My little Yelp button helped us find this gem for lunch today. A small storefront in a retail strip, this place can easily go unnoticed. It is tucked back in the very northwest corner of the north end of the strip. There is a tamale place next door, but is separate. There are a few sandwich boards on the sidewalk to let you know that you're in the right place. Well, that, and the crazy-good smell of al carbon. The interior is small, but cute. There is a nice reception/service counter, and a small menu above. There are very few items, which allows them to concentrate on being the best at what they have. And they are. There are a few smaller tables and a central family table. There was a television with the futbol games on, and Ranchera music on high. The bathroom was clean, but there were (2) patio chairs in there that felt like I had a ghost audience! The ladies at the counter and in the kitchen were friendly. The customer demographic was all over the place. This is a great sign, that everyone is comfortable here. We split the Plato Campechano, which was perfect for two (1/2 chicken, carne asada, guacamole, beans, salsa, radishes, grilled onions and chiles, and corn and flour tortillas). We also added grilled pineapple. Mr. P had a Coca Zero and I had the Jamaica. The Jamaica was not overly sweet, and was so refreshing. The chicken: Amazing. Now, I am not a fan of chicken with skin, bones, fat, veins, etc. But I ate this chicken to the bone! The marinade was tasty, with crispy skin and edges. I'm also not a fan of carne adada, but I ate a good share of this too. Cooked and flavored well, cut into strips. The homemade guacamole and pico made for a flavorful aside, as I took the homemade tortillas to make little delicious bites. I was a bigger fan of the flour tortillas, and would order more of those next time. The "beans from the pot" were nice. I would have liked a bit more flavor, but they were well cooked, and had lots of jalapenos and onions in the juice. The pineapple was perfectly grilled. I just LOVE, LOVE grilled pineapple. We were so full, that we didn't try the macaroni salad or the rice this time. They have also pared down dessert to only flan. Mr. P is not a flan guy, so we opted out of dessert. There is a paletas freezer, but we didn't feel it today. Another good thing about this place: availability. I got the plato campechano ($18) to go and a side of grilled pineapple ($.85) because who can resist a freshly grilled pineapple? It was ready in a few short minutes and I was on my way to a mighty feast! The plato campechano comes with 1/2 lb each of carne asada, chicken, flour+ corn tortillas, pico de gallo, salsa, guacamole, pickled red onions, 2 roasted jalapenos, 2 roasted onions, sliced radishes, 2 lime wedges and a pint of beans. Quite a lot of variety! The 1/2 lb of chicken consisted of one drumstick, 2 thighs and 1 chicken wing. The meat ranged from a little tough to tender and had a lovely mesquite flavor from the grill. The seasoning on it was delicious. The carne asada was a generous pile o'meat, which also ranged in texture from a little tough to tender and also was well seasoned. The sides were fresh and went well with the meat and I appreciated that the flour tortillas are hand made. The grilled pineapple was the perfect way to end our meal. If you like fresh tortillas and grilled meat with amazing flavor you need to stop by Pollos LaChuya. (Do not confuse it with Christina's Authentic Mexican Food next door.) This place is run by a nice husband and wife team, and they've created a great spot. The restaurant is small, but clean and decorated nicely. As weird as this sounds, I liked their chairs! They look like the typical hard black metal ones you see everywhere, but the seat and backrest are kind of a soft, rubberized material that is quite comfortable. My husband and I split the Plato Campechano so we could sample both the chicken and the beef. We both ate our fill but there were plenty of leftovers. I would say that three people would probably be fine sharing this. The chicken was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. (That skin! Yum!) The beef was also cooked just right and was my favorite of the two meats. They serve their beans "a la olla" style which I always prefer over refried. The tender beans are delicious. The platter includes pico, pickled onions, radish, salsa, grilled green onions, guacamole, grilled jalapeños and a mix of corn and flour tortillas. I had read in another Yelp review that their Pineapple Agua Fresca was fresh and good. The owner kindly let me sample it first, and it was indeed light and delicious. This a perfect little spot to grab some yummy food. The location it's in is quite hidden though, but it is right next door to the dollar tree and next to a Mexican restaurant. They have plenty of seating and even a big table to accommodate a bigger party. The cashier was very friendly and we went with what she recommended us to to get. We ordered a whole chicken which came with two sides, two grilled jalapeños, salsa, and tortillas. We also got ourselves a half pound of carne asada with corn tortillas only. Drinks are separate but you do have free refills. I spent about $29. We sat down and a few minutes later the cashier brought us our food. Everything looked and smelled so good so we quickly dug in! The chicken was very hot and crunchy! It