My husband and I came here the other day for lunch. I had the Bandeja tipica with ground beef and he ordered the whole chicken with yellow rice and beans. My dish was seasoned well and had a great rice to beans ratio. Although it was good, I wished the chicharron was a bit bigger. My leftovers were delicious the next day. While the chicken was a great size, it was a tad too salty. He raved about the rice and beans. I would like to return for dinner to try one of the many seafood options on the menu. This is my second time retuning to this location of " Pollos Mario" o my because my mother "LIKED" it.... it was her birthday and we always take her somewhere she likes... Well well well few years later and things just have gotten worst. Let's start with....... Customer service : Employees are extremely rude and not friendly at all. They stare you down and give you bad looks as if you owe them a million dollars. My sister went to the bathroom and after she return to the table and sat down she realized her phone was missing and the employees were all acting sus because apparently one went into the restroom after her and never returned the phone... they tried to blame it on another customer !! Think if it was another customer they would have returned it!! WHATEVER! The phone was returned and that's when they started to act all weird. Food: mediocre food levels , tasteless and the pork in my bandeja Paisa tasted so much like pork and bland!!!!! This was and is the best Pollos Mario to me!! My family and frequent the one located on Woodhaven Blvd and while that is delicious this one really tops it for me. Not only is it larger in size, with a slight upper porch dining area, the food was just a tad better here. I kept to my usual Bandeja De Mario which never disappoints but here the taste of the meats from the char of the flat pans just did it for me. Okay Pollo Mario, I'm truly sorry but I'm not impressed. For a place that highlights chicken as a specialty, the chicken here is subpar. We arrived here in a Sunday evening and had to wait about 40 mins since the place was packed. Food: we ordered the skirt steak with avocado and sweet plantains and rice. The steak was tasteless: the rice was super salty. Like high blood pressure salty. We ordered a half order of salchipapas from the kids menu. I get that it's a half portion but come on, 4 little pieces of fried hot dogs is ridiculous for $7, not to mentioned that it was clearly fried earlier since it was very cold, it was basically just thrown on the plate when it's ordered. We also ordered the chicken and this was major disappointment, the chicken was dry, bland and unappetizing. Again the rice was super salty. The one thing that was flavorful was the soup they served. I was craving Latin food but I am allergic to many things so I included special instructions on my order that they basically ignored and then they wrote on my Receipt "this time only no changes". Located on Franklin Ave, before all the car dealerships, right by Hempstead Turnpike, I passed this place a zillion times, always wanting to try it. My husband, dad, his girlfriend and I came here for my birthday dinner around 7:00 on a Sunday night. There was additional parking in the back where a man (worker) waved me into a space. The restaurant is quite large, so we did not have to wait for a seat. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was that the food took a long time to come out. The waitress said our empanadas would take 20 minutes because they had a party upstairs. We ordered them anyway figuring they would come out with our food. Well our food took a very long time, maybe 45 mins? and the empanadas came out even later when we were finished with our food. It didn't matter though as that was the only real complaint for the night. The food was excellent, well worth the wait! I ordered skirt steak with onions and it was perfect. The rice and beans were excellent. I tried the thinly pounded breaded pork cutlets which were super tasty (Lomo) (reminded me of Chicken cutlets) and I tried my dads chicken which was perfect also! Not too much sauce and very tender. (reminded me of Chicken Francaise) My husbands dish was a little bit of everything and his steak (was also very tender), which has been very dry at other places was delicious. So I am just returning home from grabbing dinner earlier today. I ordered the fried red snapper and swapped the plantains for fried yuca. Mistake #1. The salad was ok but when the hot plate arrived I was sadly let down. I had to keep adding hot sauce or other seasoning. The fish had no flavor. The fried yuca was fried too hard. After a few mins it harden and just wasn't worth it. The best part of my plate was the rice. Oh and I sipped on a fresh lemonade. Refreshingly good. I picked up an order and when I opened the bag at home I was very disappointed. The fries were soggy, the planarian was tiny. I usually don't complain but this plantain was the size of my index finger in width and length. The chicken was dry and had no soft Maoist meat. The pork was salty. There were two salads and two small packets of dressing. I guess one for each salad. At least the rice and beans were good portions and tasty. The steak was tasty. Maybe eating in will be better. Yes, there were folks waiting for tables, but we waited for our turn to sit and eat just the same. My co workers and I came last night as recommended by one of my other co workers. To start off the great the night, the gentleman working the parking lot area was the most funny and entertaining as he pointed to where we can safely park the car in order to go into the restaurant. He was hilarious. Our waitress was the sweetest, most partient and courteous. I was running an hour late, and they still sat the rest of the group where they ordered drinks and appetizers until I arrived. She was extremely attentive throughout our entire dinner. My family and I love this place. We have been here countless times over the years-- for breakfast lunch and dinner. They know us here. The Colombian food here is authentic, the portions are huge, and the quality is always good. I would say that almost any order here is suitable for 2 people. There is plenty of seating here so there is rarely a wait. They do take reservations, but you don't always need one. They just got a machine that squeezes fresh oranges--so you can add delicious fresh OJ to the list!--I LOVE FRESH OJ!!!! I would have to say that the best thing I have ever ordered here was the Entraña Mexicana. Like I said, everything here is good--but this dish way passed my expectations. The meat was cooked to perfection. The dish had a GREAT kick of spiciness (coming from me, that means a lot because I am truly a spicy food lover!) So beware..it is ACTUALLY spicy...but my oh my..it is delicious :D As someone with much empanada experience, I can say that theirs are great--definitely give them a try. Go ahead and try their rotisserie chicken and fried yuca too ;) Parking here is a breeze with the free valet parking. Or, if you prefer to park the car yourself there is a huge lot in the back--help yourself. The surrounding area is decent as well...some people hear Hempstead and they shy away...DON'T!...it's fine around here. Everyone here speaks Spanish and English. I was asked what temp my steak should be and the poor waitress must have run back and forth 5 or 6 times to make sure that we had everything we needed. I eat a lot at the other location in Brentwood. I must say, I've tried many different locations of Colombian food from Li to jackson Heights and this Pollo Mario is better then most. I usually get the typical plate, and I like that for lunch I can get the mini typical plate for 11$, and it is a big plate! Their meat is usually better then the other location. This location became my go-to when I moved to the island over 10 years ago. I now live in miami, and miss this place so much.
