smoky and tender), but the carne asada was the star of the show. I think it's the best carne asada I've had in the Phoenix area. It's tender, moist, slightly smoky, seasoned just right and fills your mouth with a well rounded savory flavor. The house made corn and flour tortillas were hot, fresh and made for some excellent tacos once filled with meat, guacamole and salsa. The Campechano plate and drinks for four cost us about $30. We could have eaten more, but all of us walked away happy and satisfied. I mean if isn't broke, don't fix it. If you can operate a business successfully with only two options of choice ( other than size and sides) freaking A...do it. This place Rocks. I ordered the Medio Pollo dish with my side being a very well prepared salad that was fresh and great. The stopper though is the way they cook their meat. It's done on a huge mesquite grill. The chicken had a very nice char to it, the outside was crispy with so much flavor, there was that ring on the meat that shows low and slow and the inside was super tender and juicy. Their salsa has a good flavor that pairs well and I love that it is not chunky. Customer service is huge to me and the guy that helped me was great! I will definitely be back. I love it when a family restaurant is so into what they do and they prove it with pride, quality, excellent tasting and looking food, customer service and all with a killer price tag. It's unassuming tucked in the back corner of a strip mall (not to be confused with a Mexican restaurant located adjacent) this place is FIRE. The roasted chicken is delicious. 1 star for cleanliness, and that's where the positive ends. We ordered the whole chicken meal with rice and beans, a cheese quesadilla, a chips and guacamole, and a horchata, for our family of 4. Chips and guac: Chips tasted like they were from a bag. About a 1/2 cup of guacamole, that severely lacked flavor. $3.50 Horchata: 12 ounces of watered down rice drink. $3.50 Quesadilla: Dry, overcooked and anemic on the cheese. The biggest abomination was the chicken meal. The chicken pieces were dry, hard, and chewy. The legs were literally two strips of meat. The breast meat was smaller than the thighs. The meat was so dry you had to drink after every bite so you didn't choke. The rice had no taste and was like it came from a box. Portion size was miniscule. The beans were pinto beans drowning in water. No taste and again a miniscule portion. 6 wet corn tortillas for a family of 4. We left hungry, unsatisfied, and $35 dollars poorer. Best "Pollo Asado" and "Carme Asada" I've had in Az since I moved here in 2012. As someone that works in the food industry and has been doing it for 10 years, I can honestly recommend Pollos La Chuya. Food is amazing and the the owners, who are back there working all the time, are very friendly and actually make feel like you matter. The restaurant is a bit hidden next to a Dollar store. Is super clean and like I mentioned before, the food is great! The "Plato Campechano" is my favorite! You get chicken and steak and a bunch of extras! I highly recommend to anybody in the area to come and try this food! I live 25 minutes away and I still make the drive because is worth it! But if you're one of the lucky ones that live in the 3 mile radius, you can even get free delivery! The best of luck to this new local business! They have my business now! read more

We walked in here because the reviews were so good, but my husband was a little hesitant because of the prices. He had the carne asada burrito, I had the 1/2 Pollo plate, my son had the Quesadilla, and we ordered the Guacamole and chips to share. Let me tell you, it was worth every penny. Fantastic burritos! I went on a Wednesday not knowing they have a burrito special and WOW! The pollo asado burrito was so good I ate it and then got an asada burrito to take home for the Missus. I imagine anything with the grilled chicken or beef will be delicious. I'm excited to go back next week and try the Nachos (my fav). Service was polite and quick. I have to say I was surprised, in a good way. The chicken was amazing! Seasoned perfectly, juicy and crisp skin. Tortillas were fresh and delicious, as was the salsas. We had carne asada tacos too. They were good. This is a perfect little neighborhood spot. Good service and clean. Small but effective menu. I never like restaurant habichuelas (stewed beans) but I actually thought theirs was very good, went perfect with the rice. The flavors of the food were very good but the meat was dry, especially the chicken. The salsa was a little too spicy for me. It's a cute little restaurant tucked away in the corner of a plaza next to the Dollar store so it's kinda hard to find. I live just across the street from the plaza but I literally never knew they were there until I did a yelp search for mexican food nearby. I go to the Dollar store right next to them a few times a year and never noticed them before. If they learn to cook their meat to be more moist and tender, I would eat there again. read more

The burrito didn't fall apart and it added a nice flavor. The grilled mesquite meat was fabulous and the rest of the ingredients were in the right proportions so that I felt like I was eating a culinary creation, not a thrown together slop of meat, rice and beans. I ordered "Whole Chicken" with Grubhub and it reminds me of a Certain (Loco) fast food chain but much higher quality and consistency. I really appreciate they use pineapples in the dish as it adds a unique flavor to the chicken. Picture it. Mesa, Arizona. It was a hot summer day. The beads of sweat collected themselves atop my supple bosom as I perused Yelp for new lunch selections. Having exhausted all my local options, I was forced to expand my search to neighboring communities. In my search for deliciousness most tasty, I happened across a new name I did not recognize. I know the word 'pollo' means chicken and I loooooves me some chicken. After browsing the menu, I decided to call this location and place an order for $40 worth of burritos and a mac salad. Why $40 worth of burritos? Because I'm worth it, dammit. The woman over the phone was extremely pleasant - even more so in person. I love that kind of service! I bought two carne asada burritos and three chicken burritos. The first thing I noticed about these monsters was their size. My gracious, they were HUGE! Now, I'm up for any challenge and I'm not often intimidated by a big burrito, but these bad boys certainly made me blush. And I ordered five of them!! Well, not to be made a mockery of, I walked out wearing my best poker face and went balls deep for a confidence I didn't know I had. This was happening and there was no turning back now. The drive back to my office was agony. The smells evoked a yearning in me that I could barely control. I fought every urge not to pull off the road and devour those darn things. It truly was my finest moment. I brought those logs back to my office where they enticed curious ganders and encouraged salivating glances. The smells that permeated the air were enough to drive these sharks into a feeding frenzy where I barely escaped with my life and one burrito. One. That may not seem like a lot. Just the one. But when it's done right, one is more than enough. The chicken was delicious and the beans were so good. The rice was perfect and that salsa was on point.