unfortunately was a little too dry for my liking, so I found myself drenching it in salsa. The rice was delicious though, and the macaroni salad was great! The grilled jalapeños added a good touch to our food but they were not at all spicy. The carne asada was AMAZING. We loved it! It was seasoned perfectly! The meat was juicy and it tasted really good. Stopped in today for the first time. Shared the Plato Campechano with my wife for lunch. Plenty of food. The carne asada was delicious but the pollo asado was our favorite. The grilled jalapeños and cambray onions were awesome and it came with a good side of guacamole. Even though the sides were tasty, the meat can hold its own and is delicious straight off the bone without toppings. Wash it down with some Mexican Coke or some Jarritos. I really wanted to try this place! So I placed an order for Father's Day since it's hot and we didn't want to go out. Well the food looked good on Uber eats app and I placed the order and it was delivered and missing most of my food I called the restaurant to ask and I was told to just call the driver from Uber eats and got hung up on. We called the driver and she explained that she waited to make sure the orders were all there and she also said she had a second order and they could have been busy but to contact Uber easy for support. Great find! A hidden little restaurant in the corner of the shopping center. It took us a little while to find it because there is no big lit up sign at the moment with the name of the restaurant but to make it easier for everyone, it's right by the dollar store. We arrived pretty late, at around 8:20pm. 2 tables were occupied but ready to leave. We ordered at the cashier. The lady was very helpful and answered all my questions. She also let us know that because they cook everything to order, it'll take about 10 minute for the food to be ready. We ordered only one plate which is a mix of half a chicken and half pound of meat (beef). It is served with a side of guacamole, pico, beans (cooked without lard), tortillas (corn and flour) and a sauce that goes with the food. It also is served with quite a bit of toppings such as charred jalapeños, charred green onion, pickled onions, and radishes. We also ordered 1 Jamaica which is less sweeter than the other Jamaicas that I've tried. The food came out fresh and it smelled great. The flour tortillas were pretty large and the corn were the regular small size. I made a chicken wrap for myself and then a beef wrap with all the toppings. Everything tasted delicious. The chicken was juicy and the meat was tender. The service was excellent too. The owners are warm and friendly and very welcoming. They shared with us that they run specials on Tuesdays and Thursday's. They also cater and deliver within a 3 mile radius of the restaurant. Hard to find...but so glad we didn't give up! What this place lacks in signage they more than make up for with the food. The shop is sparse and clean and the owners are hard at work tending the grill and to the customers. We popped in for lunch and ordered the Plato Campechano so we didn't have to make the difficult decision of chicken vs steak and for $15 we got a huge plate that more than fed two of us with food to spare. What a gem, you must try this place in Mesa! I am very glad I found this, thank you Yelp! We visited for a birthday lunch on a Thursday. It wasn't busy but there were a couple tables occupied. The man at the counter was friendly and welcoming. It is a quick service set up, with a large carbon grill behind the counter. They offer chicken and steak carbon in different options, either plates with warm corn tortillas, pickled onions, limes, salsa and whole grilled peppers, or burritos and quesadillas. My girlfriend and I ordered a carne quesadilla and a 1/2 chicken plate to share. I asked if they offer any free dessert for birthdays, and after verifying via ID, he gave us a free slice of flan. The food came out quickly and it was nice and hot. The chicken was cooked perfectly with a crispy skin. The carne in the quesadilla was tender, and it came in a fresh flour tortilla with plenty of cheese. We also added 2 slices of grilled pineapple to the plate, which was very good and was a nice addition. We opted for rice and beans with the chicken plate. I read a review about a year ago recommending this little restaurant and finally got around to trying it about a month ago. Since then, we've had their food three times and it is amazing! (You have to get mesquite grilled meat, this isn't a quesadilla and burrito type place in my opinion.) All three times we ordered the same thing, the Campechano plate. You get 1/2 chicken, 1/2 lb. of Carne al carbon, flour and corn tortillas, rice, beans from the pot, salsas, roasted chilies, grill cambray onions, guacamole and radishes. You can tell the meat is slow roasted over a grill that clearly has mesquite wood. It imparts a smokey flavor, especially the carne al carbon! The beans definitely taste homemade. The grilled cambray onions and jalapeños is a nice touch. The guac was excellent! I've lived in three states and eaten at a LOT of Mexican restaurants. The carne al carbon and grilled chicken make this one of the top three casual/fast food Mexican restaurants I've ever been to! read more

For the past six months I have been focusing on trying as many Taco Tuesday places as possible, trying to avoid the national chain places (which I do anyway) and honing in on the little hole in the wall mom & pop places. Mexican food is a particular challenge due to a lot of factors, high on the list is that places like Taco Bell have so conditioned Americans into a stereotype of Mexican food that they have no idea what constitutes good and bad cooking. As a result I've found some fantastic little greasy spoon places that have only been rated 1 or 2 stars here at Yelp. Pollos LaChuya caught my attention for the opposite reason - in only about 15 months they have a whopping 130 reviews with a solid 5-star rating and only 13 not-so-glowing reviews (when you take into account that 14 of their reviews are hidden because they are questionable). That's quite an accomplishment for a place that's tucked into a dark corner of a quiet mall and is about as big as most living rooms with a staff of one counter person and one cook. My Taco Tuesday visit was at prime dinner time and the place was deserted with only a couple of customers visiting the whole time we were there. I'm not sure it all adds up for me. I was frustrated and almost changed my mind about even going because every link I looked at online seemed to have wildly different prices for their menu items and the general overview made them look incredibly overpriced. When I got there and looked at the menu board for myself I could that their choices are very limited, mostly a few variations on a chicken dinner priced according to how much meat you want. I opted for the half-chicken which offers a choice of two sides from predictable choices like beans, rice, macaroni salad, etc. The dinner plate also includes some warm tortillas and some garnishes. Since grilled chicken is why you would choose to come here let's start with that. Half a chicken is a lot of meat, so much that I had to take the rest home with me. It is mesquite grilled and tender. I would neither use the words juicy nor dry to describe it because so many fast food places inject so much water and chemicals into their chicken that most people forget what chicken is supposed to taste like. In reality it tends to be dry in the sense of how it would taste if you grilled it at home on your own barbecue. The skin is crispy and deeply infused with the flavor of the grilling process. If you have been conditioned to think that Mexican food is supposed to taste "hot" or "spicy" you might be disappointed, this chicken tastes like chicken. The whole pinto beans are served in a soupy gravy and were better quality than the slop you get in some Mexican restaurants but not especially flavorful. The rice reminded me of Minute Rice with some onions cut up into it. It had no resemblance to what most people think of as "Mexican rice". Like I said, Pollos LaChuya is very tiny but it's kept clean. The décor is stark with no "theme" look, just some paint on the walls and a couple of TV's. In other words, zero ambience. I am on the fence about what to say about the service since we only dealt with one person who I assume is the owner. He's friendly and talkative but when there's only one person you deal with there is really no "service" to be rated. I join with everyone else who objects to a credit card reader that starts with the question "would you like your meal to cost you 15%, 20% or 30% more today?" Of course it doesn't really say that but who sees the point of adding a tip at a mom & pop when the only employee is the owner? As far as my rating, there wasn't anything here to love nor was there anything really terribly bad. That usually results in an average score. 117 ""as good as it gets" ratings out of a total of 130 raises a red flag in my mind, no this place is a "not best of class" restaurant. I gave them a rating of 4-stars because in the final analysis I think I got a good meal for $10 (plus drinks) and was treated well, and I want to encourage others to try this place out. read more

This place follows the "In-N-Out Burger model," which is to keep the menu simple and do those things well. Consequently, some people may find the menu a bit limited. I suggest that you give it a shot. As other reviews indicate, it can be a bit difficult to locate as there is no overhead signage and it sits tucked into a corner, right next to another Mexican restaurant. My wife and I had the Plato Campechano, which really was a pile of food and enough for a few people. It was a good choice for our first time since it let us try both the beef and the chicken -- and she likes flour tortillas while I prefer corn for tacos. The meat is nicely marinated and grilled well. If you're not accustomed to pulling the chicken pieces from the bones, this may be a change for you. Note that it is completely worth the effort and allows you to get at all of the tasty meat and crispy skin. I liked the array of accompaniments that came on this plate. The guacamole was green and fresh and the pickled onions (cebolla curtida) added both a nice crunch and flavor to compliment the grilled meats. I also really enjoyed the simple "beans from the pot." The horchata was very good. I've had it "grainy" before at some places, but theirs is smooth and flavorful. The husband and wife who run the place were very friendly and I look forward to coming back. The prices are reasonable and the pictures of their burritos look amazing.
